A Bergamo la magia si ripete e l’antica Città Alta si risveglia (dal 7 al 22 settembre) 

con un’inedita Piazza Vecchia immersa tra fiori, acqua, piante e turisti che ne colorano 

le vie e i più suggestivi palazzi storici. Dopo il successo delle prime due edizioni con 

oltre 200.000 visitatori, è un piacere dare il Bentornato a “I Maestri del Paesaggio 

-International Meeting of the Landscape and Garden-” con un programma denso di 

appuntamenti e le più autorevoli firme del Paesaggio in arrivo da tutto il mondo per 

una manifestazione del settore tra le più significative al mondo.

A Bergamo la magia si ripete! 

L’antica Città Alta si risveglia dal 7 al 22 settembre con un’inedita Piazza Vecchia 

immersa tra fiori, acqua, piante e turisti che ne colorano le vie e i più suggestivi 

palazzi storici. 

Dopo il successo delle prime due edizioni con oltre 200.000 visitatori, è un piacere 

dare il Bentornato a “I Maestri del Paesaggio - International Meeting of the 

Landscape and Garden”. 

Un programma densissimo: le più autorevoli star del paesaggio in arrivo da tutto 

il mondo per conferire alla manifestazione un ruolo sempre più crescente nella 

leadership delle rassegne internazionali dedicate ai giardini e al paesaggio. 

Un vero e proprio summit sulla progettazione green ci attende… e un sogno ambizioso 

ci proietta già nei prossimi anni a venire: quella di portare questa manifestazione nata 

dalla passione di un gruppo di amici, a punto di riferimento fisso e riconosciuto 

a livello mondiale, sulla falsariga della Biennale d’Arte per Venezia e del Salone 

del Mobile di Milano. Sognamo per Bergamo nei prossimi anni, una città piena 

di piazze Verdi e straripante di eventi collaterali inventati da chi avrà a cuore le 

tematiche della qualità del paesaggio e della vita…

From 7 to 22 September, Città Alta will awaken to a Piazza Vecchia full of flowers, 

water, plants and tourists who will fill their streets and historic buildings. 

Following the success of previous editions and over 200,000 visitors, it is our pleasure 

to welcome you back to ““I Maestri del Paesaggio - International Meeting of the 

Landscape and Garden”. 

A full programme of events. International landscape personalities are arriving to further 

enhance our event and help it place itself among the most important in the area of gardens 

and the landscape. 

A summit on green design awaits us…and an ambitious dream for years to come which 

will be a regular event hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Biennale d’Arte in Venice and 

Salone del Mobile in Milan. It is our wish that in the future Bergamo will be a city full of 

“Green Squares” and similar events with at their heart, themes of the landscape and of life…

EDITORIALE 

Come descrivere I Maestri del Paesaggio? 

Innanzitutto partendo dalla passione. Quella che ha mosso un gruppo di amici a 

riunirsi nell’associazione no profit Arketipos con l’obiettivo di condividere con la 

propria città un ideale: promuovere e diffondere la qualità del paesaggio. Un gruppo, 

ma anche una famiglia, sempre più numerosa di anno in anno, che in partnership 

con le istituzioni - in primis il Comune di Bergamo - con l’appassionato sostegno 

dell’assessore all’Ambiente Massimo Bandera affiancato dall’assessore alla Cultura 

Claudia Sartirani, assieme uniti nell’ambizioso progetto di candidare Bergamo a 

Capitale Europea della Cultura nel 2019. 

Dalla parola paesaggio-urbano emerge già il cuore di una Manifestazione tra le più 

significative al mondo sul tema di Landscape, Garden e Valorizzazione del Territorio. 

Argomenti al centro del dibattito nazionale e internazionale, che risvegliano la necessità 

di incrementare la sensibilità e la qualità della progettazione green in città. 

La scelta della location per una manifestazione dedicata al paesaggio non poteva 

che cadere su Bergamo: dove trovare un’altra città con uno straordinario centro 

monumentale situato nel bel mezzo di un’area verde tutelata da 4.700 ettari? Dove 

trovare un altro luogo di tale fascino, dove Natura, Architettura, Arte e Storia si 

fondono in un’unica parola: Paesaggio. Questa manifestazione internazionale non è 

solo una dimostrazione d’amore verso Bergamo e il nostro Paese. Soprattutto vuole 

essere un inno senza bandiere alla qualità della vita e ai temi ambientali, una speranza 

per una progettazione consapevole dove architettura e paesaggio lavorano all’unisono. 

