Cipro, splendida isola del

Giungendo
a Limassol…
Lemesos (Limassol), la
seconda città dell’isola, si
è sviluppata tra gli antichi
siti di Amathous ad est e
Kourion [Curium] a ovest.
Limassol è uno splendido
mix di antico e moderno.
La zona commerciale di
Agios Andreas è ricca
di luminosi negozi che
vendono prodotti in
pelle dell’artigianato
locale, vestiti, gioelleria

museo archeologico e
il castello di Limassol
vicino al porto antico,
teatro del matrimonio di

Arriving
at Limassol…
Lemesos (Limassol), the
second largest town,
has evolved between
the two ancient sites of
Amathous in the east
and Kourion [Curium]
in the west. Lemesos
is a delightful blend
of old and new. The
main shopping area of
Agios Andreas is full
of brightly lit shops selling
locally made leather goods,
clothing, jewellery and
pottery. The area’s history
can be traced by visiting
the town’s Archaeological
Museum and Lemesos castle
near the old port, which was
the splendid setting for the
marriage of King Richard the
Lionheart to Berengaria of
Navarre, in 1191 and now
houses the Cyprus Medieval
Museum. Further afield lie the
fascinating ruins of Ancient
Amathous one of the island’s
oldest city kingdoms where
the first temple dedicated
Aphrodite was built.

Amazzonia è un territorio che comunica spiritualità
e magia, sia per la meraviglia della
sua natura incontaminata, sia per il fascino
delle popolazioni indios che ancora abitano
nella giungla. Il suo nome ha origine nel mito e si collega
direttamente alle Amazzoni, le donne guerriere
che si racconta abitassero questi luoghi, da cui il nome
Amazzonia.
Il modo più suggestivo per esplorarla è risalire lungo il
fiume che ne attraversa il cuore: il Rio delle Amazzoni, il
più grande del mondo per portata d’acqua e il secondo
in lunghezza dopo il Nilo. Il primo a descrivere agli europei
proprio questa speciale navigazione fu Alexander
von Humboldt, il naturalista tedesco che alla fine del
1700 risalì il Rio classificando, nell’arco di cinque anni,
centinaia di specie di piante e animali e incontrando
molte popolazioni amazzoniche, tra cui i Curripaco e i
nomadi Yanomami. Certo, oggi l’incontro con le poche
popolazioni indios rimaste a vivere nella Foresta Vergine
non è stupefacente come quello raccontato dall’antropologo
Claude Lévi-Strauss negli anni Trenta (“In che
ordine descrivere quelle impressioni profonde e confuse
che assalgono il nuovo arrivato in un villaggio indigeno
la cui civiltà è rimasta relativamente intatta?”), perché
quasi tutte hanno avuto un contatto con la civiltà moderna
che le ha influenzate e mutate per sempre. Volgendo
lo sguardo sul paesaggio che circonda queste culture
indigene, invece, si nota come la natura sia rimasta
immutata da millenni. Se si escludono le zone in cui

The Amazon rainforest communicates spirituality
and magic, both with the marvel of its uncontaminated
wilderness and with the fascination
of the indios peoples that still live in the
jungle. The name of the area, Amazonas, has legendary
origins and derives from the popular legend of the Amazons,
the warrior women said to have lived here.
The most exhilarating way to explore Amazonas is to travel
up the river that passes through its heart: the Amazon River,
the world’s biggest in terms of volume and the second
longest after the Nile. The first to describe this navigation
for a European audience was Alexander von Humboldt,
the German naturalist who in the late eighteenth century
sailed up the river and, over five years, classified hundreds
of species of plants and animals and encountered numerous
Amazonian peoples, including the Curripaco and the
nomadic Yanomami. Obviously, today encountering the
few indios tribes who still live in the virgin rainforest is no
longer the life-changing experience related by the anthropologist
Claude Lévi-Strauss in the 1930s (who wondered
which of the profound and confused impressions that
assailed him on arrival in an indigenous village with its
civilisation still relatively intact he should describe first),
because today almost all tribes have had contact with
modern civilisation and been influenced and changed by
it forever. But turning to gaze at the jungle that surrounds
these indigenous cultures, it is easy to see that nature here
has remained unchanged for millennia - if you exclude
the areas where deforestation by man is unfortunately
compromising what is considered the lung of the Earth.
This phenomenon is, tragically, on the increase. The Amazon
rainforest cannot fail to elicit unforgettable emotions,
partly because of its unequalled dimensions: at 5.5 million
square kilometres distributed over Brazil, Colombia,
Guyana, Surinam, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, it
is the planet’s biggest equatorial forest.
The two biggest cities in this area are Manaus and Belém:
the former is in the heart of the forest and is the capital

la deforestazione per opera dell’uomo sta purtroppo
compromettendo quello che è considerato il polmone
della Terra. Un fenomeno tragicamente in crescita. La
foresta equatoriale più vasta del mondo suscita in ogni
modo emozioni indimenticabili, forse anche per le sue
dimensioni senza eguali: circa 5,5 milioni di chilometri
quadrati distribuiti tra Brasile, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname,
Venezuela, Ecuador, Perù e Bolivia.
Le due città più importanti dell’Amazzonia sono
Manaus e Belém: la prima si trova nel cuore della foresta
ed è la capitale dello stato di Amazonas, mentre la
seconda è capitale dello stato di Parà, una città di oltre
un milione di abitanti alla foce del Rio delle Amazzoni.
Manaus per oltre due secoli è stata crocevia commerciale
dell’intero territorio amazzonico, con un transito
di navi che trasportavano cacao, indaco, legname e
caucciù pari a nessun’altra città amazzonica. È la meta
ideale per approfondire la conoscenza della storia e
delle tradizioni delle popolazioni locali, nel Museo do
Índio, che raccoglie una collezione di oggetti dei popoli
indigeni dell’alto Rio Negro, e in quello dell’Homen do
Norte, con oggetti e utensili delle popolazioni autoctone.
Merita inoltre una visita il giardino botanico più
grande del mondo, che si chiama Adolpho Ducke, anche
se la vera attrazione di Manaus è lo straordinario fenomeno
naturale della confluenza delle acque scure del
Rio Negro con quelle marrone-chiaro del Rio Solimões.
Più raccolta di Manaus è Santarém, una cittadina di circa
200mila abitanti a metà strada tra Manaus e Belém.
Anche qui si può godere dello spettacolo della confluenza
delle acque azzurre-verdastre del fiume Tapajós e di
quelle marroni argillose del fiume Amazonas, che non
si mescolano mai.
In questa regione le risorse naturali sono assai redditizie,
tanto che anche Henry Ford, il re dell’automobile,
negli anni Venti decise di fondare nel cuore della giungla
una fabbrica di pneumatici, costruiti con il caucciù
di cui questa regione è ricchissima. Intorno a essa fu
edificata anche una città, Fordlandia, oggi scomparsa
ma che si troverebbe vicino a Santarém.
Procedendo verso il mare, si arriva infine alla città di
Macapà, capitale dello stato di Amapà. Arrivati qui il
viaggio da Manaus alla foce del Rio delle Amazzoni
si conclude sulla linea dell’equatore, che attraversa la
parte meridionale della città dove si mangiano i migliori
açaì (si pronuncia “assaì”) il frutto definito anche
“Frutto della vita”, che si presenta come una piccola
bacca dalle portentose proprietà nutritive e antiossidanti.
Un atto beneaugurante per concludere l’avventura
amazzonica nel migliore dei modi. •

