The Valaisan are headstrong! This is the least of their
faults . . . They identify with their summits which reach
to four thousand metres and more: their pride is only
equalled by their feeling of being unique. Wilful or obsti-
nate? Traits of character that are also found in their
unique breed of cows that fight each other to be crowned
queen of the herd. The Valaisan spirit can be felt in and
around the arenas during these combats: plain-spoken,
mischievous, with a fighting spirit. The same passions that
they show when raising a glass of Fendant to propose a
toast to friendship or when they suggest a tasty raclette.
The respect shown to the Grenadiers when they parade
in ceremonial costume is tangible and communicates
itself to the guest who has chosen to enjoy the discreet
charms of a mountain village. A different range of emo-
tions is shared during an open air festival which features
a Joe Cocker or other famous name from the world of
pop music. Some visitors prefer the more restrained at-
mosphere of a classical music concert while others like
to sing and sway in time to a lively melody played on
an accordion or flute accompanying a yodel group.
In summer the Valaisan enjoy going to their chalets
where they take part in the same activities as their guests:
golf, hiking, trekking, adventure sports, walking along-
side irrigation channels and streams or alpine wellness
beside the numerous small mountain lakes.
The dialects spoken by very different levels of society
are as varied and incomparable as this land of contrasts,
situated between the mountain peaks with their glaciers,
and the fertile valley with its orchards of apricots. The
golden fruits bask in the sunshine and their juicy sweetness
has also contributed to Valais’ fame.
The Valaisan character is as unique as the features
that make up his homeland: the largest glaciers in the
Alps, the largest number of mountain peaks over 4000
metres high, the highest vineyards in Europe, saffron
fields, mountain transport installations perched at high
altitudes and a population made from the same mould.

difetto . . . Si accomuna alle sue cime di quattro mila
metri e più; la sua fierezza non ha altro che il sentimento
d’essere unico. Volontà o testardaggine? Chi potrebbe
condannare l’uno o l’altro quando si pensa a questo
popolo che incoraggia le sue regine a combattere per

Il rispetto per i granatieri che sfilano in costume d’ordi-
nanza é comunicativo e l’ospite che sceglie il fascino
discreto d’un villaggio di montagna si contamina necessariamente.
Lo stesso sentimento di condivisione durante
un festival open air che annuncia un Joe Cocker o altri
grandi personaggi della musica pop. Alcuni preferiscono
il tono più nobile di un concerto di musica classica mentre
altri si godono una melodia jodler accompagnata da una
fisarmonica o da un clarinetto.
D’estate, i Vallesani amano salire in montagna dove
praticano le stessa attività che i loro ospiti: golf, escursioni,
trekking, avventure sportive, passeggiate lungo i cana-
li ed i ruscelli o del wellness alpino vicino ai numerosi
laghetti di montagna.
Incomparabili sono i loro dialetti che si parlano
nei differenti ambienti sociali. Un contrasto nato
dalla vicinanza dei ghiacciai di montagna e
gli albicocchi della pianura, che abbondano
di sole e riconoscono al Vallese la reputazione
come località con i più lunghi ghiacciai
delle Alpi.
Il Vallesano è quello che è grazie ai superlativi
che caratterizzano il paese: i più grandi
ghiacciai, i più numerosi quattro mila delle Alpi;
la coltura dello zafferano, i vigneti più alti d’Europa,
impianti di risalita che si arrampicano in alto e una
popolazione fatta tutta d’un pezzo. Qui, tutto è diverso!

Goms
Time for adventure
There is absolutely no point in bringing a gameboy or portable computer to Goms because it is simply impossible to become bored here. Whether
you wish to contemplate part of a mythical ridge or to travel from village to village on the back of a mule, to take a course with Donna Leon, author
of detective stories, or simply take golf lessons, there is an amazingly wide palette to choose from – and everything is completely natural. For
sports enthusiasts or those who prefer a leisurely stroll, a network of some 700 km of signposted hiking trails and cycle paths offers the perfect
way to discover the enchanting holiday kingdom between Oberwald and Grengiols. Downhill mountain bike tracks, trekking with lamas or river
rafting – Goms offers a wealth of sporting challenges. It is even home to the steepest high altitude trail in Switzerland, leading to the Eggishorn.
While you are getting your breath back at the summit, do not forget to admire the magnificent round view of the Aletsch and Fiesch Glacier. Simply
arriving in Goms is a pleasure in itself: crossing the famous mountain passes over the Grimsel, Furka or Nufenen not only reveals the splendid
vistas across the mountains of Upper Valais but also allows you to discover the Rhone Glacier Grotto or the crystalline fault on the Grimsel.