A sostegno di ciò, quest’anno gli appuntamenti sono tanti, e per questo conviene 

prender nota e non lasciarseli scappare. Partiamo dal cuore della manifestazione, il 

Meeting al Teatro Sociale, dove il 14-15 settembre le più grandi star internazionali 

del paesaggio si confronteranno, facendoci viaggiare da New York (con la straordinario 

parco dell’High Line realizzato su un’ex ferrovia sopraelevata dismessa), alla Gran 

Bretagna nel giardino reale dei Windsor, ai relais ambientati in contesti sensibili, ai 

masterplan per New Orleans e per i giochi olimpici di Londra. Per un confronto diretto 

con l’eccellenza del Paesaggio, da non perdere sono i Seminari (11-12 settembre) e i 

Workshop (13 settembre), e gli Aperitivi di paesaggio una novità di questa terza 

edizione ospitati nei locali storici della ristorazione di Città Alta. E come contorno, 

Eventi culturali ed enogastronomici, Mostre, Concorsi. Infine, a cornice di queste 

due settimane di fermento creativo, l’immancabile Piazza Verde in Piazza Vecchia, 

quest’anno ispirata al paesaggio di pianura.

How to describe I Maestri del Paesaggio? 

First of all, passion. That which motivated the founding of the non-profit association 

Arketipos with the objective to share an idea with its city and promote and share the 

landscape. An association which has grown over the years in partnership with various 

institutions, most importantly Bergamo Town Council with the support of Councillor 

Massimo Bandera (Environment) together with Councillor Claudia Sartirani 

(Culture), working together on a project to promote Bergamo as a candidate for the 

European Capital of Culture in 2019. 

From the expression urban-landscape one may understand the idea behind this event which 

holds its place amongst the most important national and International landscaping events 

discussing topics at the heart of both National and International debates which emphasise 

the necessity to educate and change the approach to green design in our cities. 

Bergamo was the perfect choice for this event where there is not just one but two cities, one 

with an incredible historical centre surrounded by 4,700 hectares of green space. Where else 

might one fine a similar location, where Nature, Architecture, Art and History are merged 

in a single word: the Landscape. This international event is not just held in appreciation 

of Bergamo and Italy but above all to represent environmental themes and quality of life 

hoping to motivate others to undertake their projects while considering both architecture 

and the environment. 

This year, there are many events not to be missed. First of all there is the Meeting at the 

Teatro Sociale where from 14-15 September some of the biggest International landscape 

design personalities will come together bringing projects from New York (the extraordinary 

High Line park built on a former elevated railway line), Great Britain and the Windsor 

Royal Garden, luxury hotels which respect environmental values and masterplans for 

projects in New Orleans and at the London Olympics. Should you wish to work directly 

with some of these personalities, don’t miss the Seminars (11-12 September) and Workshops 

(13 September), not to forget the Landscape Aperitifs - a new addition this year. Other 

events include cultural and food&wine events, exhibitions and competitions. At the centre 

of these two weeks, don’t forget to visit the Green Square, Piazza Verde in Piazza Vecchia, 

inspired this year by the Plain of Lombardy.

landscape. On occasion, as seen in the cultivated hills of Bergamo, itself an extraordinary

collaboration with a number of Città Alta’s restaurants and with the important contribution of 

the newspaper group Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso, is proud to invite you to try the winning 

“flagship recipe”, winner of the recipe competition “Green food e gli Chef del paesaggio”. Come 

and try the Mini cakes with potato, peas and fava beans by Ada Parisi which is going to be 

offered as a complimentary entrée in all partnering restaurants (members of Le Tavole di 

Bergamo Alta) during the 16 day event and at the Serata di Gala on 14 September.

Lucia Nusiner. Progetto paesaggistico 

Laureata in scienze agrarie presso l’Università di Milano nel 1993, 

ha frequentato il Master di “Progettazione e realizzazione di parchi 

e giardini” presso la Fondazione Minoprio (Co) nel 1996-97 e alcuni 

convegni di Verbena e corsi di progettazione del verde organizzati 

dalla Scuola Agraria del Parco di Monza. Specializzata anche in 

Healing Gardens, si occupa da circa 20 anni nello Studio GPT di 

progettazione di giardini privati e pubblici e piscine naturali. 

Lucia Nusiner. Project coordinator 

Born in 1968. Graduate in Agricultural Science from Milan University (1993). She did a Masters in 

“Park and Garden design” at the Minoprio Foundation (Como) from 1996-97 and has participated 

at a number of Verbena conferences and courses in garden design held by the “Scuola Agraria del 

Parco di Monza”. At GPT she designs private gardens, natural swimming pools and public green 

areas and gives a number of courses in garden design, some for the School of Agriculture at Monza, 

Terza Università, libraries and public bodies. In 2013 she completed a post-graduate course at Milan 

Agricultural University titled “Healing Gardens: green design in care institutions”. 

Maurizio Quargnale. Progetto illuminotecnico 

La sua figura professionale è definita come consulente illuminotecnico. 