For over two centuries Manaus has been a commercial
crossroads for the entire Amazon territory, with a transit
of ships transporting cocoa, indigo, lumber and rubber
unequalled by any other Amazonian city. It’s the ideal
destination and base for exploring the history and traditions
of the local peoples, in the “do Índio museum” with
its collection of artefacts of the indigenous peoples of the
high Rio Negro, and in the Homen do Norte museum, with
objects and utensils from aboriginal tribes. Also worth a
visit is the biggest botanic garden in the world, Adolpho
Ducke, but the star attraction in Manaus is the extraordinary
natural phenomenon of the confluence of the Rio
Negro’s dark waters with the clearer brown waters of the
Rio Solimões.
More compact than Manaus is Santarém, a town of
200,000 inhabitants half-way between Manaus and
Belém. Here too you can enjoy the spectacle of the confluence
of the green-and-blue waters of the Tapajós river
with the earthy, brown waters of the Amazonas river,
which never mix.
In this region the natural resources are extremely profitable,
so much so that in the 1920s Henry Ford decided to
build a tyre factory in the heart of the jungle, making
tyres from the rubber which is so plentiful here. A city
sprang up around the factory near Santarém, called ‘Fordlandia’,
which today has been reclaimed by the jungle.
Continuing towards the sea brings you to the city of
Macapà, capital of Amapà state. Once you arrive here, the
voyage from Manaus at the mouth of the Amazon River
ends right at the equator itself, which crosses the south of
the city. This is where the best açaì (pronounced “assaee”)
is found: known as the “fruit of life”, this is a small
berry with prodigious nutritive and antioxidant properties.
A very healthy and enjoyable way to conclude an
Amazon adventure in the best possible way. •

Una sosta balneare nel villaggio di Alter-do-Chão, a
circa 30 chilometri da Santarém, la più famosa spiaggia
(lungofiume) della zona.
Fermarsi al mercato di Ver-o-Peso di Belém, per comprare
artigianato tipico, provare la cucina più autentica
e godere della vista di una grande quantità di erbe aromatiche
e medicinali.
A Manaus si fanno buoni acquisti di cesti creati utilizzando
semi, liane, fibre e legno regionale nella Centrale
di Artigianato Branco e Silva.
L’Amazzonia è il luogo giusto per fare birdwatching, perché
qui ci sono oltre 2000 specie di uccelli. Scoprire il
lago Janauacá, vicino a Manaus, dove di notte arrivano
anche i coccodrilli.

diverso dal continente africano; è verde e rigoglioso,
ma ha anche una regione quasi desertica:
il Madagascar è la quarta isola più grande

ebano, palissandro, 7 tipi di baobab, mentre in Africa ne
esiste solo uno, bamboo giganti, piante grasse di ogni
genere: una varietà vegetale che ha fatto guadagnare
al Madagascar l’appellativo di Santuario della natura e
che si può godere nelle riserve naturali, come il Parco
Nazionale Montagna d’Ambra, tra i più belli dell’isola.
Ma se non si ha tempo o spirito avventuriero per fare
l’esploratore, orchidee e lemuri si possono vedere da

It is at once both fascinating and mysterious. It’s in
Africa, but very different from the African continent;
it’s a green and flourishing land, but it also has a region
that is almost desert. Madagascar is the planet’s
fourth biggest island, a land that seems to guard the most
ancient secrets of Africa and which leaves visitors saucereyed,
awestruck by the sheer variety of its natural history
and the richness of its culture.
The Madagascans say that, seen from a great height, their
country resembles the left footprint of a giant, and that
the toes are the most scenic islands, located in the north of
the country. Those who visit Madagascar return with the
sensation that they have set foot in a land that is difficult
to understand at the first encounter, but which is so rich in
resources, vegetation, animals and history that they want
to come back and find out more.
Situated southeast of the great African continent, off the
coast of Mozambique, Madagascar is revered by botanists
and ethologists alike because here there are flora and fauna
that are found nowhere else on Earth, and which evolved
here and only here because the island broke away from the
rest of Africa 160 million years ago. It’s a length of time that
is difficult to imagine, but its end effects are in plain view.
Here you will not see the great mammals of Africa, like elephants,
lions or antelope, but instead native species in 95%
of cases. The most obvious and most striking are lemurs, the
country’s national symbol: these small mammals never
grow bigger than a dog, they have large, dark round eyes,
and they are considered the progenitors of monkeys. And
then there are the 12,000 species of plant, over 800 types
of orchid, 130 different palms and also ebony, rosewood, 7
types of baobab (in all of Africa there is only one), giant
bamboo, and succulent plants of every type: a variety of
vegetation that has earned Madagascar the sobriquet of
“nature sanctuary” and which can be properly experienced
in nature reserves like the Amber Mountain National Park,
among the most beautiful on the island.

