Lucca Film festival, decima edizione.
Rieccoci qua, dopo solo 6 mesi, ad una nuova edizione
del Lucca film festival.
Edizione speciale e germinale, poiché inaugura una fase
nuova dell’evento da tutti i punti di vista: Marzo sarà
d’ora in avanti il periodo di riferimento del festival, che
andrà a coprire un lasso di tempo stanco per gli eventi
cinematografici nazionali e mondiali, diventando quindi il
centro dell’attenzione degli amanti del cinema.
Ma parlando della sezione che compete chi scrive, come
è stato possibile creare un altro concorso di cortometraggi
sperimentali in così poco tempo?
Purtroppo abbiamo dovuto prendere una drastica decisione,
evitare l’apertura di un bando, che avrebbe avuto
uno spazio vitale troppo corto per risultati soddisfacenti.
C’è stato invece un grande lavoro di ricerca da parte di
molti collaboratori della sezione, che ringrazio davvero,
e soprattutto, un periodo produttivo nel 2014 incredibile,
che ha visto generare opere interessanti e fresche
in tutto il mondo, che noi abbiamo attentamente selezionato.
È stato veramente piacevole vedere arrivare
opere di qualità così alta, ed è stato a volte un dispiacere
escludere alcune di esse in favore di altre.
Fra i partecipanti, come lo scorso anno, vi è un amalgama
interessante tra esordienti e nomi illustri nel loro
campo, come Alessandro Amaducci, videoartista torinese
di grande rilevanza nel panorama italiano, Nicolas
Provost, regista e visual artist belga di fama internazionale,
in concorso con un corto corrosivo e provocatorio,
e Graham Greene, attore candidato all’Oscar, protagonista
di uno dei corti del concorso, “Circle of life” diretto

Lucca Film Festival, 10th Edition.
Here we are again. After only six months, we are inaugurating
a new edition of the Lucca Film Festival.
A special edition in its infancy phase as the event moves
into a new developmental stage from all points of view.
To start with, from now on the Festival will take place in
March, a time of year that until now has offered no major
film events in Italy and abroad. Lucca, therefore, becomes
the center of attention and focus for movie lovers.
Speaking of the section that falls under my responsibility,
how has it been possible to put together another experimental
short film contest in such a brief time?
Unfortunately, we had to make a drastic decision - not to
open a call for entries, which would have had too small a
window to produce satisfactory results. Instead, our staff
carried out a great deal of research; and I would like to
thank them for their incredible effort. An amazingly productive
2014 generated interesting and lively works from
around the world. It is from that pool that we have carefully
selected the short films that will compete in the 2015 Experimental
Short Film Contest. It was wonderful to screen
works of such high quality; at times, it was hard to exclude
some in favor of others.
Similarly to last year, participants are an interesting mix of
newcomers and well-known names. Alessandro Amaducci,
the video artist from Turin and well established on the Italian
scene; Nicolas Provost, internationally renowned Belgian
director and visual artist who is competing with a corrosive
and provocative short film; Graham Greene, Oscar nomenee
actor, that plays the main role in one of the short of the
competition, “Circle of life” directed by Ray Arthur Wang.
da Ray Arthur Wang. Inoltre abbiamo avuto una felice
affluenza di opere provenienti dall’Asia, per cui ci sarà
all’interno della sezione uno sguardo interessante al cinema
sperimentale d’animazione coreano, veramente di
grande potenza.
La giuria internazionale, al suo secondo anno di vita, sarà
composta anche questa volta da nomi importanti e dai
background variegati, ovvero: Mason Shefa, giovanissimo
regista sperimentale americano lanciato nel mondo della
videoarte, Cynthia Tompkins, professoressa presso l’
Arizona State University e autrice di molti libri sul cinema
sperimentale sudamericano, Francesco Alò, giornalista
e critico italiano, autore dell’unica monografia italiana
dedicata ai Monty Python; Antoni Pinent, regista sperimentale
e videoartista spagnolo. Il concorso, ci piace
ribadirlo, è particolare per il tipo di opere che propone,
ma è proprio per questo interessante perchè dà spazio
ad un mondo audiovisivo sconosciuto a molti, e offre
uno spaccato sui nuovi linguaggi che ogni anno vengono
sperimentati da migliaia di registi e che contribuiscono a
creare la storia del cinema contemporaneo.
Anche quest’anno non resta che sedersi in sala a lasciarsi
assorbire dalle immagini, e che vinca il migliore!

We also had a successful turnout of works from Asia, so
there will be a special focus on Korean experimental film
animation within the section: truly incredibly powerful.
The International Jury celebrates its second anniversary
and again for this edition will be made up by famous names
with varied backgrounds. Mason Shefa, a very young
American experimental filmmaker renowned in the world
of video art; Cynthia Tompkins, a professor at Arizona
State University and the author of many books on South
American experimental cinema; Francesco Alò, an Italian
journalist and critic, author of the only Italian monograph on
Monty Python; Antoni Pinent, a spanish experimental film
director and video artist. I would like to highlight once again
that our Experimental Short Film Contest stands apart because
of the kinds of works it showcases. What makes the
competition so interesting is that it shines a spotlight on
an audiovisual world that is unknown to many and offers
insight into new languages that every year are tested by
thousands of directors and which contribute to creating the
history of contemporary cinema.
As in past editions, just come to the movie theatre and
enjoy the show. And may the best win!
