Il Comune di Castiglione della Pescaia si colloca tra le località più caratteristiche della costa maremmana
e rappresenta da sempre, la meta di quel turismo italiano e internazionale amante della natura, dello sport,
della cucina sana e del clima mite. Uno scenario unico nel suo genere che è riuscito a rispondere negli anni,
alle richieste di un turismo in evoluzione senza mai perdere di vista le proprie tradizioni e la cura del territorio.
Proprio nell’ottica di rimanere al passo con i tempi senza perdere l’identità, Castiglione oggi mette in campo
tutte le sue prerogative con l’intento di ricevere attenzione da parte dell’Europa cogliendo un’opportunità così
grande ed importante come quella del riconoscimento di Comune Europeo dello Sport.
Certi di voler abbracciare questa possibilità, che significherebbe molto in termini di visibilità e di comunicazione
ma che sarebbe anche un’occasione concreta di dare nuovi stimoli e nuovi traguardi a tutta la nostra
comunità, accogliamo con grande entusiasmo e determinazione questa candidatura.
Già in altre occasioni Castiglione è riuscita a conquistare importanti riconoscimenti nel campo ambientale
come le 5 Vele di Legambiente e la Bandiera Blu 2012 Santuario dei Cetacei Pelagos a testimonianza della
cura costante che abbiamo saputo dimostrare verso il nostro territorio e nei confronti del più grande impianto
sportivo all’aria aperta che abbiamo: il mare.
Questo elemento ci consente infatti di praticare durante tutto il corso dell’anno gli sport a vela, il nuoto, la
pesca sportiva, le escursioni subacquee mentre il nostro entroterra, fatto di pinete, boschi e strade di campagna,
è il luogo ideale per il trekking, la bicicletta, la mountain bike, la corsa, l’equitazione.
Tutela del patrimonio naturalistico, grande attenzione alle tradizioni, cultura dell’accoglienza e una nuova
visione di un turismo evoluto legato allo sport sono dunque le caratteristiche che definiscono il nostro Comune
e che la mia Amministrazione ha tutta l’intenzione di coltivare.
Attraverso questa importante candidatura, che auspichiamo si trasformi in assegnazione del titolo, Castiglione
della Pescaia potrà ambire a delineare un nuovo profilo sempre più internazionale grazie allo sport per favorire
i valori che sono alla base delle politiche dell’Unione Europea e del suo Libro Bianco dello Sport interpretate
nell’operato dell’ACES Europe. Valori come l’integrazione sociale, lotta al disagio in tutte le sue forme e la
costruzione di una comunità che, al di là delle differenze di lingua, nazionalità, religione, credo politico e stile
di vita, si riconosca nei valori di fraternità e buone politiche comuni.

who are lovers of nature,
sport and a healthy diet»
The Municipality of Castiglione is one of the most characteristic places on the coastline and has always been
favoured by Italian and international tourists who are lovers of nature, sport, a healthy diet and mild climate.
A unique resort that, over the years, has kept pace with the demands of an evolving tourist industry, without
ever losing sight of local tradition, nor shirking its responsibilities towards its territory. It is in this spirit that
Castiglione now wishes to draw the attention of Europe to its unique resources, seeking the all-important
recognition of the European Sports Community.
This is an important step, which would mean a lot in terms of visibility and communication, but it is also a real
opportunity to stimulate new impetus and to create fresh goals for our entire community. So we are applying
ourselves to this application process with great enthusiasm and determination.
Castiglione has received other major environmental awards, such as the Legambiente “5 Vele” (“Five Sails”)
award and the “Bandiera Blu” (“Blue Flag”) award in 2012, which bear witness to the constant care we taken
of our territory, as well as casting the spotlight on the largest open air sports facility we have: the sea.
The presence of the sea allows us to engage in sport throughout the year - sailing, swimming, fishing, and
scuba diving. Yet the pine forests and country roads of the interior also provide the ideal environment for other
sports - hiking, cycling, mountain biking, running and horse riding.
The principles that define our municipality’s policies are protection of our natural resources, active attention
to our traditions, our culture of hospitality and a fresh vision of a new aspect of tourism related to sport. My
administration has every intention of adhering to these principles.
This important application process, which we hope will bear fruit, is the means by which Castiglione della
Pescaia can, through sport, aspire to the development of a new and increasingly international profile. It will
allow us to promote the values ​that underlie the policies of the European Union and its White Paper of Sports,
as interpreted by the work of ACES-Europe. Values ​such as social integration, combating poverty in all its
forms and the construction of a community that, despite differences in language, nationality, religion, political
belief and lifestyle, identifies with the values ​of brotherhood and good common policy.

Le discipline sportive, singole o di gruppo, negli ultimi anni hanno acquisito nuovi ed importanti valori declinati
in ambito sociale: coesione, senso di appartenenza e opportunità aggregative utili a stimolare la civile
convivenza.
Questa Amministrazione, unitamente all’assessorato allo sport che rappresento, lavorano con l’obiettivo di
indurre un numero sempre maggiore di cittadini all’avvicinamento e alla pratica delle discipline sportive in
maniera attiva e consapevole con l’intento di promuovere gli sport di base, le attività per disabili, i principi
legati all’etica sportiva, l’attività motoria come strumento di integrazione, inclusione sociale e miglioramento
della salute dei nostri cittadini.
Tutto questo lo realizziamo sostenendo il sistema sportivo del nostro paese rappresentato dalle numerose
realtà associative presenti sul territorio, contribuendo alla promozione e alla realizzazione di eventi sportivi
a carattere locale e nazionale in sinergia con il CONI, le Federazioni, le Società e le Associazioni Sportive.
A questo aggiungiamo la considerazione del grande potenziale che lo sport rappresenta in termini di risorsa
economica e turistica per un paese come il nostro che concentra, soprattutto nel periodo estivo, una grande
quantità di presenze richiamate dalle offerte balneari della costa.
In questo scenario si collocano le competizioni sportive che, per loro natura, muovono un indotto di pubblico
capace di trasformarsi in potenziali visitatori alla scoperta di Castiglione della Pescaia e del suo sistema di
accoglienza.
Per tutte queste ragioni siamo convinti che il nostro paese possa ambire al titolo di Comune Europeo dello
sport 2014 e beneficiare così di una eco internazionale capace di creare nuove occasioni che si tradurrebbero
in un incremento della visibilità sulle diverse discipline praticate nonché un effetto positivo in termini di
afflusso di pubblico e di nuovi iscritti alle Associazioni sportive locali.
Per i cittadini, infine, vorrebbe dire renderli protagonisti di iniziative e programmi volti a diffondere stili di vita
sani promuovendo l’aggregazione e combattendo ogni tipo di discriminazione.

to bring citizens closer to sport
in an active and informed way.»
Both individual and team sports disciplines have, in recent years, embraced new and important values, such
as social cohesion, a sense of belonging and opportunities for group activity that can help to stimulate civil
society.
This Administration, together with the sport department that I represent, works hard to encourage an increasing
number of people to take up sport in an active and informed way. Our intention is to promote traditional
sports, activities for the disabled, the ethical principles of sport, physical activity as a means of integration,
social inclusion and an improvement in the health of our citizens.
All this we achieve by supporting our country’s sporting network, represented by the numerous local associations,
and contributing to the promotion and development of sports events on a local and national level, in collaboration
with the National Olympic Committee (CONI), sports federations, clubs and sporting associations.
In addition, we are aware of the great potential that sport represents in terms of economic and tourism resources
for our territory, where coastal bathing facilities attract a large number of people, especially during
the summer.
Sport competitions draw the attention of the public, the very same public that may then become visitors intent
on discovering Castiglione and taking advantage of its hospitality.
For all these reasons we believe that our town is worthy of the title of European Town of Sport 2014. This
international recognition could create new opportunities for enhancing the visibility of the different sporting
disciplines, while attracting more visitors and increasing membership of local sports associations.
The town’s citizens would become involved in initiatives and programmes aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle
and integration, combating all forms of discrimination.

Castiglione della Pescaia is a
fishing village perched on a
promontory of the Maremma
coastline, whose Aragonese
castle dominates the coastline
below. The medieval village,
located a few kilometres from
Grosseto is a famous destination
for tourists, drawn here by the
town’s beautiful beaches that fly
the “Blue Flag”, certifying their
quality, and form the perfect
vantage point from which to
admire the natural beauty of the
Tuscan Maremma region. The
fifteenth-century castle, which
stands guard over Castiglione,
offers a panorama of the coast,
punctuated by beach facilities,
restaurants and all other facilities
available to those who flock to
the sea, whether to play sport or
merely to surrender themselves to
the Tuscan sun.

1.0 THE TERRITORY
Castiglione della Pescaia is a town in
the province of Grosseto, with 7,460 inhabitants,
located in the heart of Tuscan
Maremma, about 22 kms from the provincial
capital, Grosseto. The quality of the
sea and the beaches together with the
care taken to preserve the natural environment,
make the town a unique tourist destination.
Castiglione della Pescaia is a “5
Sails” award winner, while both Legambiente
and the Touring Club rate the town
as a top resort in their annual ranking, for
the quality of the natural environment and
tourist facilities. For this reason, the territory
of Castiglione has come to be known
as “Little Switzerland” or “The Switzerland
of the Maremma”. Extensive land reclamation,
together with the primary importance
of the port, before the advent of the
railway, allowed the town to enjoy a phase
of revival and prosperity from the late
eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth
century, during which time it was dubbed
“Little Livorno”. Its neighbours to the north
are the towns of Scarlino and Gavorrano,
to the east and southeast is the city of
Grosseto, while to the west and south
Castiglione della Pescaia is washed by the
waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The beach
resorts are all located at, or just above sea
level. Going inland, the village of Buriano
is at 184 meters a.s.l., Vetulonia is at 335
meters a.s.l., whilst Tirli and its surroundings
rise even higher.
1.1 CLIMATE
The climate is Mediterranean along the
coastline, influenced in part by the large
Poggio Ballone hill that rises to the north
of the coast.
1.2 THE SEA

winner, the impact is extraordinary; the
long white strip of sand is divided into
the west beach and the east beach by the
mouth of the river Bruna, the location of
the Port-Channel and the dock. The East

Beach is very wide and can contain row
upon row of beach umbrellas. It extends
as far as Le Marze, an area bordering
Grosseto.
The West Beach is narrower and is dominated
by the castle of the medieval village
and runs northwards for several kilometres.
After a few hundred meters the beach
is interrupted by the Capezzolo promontory,
jutted with small rocks. Further on is
the beach of Riva del Sole, the “Swedish
Village”, built in the 60s. Continuing north
one reaches Roccamare, a residence consisting
of about two hundred villas surrounded
by pine forest and Mediterranean
scrub. Continuing north again, after a few
hundred meters of beach, the Rocchette
headland appears, whose tip and western
area is accessible only on foot over the
rocks or by boat. A few kilometres further
on are the promontory of Punta Ala and the
modern marina, host to a large number of
boats. Off the coast here there is a series
of small reefs, one of which is substantial
in size: Sparviero Island.
1.0 IL TERRITORIO
Castiglione della Pescaia è un comune
nella provincia di Grosseto con 7.460 abitanti,
situato nel cuore della Maremma
toscana distante dal capoluogo circa 22
km. Per la qualità del mare e delle spiagge,
la cura ambientale e le attrezzature
è considerata un’esclusiva meta turistica,
premiata con le 5 Vele e posizionata
come prima località balneare per qualità
ambientale e turistica nella classifica annuale
di Legambiente e Touring Club. Per
questo, il territorio di Castiglione della Pescaia,
viene denominato anche “la piccola
Svizzera” o “la Svizzera della Maremma”.
Grazie alle grandi opere di bonifica del
territorio e alla primaria importanza rivestita
dal porto prima dell’apertura della
Ferrovia Maremmana, il centro conobbe
una fase di rinascita e floridezza tra il
tardo Settecento e la metà dell’Ottocento,
tanto da essere chiamato in quel periodo
la piccola Livorno. Il territorio comunale
confina a nord con i comuni di Scarlino e
Gavorrano, a est e a sud-est con il comune
di Grosseto, mentre a ovest e a sud è bagnato
dalle acque del Mar Tirreno. Le località
balneari si estendono attorno al livello
del mare o a quote lievemente superiori,
mentre nell’entroterra si segnalano i 184
metri s.l.m. di Buriano, i 335 metri s.l.m.
di Vetulonia, mentre quote superiori si
registrano nella frazione di Tirli e nei suoi
dintorni.
1.1 IL CLIMA
Il clima è di tipo mediterraneo lungo il
tratto costiero, pur risentendo parzialmente
della vicinanza dei rilievi del massiccio
collinare di Poggio Ballone che si eleva a
nord della costa.
1.2 IL MARE
Per chi si avvicina a Castiglione della Pescaia
dal mare, che ha ottenuto i massimi
riconoscimenti internazionali, l’impatto è
straordinario: la lunga spiaggia chiara è
divisa dalla foce del fiume Bruna che termina
con il Porto-Canale e la Darsena, in
spiaggia di levante e spiaggia di ponente.