misura 1.600 km e da Ovest a Est 540, e il clima piovoso
o secco a seconda delle zone fa sì che percorrere il Madagascar
da un estremo all’altro sia come sfogliare un
calendario delle quattro stagioni.
La zona settentrionale è la più attrezzata e organizzata dal
punto di vista turistico, e quindi la più agevole per un primo

più forte, invece, può rimanere sulla costa e scegliere
come base Diego Suarez (Antsiranana), un tempo
porto militare francese e oggi secondo porto del paese,
che si trova a Nord, nella baia più bella del Madgascar.
La città è al centro di un numero importante di parchi
nazionali e di attrazioni naturalistiche, tra cui la Montagna
d’Ambra, un antico vulcano
alto 1.475 metri e il lago

from north to south the country

travelling end-to-end through Madagascar is like flicking
through a photographic calendar of the four seasons.
The northern end is the best equipped and organised for
tourists, and therefore this is the best choice for a first
visit to Madagascar.
For a total immersion in the stupendous Malagasy sea,
Nosy Be is ideal. Half an hour by
rapid boat from the coast, the
“big island” (this is the meaning
of its name) is also known as the
island of perfumes: here there
are sprawling plantations of
Ylang-Ylang trees, the flowers of
which are used to produce a delicate
essence used by the world’s
most famous perfumeries. But
Nosy Be is not lacking in urban
centres either: there’s Hell Ville
(the biggest on the island), where
you can find delicious spices and
local crafts including wooden
sculptures and embroidered tablecloths.
Visitors in search of a stronger cultural and natural experience
would do well to stick to the coast and base themselves
at Diego Suarez (Antsiranana), once a French military
harbour and today the country’s second biggest port.
It is in the north of the country, in the most panoramic
bay in Madagascar. The city is at the centre of a large
number of national parks and nature attractions, including
the Amber Mountain, an ancient volcano 1,475 metres
high, and the sacred lake of Anivorano.
Here you regain the sensation
that you are still in Africa: in
the city the modern and the
antique live side by side, the
streets are always crowded, the
markets colourful and chaotic,
and there are the old French
colonial buildings, often in a
state of decay. It all adds up to

Nel Parco Nazionale Montagna d’Ambra, 35 km a Sud

est e ovest, quindi possono servire come bussola, e

formed over 400 million years ago. 80 km from Diego
Suarez (Antsiranana).
South of Nosy Be is Nosy Tanikely Marine Park, a small
atoll that’s more like a tropical aquarium where, just a
few metres below the surface, you can see marine fauna
of truly breathtaking beauty. A paradise for scuba
divers, it’s also perfect for snorkelling. If you’re lucky
you might even see sea turtles.
In the Amber Mountain National Park, 35 km south of
Diego Suarez, you can see the traveller’s palm, a native
species so called for two reasons: its fan-shaped leaves
point directly east and west, making the tree useful as
a compass, and at the base of each leaf the tree collects
from two to four pints of drinkable water, a useful resource
for travellers on foot.

Arrivare a Lisbona significa farsi avvolgere dai
contrasti di una città che ancora conserva nel
cuore dei suoi quartieri le voci dei mercati e
il suono di musiche nostalgiche e passionali.
Donne con ceste di frutta in testa si affiancano a intellettuali
che conversano nelle caffetterie. Profumi di vecchie
osterie, panni stesi alle finestre e suoni di saudade
dei cantanti di fado fanno di Lisbona una delle città più
letterarie e poetiche d’Europa tanto che registi come
wim wenders e scrittori come Antonio Tabucchi l’hanno
eletta a protagonista delle loro storie. Una città di
incroci e di crocevia, una città di mare. Perché a Lisbona
non si può che arrivare dal mare. Imboccando l’estuario
del Tago soprannominato il “mare di paglia” per i suoi
riflessi dorati, fili di luce gialli, è dal mare, da Praça do
Comércio nella zona compresa tra Baixa e Belem che si
incontreranno con grande fascino l’ antico e il moderno.
La Baixa infatti, quartiere colpito durante il terremotomaremoto
del 1755, fu completamente ricostruito dal
marchese di Pombal che lo fece con una precisione regolare
e quadrata, completamente diversa ad esempio
dalle vie dedaliche di altri quartieri come l’Alfama. Ma
non è questo forse il fascino di una città i cui tempi storici
si sono mischiati tra loro? Con i suoi sette colli Lisbona
sembra infatti avere anche più di sette anime.
L’Expo 98, in occasione della commemorazione dei 500
anni del viaggio di Vasco da Gama, fu l’occasione per la
città di velocizzare un processo di modernizzazione che
le permise di restaurare antichi palazzi, di implementare
le reti metropolitane e di riedificare un quartiere intero,
il Chiado, uno dei più importanti ed eleganti del centro
storico insieme al Rossio, quartieri pulsanti e vivi come
luoghi di aggregazione. Attraversare il Rossio da cui par-

Arriving in Lisbon means being enveloped in the
contrasts of a city that cherishes the market
cries and the sounds of nostalgic and passionate
music in the heart of its old quarters. Women
with baskets of fruit on their heads can be seen next to
intellectuals arguing in cafés. Enticing aromas from old
taverns, clothes hung out to dry from windows and the
sounds of saudade (the closest English translation is a
sort of ‘melancholy longing’) from fado singers all go to
make Lisbon one of the most literary and poetic cities in
Europe: so much so that directors like Wim Wenders and
writers like Antonio Tabucchi have given it a leading role
in their works. Lisbon is a city of crossings and crossroads, a
city of the sea. For the true Lisbonophile, the only way to
arrive in the city is by sea: on entering the Tagus estuary,
nicknamed the “Sea of Straw” for its reflections of gold
that cast threads of yellow light, it is from the sea - from
Praça do Comércio in the area contained between Baixa
and Belem - that you can properly appreciate how the
antique and the modern meet and fuse together. Baixa,
a quarter that was heavily hit in the earthquake and
seaquake of 1755, was completely rebuilt by the Marquis
of Pombal who laid the area out with a rectangularity and
precision that utterly clashes with the corkscrew streets in
other quarters like Alfama. But is this not the very soul
and charm of a city whose historical fortunes freely intermixed
with each other? With its seven hills, Lisbon seems
to have at least seven souls, perhaps even more.
The 1998 Expo held to commemorate the 500th anniversary
of the voyage of Vasco da Gama was the city’s cue
to accelerate a process of modernisation that included
restoring historical buildings, building metro lines and
even rebuilding an entire quarter: Chiado is one of the