Quando ci si reca a Goms, è inutile portare il proprio gameboy o il proprio computer portatile. Infatti, è impossibile annoiarsi. Sia che si scelga
di contemplare un lembo di cresta mitica o di viaggiare a dorso di mulo da villaggio in villaggio, di frequentare un corso di formazione da Donna
Leon, l’autrice dei romanzi polizieschi o semplicemente di frequentare un corso di golf, l’offerta è estremamente diversificata – e totalmente
naturale. Per i grandi sportivi o per i tranquilli amanti della camminata, i circa 700 km di percorsi per escursionisti e di piste ciclabili segnalate
rappresentano il mezzo migliore per scoprire l’incantevole comprensorio di vacanze tra Oberwald e Grengiols. Discesa in VTT, trekking a dorso
di lama o rafting – Goms è molto ricca di sfide sportive. Anche il più ripido percorso d’altitudine della Svizzera porta all’Eggishorn. Una volta
arrivati sulla cima, mentre si riprende fiato, non bisogna perdersi la vista circolare sul ghiacciaio d’Aletsch e Fiesch. L’arrivo a Goms rappresen-
ta di già un piacere: la traversata dei colli di Grimsel, Furka o Nufenen, non apre soltanto la vista sulle montagne dell’Alto Vallese, ma permette
ugualmente di scoprire la grotta del ghiacciaio del Rodano o la faglia cristallina del Grimsel.

Region Aletsch
UNESCO world heritage site
Take a royal tour of the UNESCO world nature heritage site around the Aletsch Glacier (23 km), the largest glacier in the Alps. The town of Brig lies
at the gateway to the Aletsch region. The car-free resorts of Belalp, Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp lie close to the glacier. The viewpoint
on the Eggishorn (2926 m altitude) is the crowning glory. This is where the UNESCO altitude trail to the Bettmerhorn begins or ends. The interactive
ICE World show on the Bettmerhorn gives you a fascinating glimpse into the majestic realm of the glaciers. The panoramic UNESCO trail, from
Belalp to the Upper Aletsch hut, is an innovation. The highlight is an open air show, the glacier circus, which makes a stopover in Belalp. Mountain
bike trails take you down towards the valley bottom, from Riederalp to Fiescheralp. The Riederalp golf course is a pleasure to play on. In Fiesch,
paragliders make the most of the best thermal currents in the Alps. The spa baths in Breiten, swimming pools in the valley, canyoning in the Massa
Gorges, the Aletsch via ferrata, climbing for children or pleasant evenings in Brig all contribute towards improved well-being and good health.
Patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO
Alla scoperta d’una tappa reale nel patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO, intorno al ghiacciaio d’Aletsch (23 km), il più grande ghiacciaio delle Alpi.
La cittadina di Briga è la porta dell’Aletsch. Le stazioni senza macchine di Belalp, Riederalp, Bettmeralp e Fiescheralp sono contigui al ghiacciaio.
Il punto d’osservazione dell’Eggishorn (altitudine: 2926 m) ne rappresenta il coronamento. E’ da questo punto che comincia o termina il percorso
d’altitudine dell’UNESCO verso il Bettmerhorn. Sul Bettmerhorn lo spettacolo interattivo ICE-Welt (il mondo del Ghiaccio) permette di scoprire
cose affascinanti sui ghiacciai. Il percorso panoramico dell’UNESCO, che porta da Belalp all’Oberaletschhütte, rappresenta una novità. Il top: uno
spettacolo all’aperto, il circo del ghiacciaio, fa tappa a Belalp. Piste segnalate per VTT conducono verso il fondo valle, da Riederalp a Fiescheralp.
Il percorso da golf di Riederalp ha diritto a tutti gli onori. Nel cielo di Fiesch, i parapendii volano approfittando delle migliori correnti termiche delle
Alpi. I bagni termali di Breiten, le piscine della valle, il canyoning nelle gole della Massa, la via ferrata d’Aletsch, la scalata per ragazzi o le serate
conviviali sui pergolati a Briga, tante possibilità al servizio del benessere e della salute.

