2010 SUMMER INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENTThe Orton Family Foundation is offering 1-2 funded summer internships to students interested in land useplanning, civic engagement and community development. The intern(s) will work closely with Foundationstaff to assist in research, writing and other activities in support of core program functions. The intern willbe based in the Foundation’s offices in the Marbleworks complex, Middlebury, Vermont.About the FoundationFounded in 1995 and supported by profits from the Vermont Country Store, The Orton FamilyFoundation works to build vibrant, enduring communities. We help small cities and towns articulate,implement and steward their heart and soul so that they can adapt to change while enhancing theattributes they value most. The Foundation works on the ground primarily in the Northeast and RockyMountain West, while seeking to influence the fields of land use planning and community developmentacross the country. The Foundation promotes inclusive, proactive land use planning and communitydevelopment by providing guidance, tools, research, capital and other support to citizens and leaders.For more information, visit our website at http://www.orton.org.Position Responsibilities• Research and develop content for the Planning Collaborative, a new interactive database ofplanning tools, methods and case studies• Help grow and support Community Almanac, an online tool where people can share stories,photos and videos about their communities• Provide short-term support on individual projects• Support a variety of communications and administrative functions for events, print and electronicmediaKey Qualifications• Affinity for the Foundation’s mission and some knowledge of community planning and civicengagement fields through study and/or work experience• Interest and awareness of land use planning, civic engagement and community development• Excellent writing and editing skills• Excellent research and analysis skills• Strong knowledge of and affinity for computer technologies, including:o Microsoft Office, particularly Word and PowerPointo Interneto GIS mapping (not required)• Strong organizational skills, including ability to work on several projects at the same time• Ability to work independently and as a team member• Interdisciplinary thinking and enthusiasm for learning and experimentation• Willingness to travel• Conscientiousness, dependability and an eye for detail
