relaxing it is. Today, the many different Alpine plants and grasses are used in a multitude of spa treatments. Walter Moosmair, Italy’s 2007
young farmer of the year supplies hotels and spas throughout the region with his Passeier Valley organic hay.

The Passeier Valley has a richly eventful and interesting past. Cultural treasures include the ancient Rhaetian places of worship
found above the village of Stuls, the numerous churches and old farms that shape the valley landscape, the Painters’ House in
St. Martin, and of course the Sandhof, the birthplace of Andreas Hofer, probably the most famous of all Tyrolean freedom fi ghters.

Customs and traditions are very important to the valley’s inhabitants. The many festivals, processions and church feast days are a welcome
opportunity to wear traditional costume, sing, dance, eat and drink. Examples are June’s Herz Jesu festival when many small fi res illuminate
the surrounding peaks and September’s cattle drive when the cattle return to the valley for the winter.

Discovery Trail links the Passeier to the Oetztal Valley, providing visitors with information on the region along the way.

Gli eventi delle battaglie di liberazione tirolesi sono strettamente legati alla storia della Val Passiria, patria del loro protagonista più
importante. A distanza di 200 anni, le tracce di Andreas Hofer, l’eroe del 1809, sono tuttora presenti in occasione di feste popolari, cortei
e manifestazioni. Al MuseoPassiria a S. Leonardo sono esposti diversi pezzi originali appartenenti alla vita dell’eroe tirolese. Nel 2009 vi
è stata allestita anche una mostra permanente dal titolo “Eroi e Hofer”.
The events of Tyrol’s fi ght for freedom in 1809 are closely linked to the history of the Passeier Valley - after all they bred the valley’s
greatest hero, Andreas Hofer. The impressive collections at the museum at the Sandhof in St. Leonhard, where Hofer was born, and many
events throughout the year provide visitors with the opportunity to fi nd out more about his life and the valley’s history. A new permanent
exhibition, “Heroes+Hofer”, also looks at the events of 1809 from a European perspective.
CHI ERA ANDREAS HOFER
Andreas Hofer nacque il 22 novembre 1767 presso
il maso Sandwirt a S. Leonardo in Passiria. Duran-
te le guerre della liberazione guidò la rivolta dei
tirolesi contro le truppe napoleoniche e diventò
reggente del Tirolo. La pace di Schönbrunn spinse
Andreas Hofer ad una nuova insurrezione che si
concluse però con la sconfi tta dei tirolesi sul Berg-
isel a Innsbruck. Hofer dovette fuggire. Tradito, fu
preso prigioniero nella baita della malga Pfandler
sopra S. Martino in Passiria e venne fucilato a Man-
tova il 20 febbraio 1810.
FACT FILE >> ANDREAS HOFER
Andreas Hofer was born on 22nd November 1767
at the Sandhof in St. Leonhard in Passeier. In the
Tyrolean freedom wars of 1809 he led his country-
men to victory three times in the fight against
Napoleon’s troops, and became commander- in-
chief of the Tyrolean army.
However, a further uprising after the Treaty of
Schönbrunn ended in their defeat at Bergisel near
Innsbruck. Andreas Hofer fl ed to the Pfandler Alp
above St. Martin in Passeier, but was betrayed,
captured and executed by fi ring squad in Mantua
in northern Italy on 20th February 1810.

FESTIVAL DI AUTO D’EPOCA IN VAL PASSIRIA · PASSEIER VALLEY CLASSIC CAR FESTIVAL
Dal 3 al 7 maggio in Val Passiria si svolgerà il 1°Festival internazionale di auto d’epoca, organizzato
in collaborazione con il Racing Team Merano. Il programma dei 3 giorni prevede per esempio una
serata di gala per i partecipanti, un concorso di regolarità nonché un raduno di autovetture storiche.
Il grande evento coinvolge le località di S. Martino e S. Leonardo e il Passo Giovo. Maggiori informazioni

From 3rd to 7th May the 1st International Passeier Valley Classic Car Festival will be taking place in
collaboration with Racing Team Merano. During the three days there is a variety of different activities
on the programme, such as a gala evening for the participants, a regularity competition and a gathering
of historic vehicles. The stage for the events will be the villages of St. Martin and St. Leonhard, plus
the Jaufen Pass. More details of the itinerary are available on www.rtmeran.com or in the valley’s

