Dopo il successo dell’edizione 2011 Bergamo si ripete!
Following the success of the 2011 edition, it’s happening again!
Nella splendida cornice della Città dei Mille, ritorna
la voglia di verde con “I Maestri del Paesaggio”,
una serie di eventi mirati al tema del paesaggio e del
giardino, della natura e del verde.
Un appuntamento che si colloca a pieno titolo tra
le più significative manifestazioni nazionali legate
alle tematiche del paesaggio, animato da meeting,
workshop, seminari e visite guidate.
Un evento che verrà quindi ripetuto nella sua finalità
principale ma con delle novità importanti che
amplieranno l’interesse ad un pubblico più vasto.
Meeting e Workshop nei luoghi più suggestivi di
Bergamo, vedranno la partecipazione di paesaggisti
di fama internazionale, che esporranno le proprie
esperienze, i progetti e la filosofia di lavoro a un
pubblico di professionisti o di semplici appassionati
provenienti da ogni parte del mondo. Unico filo
conduttore sarà il verde, inteso come convivialità e
connubio tra bellezza e benessere, tema di grande
attualità.
Per tutta la durata della manifestazione e fino a domenica
16 settembre, Piazza Vecchia verrà trasformata per
18 giorni in un affascinante e rigoglioso giardino
di piante e fiori, che cambieranno il volto di una delle
piazze più suggestive e antiche d’Italia, creando uno
scenario inedito e di grande effetto.
Set in the splendid Città dei Mille (“City of the
Thousand”), nature is back with the International Meeting
dedicated to landscaping experts and a series of
events to celebrate nature and all things green during
“I Maestri del Paesaggio”.
An event which holds its rightful place among the most
popular national and international Landscaping events
complete with Workshops, the Meeting and Guided
Tours, maintaining its original objectives but this time with
a fuller programme to appeal to a wider audience.
The Meeting and Workshops are to be held in the most
suggestive locations in Bergamo, where internationally
famous landscape architects, from both Italy and
abroad, present their projects, experiences and approach
to a public of experts, professionals and interested
individuals from far and wide with nature as the central
theme, bringing together beauty and wellbeing.
For the entire duration of the event until Sunday
September 16, Piazza Vecchia will once again
be decked in green and become a magical garden
for 18 days full of flowers and plants, dramatically
changing the face of Piazza Vecchia, one of the most
well-known and visited squares in Italy.

L’Associazione non ha fini di lucro e si propone di:
1. promuovere, diffondere e valorizzare la cultura
del paesaggio naturale e antropizzato al fine
di favorire uno sviluppo sostenibile e, nel
contempo, la valorizzazione delle potenzialità di
ogni territorio,attraverso il coinvolgimento delle
discipline dell’architettura del paesaggio, della
tutela ambientale e del verde, della creatività e
dell’arte e la formazione di professionisti e cittadini;
2. organizzare e realizzare convegni, seminari, corsi
ed incontri formativi;
3. promuovere borse di studio formative, corsi e
stages in Italia e all’estero;
4. promuovere la pubblicazione e diffusione di studi
ed aggiornamenti sui temi dell’ambiente e del
paesaggio (libri, riviste, siti web, ecc.);
5. promuovere ogni altra iniziativa finalizzata
alla qualificazione delle attività di architettura,
salvaguardia e valorizzazione del paesaggio e
dell’ambiente in Italia e all’estero;
6. collaborare con Enti, Università ed altre Istituzioni,
Associazioni e Società Scientifiche nazionali ed
internazionali;
7. collaborare con le aziende del settore per favorire
la ricerca applicata, con esclusione di iniziative a
mero carattere commerciale.
Arketipos is a non-profit association with the following aims:
1. to promote, inform and enhance both natural
landscapes and those modified by human
intervention thereby allowing sustainable development
and the individual evaluation of regions. This can
be achieved by bringing together the disciplines of
architecture, environmental protection, parks and
gardens, creativity, art and the education of both
professionals and citizens;
2. conferences, seminars, courses and training
meetings;
3. promotion of scholarships, courses and work
experience both in Italy and abroad;
4. publication and circulation of studies and publications
on the theme of the environment and landscape
(books, magazines, websites etc.);
5. all other activities aimed at the further education of
architects, protection of the landscape and of the
environment both in Italy and abroad;
6. collaboration with national and international
authorities, universities and other formative
institutions, associations and scientific groups;
7. participation with companies in the sector to further
the correct interpretation of findings with the exclusion
of those who operate for purely commercial gain.