Hiking Paradise in the UNESCO Nature Heritage Site
Over 700 km of hiking trails through unique countryside await you within the UNESCO designated ”Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn” region. This
area, which is now a world nature heritage site, contains some of the most beautiful hikes the Alps have to offer. Here you can put your best foot
forward on such well-known routes as: the trails leading to the Lötschen, Gemmi or Resti Passes, the path along the North or South ramp of the

Saas-Fee – Saastal
The Pearl of the Alps
13 four thousand metre peaks proudly line the idyllic Saas Valley. Saas-Fee, the traffic free resort at the foot of the glacier, also known as

delle Alpi», come pure le località di Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell e Saas-Balen sono rimaste, nonostante la loro rinomanza internazionale, dei
simpatici e tranquilli villaggi di montagna. Il più alto Metro delle Alpi del mondo vi condurrà nel cuore della regione «Allalin» con, in primo piano,
l’imponente montagna di neve e ghiaccio che porta lo stesso nome. È opportuna una visita al più grande padiglione dei ghiacci e al più alto risto-
rante del mondo. Darsi alle escursioni nel cuore di questo splendido decoro, lungo 350 km di sentieri, dar da mangiare alle marmotte, scoprire i

With 299 1/2 days, the village of Grächen has held the annual sunshine record for several years now. Grächen has become a second home for

From the banks of the Rhone to the snow-clad summits, from sport to folklore, from the most ancient traditions to state of the art facilities, in other
words . . . from the vineyards to the eternal snow! The Central Valais Tourist Region offers as many attractions as the variety of features in the
beautiful landscape. Following a terraced pattern, the inhabited zones stretch from 500 to 2000 metres in altitude and are dominated by peaks
reaching to over 4000 metres. In summer there are numerous possibilities for all kinds of hikes, from level paths in the valley to steep climbs to the

Hiking has become fashionable.
Today it is even a cult sport because
it is synonymous with well-being.
Valais does not need to adapt to follow
this trend, it has been in the forefront
for years. Generations of mountaineers,
hikers and walkers can testify

Escursioni in Vallese
L’escursione é magnifica . . . Fa
molto tendenza! Oggi, è lo sport culto
perché è sinonimo di benessere. Il
Vallese non deve mettersi al passo
con i tempi. C’é già! Certamente non
diranno il contrario gli appassionati
della montagna o gli amanti della
marcia tranquilla.
I patiti della marcia hanno il prurito
nelle suole. Deve essere contagioso
poiché, attualmente, chi è colui che
resiste ad una passeggiata lungo un
canale (bisse), che permette anche la
scoperta di una flora e di una fauna
inimmaginabile? Chi è colui che
non s’impegna su uno dei numerosi
percorsi tematici che serpeggiano
le nostre foreste e vanno fino ai piedi
delle nostre montagne? L’escursione,
é un classico dell’estate che si pro-
lunga fino al tardo autunno.
Sulla buona strada
La marcia ha virtù terapeutiche,
arricchite ancora in un clima e un decoro
come è possibile solo in Vallese
dove l’aria fresca della montagna è
vivificante, dove i ghiacciai, le foreste,
i prati, i vigneti sono delle nature
viventi che compongono un decoro
unico per il piacere degli occhi, la
tranquillità dello spirito. Qui, la natura
permette tutte le fantasie e presta le
sue ricchezze a tutti coloro che apprezzano