Lavora da anni con la luce, risolvendo problematiche e proponendo 

soluzioni attinenti. Per necessità di progetto, affronta spesso 

problematiche diverse da ciò che riguarda la pura illuminazione, 

toccando da vicino realtà come l’interior design o il landscape design. 

Passione, voglia di fare e credere in ciò che si fa sono gli ingredienti 

fondamentali per raggiungere risultati altrimenti impensabili. 

Maurizio Quargnale. Lighting designer 

Lighting designer. He collaborates with Studio GPT when lighting projects are required using 

high-quality technology which is either available on the market or “made to measure” for individual 

projects. Passion and belief in what he does are the fundamental elements to achieve the impossible.

IL PROGETTO 

A ispirare il tema della Piazza Verde di quest’anno è “Feel the Water” con l’acqua 

come elemento caratterizzante. Simbolo di vita per tutti i popoli, l’acqua è anche 

richiamo al paesaggio italiano con i suoi torrenti, fiumi, rogge e canali irrigui. 

Il richiamo è poi al paesaggio di pianura e al bosco in crescita, rappresentato dalle 

grandi aiuole con file di carpino -essenza tipica della pianura- di diverse dimensioni, 

dalla piccolissima piantina forestale all’albero maturo. A fare da fil rouge tra questi 

elementi è un sinuoso segno che si snoda nella Piazza richiamando le morbide anse 

dei fiumi di pianura. 

Il progetto, ideato in una logica di sostenibilità da Lucia Nusiner dello Studio GPT 

e illuminato da Maurizio Quargnale, prevede l’utilizzo di piante che richiedono 

bassi livelli di manutenzione e pochissima irrigazione.

THE PROJECT 

This year the designers were inspired by the plain of Lombardy and its characteristic 

waterways, the maze of canals and drainage channels which have for centuries served 

our lowlands and given life to typical Italian landscapes The second symbolic element is 

the growing wood, represented by hornbeam of different dimensions. These elements will 

be connected by a red thread, a bright red, winding pathway where children may play and 

chase one another. 

The sustainable project was overseen by Lucia Nusiner in collaboration with Studio 

GPT, lighting design by Maurizio Quargnale. Plants chosen require low watering and 

maintenance.

Passione ed entusiasmo sono le radici della Manifestazione. Passione per il territorio che 

abitiamo ed entusiasmo nel credere in città attente alla qualità della vita: paesaggi urbani 

che abbracciano la convivenza uomo-natura. Da questo spirito nasce l’International 

Meeting of the Landscape and Garden, oggi alla sua terza edizione, che abbiamo il piacere 

di condividere con la nostra città e con i più illustri paesaggisti del mondo. 

Perché Bergamo città-paesaggio? 

Abbracciata dai colli, custodisce il suo centro storico in altura con 4.700 ettari di 

verde: un panorama certamente unico, uno skyline monumentale avvolto dalle mura 

veneziane e orlato dagli ippocastani, una scenografia straordinaria, nella quale la 

Storia ha concretizzato in sintonia con la Natura, un vero esempio del significato della 

parola Paesaggio. Bergamo si conferma palcoscenico ideale per una manifestazione sul 

paesaggio, e non solo: il suo patrimonio culturale, l’intraprendenza e la creatività della sua 

gente, la rende candidata ideale per divenire Capitale Europea della Cultura nel 2019. 

The Origins of I Maestri del Paesaggio 

Passione ed entusiasmo sono le radici della Manifestazione. Passione per il territorio che 

abitiamo ed entusiasmo nel credere in città più verdi: paesaggi urbani che abbracciano 

la convivenza uomo-natura. Da questo spirito nasce l’International Meeting of the 

Landscape and Garden, oggi alla sua terza edizione, che abbiamo il piacere di condividere 

con la nostra città e con i più illustri paesaggisti del mondo. 

Why Bergamo city-landscape? 

Surrounded by hills, its historical centre is surrounded by 4,700 hectares of “green”. A 

unique panorama and monumental skyline with its Venetian wall and horse chestnut 

trees, a wonderful panorama which over time has become part of and a true example of 

Landscape. Bergamo is the ideal location for such an event, but that’s not all. Thanks to the 

culture, initiative and creativity of its people, it’s also an ideal candidate for the European 

Capital of Culture in 2019.