Anche quest’anno l’Amministrazione Comunale ha
deciso di sostenere con forza questa importante
manifestazione che si sviluppa principalmente su due
fronti: il Meeting dei paesaggisti e Piazza Vecchia,
che tutti abbiamo vissuto come nostro giardino, ma
che dal programma si vede svilupparsi in diversi
appuntamenti che possono interessare a vari livelli:
dai paesaggisti professionisti ai giardinieri e ai nostri
cittadini appassionati o hobbisti.
È quindi soprattutto ai cittadini che chiedo di
partecipare come lo scorso anno, vivendo appieno
nella nostra Piazza Verde, che rispecchia la peculiarità
del nostro territorio. Bergamo non può essere
definita una “Città Giardino”, ma una città fatta da
tanti giardini; come tanti sono i giardini privati, che
compongono il verde di cui tutti godiamo; basti vedere
i giardini dei nostri colli, che creano un tutt’uno con
quel verde diffuso ancora naturale che li avvolge e crea
una stupefacente atmosfera.
Quindi proprio questa natura, questi colli di
Bergamo, spesso coltivati con i diversi colori degli
ortaggi, incorniciano quella che ora numerosi turisti
apprezzano: Città Alta, con le sue torri, le mura e i vicoli.
Inoltre, come non poter sottolineare che questo
meeting a livello internazionale porta alla ribalta quello
che probabilmente questo periodo di crisi globale ci
chiede: ritorno alla sostenibilità ambientale, a scelte
di vita “green”, alla qualità dei luoghi in cui viviamo,
ritorno alla tradizione, alla terra e ai suoi valori, così
come vuole essere il messaggio del progetto di
Piazza Vecchia…Verde.
Infine, anche la presenza di Slow Food ci fa pensare
alla sostenibilità ambientale e anche alimentare,
all’attenzione per la nostra tradizione tipicamente locale.
Penso che tutto ciò sia molto importante per i nostri
figli, per dare loro ancora speranza nel futuro.
Once again in 2012 we are proud to welcome the event
which has two main parts, the Meeting and Piazza
Vecchia, in which we all felt so at home last year. This
year, the programme has been enhanced, having many
different events with appeal for everyone - professional
landscape architects, interested locals or amateur
gardeners.
Therefore we once again ask the citizens of Bergamo
to participate once more as they did last year, enjoying
Piazza Vecchia to the full, a square which reflects the
peculiarities of the area. Bergamo cannot be called a
“Garden City”, but it is nonetheless a city full of gardens,
many of them private, which create the colours which we
all enjoy. One needs only to observe the gardens in the
hills around Bergamo and their many different shades of
green which merge together with astonishing effect.
It is this very landscape, these Bergamo hills, often sown
with crops of different colours which frame that which is
so much appreciated by visitors to the area - Città Alta
with its towers, the Venetian wall and narrow streets.
I must also draw attention to how this International
Meeting brings sustainability to the fore, perhaps
a reaction to the global crisis. We wish to promote
environmental sustainability and make “green” choices
for the places in which we live. A return to tradition, to
the earth and its fundamental values. This is also the
underlying message of Piazza Vecchia…nature.
To conclude, the presence of the Slow Food organisation
encourages one to think not only of environmental
sustainability but also that of food and attention to our
local traditions. It is not only important for us, but for our
children and their hopes for the future.

Anche quest’anno ci ritroviamo per questo importante
meeting, nel quale il centro dell’attenzione è il
paesaggista e il suo intervento nel territorio.
La crisi ci sta privando dei nostri sogni migliori, delle
nostre aspirazioni e per questo abbiamo voluto fare
uno sforzo per dare un segno di speranza decidendo
di andare controcorrente con un consistente aumento
dell’impegno economico, del numero degli eventi e
della loro durata. C’è la voglia di dimostrare che con
serietà, impegno e costanza si possono ancora fare
grandi manifestazioni.
Naturalmente per fare ciò è stato necessario l’aiuto
di tutti. I soci di Arketipos, il vicepresidente Renzo
Crescini, il tesoriere Paolo Bellini, il segretario Lucia
Nusiner e i consiglieri Mario Bonicelli, Maurizio
Quargnale, Vittorio Rodeschini e Daniele Simonelli con
i quali abbiamo condiviso con amicizia l’avventura
organizzativa. L’Amministrazione Comunale di
Bergamo che anche quest’anno ha stupito per il suo
sostegno pur nelle difficoltà di bilancio.