Summer concerts, lessons given by mas-
ters and a wide diversity of events in the
field of classical music over the past three
decades have brought Ernen growing
attention from the media and from an ever
increasing public. The village of music
has now become the Mecca of music! In
the summer of 2006, the village’s music as-
sociation will once again stimulate the cu-
riosity of its visitors. The annual programme
features surprises and chosen pieces: piano
recitals, baroque music, chamber music
and concerts. To celebrate its renovation,
the organ will reveal the beauty of its notes,
combined with those of a flute, during a
concert organised specifically for this grand
occasion. In July, if music reigns supreme,
writing will nevertheless proclaim its noble
heritage through a seminar on the theme of
“creative writing”.
Da più di tre decenni, grazie ai concerti
dati durante l’estate, ai corsi prodigati dai
maestri e alle differenti manifestazioni nel
campo della musica classica, Ernen conosce
un successo sempre maggiore presso
il pubblico ed i media. Il villaggio della
musica è veramente divenuto la Mecca
della musica. L’estate 2006, l’Associazione
del Villaggio della musica stimolerà nuovamente
la curiosità dei suoi visitatori. Nel
programma annuale sorprese e brani scelti:
recital di piano, musica barocca, musica
da camera e concerti. Per festeggiare la
sua rinnovazione, l’organo ci farà sentire
le sue note migliori, abbinate a quelle di
un flauto, durante un concerto organizzato
specialmente per queste solennità musicali.

The famous pianist, Eliane Rodrigues,
will once again be the guest of honour
at the ninth edition of Mùsica Romântica,
two weeks devoted to recitals, chamber
and symphony music. Each year the heart
of this glacier village beats to the rhythm
of its classical music festival, “Mùsica
Romântica”. In the tranquillity of a resort
without cars, far from the feverish activity
of large cities, classical music creates a
rare and unique atmosphere.
La nona edizione di Mùsica Romântica
mette ancora una volta in evidenza la
celebre pianista Eliane Rodrigues. Due
settimane consacrate ai recital, alla musi-
ca da camera e alla musica sinfonica.

The Gampel Open Air has grown considerably
over the past two years, when it
welcomed 80,000 visitors over 4 days. This
has made Gampel one of the most popular
open air festivals in Switzerland. Last year
it celebrated its 20th anniversary. Some

on stage in Gampel, they include Joe
Cocker, Deep Purple, PINK, Korn, Everlast,

Diversity in the Alps: minerals, birds, mammals.
The great diversity of alpine landscapes, vegetation and fauna,
as seen in Valais, is illustrated by displays of the most important
animals and birds such as: wild boars, bearded vultures, wolves
and lynx as well as deer, ibex and beavers. Exotic animals remind
us of the history of the museum whereas crystals and minerals
captivate visitors with their fascinating shapes and colours.
Valuable items have been added to the Paleolithic showcases
and a cave bear is a reminder of the animals that disappeared
before the last ice age. The dinosaur footprints from Old Emosson
Finhaut are an impressive relic of the long history of the Alps.
Diversità sulle Alpi: minerali, uccelli, mammiferi.
La grande diversità dei paesaggi, della vegetazione e della fauna
del Vallese e delle Alpi è suggerita dalla messa in scena dei mammiferi
e degli uccelli più rappresentativi: cinghiali, avvoltoi
degli agnelli, lupi, linci, ma anche cervi, stambecchi e castori.
Gli animali esotici rammentano la storia del museo, mentre cristalli
e minerali mostrano una diversità accattivante di forme e colori.
Le vetrine di paleontologia si sono arricchite di alcuni pezzi di
valore, e un orso delle caverne ci rammenta la fauna scomparsa
prima dell’ultima glaciazione. Le impronte di dinosauri del Vieux
Emosson Finhaut evocano il lungo passato delle Alpi.

Treasures on the Trail: Treasures to discover . . .
The Cantonal Historical Museum has chosen the title Treasures
on the Trail, for the novel vision of Valaisan history it presents via
this exhibition of 700 objects in 15 rooms. The layout is original
in both concept and content and places the history of Valais in a
European context. Dynamic presentation links past and present in
a new way. There are objects for visitors to handle, links between
single objects and the collection in its entirety, historic witnesses
to our past in picture and sound . . .

