MESSAGGIO AI CONNAZIONALI IN OCCASIONE DEL 2 GIUGNO 2013MESSAGE TO OUR COUNTRYMEN IN OCCASION OF JUNE 2, 2013CARI CONNAZIONALI,Sono felice di celebrare con voi questo 2 giugno del 2013, 67esimo anniversariodella fondazione della Repubblica Italiana.E’ un’ occasione che ci riempie di gioia e che ha un profondo significato, anche perchée’ una ulteriore opportunità per celebrare gli eccellenti rapporti di amicizia che esistonofra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti. Rapporti che si fondano fra l’altro proprio sulla presenzadi oltre 25 milioni di americani d’origine italiana e di più di 200.000 cittadini italiani chehanno fatto degli Stati Uniti la loro casa.Non ho bisogno con voi di sottolineare quanto straordinario sia stato il contributodato dagli italiani alla crescita ed allo sviluppo degli Stati Uniti, di quali sacrifici ed eccezionalirisultati questo contributo sia stato intessuto.La celebrazione nel 2013 dell’Anno della Cultura Italiana negli Stati Uniti, con più di 200eventi in oltre 50 città, ci offre proprio l’occasione per riflettere sull’apporto che il nostrogrande Paese ha dato alla cultura universale in termini di arte, musica, letteratura, maanche su quello che l’Italia continua a dare ora anche nei settori più avanzati ed innovatividella ricerca scientifica e tecnologica, settori per i quali siamo ammirati negli Stati Uniti e alivello internazionale.Come non ricordare gli oltre 700 accordi di ricerca fra università americane editaliane, con scambi di ricercatori e di risultati che contribuiscono quotidianamente al progressodella conoscenza e del benessere globali? Come non pensare alle decine di migliaiadi studenti italiani che studiano in America, o americani che studiano in Italia?Per non parlare poi delle relazioni economiche e commerciali fra i nostri due Paesi, increscente sviluppo, così come i contatti fra i nostri due popoli, grazie anche a flussi turisticisempre più significativi.La salda amicizia fra l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti si fonda anche sul comune rispetto peri valori di libertà e dignità umana che i soldati italiani ed americani difendono insieme inalcuni fra i più importanti teatri internazionali. L’Italia e gli Stati Uniti hanno una comunevisione delle relazioni internazionali e condividono l’impegno a favore della pace edella stabilità nel mondo.Non posso non concludere sottolineando l’importanza di tenere vivo il comuneretaggio italiano, soprattutto attraverso la promozione dell’insegnamento della lingua italiana,anche a livello AP. A relationship that is based, amongmany things, on the presence of over 25 million Americansof Italian origin and more than 200,000 Italian citizens whohave made the United States their home.I do not need to emphasize Italy’s extraordinarycontribution to the growth and development of the UnitedStates, the sacrifices and the exceptional outcome that thiscontribution has produced.The celebration of 2013 the Year of Italian Culturein the United States, with more than 200 events in over 50cities, provides us with the opportunity to reflect on thecontribution of our great country to culture as a whole, interms of art, music, literature, but also on what Italy continuesto give even now in the most advanced and innovativeareas of scientific research and technology and whichhave drawn great admiration from the United States andthe global community.How can we forget the 700 plus research agreementsbetween Italian and American Universities, whichencourage the exchange of researchers and produce resultsthat contribute daily to the advancement of knowledgeand overall wellbeing? How can we not think of the tensof thousands of Italian students studying in America orAmericans studying in Italy?Not to mention the economic and trade relationsbetween our two countries, which are constantly growing,as well as the contacts between our two peoples, also thanksto the flow of tourism which has become more and moresignificant.The solid friendship between Italy and the UnitedStates is also based on the common respect for the valuesof freedom and human dignity that Italian and Americansoldiers defend together in some of the most importantinternational theaters. Italy and the United States have acommon vision of international relations and a commoncommitment to peace and stability in the world.I cannot conclude without stressing the importanceof keeping our common cultural heritage alive, especiallyby promoting the teaching of the Italian language, includingat the AP level. We must not forget the goal of enrolling2,500 students in 2015, an objective that we must worktoward together.It is for this reason that I wish to thank all of thosewho, with their daily commitment, contribute to the disseminationof our beautiful language: schools, teachers,associations, and our government sponsored Enti Gestori.Aware of the immense contribution of Italians livingin the United States and of Americans of Italian descent, Iwould therefore like to extend my sincerest "Grazie!"
