www.ascima.bham.ac.ukvINTRODUCTIONThe Scherzi musicali of 1632 in ContextMonteverdi published madrigals and otherforms of secular music throughout his career. Hisfirst book of canzonette for three voices and hisfirst book of five-part madrigals were publishedin 1584 and 1587 respectively, the first when thecomposer was 17 and the second when he was 19years old and still living at his parental home atCremona. In 1590 Monteverdi was appointed to thecappella of the ducal court at Mantua, and issuedhis second book of madrigals, the last on whichhe acknowledged himself a pupil of Marc’AntonioIngegneri, choirmaster of Cremona Cathedral. The madrigal ‘Ecco mormorar l’onde’, includedin that book, however, shows Monteverdi alreadylooking towards Mantua since it is modelled ontwo madrigals by Giaches de Wert, choirmaster atthe Mantuan court. 1 The madrigals of Monteverdi’sBooks III to VI (1592, 1603, 1605 and 1614respectively) and the first book of Scherzi musicali(1607) seem to belong entirely to his Mantuanyears; Book VI, though published one year afterMonteverdi took up his appointment as choirmasterof S. Marco, Venice, was in preparation as early as1610. 21. 21.