la Piazza Verde.
We have come together once again for this important
meeting during which landscape architects and their
impact on our surroundings takes centre stage.
The present economic crisis is corroding our hopes and
aspirations and for this very reason we have optimistically
decided to go against the tide by increasing the event
budget, the number of events on offer and their duration.
We hope to show that with a professional attitude,
commitment and consistency, great events are still
possible.
Of course, we couldn’t have done this alone. I wish to

Da giovedì 30 agosto a domenica 16 settembre 2012,
Piazza Vecchia verrà trasformata per 18 giorni nella

Fotografia dei Giardini, che raggruppa i lavori dei

Year competition (IGPOTY), il concorso fotografico più
importante del mondo nel settore delle piante e dei
giardini. Il concorso è aperto a qualsiasi fotografo in
qualsiasi parte del mondo e attira ogni anno più di 20.000
iscritti da circa 30 paesi.

Dalla Piazza Vecchia alla Piazza Verde
da giovedì 30 agosto a domenica 16 settembre
Per diciotto giorni Piazza Vecchia, la piazza storica di Bergamo
in Città Alta, una delle più belle d’Italia, dopo il successo della
scorsa edizione, torna a vestirsi di verde
e ad essere un giardino incantato.
Il progetto vuole quest’anno lasciare un messaggio forte,
un messaggio di sostenibilità: in questo periodo di crisi
globale, anche la scelta delle specie vegetali per giardini,
parchi e aiuole è da ponderare con cura.
Da un lato si vuole far conoscere essenze poco
note in Italia, erbe ornamentali e perenni rustiche
con bassi fabbisogni idrici e di manutenzione
che vestiranno di un verde sobrio e dall’aspetto
naturale l’intera piazza, dall’altro si porta alla
ribalta l’uso degli orti, simbolo del prendersi
cura della terra, aspetto ludico-educativo
per bambini e ragazzi, elemento bello,
utile e buono.
Il tutto in una cornice di cura dei dettagli per
suscitare al visitatore il desiderio di sostare in
una piazza che diventa orto-giardino.
La Piazza Verde come elemento di richiamo
per tutti, un segno tangibile di quello che
dentro il bellissimo Teatro Sociale e nelle
sale più belle di Bergamo Alta succede
con i migliori paesaggisti del mondo,
che racconteranno la loro professione di
disegnatori di giardini e paesaggi.

Green Square
From Piazza Vecchia to the Green Square
Thursday 30 August to Sunday 16 September
Following the success of 2011, Piazza Vecchia, one of the the most
well-known and visited squares in Bergamo and among
the most picturesque in Italy, will once again be decked in green
and become a magical garden for 18 days.
This year, the project wishes to communicate a strong message
of sustainability. Exacerbated by the global crisis, something
as basic as the choice of plants for gardens, parks and
flowerbeds is to be done with great care.
One of our objectives is to introduce lesser-known
plant species to Italy such as ornamental grasses
and rustic perennials which require little watering
and maintenance.
Another is to celebrate the orchard which has long
represented care for the earth along with serving
an educational purpose for children and teenagers.
Therefore our hope is to leave a message of
sustainability, not only regarding the environment
but also the food we eat.
The orchard looks to the traditional landscapes
of the hills of Bergamo where “one may observe
the wonderful geometry of tillage crops grazing
the soil, their dramatic colours adding to the
scene”. (prof. Lelio Pagani).
All this to tempt passers by to spend time in the
famous square which has become a garden, “the
Green Square”, a meeting point for all to highlight
the events which are happening in the woderful
Teatro Sociale and in some of the most attractive
locations in the Upper Town where internationally
famous landscape architects tell of their work and
experiences with gardens and the environment.

è il campo agricolo ornamentale di i.lab, il nuovo
Centro Ricerca e Innovazione del Gruppo Italcementi
progettato da Richard Meier. Concepito dallo studio
GPT - Giardini Paesaggio Territorio, nasce dal
desiderio di coniugare l’architettura di i.lab con la
cultura e la geografia del luogo: l’innovazione con la
tradizione autentica della terra bergamasca, che in
termini moderni diventa sostenibilità, biodiversità e
chilometro zero.
Il complesso sorge nel parco scientifico-tecnologico
Kilometro Rosso, lungo l’autostrada Milano-Venezia.
La serata di inaugurazione, ad invito, si aprirà con
un incontro di benvenuto e un breve racconto della
filosofia che inserisce coerentemente la scelta di
all’interno di i.lab. Seguirà una cena a buffet
con presidio Slow Food per assaporare, nella cornice
del nuovo , i sapori più antichi dell’agricoltura
bergamasca rivisitati in chiave contemporanea.