FEEL THE WATER 

“Feel the Water”: focus dell’edizione 2013 

Inserendosi appieno nel dibattito avviato con l’Esposizione Internazionale di Saragozza 

del 2008 (acqua e sviluppo sostenibile) e che proseguirà con l’Esposizione Universale 

del 2015 di Milano (nutrire il pianeta), quest’anno gli eventi de I Maestri del Paesaggio 

saranno ispirati all’acqua con il tema “Feel the Water”. Acqua come elemento naturale, 

fonte di vita, di rigenerazione e di bellezza, e al contempo acqua come elemento 

progettuale. Tema vasto che va dall’ideazione più innovativa dei paesaggi urbani alla 

fitta rete di canali e fossi che da secoli, incorniciando le pianure, rendono feconde le 

terre dando vita al territorio agrario italiano. Il tema dell’acqua, insieme a quello del 

bosco, ha ispirato anche la progettazione della Piazza Verde per vivere lo stupore di 

vivere la natura in città tra valori architettonici e storici di altissima qualità.

Joining the debate started in 2008 at Saragozza (water and sustainable development) 

to be followed by the Universal Expo in 2015 in Milan (nourish the planet), this year I 

Maestri del Paesaggio has been inspired by the water and has as its focus “Feel the Water”. 

Water as a natural element and at the same time a design tool, a huge area of interest which 

we observe in areas from the creation of the most innovative Urban Landscapes to the 

maze of canals and drainage channels which have for centuries served our lowlands and 

given life to agricultural landscapes. This year the designers were inspired by the plain of 

Lombardy and its characteristic waterways, bringing nature to the city to co-exist with 

architecture and history.

Arketipos è l’ideatrice de “I Maestri del Paesaggio - International Meeting 

of the Landscape and Garden”, manifestazione internazionale organizzata in 

collaborazione con il Comune di Bergamo. 

L’associazione, senza fini di lucro, lavora per promuovere la cultura del paesaggio naturale 

e antropizzato con l’obiettivo di favorire uno sviluppo sostenibile e la valorizzazione 

delle potenzialità di ogni territorio attraverso un coinvolgimento pluridisciplinare: 

dall’architettura del paesaggio alla tutela ambientale, dalla creatività e dall’arte alla 

formazione di professionisti e cittadini con convegni, seminari, corsi e dibattiti.

Sophie Agata Ambroise con la sua Officina del Paesaggio propone 

riflessioni e creazioni dalla piccola alla grande scala, pur mantenendo 

sempre un’indole di tipo artigianale. Tra i progetti per Resorts di lusso 

in Italia, Francia, Asia, spicca la suggestiva oasi verde del Luxury Hotel 

Bulgari di Milano. In ambito pubblico è nota per la riqualifica della foce 

del fiume Cassarate sul lago di Lugano e per il progetto degli orti collettivi 

a Chiasso, il tutto in un unico respiro: dal giardino, al paesaggio, al territorio. 

Sophie Agata Ambroise has a degree in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan and 

did post-graduate studies in landscape architecture at the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure” in Versailles. 

She has been freelance since 2000, running her Landscape “Workshop” - Officina del Paesaggio - in 

a way that allows her to work on both small and large scales while at the same time maintaining 

attention to detail. Projects for luxury resorts have brought her work to Italy, France and Asia and 

both local and social events have led her to be involved in many different types of project, varying 

from the damming of the Cassarate river in Lugano to community vegetable gardens in Chiasso but 

always considering the garden, the landscape and territory. 

Marco Bay, architetto paesaggista, spazia di scala dal giardino pensile

capogruppo finalista e il Concorso ‘Cascina Merlata’ 1° classificato 

ex-aequo e il primo premio Parco Isola Carolina di Lodi. 

Marco Bay, landscape architect, graduated from Milan Polytechnic having written his thesis 

on the gardens of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe and began to collaborate with Nena Balsari in Milan. He 

opened his own studio in 1997 and began to work on projects of all scales, from roof gardens to 

landscape remediation. Among his most important projects are: landscaping for a wine-producer

most recent projects is the landscape masterplan for the Capo Malfatano Resort (Sardinia) and

Merlata” competition and won first prize for the Parco Isola Carolina di Lodi. 

Christopher Bradley-Hole, uno dei più innovativi designer del 

paesaggio. I suoi progetti hanno influenzato molto le tendenze di 

design contemporaneo. Laureato in architettura, la sua passione per 

le piante e per il paesaggio lo conduce a dedicarsi alla progettazione 

dei giardini e del paesaggio urbano. Una serie di giardini al Chelsea 

Flower Show gli hanno sfruttato tante commissioni, sia per giardini 

privati che per progetti pubblici. Ha lavorato per clienti come la

Attualemente sta elaborando un progetto innovativo e sensibile di un paesaggio storico 

vicino Henley sul Tamigi per il premiato costruttore immobiliare Spink Property. 