CORSA POPOLARE DI ANDREAS HOFER · ANDREAS HOFER FUN RUN
Domenica 30 maggio, a San Martino si svolgerà per la seconda volta la Corsa Popolare di Andreas
Hofer, in memoria dell’eroe tirolese. Lungo il percorso si avrà modo di ammirare la splendida natura
primaverile. È previsto sia un tracciato per adulti che un percorso più breve per bambini. Al termine
della corsa verrà organizzata una grande festa per famiglie in Piazza Feste a S. Martino. A tutti i
partecipanti sarà riservato un gradito omaggio. Maggiori informazioni in merito alla corsa sono
disponibili presso gli uffici turistici della valle o sul sito www.andreashofervolkslauf.it. Per l’iscrizione
bisogna consultare il sito.
Sunday 30th of May, St. Martin will be staging the 2nd Andreas Hofer fun run to commemorate the
freedom fighter. Runners can experience the arrival of spring at close quarters as they complete the
route. There is a route for adults as well as a slightly shorter one for children. After the run there will
be a family celebration on St. Martin’s showground. Every runner receives a great starter’s pack. More
details on the run can be obtained from the valley’s tourist information offices or www.andreashofervolkslauf.it.

GIORNATA IN BICI PER FAMIGLIE · FAMILY CYCLING DAY
In Val Passiria, il 16 maggio 2010 è tutto dedicato alla bicicletta. In occasione della Giornata in bici
per famiglie, i partecipanti troveranno lungo la ciclabile da Rifiano a S. Leonardo (15 km ca.) tutta
una serie di giochi e di attrazioni. Nei piazzali di festa a Rifiano e a S. Leonardo l’evento sarà inaugurato
con il tradizionale brindisi mattutino.
On 16th May 2010 we’re dedicating a whole day to cycling here in the Passeier Valley. Participants
in the family cycling day can enjoy all kinds of games and activities along the approx. 15 km route
along the banks of the Passer from Riffian to St. Leonhard. There’ll also be a morning drink with
entertainment on the showgrounds in Riffian and St. Leonhard.
SALEWA CUP
Il 18 luglio avrà luogo l’12a edizione del Salewa Cup a Plan. Anche quest’anno si attende la partecipazione
di atleti da tutte le parti dell’Alto Adige, dal Trentino, da Vicenza, ma anche dalla Germania,
dall’Austria, dalla Svizzera e dall’Olanda. Il percorso è lungo 10,4 km e il dislivello ammonta a 1.255
m. Si parte dal parcheggio a Plan (1.620 m) per raggiungere il Rifugio Stettiner a 2.875 m.
On 18th July the 12th Salewa Cup will be held in Pfelders! This year again we’re expecting a strong
line-up, with athletes from South Tyrol, Trentino, Vicenza, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the
Netherlands. The route is around 10.4 km long and climbs 1,255 metres. The race starts in the car
park in Pfelders (1,620 m) and finishes at the Stettiner Hut at 2,875 m above sea level.

St. Leonhard, for example, has the “Marktlfeschte” festival, and St. Martin has the “Mortiner

In collaborazione con l’Associazione Guide Alpine Passiria-Senales, l’associazione turistica propone
fantastiche escursioni nel corso dei mesi estivi: tour alla conquista delle vette, escursioni d’impronta
didattica alla scoperta della natura nonché escursioni di maso in maso con degustazione di prodotti
tipici – ce n’è per tutti i gusti.
The Tourist Information Association organises guided hikes over the summer months in cooperation
with the Passeier-Schnals Mountain Guide Association. These include alpine summit tours, nature
trails with the theme “discovering, experiencing and understanding nature together”, as well as farm
walks with produce tastings.

EVENTI ALL’INSEGNA DEL GUSTO A VALTINA · WALTEN GOURMET EVENTS
L’11 e il 18 luglio a Valtina si svolgerà il “tour del gusto”, un viaggio culinario del tutto particolare. Le
5 portate sono infatti suddivise sui 5 punti di sosta posizionati lungo il percorso. In occasione delle
“giornate per buongustai”, dal 19 al 27 giugno, i gestori delle trattorie e baite invitano alla degustazione
di piatti tradizionali. Tutto termina con la “festa del paese” di Valtina, domenica 5 settembre,
organizzata dagli osti e dalle associazioni locali che invitano a prendere parte ad una particolarissima
escursione all’insegna del gusto con tante attrazioni e momenti clou.
The “Walten Gourmet Tours” take place on 11th and 18th July. A culinary walking tour par excellence!
One course of a meal is served at each of 5 points along the circular route. On the “Walten Gourmet Days”,
Walten‘s landlords, restaurateurs and alpine huts invite visitors to enjoy traditional specialities from
19th to 27th June. The gourmet events come to an end on Sunday 5th September with Walten’s “Different
Kind of Village Festival”. Landlords, restaurateurs and local clubs hold an extraordinary festival to which
everyone is welcome. An eventful gourmet hiking tour with many highlights and attractions!
VIVERE L’ALTA VAL PASSIRIA · EXPERIENCE THE UPPER PASSEIER VALLEY
Nei mesi di luglio e agosto le diverse località dell’Alta Val Passiria organizzano i tradizionali “Frühschoppen”,
una sorta di brindisi mattutino con specialità locali che darà modo di avvicinarsi alla
cultura e alle usanze del posto. Accanto ad un mercato contadino e a pietanze tipiche, il momento
di festa sarà allietato da musica tradizionale dal vivo. Gli eventi sono organizzati in collaborazione
con le associazioni e le contadine del posto.
This is the theme for our traditional Sunday morning “Frühschoppen”, which takes place in every
village in the Upper Passeier Valley during July and August. The aim is to bring the area’s customs
and culture closer to our visitors, and the event includes a farmers’ market and typical rural fare, plus
traditional musical entertainment. The events are organised with local associations and farmers’ wives.