Project by GPT - Giardini Paesaggio Territorio,
was created from a desire to merge the architecture
of i.lab with local geography and culture, innovation
with authentic Bergamo tradition, which in modern
terms means sustainability, biodiversity and “kilometro
zero” (an Italian term coined to describe locally sourced,
low impact materials).
The complex is situated in the “Kilometro Rosso” Science
and Technology park along the Milan-Venice motorway.
The inauguration evening will begin with a welcoming
e reception and a short talk during which the philosophy
behind will be explained. To follow, a buffet
dinner/meal featuring Slow Food certified foods allowing
guests to taste, against the backdrop of ,
the oldest flavours of Bergamo agricultural produce
with a contemporary twist.

Cosa è?
L’International Garden Photographer of the Year è
un concorso fotografico internazionale giunto oggi
alla sua quinta edizione. Iniziato da un gruppo di
professionisti nella fotografia del giardino e del verde
nel 2007, è rapidamente cresciuta fino a diventare la
mostra numero uno al mondo di fotografia del giardino
e delle piante. Attira ogni anno più di 20.000 iscritti da
circa 30 paesi diversi, che concorrono divisi in sette
categorie più una sezione dedicata agli Under16.
Dice l’organizzatore Philip Smith:
“La fotografia dei giardini è un genere emergente. Utilizzando un
giardino come studio all’aperto, tutti i fotografi, di ogni età e ad
ogni livello di abilità possono sviluppare la loro vocazione artistica.
Fotografare giardini comprende molti aspetti di imagemaking:
possono essere minipaesaggi o esempi di fauna selvatica - o fiori
che nell’obiettivo diventano le nostre stelle hollywoodiane”.

L’IGPOTY organizza mostre itineranti, partendo dal
Regno Unito e poi in tutto il mondo.
L’evento 2012 ha avuto inizio il 5 marzo e fino
al 12 aprile le fotografie in concorso sono state
esposte al Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew di Londra.
IGPOTY ha selezionato I Maestri del paesaggio
2012 per organizzare la prima tappa italiana della
famosissima mostra itinerante.
Da giovedì 30 agosto a domenica 16 settembre sarà
possibile ammirare una selezione degli scatti del
concorso 2012, che immortalano soggetti con tema
paesaggio e giardini, all’interno dell’esclusiva Aula
Picta, edificio storico che sorge accanto alla maestosa
facciata della basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore nei
pressi di Piazza Vecchia che anche quest’anno tornerà
a vestirsi a verde!
L’Aula Picta, decorata con dipinti originali con XII
secolo, è concessa dal vescovo solo per eventi
no-profit, a carattere culturale e sociale.

What is IGPOTY?
The International Garden Photographer of the Year is
an international photographic competition now in its
fifth year. Started by a group of professional garden
photographers in 2007, it has quickly grown to become
the world’s premier exhibition of garden and plant
photography. Each year, the competition attracts over
20,000 entries from around 30 countries.
There are seven main categories and in addition,
an Under 16 section.
To quote the organiser, Philip Smith:
“Garden photography is an emerging genre. Using a garden as an
outdoor studio all photographers of any age and at any level of skill can
develop their artistic side. Garden photography encompasses many
aspects of other types of imagemaking, they are like mini-landscapes -
you can stalk and capture all kinds of wildlife or make your flowers look
like Hollywood starlets”.

IGPOTY is a touring exhibition, first shown in the United
Kingdom and then all over the world.
The 2012 event was held from 5 March to 12 April in
London at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
IGPOTY has chosen The International Meeting of the
Landscape and Garden as the first Italian leg of this

From 30 August to 16 September one may admire a
selection of images which immortalise their landscape
and garden subjects in the Aula Picta, a historical
building located near the majestic basilica of Santa Maria
Maggiore in Piazza Vecchia, a magical garden once more.
Permission to use the Aula Picta, its walls decorated with
frescos dating back to the the 12th century, is granted by
the bishop exclusively in the case of non-profit social and
cultural events.

medievale che si affaccia su Piazza Vecchia, che per
l’occasione diventa un giardino dai mille colori e dai
mille profumi.
Alla Serata di Gala partecipano tutti i Paesaggisti
che intervengono ai Workshop e al Meeting, i
numerosi ospiti, i giornalisti, i rappresentanti delle
Aziende Partner e gli iscritti di Meeting e Workshop
che intendono partecipare: un’occasione unica per
divertirsi e conoscersi.
Una serata con cena a buffet certificata Slow
Food, per la quale l’ingresso è a pagamento
(con registrazione) per tutti coloro che si iscriveranno
al Meeting o a un Workshop.