Sotto il titolo evocatore di Tesori in questione, il museo cantonale
di storia presenta circa 700 oggetti suddivisi in 15 sale e ci propone
una visione inedita della storia vallesana. Una esposizione
innovativa sia dal punto di vista concettuale che da quello contenutistico;
una visione che pone il Vallese in un contesto europeo;
una presentazione dinamica che lega presente e passato in modo
nuovo; un percorso che da ad ognuno la possibilità di sperimentare

The Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts presents a selection
of masterpieces from its collection that covers the period from
the C18th to the present day. The grey exterior walls of the
venerable Château de la Majorie house exhibition rooms full of
colour, some festive, others more intimate. Visitors are invited
to admire works by Caspar Wolf, Raphael Ritz, Le Déserteur,
Ernest Biéler, Edouard Vallet, Albert Chavaz, Equipo 57,
Gottfried Tritten and many other artists linked to Valais.

The exhibition documents the history of the earliest settlers in the
Rhone Valley, from the paleolithic hunters to the integration of Valais
in the Roman Empire. Objects and life-size models reconstruct the
lives of successive occupants of the canton in chronological order.

fright when examining the masks in the Lötschental museum in
Kippel, do not miss the Perraudin House in Lourtier if you are

tutto sulla navigazione del Lemano andando al Museo delle
barche e delle tradizioni di St-Gingolph; scoprire l’alpinismo alla
Tour Meier di St. Nicolas; farsi paura guardando le maschere al
Museo del Lötschental di Kippel; conoscere la storia dei ghiacciai
recandosi alla casa Perraudin di Lourtier; vedere come vivevano

LIVING AND WORKING ON THE LAKE SHORE: ST. GINGOLPH
Several Valais communes lie along the shores of Lake Geneva. Boat
building and the transport of wood and stones on the lake were the
primary occupation of the inhabitants. The museum of boats and tradi-
tions of Lake Geneva displays models of boats that sailed on the lake
as well as a large diaporama on the ancient modes of transport.
Discover an invention made by a local man, Isaac de Rivaz – the
model of a car with an internal combustion engine, of which he was
the inventor. Another showcase is dedicated to women who were
employed in manufacturing “pearls from the lake” between 1900 and
1970. The pearls were made from fish scales and their sale provided
a welcome source of income.
VIVERE E LAVORARE AI BORDI DEL LAGO: ST-GINGOLPH
Il Vallese conta diversi comuni che si trovano ai bordi del Lago
Lemano. La costruzione di battelli, il trasporto del legno e della pietra
per via lacustre rappresentavano le principali risorse di vita per gli
abitanti. Il Museo delle Barche e delle tradizioni del Lemano, Le propone
diversi modelli di barche che hanno navigato sul lago come pure
un grande diaporama sui modi di trasporto dell’epoca.
Da scoprire anche un’invenzione d’Isaac de Rivaz, ragazzo del luogo.
Si tratta del modello di una macchina con motore a scoppio, dellaquale
è inventore. Un’altra vetrina è dedicata alle signore che tra il 1900 ed
il 1970 erano attive nella manifattura delle «perle del lago» fabbricate
a partire delle scaglie di pesce e la cui vendita era una fonte interessante
di reddito.

ISÉRABLES: THE VILLAGE ON THE SLOPE
A cablecar carries passengers beside steep gorges from Riddes
(500 m alt.) to Isérables (1100 m alt.). The cablecar has been in service
since 1942 and was the real forerunner of the industrialisation of
the village. A small museum was opened in 1966 on the 1st floor of
the arrival station to display objects from the “good old days”.
In 2003, without paying any particular attention to the economic
situation . . . or in spite of it . . . Isérables embarked on the construc-
tion of a new museum in the centre of the village. Its modern archi-
tecture, its artistic museographic displays and its situation perched
on the edge of the cliff, make the museum one of the village’s major
attractions.
IL VILLAGGIO SUL PENDIO: ISÉRABLES
Da Riddes (500 m alt.) una telecabina La fa salire lungo le ripide
gole fino ad Isérables (1100 m alt.). In funzione dal 1942 questa telefe-
rica è stata realmente il precursore dell’industrializzazione del villaggio.
Già dal 1966, un piccolo museo ha aperto le sue porte al 1° piano
della stazione d’arrivo della cabina e presenta le sue collezioni di
oggetti dei bei vecchi tempi.
Senza veramente tenere conto delle difficoltà della congiuntura . . .
o malgrado essa . . .Isérables ha intrapreso nel 2003, la costruzione
di un nuovo museo al centro del villaggio. A parte la sua architettura
moderna e la messa in scena museografica ed artistica, questo museo
appollaiato sulla falesia è uno dei punti forti d’attrazione del luogo.
STROLL AROUND AN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM:
THE SIMPLON ECOMUSEUM
Kaspar Stockalper (1609 – 1691) was one of the important persona-
lities of the time. He was a businessman who made his fortune out of
transporting goods across the Simplon. The mule track from Brig to
Gondo that Stockalper financed lies at the heart of the route that linked
France and Italy. This track has been redeveloped since the 1990s.
The Stockalper Trail is a popular excursion destination. Travellers
can, in accordance with their own desires, explore the trail in several
short stages or walk the entire trail in a sustained two day hike. Along
the way hikers will come across the ancient inn in Simplon village.