ai quartieri residenziali, arrivando a Praça dos Restauradores
per salire così al Bairro Alto un insieme di piccole
stradine, che per i numerosi locali è diventato una delle
zone più festaiole. Salire e scendere. O a piedi o con i
tram, le cui discese ripidissime sembrano sfidare la legge
di gravità. Il rumore che sferraglia e l’autista che cambia
le marce sono un’immagine fotografica che rimane
nella memoria insieme agli odori lisbonesi di ginginha,
il tipico liquore di amarene o le pastéis de bacalhau le
famose frittelle di baccalà.
Ma è lungo il Tago che bisogna tornare per arrivare fino
a Belem e vedere completamente un’altra architettura.
Una città a parte. Il monumento a Enrico I il Navigatore
costruito nel 1960 ma ispirato alla costruzione che vi era
nella stessa piazza durante l’Esposizione universale del
1940 e la Torre di Belem nata come torre di guardia con
un’architettura militare ad opera di Francisco Arruda. Ed
è questo l’incanto e la fascinazione di
essere a Lisbona. Entrare e uscire. Salire
e scendere attraversando la storia. •

most important and elegant neighbourhoods of the old
city centre, together with Rossio, both quarters are pulsating
and lively meeting spots. Walking through Rossio, from
which all the other major streets radiate, is the perfect
opportunity to admire the shops and cafés covered with
the traditional local azulejos (ceramic brick tiles), watch
men playing cards, and then walk along the Avenida de
la Liberdade. This avenue leads to the residential quarters,
finally coming to Praça dos Restauradores to climb up to
Bairro Alto (‘High Neighbourhood’), a knot of twisty little
streets which with its numerous bars has become one of
the partygoer’s priority destinations. Climb up and come
down again, on foot or by tram (their ability to descend
extremely quickly seems to defy the law of gravity). The
rattle and clang of the tram and the driver changing gears
make up a sensory photograph that stays in the memory
together with the smells of ginginha, the traditional Lisbon
spirit made from black cherries, or the pastéis de bacalhau,
the famous cod pancakes.
But it’s the Tagus that you must come back to, in order to
reach Belem and see another type of architecture entirely:
almost a different city. The monument to
Henry I, the Navigator, was built in 1960
but takes its inspiration from the construction
that occupied the square during
the Universal Exposition of 1940, and
there is also the Belem Tower, originally
built as a military lookout and guard
tower by Francisco Arruda. And here lies
the enchantment and fascination of being
in Lisbon. Whether you’re entering or
leaving, climbing or descending, you always
pass through history. •

Before seeing Lisbon, during the Golden Age, conquistadores
returning from the New World sighted Cascais, today a
town rich in entertainment, bars and restaurants, especially
in summer.
Between Lisbon and Sintra lies Queluz, 10 km from the capital.
It is a modern town but a strong sense of the past lives
on in its royal palace, known as the “Portuguese Versailles”.
20 km west of the mouth of the Tagus is the “city of the two
springs” (as in season, not as in water source): Estoril, a seaside
resort flanked by elegant Patrician villas. Casinos, golf

Lo storico villaggio di Corellianum, risale al 977 d.C.,
anno in cui gli abitanti del luogo furono costretti
a spostarsi sui colli, a seguito dell’incursione
araba da parte dell’emiro di Palermo,
al Quasim. Ed è proprio su un poggio dominato da un castello,
che Corigliano Calabro trova posto, nel cuore della
piana di Sibari, tra le pendici della Sila e le acque del Mar
Ionio, un angolo di Calabria in cui si mischiano come un
racconto quasi fiabesco elementi della tradizione latina,
greca, bizantina e normanna.
Visitare Corigliano significa passeggiare in atmosfere
dalle mura riarse dal sole che picchia dall’alto e colora la
vegetazione facendone avvertire quasi gli aromi. La maestosità
e l’eleganza del centro storico, la cupola rivestita
da maioliche della Chiesa di Sant’Antonio con la bella
facciata barocca, passando per Via Roma, l’arteria principale
della città, accompagnano fino a Piazza del Popolo
centro di ritrovo cittadino. Da qui, salendo, da Piazza
Compagna si ha la visione della bellezza dirompente della
facciata del Castello Ducale con la sua scala a chiocciola
che porta alla Torre Mastio, edificato nel 1073 come
postazione militare e trasformato in seguito in residenza
nobiliare del conte Sanseverino. Ma la
storia di un paese passa anche attraverso
i suoi sapori e le sue tradizioni culinarie.
Peperoncino, pomodori, pesce fresco di
Schiavonea, fichi al forno ripieni di noce,
le crucette, il butirro, provola guarnita di
burro, ma anche i cullurielli, pasta di farina
bianca fritta in olio bollente.
Quello a Corigliano è quindi davvero un
viaggio, oltre che nella storia e nell’arte,
nella semplicità dei costumi e nei piaceri
da gustare lentamente. Piacere raro che
vale la pena scoprire.

The historical town of Corellianum dates back to 977
AD, a year when the inhabitants of the area were
driven to take refuge in the hills by Arab incursions
under al-Quasim, the Emir of Palermo. And it is on
a castle-dominated hill that today we find Corigliano Calabro,
in the heart of the Sybaris plain, between the slopes of the Sila
mountain plateau and the waters of the Ionian Sea, a corner of
Calabria where elements of Latin, Greek, Byzantine and Norman
traditions come together in an almost fairytale interweaving.
To visit Corigliano is to pass through different atmospheres,
from the walls parched by the beating sun to the sun-bleached
vegetation almost pervading the air with its essences. The majesty
and elegance of the old town centre - the majolica tilecovered
cupola of the Church of Sant’Antonio with its beautiful
baroque façade - passing along Via Roma, the city’s main
thoroughfare, the historic ambience accompanies you until Piazza
del Popolo, the town’s central gathering point. From here,
ascending from Piazza Compagna you can enjoy the majestic,
awe-inspiring beauty of the façade of the Ducal Castle with its
helical staircase that leads to the Mastio Tower, built in 1073 as
a military post and subsequently converted to a nobleman’s
residence for Count Sanseverino.
But the history of a town is also formed by its
flavours and culinary traditions. Chilli peppers,
tomatoes, fish freshly-caught by fishermen in
the nearby fishing port of Schiavonea, crucette
(oven-roasted figs stuffed with walnuts), butirro
(provola cheese garnished with butter), and also
cullurielli, white flour pasta fried in boiling oil.
Passing through Corigliano really is a voyage
in its own right: not just through history
and art, but also through the simplicity of
customs and the pleasures of slowly savouring
flavours. It’s a rare pleasure that is really
worth discovering.