Christopher è inoltre un autore di successo, avendo scritto 2 libri “The minimalist garden” 

e “Making the Modern Garden”. Ha esposto I suoi lavori e la sua filosofia progettuale 

in tutto il mondo: USA, Australia, Germania, Svezia, Russia e Cina e ha lavorato come

Christopher Bradley-Hole, is one of the world’s foremost landscape designers. His projects have

Winning Sainsbury Laboratory in the Cambridge Botanic Garden. Currently he is developing 

an innovative and sensitive design for the award-winning property developer, Spink Property, 

for an historic landscape near Henley on Thames. Christopher is the bestselling author of two books, 

the minimalist garden and Making the Modern Garden. He has lectured extensively on his work 

across the USA, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Russia and China and has taught landscape design 

and construction to students on the Diploma Course at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.

Anna Letizia Monti. Agronomo, Dottore di Ricerca in Studio 

e Progettazione del Paesaggio, lavora come libero professionista, 

privilegiando gli incarichi progettuali in gruppi multidisciplinari. E’ 

Presidente Nazionale AIAPP dal 2012, dopo aver ricoperto la carica 

di Vicepresidente dal 2009 al 2012. AIAPP - Associazione Italiana 

di Architettura del Paesaggio - è stata fondata nel 1950 e riunisce 

professionisti e cultori impegnati a tutelare, conservare e migliorare la 

qualità paesaggistica del nostro Paese, attraverso la formazione e le attività scientifico-culturali 

di informazione, aggiornamento professionale e ricerca nel campo del paesaggio. Conta oltre 

700 iscritti, di cui circa 600 Soci, ammessi secondo norme europee. AIAPP è membro di 

IFLA – International Federation of Landscape Architetcts, e si è aggiudicata l’organizzazione 

del Congresso Mondiale IFLA in Italia nella primavera del 2016. 

Anna Letizia Monti, Agronomist and research fellow in the Study and Design of the Landscape. 

Anna Letizia Monti works freelance on a vast range of projects.She has been President of AIAPP 

since 2012, having previously held the role of Vice-President from 2009 - 2012. AIAPP - The Italian 

Association of Landscape Architecture - was founded in 1950 and brings together professionals and 

enthusiasts who strive to protect, conserve and improve the quality of Italian landscapes through 

education and scientific-cultural intiatives, ongoing training of professionals and landscape research. 

It boasts 700 members, of whom 600 are associates, carefully selected following European guidelines. 

Piet Oudolf, tra i più geniali ed innovativi paesaggisti 

contemporanei, è considerato un monumento vivente nella 

progettazione green. Creatore di una vera e propria rivoluzione del 

verde, ha portato in città le “erbacce”: grazie a lui la bellezza del 

giardino non si basa più solo sulla raffinatezza di rose e peonie, 

ma sulle graminacee, le spighe, i papaveri. Secondo tale visione, 

per esempio, in Italia ha creato il “Giardino delle Vergini” per la 

Biennale di Venezia nel 2010-2011-2012. Ha vinto la Medaglia d’Oro e Best in Show 

Award al Chelsea Flower Show nel 2000 con Arne Maynard e il “Gold Veitch Memorial 

medal” nel 2002 quale riconoscimento per i servizi resi nell’avanzamento delle scienze e 

dell’orticoltura. Tra I suoi libri “Designing with plants”, “Planting Design ‘Planting in 

Time and Space’”, “Designing with Grasses” e “Dreamplants for the Natural Garden”. 

Tra le sue più note composizioni paesaggistiche sono l’Hortus conclusus all’interno del 

Serpentine Pavillon del 2011 (opera di Peter Zunthor) in Hyde Park, la sistemazione a

Renfro e James Corner Field Operations), e il giardino pensile Lurie Garden, a copertura

Piet Oudolf, was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands and is recognised as one of the most 

innovative contemporary landscape architects. He started his landscape and garden design 

practice in 1976 in Haarlem, and moved to Hummelo in the eastern part of the Netherlands 

in 1982 which became well known for the more radical ideas shown in planting design. He has 

worked in Europe, Canada and the United States on both public and private projects. In Italy 

he created the “Giardino delle Vergini” for the Architectural Venice Biennale in 2010-2011- 

2012. He has also won many awards, among them a Gold Medal and ’Best in Show’ in 2000 at 

the Chelsea Flower Show for a garden designed with Arne Maynard, commissioned by Gardens 

Illustrated and The Gold Veitch Memorial medal in 2002 awarded by the Royal Horticultural 

Society in recognition of services given in the advancement of science and practice of horticulture. 

His publications include: “Designing with plants”, “Planting Design ‘Planting in Time and 

Space’”, “Designing with Grasses” and “Dreamplants for the Natural Garden”. 