Following the resounding success of the 2011 edition,
we are once again to hold a Gala Evening beneath the
Portico of “Palazzo della Ragione”, which opens onto
the medieval square “Piazza Vecchia”, full of colour and
fragrance for the occasion.
The guest speakers from both Workshop and Meeting
will be present along with guests, journalists, partnering
company representatives and a number of Meeting and
Workshop participants who have chosen to attend.
It will be a unique occasion to relax, get to know one
another and have fun.
An evening complete with buffet dinner certified by

molti spazi verdi e giardini pubblici. All’inizio del 2006, entra a far parte
dello studio West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture come

John Brookes has designed and built well over 1000 gardens during a
career spanning 50 years. He is as active as ever and runs an extremely
busy design practice, creating gardens large and small, all over the UK
and abroad. He is best known for his ability to create gardens that relate
to their environment, designing gardens that fit into the wider landscape;
that best suit the style and period of the house and the functional and
stylistic aspirations of his clients. His extensive portfolio includes traditional
English gardens both formal and informal, modern, minimalist, Islamic
and wild gardens. He has won numerous awards throughout his career
including 4 Gold medals at Chelsea. Widely regarded within the garden
design world as an innovative and inspirational designer and plantsman,
he is regularly quoted as a source of inspiration in the media. He is also a
successful and prolific author, having written 24 best selling books, and
countless articles for newspapers and magazines. He lectures on garden
design in the UK and overseas and runs a design school in Argentina.
Christian Dobrick graduated in landscape architecture from the University

became head designer, and later managing director, at Rheims & Partner
in Krefeld (Germany). Together with other professionals he participated

Gabriele Kiefer (DE)
Ha studiato architettura del paesaggio presso l’Università di Berlino
e successivamente ha lavorato come assistente universitaria 1992.
Nel 1989 ha fondato lo studio Büro Kiefer a Kreuzberg, Berlino e
nel 2011 lo riorganizza dando il nome KieferCS insieme ai partner
Tancredi Capatti e Matthias Staubach. Ha vinto vari concorsi per
la sistemazione dei grandi spazi e piazze urbane. Lavorando come
docente universitaria ha partecipato a vari convegni: San Francisco,

Kiefer has been successful in many competitions for the conversion
of large areas and urban squares. Lecturing jobs and exhibitions have

Chile, Montreal, Shenzhen, Paris and Milan. In 2002 Gabriele G. Kiefer
was appointed to a Professorship for Landscape Architecture at the
University of Braunschweig and since 2011 she has taught regularly at the
Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia.
Catherine Mosbach (FR)
Laureata in Natural and Life Sciences e diplomata in Landscape

Marco Pozzoli (IT)
Nato a Firenze, laureato in Scienze Agrarie ed in Architettura. E’
stato responsabile interregionale (Toscana-Umbria-Emilia) dell’Ass.
Italiana Architetti Paesaggisti da 1984 a 1986. Docente nel Master in
Architettura dei Giardini e del Paesaggio della Facoltà di Architettura
dell’Università di Firenze e nel Corso di Laurea in Gestione tecnica
del Paesaggio dell’Università di Perugia. Progetta giardini per clienti
privati e pubblici, sede aziendali, ente pubblici, ecc. Tra i concorsi
vinti si segnalano: concorso internazionale per il nuovo ospedale di
Bergamo in qualità di progettista del paesaggio per la sistemazione
e l’inserimento ambientale del polo ospedaliero (2002 - primo
classificato), concorso internazionale di idee per la valorizzazione
fronte mare e zona bagni lido del comune di Rapallo (2006 - primo
classificato).
Marco Pozzoli, lives and works in Florence, graduate of Landscape Architecture and Agricultural
Sciences, Registered Architect, A.I.A.P.P. and IFLA member. International designer, founder and
director of the European School of Garden and Landscape Architecture at Villa Montalto. Interregional
Head (Toscana, Umbra, Emilia Romagna) of the Italian Association of Landscape Architects
in 1984-86. Presently Professor of “Landscape Design: Methods and Techniques” at Graduate
School of Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Territory Department of Architecture,
University of Genova and in Design Methods and Techniques of Green Areas at the Post Graduate
Master School of Garden Architecture, Project and setting of landscape at the Faculty of
Architecture - University of Florence, among other posts. Works for both private and public clients
– company headquarters, public administration etc. In 2006 he won First Prize in the International
Competition for development of the water front Rapallo (Liguria). In 2002 he was awarded First
Prize in the International Landscaping Competition for the new hospital in Bergamo - environmental
inclusion of the Main Hospital.