La Spiaggia di Levante è molto larga e
può permettere la posa di un buon numero
di ombrelloni. Si estende fino alla località
delle Marze dove inizia il Comune di Grosseto.
La Spiaggia di Ponente, più stretta, è
sovrastata dal Castello del Borgo Medievale
e prosegue per diversi chilometri in
direzione nord. Dopo poche centinaia di
metri si potrà incontrare il promontorio
di Capezzòlo con piccoli scogli affioranti.
A seguire, la spiaggia di Riva del Sole, il
“Villaggio Svedese” sorto negli anni ’60.
Proseguendo ancora verso nord, si incontra
Roccamare, un residence costituito
da circa duecento villette circondate da
pineta e macchia mediterranea. Proseguendo
ancora verso nord, dopo qualche
centinaio di metri di spiaggia, compare il
promontorio delle Rocchette la cui punta e
la parte di ponente sono raggiungibili solamente
a piedi sugli scogli o con la barca.

il promontorio di Punta Ala con il moderno
porto turistico che ospita un gran numero

The Village and the Library

1.3 HISTORY
Grosseto and Castiglione were once divided
by a large brackish water lake that the
Romans called Lake Prile, extending inland
from the beach for about 15 kms. In
the eighth century BC , the Etruscans settled
to the north and south of this expanse
of water on two hills that towered above
the lake - Vetulonia was established on
the northern hill, in the territory of Castiglione
della Pescaia and Roselle on the
southern hill, in the territory of Grosseto.
It was not until the ninth century AD that
Castiglione della Pescaia was mentioned
as a settlement. At that time the town was
actually owned by the monks of the Abbey
of Sant’Antimo, but in practice it lay
under the dominion of Pisa. This situation
lasted until at least the middle of the 15th
century, when the town was conquered by
Philip of Aragon. Ownership was then in
the hands of the Piccolomini family, who
held the town for about a century.
In 1558, following the sale of the territory
and island of Giglio to Eleonora of Toledo,
wife of Cosimo I de ‘Medici, the intense
exploitation of the lake Prile continued.
Fish farming and grazing land rites were
leased to Monte dei Paschi, who charged
“customs” on every beast brought into
Maremma to pasture.
Eleonora fell in love with the place and
built a palace, today called “Palazzo Centurioni”,
in the town, which was by then
protected by solid walls running down to
the river Bruna.
Over the course of the centuries the Prile
lake lost its salinity, becoming fetid
swampland in which the malaria-bearing
Anopheles mosquito thrived. At the time,
it was believed that this feverish disease
was due to the stench emanating from
the water, hence the name “Mal’Aria”
(Bad Air).
In 1700, both Grosseto and Castiglione
della Pescaia came under the control of
the Lorraines, who redoubled efforts to
clean up the area.
In the mid-1700s, Leonardo Ximenes,
a Jesuit engineer, was set the task of
studying a system to drain the marshes;
a building, called “La Casa Rossa” (the
Red House) was constructed over the effluent
of the lake, incorporating a system
of sluices that stirred the stagnant water,
in an effort to diminish the foul smell that
was then considered to be the cause of
malaria. At the end of the 1800s, the malarial
plasmodium was discovered and, in
1898, the link was made to mosquitoes.
The Casa Rossa no longer had any reason
to exist and lay abandoned until a few
decades ago, when it was restored. Today
the newly restored Casa Rossa houses a
multimedia museum.
The land reclamation scheme was carried
forward by Grand Duke Leopold II , until the
Grand Duchy was annexed to the Kingdom
of Italy. The scheme was completed in the
period after the end of the Second World
War and the 1960s saw the beginning of
a renaissance for the territory, which had
hitherto been considered unhealthy and in
which life expectancy barely exceeded 30
years.

1.3 LA STORIA
Tra Castiglione e Grosseto esisteva un
grande lago di acqua salmastra che i
Romani chiamarono Lago Prile e che si
estendeva dalla spiaggia verso l’interno
per circa 15 Km.
Nel VIII secolo a.C. gli etruschi si insediarono
a nord e a sud di questa distesa di
acqua su due colline che la sovrastavano.
Erano nate Vetulonia nel territorio di Castiglione
della Pescaia e Roselle nel territorio
di Grosseto.
è solo nel IX secolo d. C. però che si ha
la prima menzione di Castiglione come
agglomerato urbano, allora proprietà dei
frati dell’abbazia di sant’Antimo, ma in
pratica sotto il dominio di Pisa che durerà
almeno fino alla metà del 1400 quando
viene conquistato da Filippo D’Aragona.
Agli Aragona succedettero per circa un
secolo i Piccolomini.
Nel 1558, con la cessione del territorio e
dell’Isola del Giglio ad Eleonora di Toledo,
moglie di Cosimo I de’ Medici, continuò
l’intenso sfruttamento del lago Prile con
l’allevamento del pesce e dei pascoli che
erano stati dati in affitto al Monte dei
Paschi che faceva pagare la “dogana”
per ogni capo che veniva portato con la
“transumanza” a pascolare in Maremma.
Eleonora si innamorò del posto e, dentro il
borgo protetto da solide mura che scendevano
fino al fiume Bruna, fece costruire
un palazzo chiamato poi “Palazzo Centurioni”.
Nel passare dei secoli il lago Prile
aveva perso la salinità trasformandosi
in acquitrini paludosi e fetidi nei quali
si era insediata la zanzara anofele che
con la sua puntura portava la malaria.
Si credeva allora che questa malattia con
le sue sfebbrate fosse dovuta ai miasmi
fediti emanati dalle acque, la “mal’aria”
appunto.
Nel 1700 Castiglione e Grosseto passarono
sotto il controllo dei Lorena che intensificarono
la bonifica della zona.
A metà del 1700 fu dato incarico ad un
ingegnere Gesuita di studiare un sistema
per bonificare il padule, Leonardo Ximenes:
questi fece costruire un edificio, la
Casa Rossa, sull’emissario del lago che
con un sistema di cataratte muoveva le
acque stagnanti per diminuire gli effluvi
ritenuti allora, responsabili della malaria.
Alla fine del 1800 fu scoperto il plasmodio
della malaria e nel 1898 fu associata alla
zanzara anofele: la Casa Rossa non aveva
più motivo di esistere e fu abbandonata
fino a qualche decennio fa. Restaurata, è
oggi sede di un Museo multimediale.
La bonifica fu portata avanti dal Granduca
Leopoldo II fino all’annessione del
Granducato al Regno di Italia. Terminata
la bonifica, nel dopoguerra e negli anni
60, iniziò un periodo di rinascita per una
terra che era stata considerata insalubre
e la cui aspettativa di vita superava a
malapena i 30 anni. Proprio nel 1960 a
Castiglione fu inaugurato un Villaggio di
vacanze svedese, Riva del Sole, che fece

In 1960, the Swedish holiday village, Riva
del Sole, was inaugurated in Castiglione
della Pescaia, an act that confirmed the
town as a tourist destination.
1.4 THE TOWN
The centre of Castiglione owes its unique
character to the presence of the port,
which hosts a large number of pleasure
boats of all sizes, including a large fishing
fleet. It is from this port, on November
1st, 1973, that Ambrogio Fogar left in his
sailing boat “Surprise”, returning on December
7th, 1974 after circumnavigating
the globe from east to west, struggling
against the currents and winds. Moving
inland up the channel of the port, we come
to the arched Giorgini Bridge, designed by
engineer, Mr. Giorgini.
The bridge is equipped with large iron
sluice gates to control the flow of the river
Bruna and improve the system of irrigation
in the surrounding fields. The bridge
also connects the medieval village to the
mumore recently developed area of the
town known locally as “di là dai ponti”
(over the bridges).
Having crossed the Giorgini bridge and
following the left bank of the river Bruna
for a few hundred meters, we arrive at
the 18th century red building, the Casa
Rossa. designed by the engineer Ximenes,
by command of the Duke of Tuscany. Today
it acts as the entrance to the Prile Lake,
now marshland protected by the WWF as
a winter destination for migratory birds.
Casa Ximenes, as the Casa Rossa is also
known, today houses a multimedia museum,
including fixed video cameras for
bird watching.
1.5 THE MEDIEVAL TOWN
The old town, perched on the Poggio Petriccio
hill, is still largely surrounded by
medieval walls built by the Pisans and
the Aragonese. Here several historical
buildings are maintained, such as the
eighteenth-century Church of Santa Maria
del Giglio, built inside a bastion of the medieval
city wall, and the sixteenth century
Church of St. John the Baptist whose portal,
in the form of a lintel, bears medieval
bas-reliefs and a circular bell tower. Going
down towards the town, there is Palazzo
Centurioni, named after the last family
to live there. Its rooms used to host the
tribunal court and, until a few years ago,
the town’s nursery school. The palace was
built in 1560 by Cosimo I de ‘Medici for his
wife, Eleonora of Toledo, and we can still
see on its front wall the brackets for hanging
flags and torches that illuminated the
road during receptions and events. Moving
up through the medieval village, we come
to the castle of Castiglione della Pescaia,
located on the tip of the promontory, at the
highest point of the medieval town centre,
overlooking the town and a vast stretch
of coastline. The castle was built during
the tenth century by the Pisans, who then
controlled the area, to act as a simple
watchtower. The original building was
called the “Torre Pisano” (Tower of Pisa).
Over the next two centuries the other two
towers were built, while the outer walls

1.4 IL PAESE
Il centro di Castiglione della Pescaia è
caratterizzato dalla presenza del portocanale
che ospita un gran numero di imbarcazioni
da diporto di tutte le dimensioni,
compresa una discreta flottiglia di
pescherecci. Proprio da questo molo, il
primo novembre del 1973, partì Ambrogio
Fogar con la sua imbarcazione a vela
“Surprise” per poi farvi ritorno il 7 dicembre
1974 dopo aver circumnavigato
il globo da est ad ovest lottando contro le
correnti ed i venti contrari. Spostandosi
verso l’entroterra, si incontra il ponte ad
arcate costruito su progetto dell’ingegnere
Giorgini e munito di grandi cataratte di
ferro per rallentare il deflusso del fiume
Bruna e poter così migliorare l’irrigazione
dei campi o facilitare il deflusso delle
acque in caso di piena. Il suo compito è
anche quello di collegare il borgo medievale
con la parte più recente del paese
detta dai castiglionesi “di là dai ponti”.
Attraversato il ponte Giorgini e piegando
sulla riva sinistra del Bruna, dopo poche
centinaia di metri, si scorge una costruzione
di colore rosso del ‘700, la Casa
Rossa progettata dall’ingegner Ximenes
su comando del Granduca di Toscana.
Oggi rappresenta “l’ingresso” del lago
Prile diventato zona paludosa protetta dal
WWF perché meta invernale di uccelli migratori.
Casa Ximenes, detta anche Casa
Rossa, attualmente ospita un Museo multimediale
nel quale è possibile osservare
gli uccelli ripresi anche da telecamere in
postazioni fisse.
1.5 IL BORGO MEDIEVALE
Il centro storico, arroccato sulla collina
di Poggio Petriccio, ancora oggi è in gran
parte cinto da mura medievali edificate
dai pisani e dagli aragonesi. Qui sono
conservati in ottime condizioni diversi edifici
storici come la settecentesca Chiesa
di Santa Maria del Giglio, edificata all’interno
di un bastione della cinta muraria
medievale e la cinquecentesca Chiesa
di San Giovanni Battista che presenta
sul portale come architrave, un bassorilievo
altomedievale e un caratteristico
campanile su torre circolare. Scendendo,
direzione paese basso, c’è Palazzo Centurioni
che ha preso il nome dall’ultima
famiglia che lo ha abitato. Le sue stanze
hanno ospitato il tribunale e, fino a pochi
anni fa, l’Asilo Comunale. Costruito nel
1560 da Cosimo I de’ Medici per la moglie
Eleonora di Toledo, presenta ancora sulla
facciata attacchi per le bandiere e per le
torce che illuminavano la via in occasione
di ricevimenti ed eventi importanti. Salendo,
si incontra il Castello di Castiglione
della Pescaia che si trova sulla vetta del
promontorio, nella parte più alta del centro
storico medievale, che domina l’omonima
località e un vasto tratto della costa maremmana.

and the inner buildings were built during
the Renaissance. The entire complex
has undergone several renovations over
the centuries, the first by the Lorraines
in the late eighteenth century; the latest
renovation took place at the beginning of
the twentieth century, under the direction
of Lorenzo Porciatti. Today the Castle of
Castiglione della Pescaia consists of three
corner towers crowned with battlements,
the biggest of which is the original Tower
of Pisa. The main body of buildings faces
the sea to the west, while on the other side
of the complex there is an enclosed inner
courtyard. Another wall, equipped with
battlements, starts from the southwest
tower and encloses the south area of the
castle. An arched doorway near the tower
leads to a roof terrace.
1.6 THE VILLAGES
TIRLI
Tirli is located about 400 m a.s.l., nestled
among chestnut woods and Mediterranean
scrub. The church of St. Andrew the Apostle,
associated in the past with the former
Convent of St. Augustine, is located in the
village itself while the hermitage of Malavalle,
linked to the figure of St. William,
can be found in the woods that separate
the city from Castiglione della Pescaia.
The origins of Tirli go back to the early
Middle Ages, and the village was first recorded
in a document dated 814. At that
time Tirli consisted of a number of scattered
settlements, which had not yet been
consolidated into a centre of habitation.
Tirli is again mentioned in documents dating
back to the twelfth century, but Tirli
became an established village only in the
second half of the sixteenth century, after
the area had already been incorporated
in the territory administered by the Grand
Duchy of Tuscany. At the same time, the
growth of monastic influence in the area
led to a number of monastic structures
being built in the Poggio Ballone hills
surrounding the flourishing village. The
hermitage of Malavalle and the nearer
hermitage of St. Anne, gave immense impetus
to the development of the village.
The village never had defensive walls,
although these were common in nearby
medieval villages. From the early years of
the seventeenth century, the Augustinians
were very active in the area, in particular
the figure of the venerable Father Giovanni
Nicolucci (Montecassiano, 1552 - Batignano,
1621) who took office in the nearby
hermitage of Malavalle at the end of the
sixteenth century and ordered the creation
of a community of Augustinian monks in
Tirli and the building of a parish church,
as well as the hermitage of St. Anne. The
seventeenth century saw the construction
of religious buildings that call still
be found in the village, the church of
St. Andrew the Apostle and the adjoining
convent of St. Augustine, in addition
to the lost chapel of the Madonna delle
Grazie. Finally, between the seventeenth
and eighteenth centuries, the Praetorian
Palace was built, the only public building
in Tirli. A local legend concerning St. William
tells of the presence of a dragon in