Fu la malaria che devastò nel V secolo la piana di Sibari a
spingere la gente in fuga sul colle di Rossano Calabro, affacciato
sullo Ionio e diventato da allora una delle più famose
cittadine della fascia jonica cosentina nonché importante
luogo di culto.
Situata su un pendio a picco sul mare, la prima immagine è
quella di una città-fortezza che ebbe, soprattutto durante la
dominazione dell’Impero di Bisanzio, un’importante ruolo
strategico-militare. Passeggiare per Rossano è quindi seguire
una sorta di “percorso bizantino urbano” perché edifici,
chiese e piazze alternano stili nuovi ad antichi. Si passa da
monumenti come la Cattedrale nuova alla Torre dell’Orologio
nella centrale Piazza Steri, si arriva alla bizantina Chiesa
di San Marco o alla Chiesetta della Panaghia di origine greca
ma circondata da un agglomerato di edifici più moderni.
Antico e moderno si uniscono, integrandosi. Si può così visitare
lo stabilimento di produzione della famosa liquirizia
Giorgio Amarelli in un edificio seicentesco affiancato da un
giardino di agrumi ammirando la lavorazione delle classiche
liquirizie nere e lucenti ma anche di quelle profumate
all’arancia o alla viola, dal classico “bianconero” al ricercato
“sassolino dello Jonio”, prodotti grazie ai quali all’azienda
sono stati conferiti premi speciali quali il Premio Minerva
o il Premio Sole 24 Ore, per l’ importante ricerca di integrazione
tra tradizione e futuro. Ma si può anche decidere di ritornare
alla spiritualità e ammirare il Museo Diocesano per
conoscere il prezioso Codex purpureus, un evangelario greco
del VI secolo di origine mediorientale
composto di 188 fogli di pergamena
color porpora, con 15 miniature rappresentanti
scene evangeliche. Oriente e
Occidente furono e sono così tuttora
le due anime di Rossano che San Nilo,
attuale patrono della città, bene rappresentò.•

It was the malaria that devastated the Sybaris plain in the fifth
century that drove the people to take refuge on the hill of Rossano
Calabro, overlooking the Ionian Sea and a place that was to
become one of the most famous citadels of the Cosenza stretch
of the Ionian Sea as well as an important place of worship.
Since that time history and legend have made it a place of
almost ascetic spirituality. Situated on a sheer drop sweeping
down to the sea, the initial impression is of a city-fortress that
held, especially during the domination of the Byzantine Empire,
a major strategic and military role.
To explore Rossano is to follow a sort of “urban Byzantine trail”,
because the buildings, churches and piazzas alternate between
new and ancient styles. You go from monuments like the new
cathedral to the Clock Tower in the central Piazza Steri, to the
Byzantine Church of San Marco or the Panaghia Chapel, of
Greek origin but surrounded by a cluster of more modern buildings.
Ancient and modern are united via a process of integration.
You can, for example, visit the seventeenth-century building
where the Italy’s famous Giorgio Amarelli liquorice is produced,
flanked by a citrus garden, and contemplate the processing of
the liquorice: the classic black, glossy version of course but also
variations flavoured with orange or violet, from the universal
“black and white” to the prized “sassolino dello Jonio” (literally,
Ionian pebble), products which have won the company prestigious
prizes, including the Minerva Prize and the Sole 24 Ore Prize,
for their efforts in integrating tradition with the future. But you
might decide instead to return to the spiritual side of things and
visit the Diocesan Museum and its precious Codex Purpureus,
a sixth century Greek evangelic text
with origins in the Middle East and made up
of 188 sheets of purple-coloured parchment,
with 15 miniatures representing evangelical
scenes. East and west were and still are the two
spirits of Rossano that St Nilus, the modern-day
patron of the city, represented to perfection.•

Sibari (Sybaris). Once one of the most famous Greek
colonies, today this is a welcoming and hospitable town.
It was on the banks of the river Sibari that archaeologists
found the remains of ancient Sybaris, one of the
great cities of Magna Graecia.

parts and reaches a maximum height of 1,928m.

vige l’obbligo di togliere le scarpe e le donne devono usare

da Mille e una Notte, così “la via dell’incenso”
che partiva proprio da qui si intreccia con le avventure di
Sinbad il marinaio e la città perduta di Ubar - la città ottagonale
centro del commercio dell’incenso, della mirra e
dell’oro. Oggi questo paese da fascino schivo si sta lentamente
aprendo al turismo, mantenendo intatto tutto il suo
fascino.

Abu Dhabi - the capital of the United Arab Emirates, situated
on an island surrounded by beautiful beaches and a
coral reef, is simultaneously very modern and closely linked
to the past. Be sure to visit the Qasr al-Hosn (Old Fort) and
the Cultural Foundation, with its exhibitions of local history,
Islamic art and ancient manuscripts. And don’t miss a
trip inland, with a tour of the Al Khatim Desert or an excursion
to the Buraimi oasis.
Finally, Bahrain: the largest of the 33 islands that form the
archipelago of the same name. Make sure you visit the National
Museum, which displays precious exhibits illustrating
7000 years of Bahraini history, and the Al Fatih mosque,
which is also open to non-Muslims (everyone must remove
their shoes and women must don the traditional black burqa
available at the entrance). Sports fans shouldn’t miss the
opportunity to visit the famous Formula One racetrack.
Secret Oman
A land where history and legend merge to create an atmosphere
worthy of the Arabian Nights. Tales of the Incense
Road, which commenced right here, thus mingle with the
adventures of Sinbad the Sailor and the lost city of Ubar,
whose octagonal fortress was once a trading centre for incense,
myrrh and gold. Today this retiring but fascinating
country is slowly opening up to tourism, without losing any
of its allure.

Caribbean recipe.
Antigua - The old stone windmills dotted between the
abandoned sugarcane plantations are the symbol of the
island. It is said that the deep waters of Marigot Bay enabled
the entire British fleet to escape the French warships
by hiding there and covering their masts with palm fronds.