Peter Walker (USA)
Grande protagonista dell’architettura del paesaggio degli ultimi 50

Peter Walker has exerted a significant influence on the field of landscape architecture over
a five-decade career, Educated at the University of California at Berkeley and at the Harvard
University Graduate School of Design, Walker has taught, lectured, written, and served as
an advisor to numerous public agencies, while exerting personal control over the design of
his own projects. The scope of his landscape inquiries is expansive as well as deep. Projects
range from small gardens to new cities, from urban plazas to corporate headquarters
and academic campuses. With a dedicated concern for urban and environmental issues,
his designs shape the landscape in a variety of geographic and cultural contexts, from
the United States to Japan, China, Australia, and Europe. Walker is also the founder of
Spacemaker Press, and his work has been extensively published in Europe and Asia as well
as the United States. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and
of the Institute for Urban Design and has been granted the Honor Award of the American
Institute of Architects, Harvard’s Centennial Medal, the University of Virginia’s Thomas
Jefferson Medal, the ASLA Medal, and the IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Gold Medal.

Roberto Burdese è dal 2006 Presidente di Slow Food Italia. Entrato in
Slow Food nel 1991, ha un curriculum che spazia dalla collaborazione

Roberto Burdese has been President of di Slow Food Italy since 2006. A
member of Slow Food since 1991, he has collaborated with publishing
houses for various Slow Food publications. He has been involved in
event organisation such as “Il Salone del Gusto e Cheese”, has overseen
projects such as the re-organisation of the Pollenzo branch and the
establishment of the University of Gastronomic Sciences. He has coordinated
“Italia-Europa Liberi da Ogm - Italy and Europe free from OGM”
since 2006 which, by bringing together 32 of the most important Italian
companies, is a model for the development of agricultural food products
based on biodiversity, quality, the land and the community.

Peter Fink - FoRM Associates (UK)

Luciano Giubbilei (UK)
Nato in Toscana, si trasferisce a Londra per studiare garden design
alla Inchbald School of Design. Laureatosi con lode, lavora come
designer assistente di Anthony Paul, prima di aprire un proprio studio,
il Luciano Giubbilei Design, nel 1997. Caratterizzati da un design di

of his designs and aims to create a timeless and harmonious space and
his work has gained an international reputation. He won an RHS Gold
Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2009. In January 2011 Luciano
released his first book ‘The Gardens of Luciano Giubbiliei’.
Charlotte Rowe (UK)
Charlotte Rowe ha aperto il Suo studio a Londra nel 2004 appena
diplomata in Landscape Design ad Oxford. Da allora ha elaborato

gardening and design programmes and magazines as well as in a number
of specialist books looking at garden design around the world.

Rainer Schmidt - landschaftsarchitekten (D)
Rainer Schmidt (1954), ha studiato Conservazione e Tutela del
Paesaggio all’Istituto Superiore di Weihenstephan. Per 12 anni è stato
responsabile dello studio Gottfried Hansjakob a Monaco di Baviera.
Nel 1982 comincia a lavorare in proprio. Nel 1991 ha avviato lo studio
di architettura del paesaggio a Monaco di Baviera e Berlino, nel 1997
a Bernburg, nel 2005 a Pechino e sta per inaugurarne un altro a
Bejing. Dal 1991 è professore ordinario in l’Architettura del Paesaggio
all’Istituto Tecnico Superiore di Berlino. Vincitore della Buga 2006 di
Monaco di Baviera e di 2 premi Torsanlorenzo.
Rainer Schmidt (1954) studied land management at the University of
Applied Sciences in Weihenstepha. Having worked as office and project
head for the Gottfried Hansjakob landscape architecture office in Munich
for over twelve years, he went freelance in 1982. He was appointed to a
professorship in 1991 at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. In the
same year he opened his main office in Munich and a branch in Berlin, in
1997 another in Bernberg and in March 2005 in Peking and is about to
open one in Beijing.
Philip Smith - garden photographer IGPOTY (UK)
Ha studiato fotografia presso Bournemouth e Poole College of Art,
dove ha organizzato una mostra fotografica innovativa insieme
a Nick Knight. Dopo l’università, ha cominciato a lavorare come
“creative director” per un’azienda pioneristica nella nuova rivoluzione
informatica degli anni ‘80 e ‘90. Tornò al mondo della fotografia nel
2000. I suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati su libri e riviste di giardinaggio
e diventò socio della Professional Garden Photographers Association.
Oggi gestisce IGPOTY - International Garden Photographer of the Year