ECOMUSEO DEL SEMPIONE
Kaspar Stockalper (1609-1691) era uno degli importanti uomini dell’
epoca. Questo imprenditore ha costruito la sua fortuna sul trasporto
attraverso il Sempione. Nel centro della via che collegava la Francia
e l’Italia si trova la mulattiera da Briga a Gondo, costruita da Stockalper;
dal 1990 questa strada è stata ristrutturata.
Il sentiero Stockalper è un luogo d’escursione. Il viaggiatore può,
secondo la sua fantasia, percorrerlo in diverse tappe o in una sola
volta, ciò che rappresenta due giorni di marcia sostenuta. Lungo il percorso,
a Sempione Villaggio, il viaggiatore troverà la vecchia locanda,
un punto di sosta che è stato trasformato e che accoglie l’attuale
Ecomuseo del Sempione. Il visitatore potrà scoprire attraverso testi,
fotografie e film, l’attività umana tradizionale di questa regione.

crown. Crowds flock from near and
far in their thousands to watch our
cows battling for the winner’s crown.
Each year this ancient tradition
inspires passionate enthusiasm and
regional pride.
The cows are not allowed to
dictate their own rules for combat.
The contests are very strictly
controlled and take place under
veterinary supervision.
Regional elimination contests
are decisive and it is only at the
cantonal final, which is always held
in Aproz, that the champions face
each other to determine which is the
supreme champion, the “Queen of
queens”. The contestants are also
judged according to their agility,
form and endurance. The animals
selected for the contest have been
reared and trained with this aim
in mind.
Contests
Quando le nostre mucche lottano per la corona, riescono
a smuovere grandi masse di popolazione. Durante la lotta,
la passione e il «fuoco» si sprigionano in ugual misura –
con ardore e primordialità – dagli animali e dagli spettatori.
Rivive quindi una antica tradizione, vera e genuina. Le nostre
mucche non combattono secondo leggi proprie, al contrario:
le competizioni sono severamente regolamentate e soggiaciono
al controllo di un veterinario.
Durante le eliminatorie regionali vengono stabilite le
mucche che potranno partecipare alla finale cantonale di
Aproz. Saranno la rapidità, la resistenza e la forza dimostrate
durante la gara a decidere sull’esito della stessa e quindi
su chi sarà eletta regina delle regine. Su un terreno antistante
a quello di questa importante competizione e – nella spe-
ranza di una vittoria – gli animali vengono trattati e allenati
in funzione di questo ambito traguardo.

Valais Vine and Wine Museum
A museum in two places, Salgesch and Sierre,
traces the history of vines and wine at the heart of
Valaisan culture. A wine educational trail through
the vineyards links the two sites and explains the
wine-grower’s work throughout the year.

Su una superficie di circa 5200 ha, il Vallese riesce
a coltivare più di quaranta vitigni. Questa situazione
eccezionale é possibile grazie ad un clima predestinato,
all’abbondanza delle località votati alla vigna, per la loro
esposizione e la qualità del suolo e al ricco patrimonio
di una eredità vinicola più che millenaria.

Museo vallesano della Vigna e del Vino
Un museo tra due località, Salgesch e Sierre, ripercorre
la storia della vigna e del vino, nel cuore della cultura
