E SECRETARIATUPRO FORMATIONE ET STUDIIS1. Convocation Congress Continental forFormation in Asia1. Letter of General MinisterRome, May 20, 2010Memorial of Saint Bernardine of SienaDear Provincials and Custodes,May the Lord give you peace! We are all convinced that the quality of formation, whether ongoing or initial, depends onthe evangelical quality of the life of our UniversalFraternity. Our last General Chapter hasonce again confirmed the need to strengthenformation at all levels in order to respond toour vocation and mission as Friars Minor, inorder to become “Bearers of the Gift of theGospel”.It is the Gospel which forms us in the truthof the Christian life and in the radicalism of theconsecrated life. The constant effort to allowourselves to be evangelized in the following ofChrist gives rise to the tension which continuouslyleads to a renewal of formation in theOrder, in a process of “Starting Afresh fromthe Gospel”.The General Chapter, in Mandates 35-37,has requested that the General Definitorium, during the present six-year period, promoteContinental Congresses for Formation, underthe direction of the General Secretariat forFormation and Studies. With this letter we would like to convokethe first of this series of congresses, this oneto be held in Asia, for the conferences of EastAsia and of South Asia, Australia and Oceania. It will be held September 12-19, 2010, inManila, Philippines. Two friars from each Entity are invited toattend: the director of the simply professedand a friar involved in either the Pastoral Careof Vocations or the Postulancy. The themes are those indicated in the Chaptermandates:a. Evaluate the awareness and implementationof the Ratio Formationis Francescanaein the stages of Simple Profession, PastoralCare of Vocations and Postulancy.b. Franciscan formation in the evangelicalcounsels.c. Franciscan formation in sacramental life.d. The accompaniment of those who undertakepriestly ministry. We are convinced that this new “continental”style for Formation Congresses will providean animation that is more concrete, fraternaland realistic for the different reality ofeach continent. This formation is given in thecontext of a globalized world, but with specificcharacteristics in each region. These characteristicscolor the Franciscan way that we liveand the way we do formation. So I ask each of you, my brother Provincialsand Custodes of the Asia Conferences, tofacilitate the active participation of the indicatedfriars from your Entities in this Congress.May Mary Immaculate, virgin madeChurch and woman filled with the Holy Spirit, help you always to begin again the path of ongoingformation, as was the wish of our FatherSaint Francis.May the Lord bless you.Fr.