Philip studied photography at presso Bournemouth e Poole College of Art
where he created a ground-breaking exhibition of student photography
along with Nick Knight. After college, he took up a post as creative
director of a company pioneering the new media revolution of the 1980s
and 1990s. Philip turned back to photography in 2000. His photography
has bene published in many garden magazines and books and he
was a committee member of the Professional Garden Photographers
Association. He now runs International Garden Photographer of the Year
full-time from his family home in rural East Devon.
Andy Sturgeon (UK)
Andy Sturgeon è uno dei più importanti garden designer del
Regno Unito. Lavora sia nel Regno Unito che all’estero. Le sue
creazioni sono il risultato della fusione tra materiali tradizionali e
uno stile contemporaneo e sono diventate note per la loro qualità
architettonica senza tempo e per il modo innovativo di utilizzare le
piante. I suoi lavori sono spesso trasmessi in tv e pubblicati su libri
e riviste in tutto il mondo. Andy ha vinto 5 medaglie d’oro al RHS
Chelsea Flower Show (dal 2005 al 2008 e nel 2010 quando fu anche
premiato Best in Show) e ottenuto numerosi riconoscimenti.
Andy is one of the UK’s leading garden designers. His modern designs
are a fusion of traditional materials and contemporary styling which have
become known for their timeless architectural qualities and innovative
planting. He works in the United Kingdom and abroad and his work is
frequently featured on television and in books, magazines and papers
worldwide. Andy has won 5 RHS Gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show in
2005 - 2008 and in 2010, when he was also awarded Best in Show and
has received many accolades from both the press and other associations.
Cleve West (UK)
Spinto da John Brookes al The Royal Botanic Gardens, Cleve West
è un membro della Society of Garden Designers. È’ stato membro
della giuria per la Royal Horticultural Society alle mostre di Hampton
e di Chelsea. Noto come progettista di giardini innovativi. Vince la
Medaglia d’Oro al Chelsea Flower Show nel 2006 e nel 2008.
Nel 2011 e nel 2012 vince la Medaglia d’Oro e Best in Show Award.
Nel 2008 il giardino BUPA è stato accolto con plauso universale.
Il suo primo libro, ‘Our Plot’, è stato pubblicato da Frances Lincoln
nel mese di Ottobre 2011.
Trained by John Brookes at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Cleve West is a
member of the Society of Garden Designers and has judged for the Royal
Horticultural Society at the Hampton Court and Chelsea. He has built a
reputation for innovative garden landscapes. Cleve received an RHS Gold
Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2006 and 2008 and in 2011 and
2012 won a Gold Medal and the Best in Show award. The 2008 BUPA
garden was met with universal acclaim. His first book, ‘Our Plot’, was
published by Frances Lincoln in October 2011.
Franco Zagari - Franco Zagari Architetti (IT)
Architetto, paesaggista, vive e opera a Roma. Professore ordinario
di Architettura del paesaggio presso l’Università “Mediterranea” di
Reggio Calabria, dove è stato direttore del Dipartimento Oasi ed è
coordinatore del Dottorato di Architettura dei parchi, dei giardini e
assetto del territorio. Chévalier des arts et lettres, Ministére de la
culture, France. Premio europeo Gubbio 2009. Presidente della Giuria
della VI Biennale Europea di Paesaggio di Barcellona, 2010. Molte
opere realizzate in Italia e all’estero. È autore di saggi e film.
Both an architect and landscape architect, Mr. Zagari lives and works
in Rome. He is a professor in landscape architecture at “Mediterranea”
University in Reggio Calabria where he previously ran the “Dipartimento
Oasi” and is co-ordinator of the Doctorate programme in parks, gardens
and landscape planning. Chévalier des arts et lettres, Ministère de la