Facciamo la conoscenza del Comandante Paolo
Benini, il più giovane della flotta Costa, non ha
ancora compiuto 40 anni, ma di strada ne ha già
fatta tanta! Un uomo che ama con passione il
suo lavoro. Dalla personalità solare che apprezza il lato
goliardico della vita e l’aspetto più ludico del “fanciullino“
di pascoliana memoria.
Come e quando è iniziata la sua avventura con Costa?
Sono legato al mare da una radicata tradizione familiare:
padre, Capitano di Lungo Corso, zio Capitano di macchina
e nonno operaio presso i cantieri navali di Genova. Dopo
il diploma all’Istituto Nautico Vespucci di Genova, tutto
è avvenuto molto in fretta. Durante il servizio militare ho
visitato l’ “Enrico C.”, ne sono rimasto affascinato e poco
dopo nel settembre 1990 ho iniziato la mia avventura in
Costa Crociere: primo imbarco su Costa Riviera ai Caraibi
con la qualifica di Allievo Ufficiale. L’orgoglio e la fortuna
di appartenere a un mondo speciale è ancora più forte
proprio quest’ anno che ricorre il 60° anniversario della
storia di Costa. Sento di avere contribuito anche io, con i
miei 18 anni di carriera, al successo della Compagnia.

long way! A man who loves his job, Captain
Benini has a cheerful, playful personality and definitely
appreciates the lighter side of life.
How and when did your adventure with Costa begin?
The sea has been in my family for generations: my father
was a liner captain, my uncle was a second engineer officer
and my grandfather worked in the naval shipyards
in Genoa. After I got my diploma at the Vespucci Nautical
Institute in Genoa, everything happened very quickly. During
my national military service I visited an old Costa liner,
the Enrico C, I was fascinated by it and shortly afterwards
in September 1990 I began my career in Costa Crociere: my
first voyage was on the Costa Riviera to the Caribbean, I
served as an apprentice officer. The pride and good fortune
I felt at belonging to such a special world is even stronger
this year, which is Costa’s 60th anniversary. I feel that with
my 18 years of service, I have made my own contribution
to the company’s success.

Qual è il suo itinerario preferito all’interno dell’offerta
Costa?
Mi affascinano molto le crociere a Dubai ed Emirati
Arabi, luoghi che non conosco e che mi piacerebbe visitare.
Le crociere nel Mediterraneo orientale con l’emozionante
partenza da Venezia Grecia e Turchia offrono
un’alternanza di paesaggi splendidi per storia e cultura.
Personalmente cerco sempre di offrire ai nostri Ospiti la
possibilità di apprezzare la navigazione turistica.
Che cosa ci racconta dei Caraibi dove attualmente si
trova a bordo di Costa fortuna?
I Carabi sono un vero Paradiso, Sono particolarmente apprezzate
St. Thomas, St. Marteen, Grand Turk e Catalina.
Le prime abbinano splendide spiagge allo shopping; le
seconde per le caratteristiche immagini caraibiche da
cartolina: spiagge stupende e che dire della silouette
della nave ormeggiata a poche centinaia di metri dalla
costa come sfondo? Impedibile! Vi consiglio anche lo
shopping di prodotti dell’ artigianato locale soprattutto
in Messico, Marocco, Grecia e Turchia.
Se dovesse descrivere Costa fortuna con tre aggettivi
come la definirebbe?
Imponente come un palazzo, affascinante come una bella
donna, estrosa come una creazione di alta moda
Ha aneddoti divertenti o fuori dal comune sulla vita
di bordo da condividere con i lettori?
Devo dire che i più simpatici ricorrono a vari anni addie-
What’s your favourite Costa itinerary?
I’m really interested in cruises to Dubai and the Arab
Emirates; these are places I don’t know and which I’d like
to visit. The cruise in the eastern Mediterranean with the
emotional departure from Venice, and Greece and Turkey
offering views of beautiful landscapes alternating with
history and culture. Personally I always try to offer our
guests the opportunity to appreciate tourist sailing.
What can you tell us about the Caribbean, where you
are now, aboard Costa fortuna?
The Caribbean is truly a paradise. Particularly lovely are
St. Thomas, St. Martin, Grand Turk and Catalina. St. Thomas
and St. Martin combine beach life with shopping, while
Grand Turk and Catalina are the best for postcard Caribbean
views: stupendous beaches and of course who isn’t
stirred by having the backdrop of the silhouette of the
ship at anchor just a few hundred metres offshore? It’s a
once-in-a-lifetime experience! I also recommend shopping
for local crafts, especially in Mexico, Morocco, Greece and
Turkey.
If you had to describe Costa fortuna in three adjectives,
what would they be?
Imposing like a palace, charming like a beautiful woman,
inspired like a creation of high fashion.
Do you have any anecdotes or unusual stories about
life on board that you can share with our readers?
Well, the best ones happened a good few years back and
I still remember them with a smile. In the 1990s, I don’t

tro e li ricordo sempre con piacere. Anni 90, non ricordo
l’anno preciso, tutti pronti per la partenza da Barcellona,
pilota del porto a bordo. Improvvisamente le operazioni
vengono interrotte dalla fuga dalla cabina del gattino
del Comandante: tutti gli ufficiali si prodigano nella ricerca
davanti all’espressione allibita del pilota del porto.
Al tempo non era esplicitamente vietato portare a bordo
un animale domestico,
oggi i regolamenti sono
cambiati. A me sarebbe
piaciuto un pappagallo
colorato, magari parlante
come al tempo dei pirati!
È una battuta, non mi dispiacerebbe
avere un cane
da tenere come compagno
di viaggio. Stessi anni,
ricordo un Ufficiale di Coperta,
imitatore mancato
eccellente nel riprodurre
fedelmente la voce di alcuni
Comandanti. Si divertiva
a dare ordini telefonicamente e faceva muovere
il personale creando equivoci e situazioni imbarazzanti
ma innocue per la sicurezza, ovviamente all’insaputa del
vero Comandante.
Visto che siamo in tema, ha qualche aneddoto divertente
che riguarda gli Ospiti?
L’ultima sera di crociera capita che qualcuno degli Ospiti
più distratti e con poca dimestichezza con il sistema
di chiusura della porta cabina in automatico, mentre è
intento a posizionare il bagaglio fuori della cabina, rimanga
chiuso all’esterno... magari in mutande. Un po’ di
imbarazzo ma alla fine tutto si risolve...
Concludiamo con una piccola “intrusione” nella sua
sfera personale: quali sono i suoi hobby?
Ho la passione per la bicicletta (mountain bike), un hobby
che cerco di coltivare anche a bordo, lo sci. Mi piace
creare momenti di aggregazione con i colleghi come ad
esempio la “pizzata” per vedere sui Rai International
ai Caraibi “La Domenica sportiva” e seguire il Grande
Genoa, la mia squadra del cuore! Quando sono a casa
presto servizio volontario come autista soccorritore sulle
ambulanze. Mi piace fare viaggi on the road in moto.
Anche le mie letture sono piuttosto movimentate infatti
leggo solitamente thriller con una preferenza per Dan
Brown. •

remember exactly what year, we were all ready to leave
port from Barcelona, with the harbour pilot on board
and everything. Suddenly we were interrupted when the
captain’s cat racing out of the cabin: all the officers were
doing their utmost to look for it, and the poor harbour