secoli successivi furono costruite le altre
due torri, mentre le cortine murarie e i corpi
di fabbrica tra esse compresi vennero
edificati in epoca rinascimentale. L’intero
complesso ha subito alcuni interventi
di ristrutturazione nei secoli successivi,
prima con i Lorena verso la fine del Settecento
e, infine, agli inizi del Novecento,
sotto la direzione dell’architetto Lorenzo
Porciatti. Attualmente, il Castello di Castiglione
della Pescaia è costituito da tre torri
angolari coronate da merlature sommitali,
la più massiccia delle quali è l’originaria
Torre Pisana. Il corpo di fabbrica è collocato
sul lato occidentale che guarda verso
il mare, mentre sugli altri lati l’area del
complesso è circondato da cortine murarie
che delimitano un cortile interno. Un’altra
cortina muraria, provvista di merli, ha inizio
dalla torre sudoccidentale e delimita
l’area attorno al lato meridionale del castello.
Nei pressi della torre, si apre una
porta ad arco che conduce ad una terrazza
panoramica.
1.6 LE FRAZIONI
TIRLI
È situato a circa 400 m s.l.m., circondato
da boschi di castagni e macchia mediterranea.
Vi si trova la chiesa di Sant’Andrea
Apostolo, in passato collegata all’ex Convento
di Sant’Agostino e, nei boschi che
separano la località da Castiglione della
Pescaia, l’eremo di Malavalle, legato alla
figura di San Guglielmo. Le origini di Tirli
sono riconducibili al periodo altomedievale,
venendo ricordato per la prima volta in
un documento datato 814. In quell’epoca
la località era costituita da insediamenti
sparsi, che ancora non costituivano
un vero e proprio agglomerato. Durante
i secoli successivi, la località viene nuovamente
ricordata in alcuni documenti
risalenti al XII secolo. La costituzione del
vero e proprio centro risale tuttavia alla
seconda metà del Cinquecento, dopo che
la zona risultava già inglobata nel territorio
amministrato dal Granducato di
Toscana. Proprio in quel periodo furono
costruite numerose strutture monastiche
nell’area collinare di Poggio Ballone
attorno all’abitato fiorente, le cui origini
erano riconducibili alla crescente vita monastica
nella zona. L’eremo di Malavalle e
il più vicino eremo di Sant’Anna diedero
così impulso allo sviluppo della frazione,
che non fu mai circondata da una cinta
muraria difensiva, contrariamente a quello
che accadeva nei vicini borghi di origini
medievali. A partire dai primi anni del Seicento
furono infatti molto attivi nella zona
gli Agostiniani, e in particolare la figura
del venerabile Padre Giovanni Nicolucci
(Montecassiano, 1552 - Batignano, 1621)
il quale, insediatosi alla fine del Cinquecento
nel vicino eremo di Malavalle, promosse
a Tirli la nascita di una comunità
di frati agostiniani e l’edificazione di una
chiesa parrocchiale, oltre che dello stesso
eremo di Sant’Anna. Durante il Seicento
furono dunque costruiti gli edifici religiosi
che tuttora ritroviamo nella frazione, la
chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo e l’attiguo
convento di Sant’Agostino, oltre alla perduta
cappella della Madonna delle Grazie.

who cured diseases caused by the
unhealthy local environment and was later
made a saint.
VETULONIA
Vetulonia (Vetluna in the Etruscan language)
is located 300 meters a.s.l. and
has a population of about 270 inhabitants.
It rises on a hill west of Buriano, on
the southern slope of Poggio Ballone. The
village is of Etruscan origin. Dionysius of
Halicarnassus wrote that Vetulonia in the
seventh century BC was allied with the
Latins against Rome. Silius Italico reported
that the insignia of Roman power were
taken from the Etruscan village (and archaeological
excavations tend to confirm
this view, at least as regards the Lictor’s
fasces), Pliny and Ptolemy also mention
the village. Situated in the village are the
famous cyclopean dell’Arce walls, most
likely built in the sixth and fifth centuries
BC , which give evidence of the existence
of a major urban centre. The discovery of
a large number of coins (mostly copper)
is evidence of the village’s autonomy and
economic hegemony. At the peak of its
power, Etruscan Vetulonia was an important
commercial centre, in which many
jewellers plied their trade. Later on, the
village lost most of its power and influence
and, with the rise of the Roman Empire,
it became an urban centre of secondary
importance. Very little is known of medieval
Vetulonia, due in part to the lack of
documents. With time, however, the town
changed its name –first to Colonnata and
then to Colonna di Buriano, at first owned
by the bishops of Lucca, then object of a
lengthy dispute between the Lambardi
family of Buriano and the Abbey of San
Bartolomeo di Sestinga, which became
owner in the 1000 AD . In 1323, the municipality
of Massa Marittima bought the
territory. Then, nine years later (1332), it
became the property of the city of Siena.
During the fourteenth century it became
part of the Republic of Siena and remained
as such until the middle of the sixteenth
century, when it was incorporated in the
Grand Duchy of Tuscany. After the identification
of the ancient city of Vetulonia,
along with numerous other sites in Tuscan
Maremma, it was not until the nineteenth
century that its precise location was confirmed,
following the excavations of Isidoro
Falchi, a physician and amateur archaeologist.
In 1887, the original name of the
village was restored by Royal Decree. Modern
Vetulonia’s population peaked during
the 1970s, with about 500 inhabitants.
BURIANO
Buriano is a village located in the foothills
southeast of Poggio Ballone. The
origins of Buriano can be traced back to
the early Middle Ages, being mentioned
for the first time in a document dating
from the first half of the eighth century.
At that time it was a population centre
made up of scattered settlements. The
centre itself was built from the ninth
century on, as a fiefdom of the Aldobrandeschi
family and, during this time,

fatto costituiva l’unico edificio pubblico di
Tirli. A San Guglielmo si riferisce una leggenda
locale che narra della presenza nei
boschi di un drago, ucciso da un guaritore
di nome Guglielmo, il quale curava le malattie
procurate dall’insalubrità della zona
e in seguito fu fatto santo.
VETULONIA
Vetulonia (Vetluna in lingua etrusca) è
situata a 300 metri sul livello del mare
e conta una popolazione di circa 270
abitanti. Si trova su una collina a ovest
di Buriano, sul versante meridionale di
Poggio Ballone. Il borgo è di origini etrusche.
Di queste danno notizia Dionigi di
Alicarnasso, secondo cui Vetulonia nel VII
secolo a.C. era alleata dei Latini contro
Roma, Silio Italico che dal borgo etrusco
fa discendere le insegne del potere romano
(e gli scavi archeologici tenderebbero
a confermare tale tesi, almeno per quel
che riguarda il fascio littorio), Plinio e Tolomeo.
Nel paese sono presenti le famose
mura dell’Arce dette ciclopiche, costruite
probabilmente nel VI -V secolo a.C., che
sono la prova dell’esistenza di un centro
urbano importante. Il ritrovamento di
molte monete (soprattutto in rame) comprovano
la sua autonomia e l’egemonia
economica. All’apice della sua potenza, la
Vetulonia etrusca fu un importante centro
commerciale, dove lavoravano molti orefici.
In seguito perse importanza e con la
nascita dell’Impero romano, divenne un
centro urbano di secondaria importanza.
Si sa molto poco della Vetulonia medievale,
anche per la scarsità dei documenti.
Con il tempo, però, il borgo cambiò nome
- assumendo prima quello di Colonnata e
poi quello di Colonna di Buriano, inizialmente
possesso dei vescovi di Lucca, poi
a lungo conteso tra i signori Lambardi di
Buriano e l’abbazia di San Bartolomeo di
Sestinga, quest’ultima divenuta la proprietaria
intorno all’anno 1000. Nel 1323
il comune di Massa Marittima acquistò
quest’area, che passò di proprietà nove
anni dopo (1332) al comune di Siena. Nel
corso del Trecento entrò a far parte della
Repubblica di Siena, sotto la quale rimase
fino a metà Cinquecento quando venne
inglobata nel Granducato di Toscana.
Dopo che con l’antica città di Vetulonia
erano stati identificati numerosi siti della
Maremma toscana, si riacquisì la certezza
circa la sua esatta ubicazione solo
nell’Ottocento grazie agli scavi di Isidoro
Falchi, un medico e archeologo dilettante.
Così nel 1887 con un Regio Decreto al
borgo fu riassegnato il nome originario.
Vetulonia nei tempi moderni raggiunse
l’apice della densità popolazione negli
anni settanta, con circa 500 abitanti.
BURIANO
Buriano è una frazione situata sulle prime
propaggini sud-orientali di Poggio Ballone.
Le origini di Buriano sono riconducibili
al periodo altomedievale, venendo citato
per la prima volta in un documento risalente
alla prima metà dell’VIII secolo.

the first defensive structures were built,
including the Aldobrandesca Rock and
the lost church of Sant’Andrea. In 973,
the Aldobrandeschi ceded Buriano to the
monks of the Abbey of San Salvatore at
Monte Amiata. Over the following centuries,
the central fortified structures were
strengthened, following the return of the
Aldobrandeschi shortly after 1000 AD .
The Aldobrandeschi subsequently sold
the centre to the Lambardi, a local family
to which they were linked. The “reign”
of the Lambardi lasted from the eleventh
century to the first half of the fourteenth
century, and during this time the family
even managed to exert considerable
influence on Castiglione della Pescaia
and Vetulonia.
In 1332 Buriano came under the hegemony
of Siena, but a few years later, it
was traded to Pisa. In 1398, Buriano was
conquered by the Appiani of Piombino,
who included it in their principality,
where it remained until 1815, when it
was finally annexed to the Grand Duchy
of Tuscany and its fortunes then followed
those of the Grand Duchy. Most of the
buildings in the historic centre of Buriano
date back to the Renaissance period,
with the exception of the castle and the
medieval church.
PUNTA ALA
Punta Ala (formerly known as Punta
Troia) is a popular seaside resort lying
on the northern slopes of the promontory
of the same name. Previously known as
Punta Troia, it was the Italian aviator,
Italo Balbo, who had bought several castles
and villas in the area as residences,
who changed the name to Punta Ala
(Wing Point), in line with his aviation
background. The modern tourist centre
developed over the course of the twentieth
century, particularly in the 1970s.
The resort is famous for its well-equipped
marina and the sailing regattas organised
by the “Punta Ala Yacht Club”, the
cradle of the famous racing yacht, Luna
Rossa. Punta Ala is an elite tourist destination
in all seasons, with its luxurious
residences, “second homes” and yachts
moored at the port. The area between
Punta Ala and the Isle of Sparviero is a
335.4-hectare protected area in the Tuscan
province of Grosseto, recognized as
a site of regional interest (SIR) and Site
of Community Importance (SCI n. 107 “
Punta Ala and the Isle of Sparviero “ cod.
Nature 2000 IT 51A0007). Despite the
“disturbance” of the boats in the summer,
the area has a largely undisturbed
micro-insular ecosystem, with its cliffs
and rocky shores and the abundance of
typical plant species - Juniperus phoenicea
(Phoenician Juniper or Arâr) and Euphorbia
dendroides (Tree Spurge).
1.7 MUSEUMS
Casa Rossa Ximenes
Multicultural Museum:
Housed in the Casa Rossa Ximenes building,
the impressive Multimedia Museum
is located at the entrance to the Marshes
of Castiglione della Pescaia (the Diaccia
stituita da insediamenti sparsi. Il centro
vero e proprio sorse a partire dal IX secolo
come feudo degli Aldobrandeschi, quando
furono costruite le prime strutture difensive
tra cui la rocca aldobrandesca e la
perduta chiesa di Sant’Andrea. Nel 973
gli Aldobrandeschi cedettero Buriano ai
monaci dell’abbazia di San Salvatore
al Monte Amiata. Nei secoli successivi
furono rafforzate le strutture fortificate
presenti nel centro, grazie anche al ritorno
degli Aldobrandeschi poco dopo l’anno
Mille, che successivamente cedettero il
centro alla famiglia locale dei Lambardi,
a cui erano legati. Il domino dei Lambardi
si protrasse pertanto tra l’XI secolo e la
prima metà del Trecento; la famiglia in alcuni
periodi riuscì ad avere forti influenze
anche su Castiglione della Pescaia e su
Vetulonia.
Nel 1332 Buriano passò sotto l’egemonia
di Siena ma, alcuni anni dopo, fu ceduto
ai Pisani; nel 1398 Buriano fu conquistato
dagli Appiani di Piombino che lo inglobarono
nel loro principato. Da allora, il paese
rimase ininterrottamente nel Principato
di Piombino fino al 1815, anno in cui fu
annesso definitivamente al Granducato
di Toscana e, da allora, ne seguì le sorti.
Gran parte degli edifici racchiusi nel nucleo
storico di Buriano risalgono al periodo
rinascimentale, fatta eccezione per la rocca
e per la pieve di epoca medievali.
PUNTA ALA
Punta Ala (già Punta Troia) è una famosa
località balneare adagiata sulle pendici
settentrionali dell’omonimo promontorio.
Denominata precedentemente Punta Troia,
fu l’aviatore italiano Italo Balbo, che
aveva acquistato alcune fortificazioni e
ville nella zona e che poi divennero sue
residenze, a mutare il nome in Punta Ala,
traendolo dal gergo aeronautico. Il moderno
centro turistico si è sviluppato nel
corso del XX secolo, in particolare negli
anni settanta. La località è rinomata per
l’attrezzatissimo porto turistico e per le
regate veliche che vengono organizzate
dal locale “Yacht Club Punta Ala”, culla

élite in ogni stagione, grazie alla presenza
di lussuosi residence, seconde case e
imbarcazioni ormeggiate presso il porto.
L’area tra Punta Ala e l’isolotto dello Sparviero
è un’area protetta della provincia di
Grosseto, in Toscana, di 335,4 ettari, riconosciuta
come sito di interesse regionale
(SIR) e sito di importanza comunitaria
(SIC n. 107 “Punta Ala e isolotto dello

Il sito di interesse regionale presenta un
ecosistema microinsulare scarsamente
disturbato, nonostante la forte presenza
d’imbarcazioni nel periodo estivo, caratterizzato
da Falesie e coste rocciose con
tipiche formazioni vegetali a Juniperus
phoenicea o a Euphorbia dendroides.