FESTA AUTUNNALE A RIFIANO · RIFFIAN AUTUMN FESTIVAL
Ogni anno in autunno si rinnova l’appuntamento con la festa autunnale nel paese di Rifiano. I festeggiamenti
sono accompagnati dalle note musicali di varie bande locali. Il momento clou è il tradizionale
corteo di festa nel pomeriggio. Il programma di contorno prevede balli, divertimento e tante delizie
gastronomiche.
Riffian’s annual autumn festival will be taking place again this year. The festival starts with a sociable
and hearty Sunday morning drink and musical entertainment. This is followed in the afternoon by
the traditional procession. Afterwards there’s dancing and entertainment from several local bands,
and delicious food and drink.

A whole village celebrates! S. Martino’s village associations invite you to the 23nd S. Martino Village
Festival on 11th and 12th September. The two days offer plenty of food and drink, fun and dancing
with international folk music groups. For the young and young at heart!
SAPORI AUTUNNALI IN VAL PASSIRIA · AUTUMN FOR GOURMETS
Un autunno tutto all’insegna del piacere e del gusto! In occasione della fiera agricola il 26 settembre,
i diversi masi della valle offrono in vendita i prodotti di produzione propria quali marmellate, succhi,
formaggi, pane, speck e pomate a base di erbe naturali. Nell’ultima settimana di settembre e nelle
prime due settimane di ottobre, i ristoranti e le trattorie dell’Alta Val Passiria invitano ad assaggiare
le pietanze tipiche della cucina contadina come arrosto di camoscio, canederli o frittata di grano
saraceno. In occasione delle settimane del gusto, si avrà modo di assaggiare nei vari ristoranti e locali
in Val Passiria pietanze e specialità del posto preparate con alimenti coltivati esclusivamente da
aziende agricole della valle.

and the first two weeks in October, landlords in the Upper Passeier Valley invite you to dine with
them during the “Bauernkuchl” weeks. Visitors are invited to feast on the traditional dishes on offer.
The season comes to an end with the “Passeier Valley Gourmet Weeks”, when a number of establishments
in the valley offer dishes that are made exclusively from the valley farmers’ produce.

Our hiking trails are at their best in time for the start of spring. To present the varied
range of hikes on offer to visitors, a number of guided hikes are available. The €75

Da ottobre 2009, il comune di Moso nell’Alta Val Passiria fa parte dell’associazione
“Perle delle Alpi”. Preparatevi ad esplorare parti dell’Alta Via di Merano e di Tirolo nonché
il Sentiero Europeo E5 e il percorso circolare “Kummersee”. Il pacchetto prevede
inoltre una visita guidata alle gallerie della miniera di Monteneve, un tempo la miniera
più alta d’Europa, con pernottamento in baita, e una visita al nuovo BunkerMooseum
a Moso. Per finire, ci aspetta un’escursione a Racines con visita al Museo delle Miniere.
Grazie alla “museummobil Card” si possono utilizzare tutti i mezzi di trasporto pubblico
e visitare numerosi musei della provincia. È compresa anche una cartina escursionistica
della Val Passiria.
Since October 2009, the Upper Passeier Valley and the community of Moos in
Passeier have been part of the “Pearls of the Alps” network. Explore stretches of the
Meran and Tirol high mountain trails, plus the E5 hiking trail and the path around
Lake Kummersee. Along with a visit to the new “Bunker Mooseum” in Moos, one of
the highlights of the package is a guided tour of what was once the highest mine in
Europe on the Schneeberg, with a trip down the tunnels and an overnight stay in a
hut on the mountain. The package is rounded off with a hike to Ratschings and a
visit to its mining museum. The “museummobil card” entitles holders to use all forms
of public transport in South Tyrol as well as to visit a number of museums in the
region. The package also includes a Passeier Valley hiking map.