Silvano Petrosino. È studioso di filosofia contemporanea, 

internazionalmente noto per i suoi studi sul pensiero francese 

del dopoguerra e in particolare sull’opera dei due filosofi francesi 

Lévinas e Derrida. Oggetto dei suoi studi sono i legami tra la 

struttura della razionalità e la dimensione morale dell’agire umano, 

l’indagine relativa alla struttura dell’esperienza e al rapporto tra la 

parola e l’immagine, i temi del luogo e dell’abitare. E’ titolare della 

cattedra di Teorie della comunicazione presso l’Università Cattolica di Milano e insegna 

Filosofia morale presso l’Università Cattolica di Piacenza. 

Silvano Petrosino,was born in Milan. A scholar of contemporary philosophy, he has primarily 

focused on French post-war thinking, particularly on the writings of E. Lévinas and J. Derrida 

and is internationally renowned for his studies on their works. He has translated many of these 

into Italian and has written monographs on both philosophers which have also been published in 

French. His area of specialisation is the connection between rationality and morality in human 

behaviour, with particular on the relationship between words and appearance, human ethos. 

Among others, he lectures in the theory of communication at the Catholic University of Milan, 

and Moral Philosophy at the Catholic University in Piacenza.

Tom Stuart-Smith. Autore del nuovo giardino del Windsor Castle 

realizzato in occasione dei festeggiamenti per il cinquantesimo anno 

di regno della Regina Elizabeth, è ben noto per le sue elaborazioni 

di grandi giardini privati nella campagna inglese. I suoi progetti 

infondono un’idea di giardino come luogo di emozioni e idee, dove il 

ruolo del progettista è allestire una scena senza l’imposizione di una 

narrativa rigida o di una forzata visione. Obiettivo è creare luoghi con 

possibilità infinite di immaginazione. Tra le sue opere spiccano “Landscape Masterplan” per 

la zona di Trentham e il recupero del giardino all’italiana più grande in Inghilterra. Ha vinto 

8 medaglie d’oro e 3 Best in Show Award al RHS Chelsea Flower Show. 

Tom Stuart-Smith, read Zoology at Cambridge before completing a post graduate degree in 

Landscape Design at Manchester University. He set up his own practice in 1998. Projects 

include a number of large private gardens in the English countryside, including a new garden 

at Windsor Castle commissioned by the Royal Household to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. 

He was responsible for the Landscape Masterplan for Trentham and the recasting of the Italian 

garden there, the largest formal garden in England. He has designed eight Gold Medal winning 

gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show. Including three awarded best in show. His work expresses 

the idea of the garden as a place that quietly articulates emotions and ideas, believing that the 

designer’s role is to set the scene without imposing a rigid narrative and that a garden should not 

bind us to a narrow vision. Rather the aim is to make places of imaginative possibility. 

Heinrich Hinnerk Wehberg, fonda nel 1969 la Arge 

Wehberg, Lange, Gründigger e Earth-werker (dal 2012 “WES 

LandschaftsArchitektur”). Numerosi i premi e riconoscimenti. 

Nel 1969 vince il primo appalto pubblico per la realizzazione della 

famosa fontana del pifferaio magico e della piazza di Hameln, e da 

allora numerosissimi i primi premi in competizioni internazionali, 

tra i quali spiccano le vittorie per concorsi per Leipzig, Potsdam, 

Shenyang, Shanghai, Salzburg, Hildesheim, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Peking, ecc.. 

È stato Visiting Lecturer al Hornsey College of Fine Art di Londra e Host Professor di 

arte e architettura presso il HfBK di Brema e professore di progettazione del paesaggio 

presso l’Università Tecnica di Braunschweig. 

Heinrich Hinnerk Wehberg, studied Art at HfBK Hamburg. He has been visiting lecturer at 

Hornsey College of Fine Art in London and Host Professor of Art and Architecture at HfBK Bremen. 

He has been professor of Landscape Design at Braunschweig Institute of Technology since 1982 and 

has worked in both Germany and the United Kingdom, designing both private and public projects, 

including bas-relief walls, rotating sphere fountains and the renovation of schools, universities and 

sacred buildings. In 1969 he founded Arge Wehberg, Lange, Gründigger e Earth-werker (called 

WES LandschaftsArchitektur since 2012) where he now is advisor and representative. His work has 

received many awards and in 1969 he won his first public tender for the creation of the fountain of 

the Pied Piper at Hamelin, while in 1996, for the new trade fair area in Leipzig.

John Brookes. Autore di più di 1000 giardini in 50 anni di

John Brookes has designed and built well over 1000 gardens during a career spanning 50 years. 

He is as active as ever and runs an extremely busy design practice, creating gardens large and small, 

all over the UK and abroad. He is best known for his ability to create gardens that relate to their 

environment, designing gardens that fit into the wider landscape; that best suit the style and period 

of the house and the functional and stylistic aspirations of his clients. He has won numerous awards 

throughout his career including 4 Gold medals at Chelsea. Widely regarded within the garden 

design world as an innovative and inspirational designer and plantsman, he is regularly quoted 

as a source of inspiration in the media. He is also a successful and prolific author, having written 

24 best selling books, and countless articles for newspapers and magazines. He lectures on garden 

design in UK and overseas and runs a design school in Argentina. 