Botrona Provincial Nature Reserve), one
of the most important wetland areas in
Europe. The multimedia facilities include
live video cameras, stationed throughout
the reserve, projecting images of animals
in their natural habitat onto large
screens.
Isidoro Falchi Civic Archaeological
Museum at Vetulonia:
Located in Vetluna Square, the museum
was renovated and opened in June 2000.
In the 1970s it was a multifunctional
building, with a library and a small
cinema on the ground floor and an elementary
school and medical clinic on
the first floor. A small Etruscan museum
was set up in 1978, but, in 1981, the
theft of its artefacts led to the closure
of the museum for 19 long years. The
new museum, dedicated to Isidoro Falchi,
who unearthed many of the relics
of ancient Etruscan Vetluna, displays
Etruscan artefacts found in tombs and
excavation sites in the town. The objects,
dating from the tenth to the first century
BC , demonstrate the prominent role that
Vetulonia played among contemporary
Etruscan cities.
1.8 POPULAR TRADITIONS
The Palio Marinaro has taken place in
Castiglione della Pescaia since 1952.
Five quarters of the town take part in a
race, the crews competing in the waters
outside the port channel to win the Palio,
designed by local artists. In recent
years the traditional Palio race, held in
August, has been accompanied by rowing
competitions for young people under
18 and women. In Vetulonia, on the first
Sunday of September, the local Palio is
run along the central Via Garibaldi, with
teams from four quarters competing:
the white-red Borgo, the white-black
Colonna, the yellow-green St. William,
the red-black La Torre.
Activity starts in the morning at 11.00
am, when the Flag-bearers and the Captains,
accompanied by the Dames, parade
through the streets, preceded by drummers
drummers, towards the Church of Saints
Simon and Jude, where the Palio is blessed.
At 16.00, the drums escort the jockeys
and their donkeys to the square, arriving in
the order of the previous year’s race: This
is a particularly spectacular moment, because
the “extras” and the donkeys parade
in gorgeous costumes made by the citizens
of Vetulonia. At 18.00 the draw takes place
to attribute a donkeys to each competing
quarter. Immediately after, the race starts
in via Garibaldi, with three knockout heats
followed by the finals.
The last weekend of September, again in
Vetulonia, is the date for the palla eh!
tournament, an ancient ball game also
known as palla 21 and still played today
in a number of towns in Tuscan Maremma.
The game is heir to a tradition handed
down through the generations, going back,
it seems, to games that the ancient Romans
borrowed from the Greeks. The early
versions were played with bare hands, but
di Castiglione della Pescaia (Riserva Naturale
Provinciale Diaccia Botrona), una
delle più significative aree umide europee.
Al suo interno, un percorso multimediale
consente, fra l’altro, di osservare in diretta
gli animali presenti nell’area, grazie a
telecamere azionabili da postazioni tecnologiche
che riproducono le immagini su
grandi schermi.
Museo Civico Archeologico
Isidoro Falchi a Vetulonia:
Si trova nella piazza Vetluna e fu ristrutturato
e inaugurato nel giugno 2000. Negli
anni ‘70 del Novecento era un edificio
polivalente, nel quale al piano terra si
trovavano la biblioteca e un piccolo cinema,
mentre al primo piano una scuola
elementare ed un ambulatorio medico ne
occupavano gli spazi. Fin dal 1978 era
stato allestito un piccolo museo etrusco,
ma nel 1981 un furto di reperti ne determinò
la sua chiusura per 19 lunghi anni.
Il nuovo museo, dedicato a Isidoro Falchi,
scopritore di molti resti dell’antica Vetluna
etrusca, espone i reperti etruschi trovati
nelle tombe e negli scavi effettuati nella
città. Gli oggetti, datati tra il X ed il I secolo
a.C., dimostrano il ruolo di primo piano
che Vetulonia occupava all’interno delle
città etrusche contemporanee.
1.8 TRADIZIONI POPOLARI
A Castiglione della Pescaia fin dal 1952 si
corre il Palio Marinaro. A gareggiare sono
cinque i rioni del paese che, con i loro rispettivi
equipaggi, si sfidano nelle acque
antistanti il porto canale per aggiudicarsi
il Palio disegnato da artisti locali. Oltre
al tradizionale Palio dell’Assunta che si
tiene ad Agosto, negli ultimi anni si sono
disputate anche le gare remiere dedicate
ai giovani under 18 e alle donne.
Il primo Palio marinaro fu corso nel 1952
quando a contendersi il tradizionale drappo
erano quattro rioni. Infatti il rione Ponte
Giorgini non esisteva non essendo ancora
costruito il ponte! Oltre la gara remiera vi
erano altri festeggiamenti, come la “cuccagna
al mare” o i carri di cartapesta che
sfilavano durante la tradizionale processione
a terra. Ma Il fulcro di tutto era ed è
tutt’ora la processione in mare alla quale
partecipavano tutte le barche e i pescherecci
“vestiti a festa” per la benedizione
del mare in onore dei caduti. Fino a pochi
anni fa teatro della gara era il fiume bruna
dove i cinque rioni dopo una fase eliminatoria
si contendevano il drappo. Adesso si
corre in mare per circa 2000 metri con lo
sprint finale nel porto canale per attraversare
per primi il Granpavese.
A Vetulonia, nella prima domenica di
settembre, si corre il Palio delle contrade.
Lungo la centrale via Garibaldi sono
le 4 contrade che si sfidano: il Borgo
bianco-rosso, la Colonna bianco-nero,
il S. Guglielmo giallo-verde, a La Torre
rosso-nero. Le attività iniziano già nella
mattina: alle ore 11.00 i Portabandiera
e i Capitani, accompagnati dalle Dame,
sfilano per le vie del paese preceduti dai
tamburini per raggiungere la Chiesa dei
Santi Simone e Giuda dove avrà luogo la
Museo e Gare remiere

a racket began to be used in the sixteenth
century to protect the hands, particularly
amongst the aristocracy. It was probably
for this reason that the racket version of
the game was for centuries played in the
city, while the bare-hand version continued
in rural areas. The sport requires no
dedicated “playing field”, but is traditionally
played along the streets and in the
village squares. The ball itself has a lead
core, covered with thin rubber strips, then
wrapped in wire wool and covered with
strips of leather.
1.9 CYCLING PATHS
There are three cycling paths centred
around Castiglione della Pescaia. The
most recent, opened in 2011, connects
the town centre with the nearby town hall.
Another path runs from the town centre
to the Rocchette road junction. The third
path leads from the town centre to Marina
di Grosseto, where it connects with two
other paths that carry on to Grosseto.

HOW TO REACH CASTIGLIONE DELLA
PESCAIA
There are no motorways giving access to
Castiglione della Pescaia, but the town
lies on the route of the four-lane state
highway that runs from the south (Rome)
to the north (Livorno).
The nearest airports are “Leonardo da Vinci”
Airport in Fiumicino (Rome) 190 kms
to the south, “Galileo Galilei” Airport in
Pisa, 136 kms to the north and “Amerigo
Vespucci” Airport in Florence, a distance
of 160 kms.
To reach Castiglione della Pescaia by train
you can use the stations of Grosseto and
Follonica, both 20 kms distance from Castiglione
della Pescaia.
benedizione del Palio. Alle ore 16.00, i rullanti
fanno da scorta ai fantini che con i
ciuchi raggiungono la piazza rispettando
l’ordine d’arrivo della precedente edizione:
questa fase è particolarmente spettacolare,
perché sfileranno comparse e asini
con splendidi costumi confezionati dai
cittadini di Vetulonia. Alle 18.00 viene effettuato
il sorteggio per attribuire gli asini
alle contrade. Subito dopo parte la gara in
via Garibaldi in tre batterie a fasi eliminatorie
fino ad arrivare ad un unico vincitore.
Nell’ultimo fine settimana di settembre,
sempre a Vetulonia, si gioca il torneo di
palla eh!, un gioco antico chiamato anche
palla 21 praticato ancora oggi in alcuni
paesi della Maremma toscana. Il gioco è
l’erede di un’antica tradizione tramandata
nelle generazioni che sembra risalire
storicamente ai giochi praticati dagli antichi
Romani, mutuati dai Greci. Le prime
versioni erano giocate a mani nude ma, a
partire dal Cinquecento si iniziò ad usare
una racchetta per proteggersi le mani, soprattutto
nell’aristocrazia. Probabilmente
fu per questo motivo che il gioco con la
racchetta rimase nei secoli prerogativa
delle città, mentre quello a mano nuda
si mantenne nelle zone rurali. Per questo
sport non esiste un “campo di gioco”
dedicato, in quanto viene praticato tradizionalmente
nelle strade o nelle piazze. La
palla è costituita da un nucleo di piombo
che viene ricoperto di sottili strisce di
gomma. Il tutto viene poi avvolto con del
filo di lana e ricoperto con delle strisce di
pelle.
1.9 PISTE CICLABILI
Ne esistono tre: la più recente, inaugurata
nel 2011, collega il centro abitato con il
Municipio, una collega il paese con il Bivio
delle Rocchette e l’altra, dal centro, porta
fino a Marina di Grosseto dove si raccorda
con altre due piste ciclabili per arrivare
fino a Grosseto.
COLLEGAMENTI
Per raggiungere Castiglione della Pescaia
vi sono le normali arterie stradali che non
vedono ad oggi la presenza di autostrade
ma di statali a quattro corsie che collegano
sia il sud (Roma) che il nord (Livorno).
Gli aeroporti vicini sono quello di Fiumicino
“Leonardo da Vinci” che dista 190 km,
quello di Pisa, “Galileo Galilei” a 136 km
e quello di Firenze, “Amerigo Vespucci” a
160 km.
Per raggiungere Castiglione della Pescaia
con il treno è possibile utilizzare le stazioni
di Grosseto e Follonica equidistanti dal
paese (20 km).

2.2 ALEX ZANARDI
“My name is Alessandro Zanardi and
I was once a racing driver. To tell the
truth, I was also rather good and even
raced in Formula 1. But my best glory
days were in America, where I took part
in the Indycar championship, winning
two world championships. One day I had
an accident, because of which I lost my
legs, but not the desire to continue to
live as a sportsman. It was hard to get
things back in order, but I managed.
After returning to racing and winning in
a car adapted to my needs, I was presented
with an opportunity that led to a
transformation and eventually saw me
launching myself into a new adventure
- Paralympic cycling. With my Handbike,
a special bike powered by the arms, I
have pursued a dream that led me to
the Paralympic Games in London, where
I won two gold medals in individual
line and time trials and a silver in the
team relay event. In all these adventures
I’ve had the good fortune to live, I have
never forgotten the places in which they
originated and which, indeed, were my
main points of reference. I was born in
Bologna, in the region of Emilia, a land
of good-natured and sincere people, but
as a child I was always on holiday in
Maremma and it is between the hills and
the gorgeous scenery surrounding Castiglione
della Pescaia where I had the
good fortune to be able to buy a beautiful
home. Here I was able to fully charge up
the batteries in preparation for such an
important sporting event. The roads, uncluttered
by traffic, are technically perfect
for training, the unique climate is
particularly benevolent, and the beauty
of the roads imparts motivation to sportloving
guests. It was here, on the roads
of Tuscany and especially on those of
Castiglione della Pescaia, that I built my
Olympic dream and I am grateful to this
land that I love. The beautiful sea, the
hills that surround it, the perfume of the
pine forest and unspoilt interior whose
beauty never ceases to be amaze. Nature
here is an “open-air sports facility” that
man has fortunately preserved. But not
only this. Wholesome food and clean air
make this town the ideal place for those
who love sport, particularly out of season,
thanks to the mild winter climate. In
a country like Italy, where sports culture
must, in my opinion, continue to be improved,
I sincerely hope that Castiglione
della Pescaia will be able to gain the important
recognition as a European Town
of Sports. This would be the means for
further strengthening the town’s ability
to offer young people the opportunity to
practice a variety of sports, but would
also attract the kind of tourists who are
looking for the ideal place for physical
activity. Good luck Castiglione della Pescaia!”
He was made an honorary citizen of Castiglione
della Pescaia in November 2012.
2.2 ALEX ZANARDI
“Mi chiamo Alessandro Zanardi e un
tempo facevo il pilota. Ero anche bravino
per la verità, tanto che ho pure corso in
Formula 1, anche se le mie giornate di
gloria più belle le ho vissute in America,
nel campionato Indycar, dove ho vinto due
campionati del Mondo. Un giorno ho avuto
un incidente a causa del quale ho perso
le gambe ma non certo la voglia di sentirmi
uno sportivo. è stata dura rimettere
le cose a posto ma ci sono riuscito: dopo
essere tornato alle corse automobilistiche
e a vincere con una macchina adattata
alle mie esigenze, ho definitivamente
trasformato quanto m’era accaduto in
un’opportunità rilanciando con una nuova
avventura sportiva nel ciclismo paralimpico.
Con la mia Handbike, una speciale
bicicletta che si spinge a forza di braccia,
ho inseguito un sogno che mi ha portato
fino ai Giochi Paralimpici di Londra dove
ho vinto due Ori nelle discipline individuali
a cronometro e in linea e un argento
nella staffetta a squadre. In tutte queste
avventure che ho avuto la fortuna di vivere,
non ho mai scordato i luoghi dai
quali sono partito, anzi, sono stati i miei
fondamentali punti di riferimento. Sono
nato a Bologna, in Emilia, terra di persone
bonarie e sincere, ma da bambino
venivo sempre in vacanza in Maremma
ed è proprio tra le colline e gli splendidi
scenari che circondano Castiglione della
Pescaia, dove ho avuto la fortuna di poter
acquistare una bellissima casa, che sono
riuscito a “caricare” al meglio le batterie
in vista di un evento sportivo così importante.
Sarà per le strade poco trafficate e
perfette tecnicamente per gli allenamenti,
per il clima unico e particolarmente benevolo,
per la motivazione che la bellezza
dei percorsi trasmette a chi ama fare
sport, ma io, sulle strade della Maremma
Toscana e in particolar modo su quelle di
Castiglione della Pescaia, ho costruito il
mio sogno Olimpico e sono grato a questa
terra che amo. Il mare splendido, le colline
che vi si affacciano, il profumo inebriante
della pineta e la natura incontaminata
dell’entroterra che non cessa mai di stupirti
per la sua bellezza; è la natura qui ad
essere “l’impianto sportivo a cielo aperto”
che l’uomo ha fortunatamente conservato,
ma non solo. Cibo sano e aria pulita
fanno di questo paese il luogo ideale per
chi ama lo sport, anche e soprattutto fuori
stagione grazie ad un clima invernale
mite. In un Paese come l’Italia, dove la
cultura sportiva deve a mio avviso migliorare
ancora, spero davvero che Castiglione
della Pescaia riesca a guadagnarsi
l’importante riconoscimento di Paese Europeo
dello Sport. Sarebbe un’occasione
per potenziare ancora la propria capacità
di offrire una possibilità concreta ai giovani
avvicinandoli alle diverse discipline
sportive praticate, ma anche per attirare
una tipologia di turismo che è alla ricerca
del luogo ideale per fare attività fisica”.

“Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Marco
Santucci, skater in the Italian national
figure skating team, winner of eighteen
national, six European and five world
titles. But, first of all, I am a Castiglionese.
As a card member of the Castiglione
Hockey Club since 1993, I train
in the Casa Mora sports facility, an ideal
environment not only for learning the basics
of the sport, but also for the quest
to exceed one’s limits. The Championship
events I take part in see me training in
sports facilities all around the world, but
none can compare to those that Castiglione
della Pescaia has to offer. The whole
town is geared to any type of sporting
activity, from fitness regimes to competitive
disciplines, with all-round training
throughout the entire year. When I start
preparing for a championship, I not only
exercise in the skating rink; the pine forest,
the beach and sea at Castiglione
all form a natural gym that forms the
basis of my preparation, with a unique
microclimate able to guarantee outdoor
activity during the winter months. What
makes Castiglione della Pescaia unique,
however, is the climate, the atmosphere,
the air we breathe; it is, in fact, an ideal
habitat for the sportsman. The whole
town is a real oasis of tranquillity, the
ideal place to recuperate after a long
day of training, regenerating both the
body and mind, in order to take on the
following day with even greater vigour.
All this makes Castiglione an important
destination for athletes, for my colleagues
from all around the world who
organize retreats in this small town, to
attend both small seminars or training
sessions, as for example, the National
Hockey team, which begins its preparation
for the European and World championships
in Castiglione’s facilities. Small
in terms of size, but great in terms of
quality - Castiglione della Pescaia is a
little gem, intrinsically linked to every
medal I have won throughout my sporting
career.”

Date and place of birth: September 7,
1989 in Grosseto. I started playing roller
hockey at the tender age of four, in my
hometown, Castiglione della Pescaia, as
a member of the Castiglione Hockey Club,
following in the footsteps of my uncle, a
former player. But after the first experiences
on skates, I felt a growing passion for
artistic roller skating: within a few years I
had a series of unexpected successes at
youth level, which lead to my being picked
for the national team in 2002.

Ma prima di tutto sono un castiglionese.
Tesserato con l’Hockey Club Castiglione
dal 1993, mi alleno negli impianti sportivi
di Casa Mora, un ambiente ideale dove
poter apprendere le basi dello sport, ma
anche dove cercare di superare i propri
limiti. I miei campionati mi portano ad
affrontare allenamenti negli impianti
sportivi di tutto il mondo, ma niente é paragonabile
a quello che Castiglione della
Pescaia ha da offrire. Tutta la cittadina é
un ambiente ideale per cimentarsi in una
qualsiasi attivitá sportiva, dal benessere
e fitness alle discipline agonistiche, in
una preparazione a 360 gradi in tutti i
periodi dell’anno. Quando devo iniziare
la preparazione per un campionato non
mi fermo agli esercizi nella pista di pattinaggio:
la pineta, la spiaggia ed il mare
castiglionese sono la palestra naturale
alla base della mia preparazione, con un
microclima unico che garantisce l’attivitá
all’aria aperta anche nei mesi invernali.
Quello che rende unico Castiglione della
Pescaia é peró il clima, l’atmosfera, l’aria
che si respira é infatti quella dell’habitat
ideale dello sportivo. Tutto il paese é infatti
una vera e propria oasi di tranquillitá,
ideale per ritrovare le forze alla fine
di una intensa giornata di allenamento,
rigenerando spirito e corpo, per ripartire
il giorno dopo con ancora piú vigore. Per
queste sue caratteristiche si candida ad
essere una importante meta per atleti,
con i miei colleghi che da tutto il mondo
organizzano i loro ritiri in questa piccola
localitá, sia per piccoli allenamenti seminariali
oppure come la nazionale di hockey
pista, che inizia la sua preparazione
per campionati europei e mondiali dalle
strutture castiglionesi. Con i suoi piccoli
numeri ma la sua grande qualità, Castiglione
della Pescaia è una piccola perla,
alla quale è legata ogni medaglia della
mia carriera sportiva”.
CURRICULUM MARCO SANTUCCI
Nato a Grosseto il 7 settembre 1989.
Inizia a praticare l’hockey su pista a soli
quattro anni di età, nella sua città, ovvero
Castiglione della Pescaia, inserendosi
nella società Hockey Club Castiglione,
per emulare le gesta di suo zio, ex giocatore.
Ma dopo le prime pattinate inizia a
maturare la passione per il pattinaggio
artistico a rotelle: a distanza di pochi
anni inizierà una serie inaspettata di
successi giovanili che lo porteranno alla
convocazione in nazionale nel 2002.

“My name is Elizabeth Artuso and I have
been a practising athlete for twentythree
years.
My athletics career began in Grosseto, but
I made the leap fifteen years ago, when
I moved to Castiglione della Pescaia and
became a professional. I have achieved
my best results while living and training
in this town.
Here I found the perfect place to train
safely and at any time of the year, thanks
to the mild climate and the presence of
the sea.
The sports facilities I need for my training
are set in a beautiful landscape
composed of miles and miles of lush
pine forests, where I love to run and
where I feel totally at peace with myself.
As well as being professional athlete, I
have also, for a number of years, been
successfully teaching this fascinating

di qualità l’ho fatto quando mi sono
trasferita quindici anni fa a Castiglione
della Pescaia e sono diventata professionista.
è proprio vivendo ed allenandomi
in questo paese infatti che ho raggiunto
i miei risultati migliori: qui ho trovato il
posto ideale per allenarmi in tutta tranquillità
e in ogni momento dell’anno visto
il clima mite e la presenza del mare.
La attrezzature sportive di cui necessito
per allenarmi sono immerse in uno scenario
meraviglioso fatto di chilometri e
chilometri di pinete lussureggianti dove
amo correre e dove mi sento totalmente
in pace con me stessa.
Oltre a fare l’atleta professionista, da
qualche anno insegno a bambini e ragazzi

“My name is Francis Viljo Angelo Tanganelli.
I was born in Stockholm (Sweden) on
June 7, 1963. I started playing tennis on
the courts of Castiglione della Pescaia, in
the town’s Tennis Club. It was right here
that my passion for this sport was born,
a passion that has influenced my life and
that has led me to be who I am today, a
tireless player and teacher, who is still
on the circuit, participating in veterans’
tournaments, but who, whenever possible,
returns to those three courts behind
the pine forest and the beach. The mild
climate and low rainfall allows me to play,
train and coach young players in our area
all year round, outdoors and in a unique
setting between the mountains and the
sea.
I would very much like to see Castiglione
della Pescaia gaining the title of European
Town of Sports, as this would permit
people like me, who train here and love
this town, to assist in the creation of a
future that is tied to sport.
This would benefit our tourist industry and
enable us to create new champions.”

My career as a player saw me participate
in many second category tournaments
in Italy and winning a number of them
- Montecatini, Parma, Sassuolo, Carpi,
Manerbio, etc.. With the Le Cascine Tennis
Club I participated in five rounds of the
national B team tournament finals. I also
participated in a final round of the Italian
Serie A team tournament, playing for Rastignano
Tennis Club.
In 1987 I played in the qualifiers for the
Roland Garros tournament, reaching the
threshold of the scoreboard.
In 1988 I was ranked in Serie A. In 1987
I had my largest ATP ranking, reaching
number 290.
I have been a national teacher of tennis
since 1990, when I retired from athletic
activity.
As a veteran I have played for the Castiglione
della Pescaia club, achieving,
ìtogether with Stefanio Toti, important
results, such as Italian and European over
45 vice-champion.
At present, I am member of the Villa
D’Adda Club in Bergamo. With them I
won the title of Italian veterans over 45
team champion in 2010 (with Massimo
Zampieri). In 2011 (with Paul Cane and
Mario Carnevale), I also won the title of
European team champion in the over 45
category.
I have also represented Italy in various
veteran team competitions (Washington,
Barcelona, Mexico City) winning the Potter
Cup in 2010 and reaching the final in
2011.
In 2012, finally, I took part in the Italian
veterans championship reaching the semi-finals
in the singles event and winning
the title in the over 45s doubles event.
In 2013 I participated with the Italian National
team at the World over 50s Championships,
winning the team title.

7 giugno 1963. Ho cominciato a giocare
a tennis sui campi di Castiglione della
Pescaia, nel Circolo Tennis del paese. Proprio
qui è nata la mia passione per questo
sport, passione che ha condizionato tutta
la mia vita e che mi ha portato ad essere
quello che sono oggi, un instancabile
giocatore e maestro, che ancora va in giro
per partecipare a tornei per veterani, ma
che appena può torna su quei tre campi
alle spalle della pineta e della spiaggia.
Grazie ad un clima mite ed alla scarsa
piovosità è possibile giocare, allenarsi ed
allenare le giovani promesse del nostro
territorio durante tutto l’anno, all’aperto
e in una cornice unica tra le colline ed il
mare. Auguro a Castiglione della Pescaia
di arrivare all’ambito titolo di Paese
Europeo dello Sport per consentire, a chi
come me si allena e ama questo paese,
di assistere alla creazione di un futuro
legato allo sport in grado di supportare

La mia carriera di giocatore mi ha visto
partecipare a numerosi tornei di seconda
categoria in Italia, vincendone alcuni
come Pavia, Montecatini, Parma, Sassuolo,
Carpi, Manerbio, ecc. Con il Circolo
Tennis Le Cascine ho partecipato a
cinque gironi finali del torneo nazionale a
squadre di B Ho altresì partecipato, giocando
per il Circolo Tennis Rastignano,
ad un girone finale del torneo a squadre
italiano di serie A.
Nel 1987 ho giocato le qualificazioni per
il Roland Garros, arrivando alle soglie del
tabellone.
Nel 1988 sono stato classificato serie A.
Nel 1987 ho avuto la maggiore categoria
ATP raggiungendo il numero 290.
Sono maestro nazionale di tennis dal
1990, anno in cui ho smesso di effettuare
attività agonistica.
Come veterano ho giocato per il Circolo
di Catiglione della Pescaia, raggiungendo,
insieme a Stefanio Toti, importanti
risultati, quali vice campione italiano
ed europeo over 45. Attualmente sono
tesserato al Circolo Villa D’Adda di Bergamo,
con il quale ho vinto il titolo nel
campionato italiano veterani a squadre
over 45 sia nel 2010 (con Massimo Zampieri),
che nel 2011 (con Paolo Cané e
Mario Carnevale), anno in cui ho vinto
anche il titolo nel campionato europeo
a squadre nella categoria over 45. Ho
partecipato inoltre a diverse competizioni
“over” a squadre in rappresentanza
dell’Italia (Washington, Barcellona, Città
del Messico) vincendo la Potter Cup
nell’anno 2010 e raggiungendo la finale
nell’anno 2011.
Nell’anno 2012, ho partecipato ai campionati
assoluti italiani veterani raggiungendo
la semifinale nel singolare e
vincendo il titolo nel doppio over 45. Nel
2013 ho partecipato con la nazionale
italiana ai Campionati mondiali over 50
vincendo il titolo a squadre.