And do you have any anecdotes about the guests?
On the last evening of a cruise it often happens that one
of the more distracted guests who might not be too familiar
with the automatic cabin door closing system, while
they’re putting their luggage outside the cabin they manage
to get themselves locked out…sometimes in their
underwear. A bit embarrassing but in the end we always
manage to help them out…
Our last question is a little foray into your personal
life, if that’s okay: what are your hobbies?
I love mountain biking, it’s something I try to keep up
when I’m travelling, and skiing. I like getting together
with colleagues, for example we often get together for a
pizza in the Caribbean, to watch the Italian sports on RAI
International on Sundays, and of course I follow Genoa,
my favourite football team! When I’m not travelling I do
volunteer work as an ambulance driver. I like travelling
by motorcycle. Even my choice of reading material is fastmoving
stuff; I usually read thrillers and I have a preference
for Dan Brown. •

è di certo uno dei più sicuri, a patto di scegliere
in maniera oculata il tipo di immobile e il luogo

the safest, as long as you take care in selecting
the type of building and its location. Yes,
“bricks and mortar” is often a valid investment choice,
but you need to properly think through the profitability
of your venture and so, from this point of view, it’s better
to buy in countries that enjoy a series of favourable
conditions, like growing economic prospects, low taxes,
all-year-round tourist traffic, and economic and political
stability. And you also need a strategic geographic
position that combines natural commercial links with an

Claudio Cecchetto, an Italian talent scout, made him one
of the voices on Italy’s Radio Deejay, putting his natural
skills as a raconteur to great advantage and so boosting
him to national fame. After his success
on the radio (this was 1996) he went on
to appear on TV in 1998 with Le Iene,
an irreverent current affairs show. But
since challenges seem to be his stock in
trade, he wasn’t content with hosting
the most popular private radio station
in Italy with his programme Il Volo del
mattino (still on the air; the name of the
programme, literally Morning Flight, is a
pun on his surname), and in 2002 Volo
also tried his skills on the silver screen
in his first film, Casomai (English title: If
by Chance), for which he was shortlisted
for best actor in the David di Donatello

It is to illustrate H. C. Andersen´s fairy tale by the same name.
The Little Mermaid was a donation to the City of Copenhagen from Brewer Carl
Jacobsen and executed by the sculptor Edvard Eriksen. The statue was set up
permanently at Langelinie on 23 August 1913.
The Little Mermaid is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Denmark, which
makes her one of the most photographed women in the world.

According to tradition the first inhabitants of
the island were the Vazimba, a legendary tribe
that inhabits the forests between Morondava
and Moromboe. Over the centuries the mixing
of races from east and west gave rise to 18 ethnic
groups that today look visibly different, have different
building techniques and differ generally in their everyday
customs. This diversity notwithstanding, there is one
element that all these groups have in common: the cult
of ancestors or Razana and its associated traditions. Protecting
the Razana is important both on the material
plane (health and sexual matters, for example), and on
eventi positivi e negativi infatti, vengono interpretati
come risposta degli antenati al comportamento dell'individuo.
Celebrazioni e usanze scandiscono la vita degli
abitanti, tra le più rispettate, sicuramente, i Fady: veri e
propri tabù imposti dagli antenati, alcuni per tutti, ad
esempio quello di non mangiare da sdraiati, altri destinati
solo ad alcune persone come ad esempio le donne
o i componenti di un determinato clan. In contrapposizione
a questi, troviamo i Fomba: obblighi, come quello,
durante i festeggiamenti, di versare come offerta agli
antenati qualche goccia a terra prima di bere.
I Fady e i Fomba secondo la tradizione vanno rispettati
per non incorrere nella collera degli antenati.
La tradizione è molto legata all'ambiente circostante:
tra i numerosi luoghi teatro di cerimonie del culto degli
antenati l'albero sacro, sull'isola di Nosy Be, è certamente
tra i più affascinanti: si tratta di un gigantesco
“ficus Bengalensis” i cui rami e le radici aeree formano
una chioma di oltre 50 metri di diametro sotto la quale
gli abitanti si recano per chiedere protezione ai loro avi,
portando loro delle offerte. Annualmente i rappresentanti
del vicino villaggio celebrano presso l’albero un
rito di commemorazione molto caratteristico, con canti,
doni, spargimento di rhum e ripulitura del terreno intorno
all’arbusto.
Ci sono poi molti altri luoghi sacri, come la foresta di
Bemazava, l’intera montagna dell’Ankaràna, così come
le cascate di Mahavavi o di Andranamamofona. Entrare
in questi spazi è un vero e proprio viaggio nella spiritualità
animista dei malgasci. •

by his or her ancestors. Celebrations and customs govern
the lives of the island’s inhabitants, and certainly among
the most widely-observed are the fady. These are, in a
word, taboos, and they are imposed by ancestors. Some
fady apply to everyone, for example the rule that you
must not eat while lying down, and others only apply to
certain groups, like women or the members of a certain
clan. A counterpoint to the fady are the fomba: these are
obligations, for example before drinking at a celebration
you must spill a few drops on the ground as an offering
to ancestors.
According to tradition, fady and fomba must be observed
so as not to incur the anger of ancestors. Traditions are
closely linked to the surrounding environment. Of the
great number of places that are used for ceremonies of
the ancestor cult, the sacred tree on the island of Nosy Be
is certainly among the most fascinating: it is a gigantic
ficus benghalensis or banyan tree, whose branches and
aerial roots form a leafy canopy over 50 metres (165
feet) in diameter, under which the local people come
with offerings to ask for protection from their forebears.
Every year representatives of the nearby village gather
at the tree to celebrate a memorial rite in traditional
style, with songs, gifts, sprinkling of rum and cleaning of
the earth around the tree.
There are many other sacred places, like the forest of Bemazava,
the entire mountain of Ankaràna, and the waterfalls
of Mahavavi and Andranamamofona. Entering
these spaces is truly a voyage into the animist spirituality
of the Madagascan people. •

