Visit the Province of St. Barbara, CaliforniaJanuary 8 th , 2009Jose Rodriguez Carballo, OFM, MinisterGeneral, and Finian McGinn, OFM, the DefinitorGeneral, left Rome for the United States onthe 7 th of January, 2009. The plane from Europeto New York arrived late. Thanks to somefriars of the Holy Name province, especiallyBrian Jordan, OFM, we easily obtained ticketson the next flight to the West Coast. We arrivedin Los Angeles late that night and weremet by Mel Jurisich, OFM, ex Min. Prov. andPeter Williams, the Visitor General, who droveus to Oceanside where we visited the friars attheir Chapter.The friars had already elected their newProvincial, John Hardin, OFM and their VicarProvincial, Ken Laverone, OFM and on themorning of the 8 th , they elected the definitorium.Jose met many friars in the morning. Heespecially enjoyed speaking with one of hispredecessors, John D. Vaughn, OFM, ex-Min.Gen. Jose R. Carballo, OFM, addressed the assemblyof friars and lay people with whom thefriars share ministry. After his talk, he listenedto the some of the laity speak on how muchthey appreciate collaborating with the friars inministry.In the afternoon, the Minister General presidedat the Mass of Thanksgiving in the historicChurch of the Old Mission San Luis Rey deFrancia, founded in 1789 by Fermin Franciscode Lasuen, OFM, the eighteenth of the CaliforniaMissions. During the Mass, the friars of theProvince of St. Barbara renewed their vows inthe presence of the Minister General.It was a good visit for the Minister. He renewedacquaintances with many friars and metnew ones. He left California impressed with St.Barbara province. It is becoming one of the fewtruly multilingual and multicultural provinces.Many of the friars approached him and spoketo him in Spanish, their second language.Fi n i a n McGi n n, OFM2. Minister General’s visit to the province ofGuadalupe, Albuquerque, NM, USAJanuary 9 th , 2009In the morning of January 9th, the MinisterGeneral, Jose Rodriguez Carballo, OFM, andFinian McGinn, OFM, Definitor General, arrivedin Albuquerque and were met by LarryDunham, OFM, the Minister Provincial andDuaneTorisky, OFM, Definitor and Secretaryof the Province. We were taken to the new ProvincialOffice to meet the friars and to rest fora while. At noon, the Minister presided at theMass and solemn profession of Abel Olivas,OFM, in the parish Church of the Holy Familyin Albuquerque.The attendance of the friars was exceptional.As this was the Minister General’s first visitas Minister General to Guadalupe province, anextremely large number of friars showed upto greet him and to witness the solemn professionof their brother. During the Mass, theMinister spoke about the grace of our originsand the 800 th anniversary. He welcomed Abelinto the Order and expressed his gratitude toAbel’s parents for the gift of their son. Afterthe Mass, all the friars present renewed theirvows to the Minister and received the sign ofpeace from him. It was a very moving celebration.The Minister General also addressed thefriars of the province during the lunch followingthe Mass and had a chance to greet themand visit with them.The construction of the new ProvincialOffice was recently finished. In the evening,the Minister Provincial, Larry Dunham,OFM, the Vicar of the Province, RonaldWalters, OFM, and the friars who live inthe house shared a meal with the two visitorsfrom Rome. After the meal we had a delightfulconversation.As we left for the plane to Rome the nextmorning the Minister remarked to Larry howwonderful the visit was. In such a short time hehad the opportunity to converse with and listento so many fine friars from the SouthwesternUnited States.Fi n i a n McGi n n, OFM