3.0 The sea: our open-air gymnasium
Most of the Castiglione’s sporting activity
is centred on our open-air gymnasium:
the sea.
This natural element “par excellence”,
which concentrates power, energy and
life, is our town’s key resource and our
best training field. It also acts as the
racecourse for all activities that involve
the sea, such as sailing, kite surfing and
wind surfing.
Then there are all the other disciplines
that have little to do with the wind, but
need waves and deep water to be enjoyed
fully: surfing, sup, rowing, diving, swimming
and fishing.
The Castiglione Sailing Club and the Punta
Ala Yacht Club allow access to the sea
and dockside support for sailing. Here you
can rent berths for the whole year, book
sailing instructors for children and adults
and have maintenance carried out by marine
experts. You can also attend or participate
in regattas throughout the year,
on both national and international level.
Colourful kites and sails filling the seascape
signifies the season for kite and
wind surfing: both can be practiced in
complete freedom during the winter, while
in summer there are many access points
to the sea (the most popular are located
on the east coast, at the extensive Le
Marze beach).
The favourable weather conditions attract
countless numbers of kite and windsurfers
to Castiglione; the dependable northwest
wind arrives punctually at around 1
pm every day alleviating the summer heat,
and falls again at approximately 8 pm,
creating a unique spot for lovers of the
sport, both amateurs and professionals
alike. Webcams have been placed at various
accessible points on our beaches to
monitor weather conditions in real-time.
Their images can be seen on the town’s
web-site (www.comune.castiglionedellapescaia.gr.it).
But when the Scirocco wind arrives from
the south, heralding the arrival of a sea
storm, the western beaches of Castiglione
are invaded by surfers searching for the
perfect wave. When the weather is calm,
especially in the morning, it’s time for
lovers of SUP (involving a long surfboard
and a paddle), canoeing, swimming and
diving.
Another fundamental element is the river
Bruna that courses inland from the sea
through the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve.
The river is wide and easy to navigate,
making it perfect for rowing.
Many sport fishing competitions are held
both in the port channel and on offshore
boats in deeper water further off the
coast.
So our sea is an inexhaustible resource,
both in summer and winter, and the town
council is careful to give it all the care and
protection it needs. Our policies in this respect
meet the very highest standards.
Castiglione has received many environmental
awards and has participated in
numerous environmental projects.
3.0 IL MARE: LA NOSTRA PALESTRA A
CIELO APERTO
La maggior parte delle attività sportive
che si possono praticare a Castiglione
della Pescaia, si concentrano nella nostra
palestra a cielo aperto: il mare.
Elemento naturale per eccellenza che concentra
forza, energia e vita, rappresenta
per il nostro paese una risorsa fondamentale
e il miglior campo di allenamento
nonchè la miglior sede di gara di tutte
quelle attività legate alla vela: derive e
barche d’altura, kite surf e wind surf.
Senza dimenticare tutte le altre discipline
che poco hanno a che fare con il vento ma
che necessitano delle onde e delle profondità
per raggiungere il proprio massimo:
surf, sup, canottaggio, diving, nuoto e
pesca sportiva.
Per la pratica degli sport a vela gli accessi
al mare consentiti e che offrono
assistenza si trovano sulla darsena del
porto grazie alla presenza del Club Velico
di Castiglione e dallo Yacth Club della frazione
di Punta Ala. Qui è possibile avere a
disposizione posti barca per tutto l’anno,
istruttori federali che tengono corsi sia
per bambini che per adulti e manutenzione
effettuata da esperti del settore
navale. Sempre in queste sedi è possibile
assistere o partecipare a regate durante
tutto il corso dell’anno di carattere nazionale
ed internazionale.
Quando il mare si riempie di aquiloni e
vele multicolore è il momento del kite e del
wind surf: entrambi possono essere praticati
in totale libertà nei mesi invernali,
mentre in estate, numerosi sono i punti
di accesso al mare (i più frequentati sono
quelli del litorale di levante nell’ampia
spiaggia delle Marze).
Favorevoli, per queste due discipline, sono
anche le condizioni climatiche in grado di
veicolare su Castiglione una innumerevole
quantità di praticanti grazie anche alla
presenza costante del vento di Maestrale
che, come un orologio, si presenta intorno
alle ore 13.00, attenuando la calura estiva,
per calare all’incirca verso le 20.00
creando così spot unici per gli appassionati,
per i praticanti e per i professionisti.
Per monitorare in tempo reale le condizioni
meteo in modo accessibile, sono state
posizionate in diversi punti delle nostre
spiagge delle webcam che si possono
consultare dal sito del Comune (www.comune.castiglionedellapescaia.gr.it).
Quando invece soffia il vento di scirocco e
arriva la mareggiata, Castiglione è invasa
dal popolo dei surfisti alla ricerca dell’onda
perfetta nelle spiagge di Ponente.
Nelle giornate di calma piatta, soprattutto
al mattino, è il momento di chi ama il
sup (disciplina che si pratica con tavola
da surf long board e una pagaia), canoa,
nuoto e diving.
Altro elemento fondamentale, che si propaga
dal mare fino all’entroterra oltre la
riserva naturale della Diaccia Botrona, è
il fiume Bruna che consente di praticare il
canottaggio grazie alla sua larghezza e la
sua percorribilità.
Sempre sul porto canale non è difficile
assistere a competizioni di pesca spor-

Castiglione was visited by the internationally
renowned Susanne Prip Madsen,
who testified, after due inspection
and control, to the compliance with the
standards of excellence set by the programme.)
Another project, called “La
Casa dei Pesci” (“The Home of Fish”)
aims to the preserve and enhance the
sea of Maremma, by discouraging illegal
trawling on the coast, thereby encouraging
repopulation.
We have also created nature trails and a
marine art garden, placing sculptures by
international artists in bathing areas on
the seashore. But that’s not all.
Castiglione is also a member of the
“Carta di Partnership del Santuario
Cetaci Pelagos” scheme, a targeted
project to safeguard marine and cetacean
mammals. Castiglione is also part
of the “Pescaturismo” project, financed
by the Tuscan region, to create a better
understanding of various aspects of the
marine ecosystem and fishing practices;
marine experts and biologists share their
knowledge of marine ecology and biology,
describing the species that are fished
and their habitat, indicating appropriate
fishing seasons.
3.1 Nature: Castiglione’s prime
sports facility
A mild climate in winter and low rainfall
make Castiglione della Pescaia the ideal
place for a wide range of outdoor sporting
activities.
The huge variety of landscape, composed
of roads extending through pine forests,
the shaded slopes leading to the villages
of Vetulonia, Punta Ala, Tirli and Buriano
and paths that wind through the woods,
offer unlimited choice for all who love
open-air sport.
Add to this the almost non-existent traffic
and the unique Maremma landscapes
and it is easy to understand why we describe
Nature as our prime sports facility.
Cycling is, without doubt, one of the most
popular activities in our area: the two
local clubs have about 200 members in
the winter, but the number grows when
you add the summer tourists and cycling
associations that are present in the province.
You can understand why Castiglione
is one of the most popular destinations for
lovers of this sport when you cycle around
the hills of Tirli, Vetulonia, Giuncarico,
Montepescali and Buriano. Off-road, the
horizons widen considerably: mountain
bikers share nature’s spaces with lovers
of trekking, Nordic walking and motorcross;
since 2013, they can take advantage
of new routes on roads marked by innovative
road signs and well maintained
to make them safe and easy to use.
Among these new tracks is the Via della
Dogana, connecting the village of Rocchette
with Punta Ala, soon to be reopened
following a town council project.
This will restore to use the ancient route
that led to the hermitage of San Guglielmo
di Malavalle, patron saint of Castiglione.

Sono molti infatti i riconoscimenti e i progetti
ambientali che Castiglione detiene:
le 5 Vele di Legambiente, la Bandiera
Blu 2012 (il 27 giugno 2012 il Comune
di Castiglione ha ricevuto la visita della
referente internazionale Susanne Prip
Madsen che attestava, dopo adeguati
sopralluoghi e controlli, la conformità
agli standards di eccellenza previsti dal
Programma), il progetto di salvaguardia
e valorizzazione del mare della Maremma
“La casa dei pesci” che si prefigge
di contrastare la pesca a strascico illegale
nell’area costiera al fine di favorire
il ripopolamento ittico e creare percorsi
naturalistici con un giardino marino
dell’arte grazie alle sculture di artisti internazionali
poste nei luoghi di balneazione
sul fondo del mare. Ma non è tutto.
Castiglione ha anche aderito alla Carta
di Partnership del Santuario dei Cetacei
Pelagos che si propone, con azioni mirate
e attività concrete, di salvaguardare
la presenza dei mammiferi marini e dei
cetacei, nonché il progetto finanziato
dalla Regione Toscana di Pescaturismo
finalizzato a sensibilizzare i partecipanti
sui vari aspetti dell’ecosistema marino
e sulle attività di pesca attraverso l’intervento
di esperti del settore e biologi
che potranno fornire nozioni di ecologia
e biologia marina descrivendo le specie
pescate, il loro habitat e la stagionalità
del pescato.
3.1 LA NATURA: IL PRIMO IMPIANTO
SPORTIVO DI CASTIGLIONE
Grazie al clima mite anche d’inverno e
grazie alle poche precipitazioni, Castiglione
della Pescaia risulta il luogo ideale
per svolgere una ampia gamma di attività
sportive da praticare all’aria aperta.
La grande varietà paesaggistica fatta
di strade immerse nella pineta, di salite
ombreggiate che portano alle frazioni di
Vetulonia, Punta Ala, Tirli e Buriano e di
sentieri che si inerpicano nei boschi, contribuiscono
a dare ampia scelta a tutti
coloro che amano le attività sportive en
plein air. Se a tutto questo si unisce il
traffico pressoché inesistente e i paesaggi
unici, caratteristici della Maremma, è
facile capire come la natura rappresenti
per noi, il primo impianto sportivo.
Una delle attività che raccoglie più consensi
sul nostro territorio è senza dubbio
il ciclismo: alle due società sportive
locali, che contano in inverno circa 200
iscritti, basterà sommare il numero sempre
crescente di turisti estivi e praticanti
delle associazioni della provincia, per
capire che Castiglione rappresenta a
tutti gli effetti, una delle mete più am-

recently formulated plans for the beautiful
Mediterranean brush land area of
Casa Mora, where the archery field will
be reopened and made available to both
residents and tourists.
Trekking, cycling and mountain biking are
certainly not the only activities available
in this vast landscape; one of the oldest
Maremma traditions is horse riding on native
mounts. Thanks to the work of the La
Bandita equestrian centre, one can trek
on horseback through the natural oasis of
Diaccia Botrona, along the banks of the
river Bruna as far as the Romanesque
Clodia Island and enjoy beach rides on
fine, compact sand.

sentieristiche, grazie ad un progetto che
l’Amministrazione Comunale ha in essere,
ci sarà la riapertura di via della Dogana,
strada che collega la località delle Rocchette
alla frazione di Punta Ala. Così facendo
verrà ripristinato l’antico percorso
che raggiungeva l’eremo di San Guglielmo
di Malavalle, patrono di Castiglione della
Pescaia. Sempre in tema di progetti legati
allo sport, ultimo nato è quello che verrà
realizzato nella splendida cornice della
macchia mediterranea di Casa Mora che
prevede la riapertura del campo attrezzato
per il tiro con l’arco che sarà messo a
disposizione di residenti e turisti.
In questo ampio panorama, il trekking, il
cicloturismo e la mountain bike non sono
di certo le sole attività praticabili: all’aria
aperta infatti è possibile dedicarsi ad una
delle più antiche tradizioni maremmane
che è l’equitazione con cavalli a monta
autoctona. Grazie all’operato del Centro
Ippico La Bandita è possibile attraversare
a cavallo l’oasi naturale della Diaccia
Botrona, gli argini del fiume Bruna fino
alla romanica Isola Clodia per arrivare
all’arenile di fine sabbia compatta in riva
al mare.

their events. Castiglione della Pescaia
is always keen to host sporting events;

in the curriculum of infant, primary and
secondary schools.
The scheme benefits from the services of
a pool of qualified educators, who give
counsel and support to school teachers.

sportiva utilizzando le strutture pubbliche
e quelle private. (Dato elaborato
dall’Amministrazione Comunale attraverso
un’indagine conoscitiva sottoposta
a tutte le nostre associazioni sportive).
La percentuale aumenta se si pensa che
molti dei nostri sportivi non sono tesserati
e utilizzano il mare, la nostra palestra
a cielo aperto, e la natura, il nostro
primo impianto sportivo in maniera continuativa
e non quantificabile. L’unico
dato certo ci proviene dall’osservazione
quotidiana del nostro paese: è usuale infatti,
girando per Castiglione a qualsiasi
ora del giorno, incontrare persone che
si allenano a nuotare, a correre lungo
il mare, a praticare nordic walking nelle
nostre pinete o a percorrere le nostre
colline con le moto da cross.

Il numero dei tesserati ad associazioni
sportive sono 3.855 e 600 sono il numero
degli studenti di scuola primaria e secondaria
di primo grado che frequentano
lezioni di educazione fisica e gruppi sportivi
scolastici. La percentuale calcolata in
base alla popolazione risulta quindi del
60%. (vedi tabella nella pagina seguente)
In che modo il comune sostiene il lavoro
volontario nello sport
Molte della nostre associazioni vivono
dell’operato dei volontari che risulta
essere una vera e propria risorsa per lo
svolgimento delle attività agonistiche ed
amatoriali. Per questo, l’Amministrazione
Comunale le sostiene attraverso contributi
finanziari, patrocini, erogazione di
servizi e attrezzature grazie al supporto
offerto dall’ufficio Comunale dello Sport.
In più, in occasione di eventi e manifestazioni
le associazioni si possono avvalere
del supporto logistico e di controllo
della Polizia Municipale. A testimonianza
del fatto che Castiglione della Pescaia è
sempre incline ad ospitare manifestazioni
di carattere sportivo, nel 2012 il
Comune ha concesso il patrocinio e dato
il proprio sostegno a 41 manifestazioni
sportive organizzate sia da associazioni
locali che da quelle provinciali.