Parlare di cucina orientale significa
esplorare una delle arti più antiche del mondo,
dove vengono messi in pratica alcuni dei principi
filosofici della cultura millenaria che la caratterizza. Il rito
delle pietanze da servire a tavola diviene così un momento
di vera e propria creazione estetica, frutto di un equilibrio
meticoloso tra tutti gli ingredienti. Fantasia nel presentare
i piatti, raffinatezza nella cottura delle vivande, la cucina
orientale, nella scelta degli utensili con cui prepara le sue
portate è il simbolo e la manifestazione di una civiltà che
è interessante conoscere nel dettaglio di ogni regione.
La cucina cinese tra queste, che si può gustare a bordo
di Costa Allegra, cerca di ponderare l’uso di ogni ingrediente,
in modo da valorizzare ogni alimento. Utilizzando
il celebre wok, una padella concava, e i cestelli a vapore, le
verdure vengono tagliate trasversalmente alla fibra, taglio
che permette di far agire i condimenti su una maggiore
superficie della vivanda. Le carni, tagliate a pezzi vengono
invece poste a marinare nelle salse per almeno una decina
di minuti. Germogli di soia, zenzero, funghi, porri, semi
di sesamo, cavolo, bambù sono alcuni degli ingredienti del
mondo vegetale con cui vengono preparate la maggior
parte delle zuppe cinesi, ma per quanto riguarda le carni
e il pesce è interessante notare che non esistendo divieti
di origine religiosa: ogni animale può essere gustato. La
cultura che sta dietro a questa tradizione è che essendo la
Cina uno dei paesi più popolosi e in origine molto povero,
ogni alimento doveva essere valorizzato. Scoprire questi
sapori a bordo di Costa Allegra in Oriente è un’ occasione
ulteriore di viaggio e di esplorazione. •
Petto di pollo fritto con semi di sesamo
in salsa di limone
Ingredienti per 4 persone: 150 gr di petto di pollo, 50 gr
di semi di sesamo, un limone (per guarnizione), succo di 4
limoni, 20 gr di zucchero, 3 gr di sale, 2 uova, 100 gr di amido
di mais, 6 cucchiai di olio di semi, 3 cucchiai di miele.
Preparazione: tagliare il petto di pollo a metà ed impanarlo
tipo milanese con amido di mais rosso d’uovo e semi
di sesamo. Scaldare l’olio e friggere il petto di pollo fino a
doratura ottimale (circa 5 minuti). Tagliare il petto di pollo
fritto in 6 pezzi. Per la salsa unire l’amido di mais, l’acqua, il
succo di limone, il sale e lo zucchero con miele. Guarnire a
piacere con fettine di limone.

many of the philosophical principles of the millennia-old
cultures that surround it are put into practice.
The rite of serving meals at the table becomes a time for
true aesthetic creation, the end result of achieving a meticulous
equilibrium between all the ingredients. Imagination
in the presentation of dishes, refinement in cooking
food, the choice of preparation utensils: in all these,
Eastern cuisine is both the symbol and the expression of
a civilisation whose every region offers up a fascinating
world of details to explore.
Of these, Chinese cuisine - which you can enjoy aboard
Costa Allegra - seeks to properly weight the use of every ingredient
in order to get the most from each food. Using the
wok - the concave skillet that has become famous worldwide
- and steaming baskets, vegetables are cut across the
fibres to allow the condiments to reach a greater surface
area. Meats, usually cut into pieces, are left to marinate in
sauces for at least ten minutes. Beansprouts, ginger, mushrooms,
leeks, sesame seeds, cabbage and bamboo are just
some of the vegetable ingredients that are used to prepare
most Chinese soups, and when it comes to meat and fish,
it is interesting to note that there are no religious taboos:
every animal may be eaten. The reason behind this tradition
is that, since China is one of the world’s most populous
countries and most of its people were very poor, every
food had to be used. Discovering these flavours aboard
Costa Allegra in the far East is yet another opportunity
for travel and exploration.•
fried breast of chicken with sesame seeds
in lemon sauce
Ingredients for 4 persons: 150 gr of breast of chicken,
50 gr of sesame seeds, one lemon (for garnish), juice of 4
lemons, 20 gr of sugar, 3 gr of salt, 2 eggs, 100 gr of corn
starch, 6 tbsps of sesame seed oil, 3 tbsps of honey.
Method: cut the chicken breast in half and cover it with a
mixture of corn starch, egg yolk and sesame seeds (as if you
were covering it in breadcrumbs). Heat the oil and fry the
chicken breast until perfectly golden (around 5 minutes).
Cut the fried chicken breast into 6 pieces. For the sauce,
mix the remaining corn starch, water, lemon juice, salt,
sugar and honey. Garnish to taste with slices of lemon.

Air, l’ultima grande invenzione di Casa Mac: è un
computer portatile grande poco più
di un comune foglio A4, quelli che si
usano abitualmente nelle stampanti,
e spesso solo 4 millimetri nella parte
anteriore e 2 centimetri in quella posteriore.
Si può dunque infilare nella
ventiquattrore come se fosse una cartellina
di documenti.
Un prodotto di nicchia perché non ha

busy in company presentations, for techno-maniacs
who find it easier to use and more attractive
than a smart phone and, more generally, for fanatics

MacBook Air, the latest invention from Apple: a laptop
computer not much bigger than an A4
sheet of paper (that’s “printer paper”
for the less technically minded), and
just 4 millimetres thick at the edges
and 2 centimetres at its centre. You
can genuinely slip it into a briefcase
as if it were a document folder.
This is a niche product, because it’s
not capable of the performance required
by those who need a machine
with professional-level specifications,
i.e. tons of memory and a fast processor.
But it certainly does sport a design
that, as ever, conquers with its exceptional
beauty.
Finished in anodized aluminium,
it weighs just 1.3 kg, has a 13.3 inch
screen and a standard-size keyboard
with backlit keys, useful for writing
in dark environments like conference

For those who are not expert technology
users it may be somewhat