Gabriele Kiefer fonda lo studio Büro Kiefer a Kreuzberg (1989) 

riorganizzandolo nel 2011 con il nome KieferCS (con i partners 

Tancredi Capatti e Matthias Staubach) Dopo gli studi di architettura 

del paesaggio all’Università di Berlino, inizia la carriera universitaria

Gabriele Kiefer, studied landscape architecture at the TU Berlin and worked there as an 

academic assistant from 1987 to 1992. In 1989 she founded Büro Kiefer in Kreuzberg, Berlin; 

2011 reorganised as KieferCS (partner: Tancredi Capatti, Matthias Staubach). Kiefer has been 

successful in many competitions for the conversion of large areas and urban squares. Lecturing 

jobs and exhibitions have taken Kiefer to locations including San Fransisco, Boston, Santiago 

de Chile, Montreal, Shenzhen, Paris and Milan. In 2002 Gabriele G. Kiefer was appointed to 

a Professorship for Landscape Architecture at the University of Braunschweig and since 2011 

she has taught regularly at the Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia. 

Marco Pozzoli architetto paesaggista e agronomo, socio A.I.A.P.P. 

ed IFLA, vive e lavora a Firenze. Progettista di livello internazionale 

è stato fondatore e direttore della Scuola Europea di Architettura 

del Giardino e del Paesaggio di Villa Montalto ed attualmente è 

Docente all’Università di Genova, Firenze, Perugia. Tra i concorsi 

vinti spiccano il concorso per la sistemazione a verde della nuova 

sede Università di Salerno (1988), l’appalto Concorso per la 

sistemazione della fascia di rispetto perimetrale del Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali 

dì Capua (1994), il concorso internazionale di idee per la valorizzazione fronte mare del 

comune di Rapallo e il concorso internazionale per il nuovo ospedale di Bergamo presente 

in qualità di progettista del paesaggio per la sistemazione e l’inserimento ambientale del 

polo ospedaliero, nel 2002. 

Marco Pozzoli, lives and works in Florence, graduate of Landscape Architecture and Agricultural 

Sciences, Registered Architect, A.I.A.P.P. and IFLA member. International designer, founder and 

director of the European School of Garden and Landscape Architecture at Villa Montalto. Interregional 

Head (Toscana, Umbra, Emilia Romagna) of the Italian Association of Landscape 

Architects in 1984-86. Presently Professor of “Landscape Design: Methods and Techniques” 

at Graduate School of Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Territory Department of 

Architecture, University of Genova and in Design Methods and Techniques of Green Areas at 

the Post Graduate Master School of Garden Architecture, Project and Septembering of landscape 

at the Faculty of Architecture - University of Florence, among other posts. Works for both private 

and public clients – company headquarters, public administration etc. In 2006 he won First 

Prize in the International Competition for development of the water front Rapallo (Liguria). 

In 2002 he was awarded First Prize in the International Landscaping Competition for the 

new hospital in Bergamo - environmental inclusion of the Main Hospital.

Arend Jan Van der Horst, studied Education for Tree Nurseries and took a Higher Diploma 

in Garden & Landscape Architecture in 1968, followed by work experience at the Potager 

Versailles and the Buro Mien Ruys in Amsterdam. In 1986 he opened his own studio “ 

Tuinarchitektenburo Arend Jan vd Horst” and in 1988 the Gallery De Prinsenkamer in 

Amsterdam. Van der Horst has had offices in Amsterdam, Baarsdorp, Antwerp and Deauville/ 

Trouville Normandy (2001 – present). In 2006 he moved his Baarsdorp studio to Middelburg. 

He has written 32 books, the first titled ‘Een tuin van jezelf ’ in 1979. Other titles include

Clive Nichols, is an English photographer who has established a reputation as one of the world’s 

finest flower and garden photographers. His passion for the subject comes across in every image 

that he makes. His work has appeared in hundreds of books as well as in countless magazines, 

calendars and brochures. Over the past 25 years he has amassed a stunning collection of over 

60,000 images. He is one of the judges for the prestigious ‘International Garden Photographer 

of the Year’ competition and he regularly gives master classes in flower and garden photography 

for the Royal Horticultural Society in England. His latest book ‘Land Art in the Mediterranean’ 

showcases gardens and landscapes in Spain, Morocco, France, Italy and Greece and was published 

by fine art publisher Thames & Hudson.