Lessons are held during the school day
for one hour a week, involving all pupils,
without any type of discrimination.
What is the role of sport in the municipality

1 – ENJOY EXERCISE
If physical activity is fun and enjoyable it
is more likely that when a child becomes
an adult, he/she will continue to enjoy it:
for this reason, fun must be a priority in
any proposal offered by any organisation
in our territory.
Diversity and interdisciplinary factors
are essential to ensure that choices are
made in accordance with the desires
and attitudes of each young athlete. In
our town, among the accredited projects,
in addition to “Giocosport, Sport-Amico”,
we have the “Corsa Campestre Natalizia”
(“Christmas Cross-Country Run”),
organised by the Castiglione Athletics
Club, which aims to introduce both
young and old to the world of athletics.
It is an amateur race including up to
400 people, run for over 6 km through
the pine forest that borders the Diaccia
Botrona natural oasis.
Throughout the winter, the O. Orsini
Institute runs a project dedicated to
children called “Informa Food”, a series
of physical activities carried out in the
gymnasium located in the “Il Gatto e La
Volpe” municipal park. It is an open-air
gymnasium, built using natural materials,
featuring Tibetan bridges, fences,
earth mounds, tree trunks, able to
stimulate the imagination but, above,
all to provide young children with a fun
activity. Freedom of interpretation that
excludes no-one: each child makes use
of the different natural elements in his/
her own way.
During the summer season, at the end
of the school year, children compete in
the National Day of sport, organised by
local sports associations in collaboration
with CONI.
The activities include soccer, beach tennis,
beach volleyball on the beach and
surfing, wind surfing and sailing on the
sea, providing an opportunity to take
part in extra-curricula, outdoor physical
activity, in total respect of nature and
the landscape.
Environmental protection, fun, friendship
and sharing are the objectives of all
these events, which focus on the creation
of opportunities to meet actively in a
sporting environment, rather than on the
staging of spectacular events.

2 – COMMITMENT TO ACHIEVEMENT
The idea of competing with others in
order to evaluate individual growth is
inherent in any sport. This is not to assert
superiority through comparison, but
to gain an awareness of the real value of
the achieved result.
The next step is to encourage a continuous
quest to improve performance and

(esercizio fisico come divertimento)
Se l’attività fisica è piacevole e divertente
è probabile che un bambino da
adulto continui a praticarla: per questo,
il divertimento rappresenta una priorità
nell’offerta proposta da tutte le realtà
presenti sul nostro territorio. Varietà e
interdisciplinarietà risultano componenti
essenziali per far sì che la scelta sia individuata
in accordo con i desideri e le attitudini
di ogni giovane sportivo. Nel nostro
comune, tra i progetti accreditati, oltre
al sopracitato “Giocosport, Sportamico,
abbiamo la “Corsa campestre Natalizia”,
organizzata dall’Atletica Castiglionese
che ha lo scopo di avvicinare giovani e
meno giovani al mondo dell’atletica leggera.
Una corsa amatoriale che ha visto la
partecipazione di ben 400 persone e che
si snoda per oltre 6 km nella nostra pineta
costeggiando l’oasi naturalistica della
Diaccia Botrona. Durante tutto l’inverno,
l’Istituto Comprensivo O.Orsini abbraccia
il progetto dedicato ai bambini “InForma
Cibo”, all’interno del quale si praticano
una serie di attività motorie svolte presso
la palestra ambientale ubicata nel Parco
Comunale “Il gatto e la volpe”. Palestra
a cielo aperto, arredata con materiali
naturali dove trovano posto ponti tibetani,
siepi, montagnole di terra, tronchi di
alberi, stimola la fantasia ma soprattutto
il divertimento dei più giovani. Una libertà
interpretativa che consente di non escludere
nessuno: ciascun bambino troverà il
“suo modo” di utilizzare i diversi elementi
naturali presenti.
Durante la stagione estiva, al termine
dell’anno scolastico, i bambini si cimentano
nella Giornata Nazionale dello Sport,
organizzata dalle Associazioni sportive
locali in collaborazione con il C.O.N.I.
Le attività svolte sulla spiaggia, calcetto,
beach tennis, beach volley e in mare surf,
wind surf e vela, costituiscono l’occasione
per praticare attività fisica non curriculare
all’aria aperta nel totale rispetto della
natura e del territorio.
Tutela ambientale, divertimento, amicizia
e condivisione sono gli obiettivi di
tutte queste manifestazioni privilegiando
momenti di incontro attivo con la pratica
sportiva rispetto ad eventi spettacolari.

Misurarsi con gli altri al fine di valutare la
crescita individuale è insito in ogni sportivo.
Non un confronto per affermare la
propria superiorità ma la consapevolezza
del reale valore del risultato conseguito.

to recognise limits in order to overcome
them. These are the concepts that our
sports associations seek to instil in
young people who take up a sport, together
with the principle of acceptance
of defeat and, not least, respect of health
and anti-doping rules. These principles
are adhered to by school projects that
have the support of the local administration,
such as “I Giochi della Gioventù”
(“Youth Games”) in which about
190 middle school students participate
each year. Working in parallel with the
schools, there are 40 sports clubs in
the municipal area that offer children a
large choice of multiple disciplines that
can respond to individual attitudes. The
town council gives particular recognition
to athletes achieving results on a
national or international level, These are
awarded a prize and lauded by the Mayor
in a ceremony that takes place before a
council meeting.
The town of Castiglione has also played
host to athletes of international stature,
such as world figure roller-skating
champion, Marco Santucci, European
veteran tennis champion, Angelo Viljo
Tanganelli, Paralympics champion,
Alessandro Zanardi and the Italian 800
metre champion, Elizabeth Artus, all of
whose example helps to draw our young
people closer to sport.

3 – SENSE OF COMMUNITY
Aggregation and team spirit form the
basis of sport. Acceptance of limits and
respect for those of others, together with
the knowledge that mutual aid is crucial
for achieving any result, these are the
main motivations instilled by our clubs
and our instructors. In fact, the sense of
belonging to a team or a club is not felt
only by athletes, but also by more than
250 organisers who give most of their
free time to the organization of their
club.
It is the municipality’s aim to give universal
access to the world of sport, ensuring
that both the disabled and the
elderly can practice sport and have access
to facilities, as well as participate
in events. Integration and social inclusion
are the objectives of a number of
projects for the disabled devised by the
Castiglione della Pescaia Sailing Club,
by the Punta Ala Yacht Club, by the
Friends of the Sail Association, the La
Bandita Equestrian Centre and the Castiglione
Hockey Club.
The Sailing Club has developed a threeyear
project in partnership with the
provincial and municipal administrations,
with the ‘”Association of Parents
of Disabled Children” and with the “Ali
sul Mare” association. The project allows
sufferers, of all ages, of psychological or
physical disability to be able to handle
the keel autonomously.
The Punta Ala Yacht Club has organised
courses at their accessible base, recognised
as a “Sporthabile” centre by the
re le proprie prestazioni e per conoscere
i propri limiti al fine di superarli. Questi
sono i concetti che le nostre associazioni
sportive cercano di infondere ai giovani
che si avvicinano allo sport insieme al
principio di accettazione della sconfitta e
non ultimo al rispetto della salute e delle
regole antidoping. Questi incipit vengono
presi come riferimento dai progetti scolastici
con cui collabora l’Amministrazione
comunale come ad esempio i Giochi della
Gioventù ai quali partecipano ogni anno
circa 190 ragazzi delle scuole secondarie
di primo grado. In parallelo alla scuola
ci sono 40 associazioni sportive presenti
nel territorio comunale che con il proprio
lavoro offrono ai giovani larga scelta di
molteplici discipline sportive in grado di
andare incontro alle singole attitudini.
Un riconoscimento particolare viene attribuito
da parte del Consiglio Comunale
agli atleti che hanno ottenuto risultati di
risonanza nazionale ed internazionale ai
quali, prima di iniziare una Assemblea
consiliare, viene consegnato dal Sindaco
un premio con relativa motivazione. A
tutto ciò si aggiunge l’ospitalità che il comune
di Castiglione da e ha dato ad atleti
di fama internazionale come il pluricampione
del mondo di pattinaggio artistico
su rotelle Marco Santucci, il campione
europeo veterani del tennis Angelo Viljo
Tanganelli, il campione paralimpico Alessandro
Zanardi e la campionessa italiana
degli 800 metri Elisabetta Artuso che
contribuiscono, con il loro esempio, a far
avvicinare i nostri giovani allo sport.

(senso di appartenenza)
Aggregazione e spirito di squadra sono
alla base della pratica dello sport. Accettare
i propri limiti e soprattutto rispettare
quelli degli altri con la consapevolezza
che l’aiuto reciproco è fondamentale per
ottenere ogni risultato, sono le motivazioni
principali impartite dalle nostre società
sportive e dai nostri istruttori. Infatti il
senso di appartenenza ad una squadra
o ad una società sportiva non si avverte
solo da parte degli atleti ma anche dagli
oltre 250 dirigenti che impiegano la
maggior parte del loro tempo libero per
l’organizzazione della loro società. Far in
modo di coinvolgere ogni realtà nel mondo
sportivo, rimane una delle caratteristiche
principali che il nostro comune vuole
portare avanti, consentendo la pratica
e l’accesso agli impianti, così come alle
manifestazioni, sia ai diversamente abili
sia alle persone della terza età. Integrazione
e inclusione sociale sono gli obiettivi
di alcuni progetti rivolti ai diversamente
abili da parte del Club Velico Castiglione
della Pescaia, dallo Yacht Club Punta Ala,
dall’Associazione Amici della Vela, dal
Centro Ippico La Bandita e dall’Hockey
Club Castiglione.
Il Club Velico ha realizzato un progetto
triennale in collaborazione con l’Amministrazione
Provinciale e Comunale, con
l’“Associazione genitori bambini portatori
di handicap” e con l’Associazione

Another type of sea-based physical activity
is offered by the “Friends of Sailing”
association, who organise an event
called “ Handy Sail Day”, in which the
disabled form part of the crew of yachts.
Other examples of inclusion in courses
for beginners are the skating courses
offered by the Hockey Club and the pet
therapy lessons given by the La Bandita
Equestrian Centre.
In April 2013 Castiglione della Pescaia’s
local town council hosted the Italian
National Paralympic cycling team who
trained with our honorary citizen, Alex
Zanardi.

4 – PRACTICE FAIR PLAY
Respect for others, for one’s self and
for nature are the key themes of sports
and play activities in which young students
of Castiglione participate. Initiatives
undertaken by the municipality in
collaboration with Legambiente, such
as “Puliamo il Mondo” (“Clean Up The
World”) and “Puliamo La Pineta” (“Clean
Up the Pine Forest”) enjoy the support of
teachers who accompany the children
on the beach and in the pinewood forest,
where they play a special game of
identifying and collecting unnatural elements.
In the case of traditional events,
such as the Palio Marinaro, there is a
special “Loyalty and Friendship” prize
awarded to the leader of the team that
best demonstrates the spirit of fair play
during the preparation of the competition.
Another initiative - a pleasure to
record - is the event in 2009, following
the earthquake in Abruzzo.
It was organised by the Sailing Club,
the Castiglione Football Club and Tennis
Club in collaboration with the local
administration. The youth football
team of Paganica, one the towns most
affected by the earthquake, no longer
able to train on their sports field in the
temporary camp, was invited to spend
a week in our area. For the occasion,
matches were organised with our youth
teams and, during the entire stay of the
team, the athletes had free access to all
our facilities. The youth of Castiglione
greeted this charity sporting initiative
with enthusiasm and with a spirit of
cooperation and respect for the tragedy
experienced by their peers.

5 – IMPROVING HEALTH
Improving health largely depends on
good nutrition and physical exercise, so
the town of Castiglione has embraced
the “InForma Cibo” project that aims
to achieve a better quality of life. This
initiative starts with activities carried
out in the natural gymnasium and then
goes on to include education on nutrition
through the distribution of educa-

Lo Yacht Club Punta Ala ha organizzato dei
corsi nella propria base nautica accessibile
riconosciuta come centro Sporthabile

Altra tipologia di attività fisica vivendo il
mare lo offre l’Associazione “Amici della
vela” con la tradizionale giornata denominata
“Handy Sail” in cui i diversamente
abili faranno parte dell’equipaggio di
barche d’altura.
Altri esempi d’inclusione all’interno di
corsi di avviamento allo sport, sono quelli
realizzati dall’Hockey Club con i corsi di
pattinaggio e dal Centro Ippico La Bandita
con lezioni di pet therapy.
Nel periodo di Aprile 2013 il comune di
Castiglione della Pescaia ha ospitato la
nazionale italiana degli atleti paraolimpici
di ciclismo che si è allenata insieme
al nostro cittadino onorario Alex Zanardi.

(correttezza e rispetto)
Rispetto degli altri, di se stessi e della
natura sono i temi cardine delle attività
ludico-sportive a cui partecipano i giovani
studenti di Castiglione. Iniziative realizzate
dal Comune in collaborazione con
Legambiente come “Puliamo il mondo”
e “Puliamo la pineta” si avvalgono del
supporto di insegnanti che accompagnano
i ragazzi sulla spiaggia e nella pineta
comunale dove, attraverso una specifica
attività sportiva, vengono invitati ad individuare
elementi estranei alla natura e
spronati alla raccolta differenziata. Per
quanto riguarda invece l’ambito delle
tradizioni popolari, all’interno delle competizioni
del Palio Marinaro vi è un premio
specifico denominato “Lealtà e Amicizia”
rivolto al caporione che si distingue per la
correttezza dimostrata durante la preparazione
della competizione. Altra iniziativa
che abbiamo il piacere di ricordare
è quella organizzata nel 2009 a seguito
del terremoto dell’Abruzzo da parte del
Club Velico, della Castiglionese Calcio e
del Circolo Tennis in collaborazione con
l’Amministrazione comunale: la squadra
di calcio giovanile di Paganica, uno dei
paesi più colpiti dal sisma, non potendo
più allenarsi nel proprio campo sportivo
adibito a tendopoli, è stata invitata a trascorrere
una settimana nel nostro territorio.
Nell’occasione sono state organizzate
delle partite con le nostre squadre giovanili
e, durante tutta la permanenza della
squadra, gli atleti hanno potuto usufruire
gratuitamente di tutte le nostre strutture.
I giovani castiglionesi hanno accolto con
entusiasmo, collaborazione e rispetto del
dramma vissuto dai loro coetanei, questa
iniziativa benefica legata allo sport.

an award from the European Union in
2004, as part of the ‘”Year of Education
through Sport”. To date, about 284
pupils have participated in this activity.
As for moving around, you can use the
free service “Take a Bike” in five areas
of Castiglione. Should you wish to leave
your car in a car park, you can use the
“Stop and Go” service – park your car
and take a bike.
In actions aimed at sustainable mobility,
the town participates in a tender organised
by the Ministry for the Environment,
Land and Sea, for the allocation of 10
assisted bicycles with high efficiency
and zero emissions.

