Diquesti, circa 6 mila si trovano neldistretto <strong>della</strong> Riviera di Ponente.L’Italia non è solo produttrice difiori, ma anche importatrice. Oltre13 mila tonnellate di fiori arrivanodall’estero, per un valore di circa72 milioni di euro all’anno,principalmente da Kenya, Ecuador,Colombia, anche se spesso sonoprima transitati in Olanda.<strong>Il</strong> consumo di fiori recisi nell’Ueè stimato intorno ai 13 miliardidi euro annui. I più importantimercati: Germania, Regno Unito,Francia e Italia. <strong>Il</strong> consumo procapite nei mercati più importati èintorno ai 30-50 euro l’anno.Nel mondo, 550 mila ettaridi terreno sono destinati alleproduzioni di piante e fiori, per unvalore che raggiunge quasi 25miliardi di euro e coinvolge circa160 mila aziende.<strong>Il</strong> paese leader per produzione edesportazione è il Kenya: nel 2010ha esportato fiori per 254 milionidi dollari, corrispondenti a 77.029tonnellate di fiori recisi, di cui1.424 tonnellate sono rose..Bisogno di tutela e qualitàLavoratrice in una serradel Kenya. La campagna“Fiori e diritti” intendesensibilizzare i consumatorisui problemi ambientalie la violazione dei diritti umaniche avviene nelle serredi tanti paesi del mondosi il terreno, pazientemente coltivato peranni, viene riconvertito ad area edificabilee utilizzato come superficie per costruirenuovi palazzi. Al valore agricolosi sostituisce quello immobiliare, di piùfacile e immediato realizzo, specie intempi di crisi».La perdita che ne consegue non è dapoco, dal punto di vista ambientale enon solo: si genera una crisi dell’occupazionelocale, sia per il lavoro dipendenteche per la piccola imprenditoriaa carattere familiare, storicamente protagonista<strong>della</strong> produzione floristica<strong>della</strong> Riviera.«Ma il danno non è solo tra le muradi casa nostra – aggiunge Calvi –. I grandinumeri dei concorrenti d’Africa e d’Americadevono indurci a riflettere, perchéin questi paesi il costo <strong>della</strong> manodoperapuò essere anche quindici volteinferiore a quello dei paesi europei, afronte di un costo sociale e ambientaleesorbitante».La produzione di fiori in paesi delSud del mondo, infatti, ha spesso graviimplicazioni ambientali e socioeconomiche:è causa di danni ecologici irreparabili,soprattutto per quanto riguardal’uso dei pesticidi e la contaminazionedell’acqua, nei numerosi passaggichimici (anche fino a 80!) dal trattamentosul suolo sino all’impacchettamentodel fiore. A questo va aggiuntol’enorme consumo di acqua per irrigazione,con cui si sottraggono risorse idrichealle popolazioni locali in territoritalvolta tendenzialmente aridi. Sul versante<strong>della</strong> tutela del lavoro le cose nonvanno meglio: i lavoratori delle serre, inlarga misura donne e bambini, lavoranoin condizioni di sostanziale schiavitùsino a 80 ore alla settimana. Molteplicisono i casi di molestie sessuali e licenziamentiarbitrari a danno dei lavoratorie risulta esclusa qualunque forma ditutela, dall’assistenza sanitaria alla libertàdi aderire a un sindacato.«Noi crediamo – spiega Calvi – cheuno sviluppo con un impatto del generenon può proseguire indisturbato.Proprio su questo il movimento “Fiori ediritti” vuole intervenire. <strong>Il</strong> nostro primoimpegno è diffondere la conoscenza diqueste realtà tra i consumatori. Comeper il mercato del cacao o del caffè, incui si è andata sviluppando negli anniuna coscienza critica di consumo, cosìnoi vorremmo fare per i fiori».Uno strumento: la certificazioneLe iniziative, in questo senso, non mancano,perché “Fiori e diritti” è già datempo operante con progetti di sensibilizzazionee informazione. Oltre a campagnemirate in vista di festività (San Valentinoe la Festa <strong>della</strong> mamma), “Fiori ediritti” ha avviato un laboratorio dal titolo“Fiori di cotone”, una sorta di incontroin cui l’attività manuale (si realizzanofiori con stoffe e materiali di recupero)diventa occasione per informarsie confrontarsi sul tema.«<strong>Il</strong> nostro intento non è certo disincentivareil consumo di fiori, specie inun momento di crisi come l’attuale –spiega Calvi –; piuttosto, intendiamosensibilizzare il consumatore e proporglidi provare a informarsi sulla provenienzadei propri acquisti. L’unica rispostaall’attuale crisi locale del settore èvalorizzare i produttori attenti all’impattodel loro lavoro, premiandoli conuna certificazione socio-ambientale adhoc, che dia conto <strong>della</strong> tracciabilità <strong>della</strong>filiera. I consumatori ormai hannouna coscienza critica e sapranno premiarecon le loro scelte gli operatori virtuosi.Ma perché questo sia possibile,occorre che tutti, a partire dalle associazionidi categoria, siano motivati ad agirein questa direzione, anziché puntaresulle delocalizzazioni».La direzione di marcia proposta daCristiano Calvi è difficile, ma già tracciata:«Esistono produzioni storiche, altamentespecializzate, nelle quali i floricoltori<strong>della</strong> Riviera non hanno mai cessatodi primeggiare. Basta pensare al ranuncolodi Sanremo, così come allaginestra, al ruscus o alla mimosa».In tutte queste piante, coltivate dapiù di cent’anni, esistono ancora competenze,storie di cose e di persone diraccontare. È giusto che anche i consumatoripossano venire a conoscerle.