Per chi ancora non la conoscesse e per chi già l’ha nel cuore, Piazza Vecchia in 

Bergamo è una sorpresa per gli occhi. Una squisita combinazione di stili storici che 

diventa ancor più magica quando nella nota Fontana Contarini si vedono galleggiare 

ninfee, con bambini che cavalcano le sfingi e i leoni di marmo. Una Piazza, ma 

anche un salotto all’aria aperta e un bosco nel cuore cittadino: tutto questo è Piazza 

Vecchia per i 16 giorni (7-22 settembre) che ruotano attorno a “I Maestri del 

Paesaggio - International Meeting of the Landscape and Garden” e che quest’anno 

diventa anche giardino della nuova Ambasciata Culturale Europea a sostegno della 

candidatura di Bergamo Capitale Europea della Cultura 2019.

even more magical when the Contarini Fountain is filled with water lilys and covered

Green food e gli Chef del paesaggio 

Mini cakes di piselli, fave e patate 

è la ricetta selezionata come patrimonio della manifestazione I Maestri del Paesaggio 2013 in 

collaborazione con D Repubblica Gruppo Editoriale L’Espresso e i ristoratori di Città Alta. 

La ricetta verrà offerta come entrée in tutte Le tavole di Bergamo Alta nei 16 giorni della 

manifestazione dal 7 al 22 settembre e servita durante la Serata di Gala del 14 settembre alla 

quale puoi partecipare prenotando il tuo posto su arketipos.org 

Ricetta per per circa 20 finger food 

di Ada Parisi 

• 20 stampini in silicone per mini 

muffin (i miei hanno un diametro di 

circa 5 centimetri) 

• 3 uova 

• 100 millilitri di panna liquida fresca 

• 30 grammi di pecorino stagionato 

Dop grattugiato 

• 30 grammi di Parmigiano Reggiano 

Dop grattugiato 

• 500 grammi di patate 

• 200 grammi di piselli già sgranati 

• 250 grammi di fave già sgranate 

• sale e pepe quanto basta 

• un pizzico di paprika dolce 

• olio extra vergine di oliva quanto basta 

• mezza cipolla bianca 

• una manciata di prezzemolo tritato 

Preriscaldare il forno ventilato a 200 gradi. Tritare sottilmente la cipolla. Sbucciare le 

patate e tagliarle a fettine sottili con un coltello o con la mandolina. Mettere un filo di 

olio in una padella e unire la cipolla: farla soffriggere e, quando sarà appassita, aggiungere 

le patate. Salare e pepare e fare cuocere coperto, unendo via via poca acqua calda se 

necessario, per 5 minuti. Alzare il fuoco e aggiungere la paprika dolce, i piselli e le fave e 

fare cuocere il tutto, ancora coperto, per circa 15 minuti. 

In una ciotola sbattere le uova con la panna, il parmigiano, il prezzemolo e il pecorino. 

Unire le verdure e mescolare bene. Mettere il composto nei pirottini di silicone e infornare 

per 10 minuti, finché il tortino non sarà gonfio e dorato. Fare raffreddare un minuto o 

due, sformare e servire. Se vi piace, potete accompagnare i tortini finger food con qualche 

goccia di aceto balsamico stravecchio.

Alta restaurateurs. The recipe will be offered as an entrée in all Le Tavole di Bergamo Alta 

(Arketipos partnering restaurants) during the 16-day event from 7-22 September, and will

Makes about 20 finger food: 

• 20 silicone moulds for mini muffins 

(about 5 cm) or paper cases. 

• 3 eggs 

• 10 ml fresh cream 

• 30 grams of grated pecorino cheese 

• 30 grams grated Parmesan 

• 500 grams of potatoes 

• 200 grams of shelled peas 

• 250 grams of fava beans 

• salt and pepper to taste 

• a pinch of sweet paprika 

• extra vergin olive oil 

• white onion 

• a handful of chopped parsley 

Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Chop the onion thinly. Peel the potatoes and cut into thin slices with 

a knife or with a mandolin. Put a little oil in a pan and add the onion, sauté and, when it is 

golden, add potatoes. Add salt and pepper and cook covered, adding a little hot water gradually 

if necessary, for 5 minutes. Turn up the heat and add the sweet paprika, peas and beans and cook 

everything, still covered, for about 15 minutes. 

In a bowl beat the eggs with the cream, parmesan, parsley and pecorino. Add the vegetables and 

mix well. Put the mixture into muffin cups and bake 10 minutes, until the pie will is golden. 

Allow to cool a minute or two, remove from the moulds and serve. If you like, you can accompany 

the cakes with a few drops of “stravecchio” balsamic vinegar

Piazza Verde” è la trasformazione del cuore di Città Alta (Piazza Vecchia) 

durante i giorni dell’evento. Il concorso è aperto a tutti. 

Following its success in 2012, the photographic competition “Obiettivo su Piazza