Both the municipal and private sporting
facilities can be used indifferently by
all, irrespective of age. The municipality
entrusts the management of the public
facilities to the various associations,
following public competitions held in accordance
with Regional Law n. 6, dated
03.01.2005, entitled “Regulations on the
Method of Award of Sports Facilities by
Public Administration in Tuscany.”
The appointed associations have the
task of keeping the facilities entrusted
to their care in perfect working order
and are checked regularly by a special
Technical Office and the Sport Office: the
associations receive a subsidy from the
municipality, totalling € 121,400.00, towards
the upkeep of the facilities.
The municipality has a separate agreement
with swimming pools located in
neighbouring municipalities (Grosseto,
Follonica and Bagno Gavorrano), totalling
€ 6,000 euro per year: this allows
access to our residents, of any age, at
special rates.
Facilities accessible to the disabled include
the Punta Ala nautical base, inaugurated
in September 2011, with a floating
dock, a boardwalk suitable for the
disabled, an access hoist, and a briefing
room with communication accessories
and appropriate bathrooms.
Class 2.4 boats are used here, together
with Access 303 boats with onboard instructors.
The base played host, during April and
May, to the Italian team preparing for the
Paralympics in London.
Two accessible piers for sport fishing
have also been built within the Diaccia
Botrona nature reserve, near the Casa
Rossa Ximenes multimedia museum.

di una migliore qualità della

adoperati dai giovani studenti privilegiando

InForma Cibo è stato premiato dall’Unione
Europea nel 2004 nell’ambito dell’”Anno
dell’Educazione attraverso lo Sport”. Ad
oggi hanno partecipato a questa attività
circa 284 alunni. Per quanto riguarda invece
lo spostamento attivo, in 5 zone di Castiglione
della Pescaia è possibile utilizzare il
servizio gratuito “Prendi una bici”. Se invece
si desidera lasciare anche la macchina,
all’interno di un parcheggio scambiatore, è
possibile usufruire del servizio “Stop and
go” cioè lasciare l’auto e prendere una bici.
Nelle azioni finalizzate ad una mobilità sostenibile
il Comune partecipa ad un bando
promosso da il Ministero dell’Ambiente e
della tutela del territorio e del mare, per
l’attribuzione di 10 biciclette assistite ad
alto rendimento e ad emissione zero.

da tutti senza distinzione di età; quelle
pubbliche, sono state affidate in gestione
attraverso un regolamento comunale,
alle diverse associazioni sulla base del
principio concorsuale in base alla L.R. n.
6 dello 03.01.2005 ”Disciplina delle modalità
di affidamento di impianti sportivi
da parte degli Enti Pubblici territoriali
della Toscana”. Queste hanno il compito di
mantenerle in perfetta efficienza valutata
periodicamente da un apposito ufficio tecnico
e dall’ufficio sport: per questo il Comune
sovvenziona le associazioni con un
importo complessivo annuo di 121.400,00
euro. Altro tipo di convenzione è stata stipulata
con le piscine dei Comuni limitrofi
(Grosseto, Follonica e Bagno di Gavorrano)
per un importo complessivo di 6.000 euro
annui: questa permette ai nostri residenti,
di qualsiasi età, di accedere alle strutture
con tariffe agevolate. Altro capitolo
riguarda invece le persone diversamente
abili: a Punta Ala è stata inaugurata a settembre
2011 una base nautica accessibile
formata da un pontile galleggiante, una
passerella omologata per la disabilità, sollevatore
a bandiera, una sala briefing con
accessori per la comunicazione e servizi
idonei. Qui sono utilizzate imbarcazioni per
l’attività agonistica della classe 2.4 e imbarcazioni
con la presenza di un istruttore
a bordo della classe Access 303. Questa
base ha ospitato nei mesi di aprile e maggio
il team italiano in preparazione per le
Paralimpiadi di Londra. Inoltre, sono stati

della Diaccia Botrona, nei pressi del Museo
Multimediale della Casa Rossa Ximenes,
due pontili accessibili per la pesca sportiva.
Per quanto riguarda la terza e la quarta
età, presso il Centro Sociale Castiglionese
vengono organizzati corsi di ginnastica
dolce e attività motoria e per facilitare la
fruibilità esiste un servizio di trasporto
domiciliare gratuito. Per la formazione e
addestramento di allenatori e istruttori,
le competenze passano direttamente alle
associazioni sportive. Queste organizzano
stage internazionali, come quello dell’associazione
hockey all’interno del “Progetto
sportivo culturale di interscambio tra Italia
e Brasile” presentato dal campione di
pattinaggio italiano Marco Santucci nel
febbraio 2013 e come quelli già effettuati
dal Club Velico di Castiglione per la formazione
di istruttori federali.

How does your local municipality cooperate
with associations and sports
institutions at national and European
level, for example, the National Olympic
Committee and international sports
associations
All the associations in our territory are
recognized by CONI, the National Olympic
Committee, and the council believes
this is necessary for the allocation of
patronage and financial contributions.
Castiglione della Pescaia is an active
participant in implementing the recreational
physical exercise sports project
“Sport Amico” with a contribution of
about € 2,500 per year and the “National
Day of Sport”, for which the town
provides an area of the public beach for
the event.
How does the council cooperate with
educational institutions at local, national
and European level
Through an ongoing collaboration with
primary schools and secondary schools,
the municipality promotes projects aimed
at the recognition of physical activity as
a basis for a complete and harmonious
development of young people. In addition
to the aforementioned projects (Sport
Amico, the National Day of Sport and
Youth Games), a new project was born in
October 2012, called “Play and Repair”,
created by the Punta Ala football club,
with the support and cooperation of the
town of Castiglione. This new experience
is designed to create a real classroom
study scenario, with the assistance of
volunteer teachers. These volunteers,
before giving soccer and volleyball training
to participating children, follow them
as they do their homework. Only once
they have finished their studies can the
children play sport. The administration
also encourages the promotion of noncurricular
sport through activities that
a number of sports federations introduce
into the school: instructors teach sailing,
tennis and hockey during the school day.

The excellence of the ​Castiglione area
lies in the two components of its two
natural components: the sea and the
land. We intend, in the future, to host any
number of events that suit our situation,
even if they come from sports associations
outside our area.
Another important purpose of the administration
is to make as accessible
as possible the courses organised by
sports clubs. For this purpose, we have

Tutte le associazioni presenti sul nostro
territorio sono iscritte al C.O.N.I. e l’Amministrazione
Comunale ritiene questo
requisito fondamentale per l’attribuzione
di patrocini ed eventuali contributi finanziari.
Castiglione della Pescaia partecipa
attivamente alla realizzazione del progetto
ludico motorio sportivo “Sport amico”
con un contributo di circa 2.500 euro
all’anno e alla “Giornata nazionale dello
sport”, per la quale il Comune mette a
disposizione un’area di spiaggia pubblica
attrezzata per la realizzazione dell’evento.
Come coopera l’Amministrazione comunale
con le Istituzioni scolastiche a
livello locale, nazionale ed europeo
Attraverso una continua collaborazione
con le scuole primarie e secondarie di
primo grado, il Comune promuove i progetti
mirati al riconoscimento dell’attività
motoria come basilare per un completo
sviluppo armonico dei giovani. Oltre ai
già citati progetti (Sport amico, Giornata
nazionale dello sport e i Giochi della gioventù),
nell’ottobre 2012 nasce “Gioca e
ripara” realizzato dalla Fc Punta Ala con il
patrocinio e la collaborazione del Comune
di Castiglione della Pescaia. Questa nuova
esperienza si prefigge di creare delle
vere e proprie aule studio con l’assistenza
di docenti volontari che, prima degli allenamenti
sportivi di calcio e pallavolo
a cui parteciperanno i bambini, saranno
a disposizione per seguirli nei compiti
scolastici. Solo dopo aver terminato l’impegno
con lo studio i giovani potranno
dedicarsi allo sport. Inoltre, l’Amministrazione
favorisce la promozione di sport non
curriculari attraverso l’attività che alcune
federazioni sportive realizzano all’interno
delle strutture scolastiche: istruttori federali
insegnano durante l’orario scolastico
vela, tennis e hockey.
Come considera il suo comune, anche
rispetto ad altri municipi, relativamente
alle proprie qualità speciali, i punti di
forza ed i profili eccellenti ed in relazione
al titolo ACES di Town of Sport
Come verranno implementati nel comune
i cinque obiettivi dell’ACES per lo
sviluppo dello sport
Quali iniziative ed attività verranno intraprese
dal vostro comune per contribuire
al lavoro di ACES-EUROPE
Le eccellenze presenti sul territorio di
Castiglione della Pescaia sono date dagli
elementi che costituiscono il patrimonio
naturale: il mare e il territorio. Tutte le
attività sportive legate alla nostra realtà
saranno implementate anche grazie alla
cospicua quantità di eventi e manifestazioni
che il nostro Comune ha l’intenzione
di ospitare in futuro anche laddove
provengano da associazioni sportive non
locali.
Altro importante scopo dell’Amministrazione
è rendere quanto più possibile accessibili
i corsi organizzati dalle società

created a financial support plan, up to
a maximum of 40% of the cost of sports
courses, for those families living in the
town who have particular ISEE status.
The project, called “Buono Sport” (Sports
Voucher), is aimed at children of up to
16 years and is extended to children who
participate in summer activities and
those who practice sport discipline outside
the municipal area.
The policies aimed in favour of participation,
social inclusion and integration
that the administration intends to implement
and support, will meet the requirements
of the disabled, the elderly and
immigrants.
The municipality intends to organise
interdisciplinary courses, linking sport
and cultural events. In the next editions
of the international festival of children’s
picture books, Libritutti, which takes
place during the autumn, we will create
workshops with activities related to publications
dedicated to sport for children.
In the autumn of 2012, we inaugurated
the “Strada del Contemporaneo”, where
contemporary artistic installations find
a new home in an old, decommissioned
provincial road, which will become a
cycling path for the discovery of art. To
promote exchange with the various European
countries, the municipality of
Castiglione teamed up in 2012 with the
Punta Ala football club to take part in a
beginner’s category football tournament
in Stockholm. In 2013, this experience
will be repeated and we will participate
in a similar event in Ireland. The administration
intends to repeat these experiences
in years to come.
Projects encouraged by the municipality
also include the restoration of the
game of Polo, through the Punta Ala
Cavalli association. The aim is to give
new life to the competitions that were
traditionally held up to the 80s, by taking
on new international engagements.
To expand more and more our sports
portfolio and to better use our wonderful
natural resources, we intend to establish
a new Castiglione rowing club, which
will resume the rowing activity that was
interrupted in the 90s. The river Bruna
is perfectly suited to this type of activity
because of its navigable length; it is not
by chance that it hosts summer training
sessions for rowing clubs from other areas
of Tuscany.

un determinato indice Isee. Il progetto
denominato “Buono sport” è rivolto ai ragazzi
fino ai 16 anni ed è esteso anche ai
ragazzi che svolgono attività estiva e chi
pratica la sua disciplina fuori dal territorio
comunale. Diversamente abili, anziani
e immigrati troveranno piena rispondenza
alle loro aspettative grazie alle buone
politiche di partecipazione, inclusione sociale
e integrazione che l’Amministrazione
ha intenzione di implementare e favorire
. Il Comune intende realizzare percorsi
interdisciplinari tra lo sport e gli eventi
culturali: nelle prossime edizioni del Festival
Internazionale del Libro Illustrato
per bambini Libritutti, che si svolge durante
il periodo autunnale, è prevista la
creazione di laboratori con attività legate
alle pubblicazioni dedicate allo sport per
i più piccoli. Nell’autunno 2012 è stata
inaugurata la Strada del Contemporaneo:
installazioni di artisti troveranno nuova
sede in una vecchia strada provinciale
dismessa. Qui, saranno realizzati di percorsi
di cicloturismo alla scoperta dell’arte.
Per incentivare gli scambi con i diversi
paesi europei, il Comune di Castiglione
ha partecipato nel 2012, attraverso l’Associazione
Fc Punta Ala, ad un torneo di
calcio Categoria esordienti, che si è svolto
a Stoccolma. Nel 2013 questa esperienza
verrà ripetuta partecipando ad una manifestazione
similare che si terrà in Irlanda.
La volontà dell’Amministrazione è quella
di rendere questa tipologia di appuntamenti
come consuetudine per gli anni a
venire. Nei progetti sollecitati dal Comune
rientra anche il ripristino delle attività
legate al gioco del Polo a cura dell’Associazione
Punta Ala Cavalli che si prefigge
di dare nuova vita alle tradizionali competizioni
che si svolgevano fino agi anni ’80
grazie a nuovi appuntamenti di carattere
internazionale. Per le stesse motivazioni,
per allargare sempre di più l’offerta sportiva
e per utilizzare una splendida risorsa
naturale vi è la volontà di fondare un
nuovo Circolo Canottieri Castiglionese per
riprendere l’attività remiera che fu interrotta
negli anni ’90. Il fiume Bruna bene si
adatta a questo tipo di attività per la sua
lunga percorrenza: non a caso infatti è
sede di allenamenti estivi da parte di canottieri
provenienti da altri circoli toscani.
