Artisanal Chocolate
The Cioccolato di Modica is an Italian P.A.T.
specialty chocolate, typical of the municipality of
Modica in Sicily, characterized by an ancient and
original recipe that gives the chocolate a peculiar
grainy texture and aromatic flavor. The specialty,
inspired by the Aztec original recipe for Xocoatl, was
introduced in the County of Modica by the
Spaniards, during their domination in the
southern Italy. Currently there are traces of this
type of work in Spain ("el chocolate a la piedra"), as
well as the indigenous communities in Mexico and
Guatemala. Historically it has been handed down
as a typical cake of the noble families during the
holidays and important occasions to prepare it at
home. In this way it was handed down to the present
day, and only later became a confectionery product
of international renown.