VI European Biennial of the Landscape, Barcellona, 2010. He has worked

SCOPERTA DI CITTÀ ALTA
Premessa
Unica città del Nord Italia distribuita in una parte alta e in una
pianeggiante; quasi completamente avvolta da un amplissimo
parco esteso sui colli che da sempre la abbracciano; municipium
romano per volere di Cesare, libero e potente comune in età
medievale, dal Quattrocento Bergamo divenne davvero “l’altra
Venezia”. Scrigno di opere d’insuperata bellezza, affacciata
dove la pianura dolcemente cede il passo alla montagna,
a Bergamo storia arte e natura disegnano un intreccio
incantevole da seguire e scoprire in ogni punto della trama.
L’itinerario pensato per Arketipos-I Maestri del Paesaggio
2012 mira a ripercorrere, attraverso la visita a opere d’arte,
monumenti e scorci inediti, la meravigliosa storia della città.
Della città di pietra e della città vivente. Dei suoi tesori, delle
sue strade. Degli uomini che nel corso dei secoli l’hanno
resa tale. Fondendo cultura e industriosità. Facendola
crescere e preservandone la bellezza. Rendendola unica.
La quota di partecipazione
della visita guidata ai luoghi di Città Alta è
€ 10,00 + IVA = TOT. € 12,10.
La visita guidata sarà attivata con un minimo
di 15 persone e un massimo di 30 persone
per gruppo. Durata massima 3 ore.

i.land è il campo agricolo ornamentale
di i.lab, il nuovo Centro Ricerca e
Innovazione del Gruppo Italcementi progettato
da Richard Meier. Concepito dallo Studio GPT -
Giardini Paesaggio Territorio, i.land nasce dal
desiderio di coniugare l’architettura di i.lab con la
cultura e la geografia del luogo: l’innovazione
con la tradizione autentica della terra bergamasca,
che in termini moderni diventa sostenibilità,
biodiversità e chilometro zero. Proprio della forza
della terra e del suo ambiente si è nutrito e arricchito
il progetto nella sua ideazione e nel suo divenire.

PROPOSED
ITINERARY
A unique city in northern Italy in two distinctive parts, one high and one low,
almost entirely surrounded by hills and lawns which have been its constant
companion. A Roman municipium much desired by Caesar and a powerful
city in medieval times, Bergamo became “the other Venice” from the
1400s. It is a treasure chest of unrivalled beauty situated where the
northern plain meets the foothills of the Alps where history, art and
nature weave a fascinating web to be discovered around every corner.
The proposed route for Arketipos – I Maestri del Paesaggio - aims to
retrace the glorious history of this unique city through works of art,
monuments and exclusive glimpses of the city’s treasures, of its
streets and inhabitants who over the centuries have made it what
it is with their culture and hard work thus allowing it to grow
while preserving its beauty.

i.land PROPOSED ITINERARY
i.land is the ornamental agricultural park
designed by Studio GPT - Giardini Paesaggio
Territorio, situated at i.lab, the new Centre
for Research and Innovation belonging to the
Italcementi group.
The concept behind i.land was born out of
a desire to unite the architecture of the i.lab
building, designed by the American architect
Richard Meier, with the culture and geogaphy of
the Bergamo area, innovation meeting tradition
which in modern terms translates into sustainability,
biodiversity, and “chilometro zero (an Italian term
coined to describe locally sourced, low impact
materials). It is from this natural dynamic that the
project has been enriched and created.

A due chilometri dalla città, l’Aeroporto di Orio al Serio è servito dalle
più importanti linee nazionali e internazionali. Dall’aeroporto, una linea
di autobus (Linea 1) - tutti i giorni dalle 6.04 alle 0.28, ogni circa 30 minuti
- porta alla stazione ferroviaria di Bergamo, alla coincidenza con la
funicolare di Città Alta e infine fa capolinea a Colle Aperto nel borgo di
Città Alta.
in Treno
Da Milano, ogni ora parte un treno per Bergamo.
Dalla stazione ferroviaria parte ogni dieci minuti un autobus (Linea 1)
che conduce alla coincidenza con la funicolare di Città Alta e infine fa
capolinea a Colle Aperto nel borgo di Città Alta.
in Auto
Autostrada A4 Milano-Venezia uscita Bergamo.
Si consiglia di parcheggiare in Città Bassa e di raggiungere Città Alta con
il mezzo pubblico, essendo per gran parte zona pedonale e con limitati
parcheggi a pagamento.

Situated 2 km from the city centre, Orio al Serio Airport is serviced by a number
of important Airlines. From the airport one may reach the centre of Bergamo by
bus (Line number 1) - daily, service operational from 6.04 to 0.28, leaving every
30 minutes. There are stops at Bergamo train station, at the funicular station
(which connects the lower and upper towns) and the terminus is in Colle Aperto
at the top of Città Alta (The Upper Town).

There are hourly trains from Milano to Bergamo.
From Bergamo train station, bus line number 1 departs, stopping at the
funicular station (which connects the lower and upper towns) and the

A4 Motorway Milano-Venezia, exit at Bergamo.
It is highly recommended to park in Città Bassa (the Lower Town) and reach
the Upper Town either with public transport or by foot as Città Alta itself is
largely pedestrianised and has limited paid parking.
