Percorrendo il viale che a Porto Lotti porta ai moli è
probabile che un’importante presenza possa sfuggire,
anche perché un’ancora è percepita qui come
naturale decorazione. Quell’àncora invece, proprio
quella, è molto di più di un “oggetto di arredo”: è la
testimonianza di una tradizione che ha avuto l’intelligenza
e la forza di farsi futuro. Tanto da essere elevata
- per un’intuizione di Mauro Cantini, responsabile della
comunicazione - a simbolo - riprodotto - del Premio
istituito, per la prima volta, nel riuscito “Porto Lotti Superyachts
Captains’ Day”.
A ben guardarla quell’ancora ha una sola “marra”
e non due, come siamo abituati a conoscere, e ha
un suo nome: “ancoressa”. Serviva nelle manovre di
emergenza e - proprio quella - era in dotazione della
prua di un transatlantico, demolito nel Cantiere Lotti,
sul quale è stato edificato il Porto e nel quale si sono
conclusi i cicli di vita di tante navi.
Ecco perché l’“ancoressa” recuperata ora potrà essere
vista sotto la giusta luce, già proposta, non a caso,
come copertina di Plm nel ventennale di Porto Lotti.
At Porto Lotti, given the fact that an anchor, here, is taken
for granted as a decoration, it is quite likely that, going
down the avenue that ends at the docks, you will miss something
that is actually very important. The anchor we are
referring to is much more that an ordinary decoration: it is
the testimony of a tradition sensible and strong enough to
have found its way to the future. So much so that it has
been elevated - on an hunch by Mauro Cantini, the person
in charge of communications - to the status of symbol of
the Prize established, for the first time, in the successful
“Porti Lotti Superyachts Captains’ Day” event. Upon careful
observation, we notice that the anchor has only one
fluke and not two as is common, and that it has a name:
“Ancoressa” (Anchor-ess”). It was used in emergency
operations and it belonged on the prow of a transatlantic
liner, demolished at the Lotti Dockyard where the port has
been built and where many ships’ life cycles have ended.
And that is why the salvaged “Anchor-ess” can now be
looked at from the right perspective, the same perspective
we see, as a matter of fact, on the cover of PLM magazine
on the occasion of Porto Lotti’s twentieth anniversary.

Di yacht di stazza non usuale, cioè di mega e di maxi,
per la pur vasta gamma di Porto Lotti se ne sono visti
attraccare e sostare diversi e importanti negli anni,
eppure i nuovi arrivi, navi a tutti gli effetti, nella Nuova
Darsena hanno suscitato, insieme a un moto di soddisfazione
anche una forte emozione. Soddisfazione
nell’accogliere le prime riposte all’offerta, insieme agli
oltre 520 posti barca, per navi da 60 a 180 metri, con
nessun limite per il pescaggio e con servizi speciali
per gli equipaggi; emozione per il vissuto di una svolta,
di un “nuovo giorno” per un Marina entrato ancora una
volta con largo anticipo nel futuro e che per questo
sta vivendo il suo completamento strutturale non solo
grazie alla nuova Darsena, bella, elegante, funzionale,
protesta sul golfo e forte di un Marina con i servizi
al top - piscina, tennis, beauty farm, ristorante, bar,
supermarket, palestra, cinema, sala convegni, tennis,
eliporto - per tutti i suoi ospiti che, con la nuova Darsena,
vedono aumentare il ruolo di un porto che si rafforza
come cuore del Mediterraneo, all’ormai famoso
punto 44°05’,78 N 09°51’, 54 E.
L’attesa è stata breve insomma e si conta che essa
sia di buon auspicio. Anche perché i primi tre arrivi
hanno un loro particolare significato trattandosi della
Motonave Yersin, proveniente da Montecarlo, del VSY
Stella Maris e poco dopo dell’avveniristico Exuma di
Perini Navi-Picchiotti. La Motonave Yersin, battello insieme
privato e laboratorio di ricerca, è lunga 77 metri
e equipaggiata con tutte le attrezzature per monitorare
l’ecosistema marino e rappresenta, perché li rispecchia,
tutti i valori marittimi espressi dall’etichetta
“La Belle Clesse Superyachts - della quale è primo
ambasciatore - dello Yacht Club di Monaco: la salvaguardia
dell’ambiente e le tecnologie innovative.

Caratteristiche in piena linea peraltro con lo spirito
blu-green di Porto Lotti. “Tra l’avventura e la scienza”
è il motto dell’armatore francese che gode, nel suo
viaggiare, informare, insegnare, dell’appoggio della
Fondazione Principe Alberto II e del Museo Oceanografico,
per far risorgere e tenere vivo lo spirito della
Calipso e ovviamente di Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
L’altro Superyacht, battente bandiera italiana e gioiello
della nostra cantieristica, è pure esso ambasciatore ma
dell’indiscussa leadership nella grande nautica. Stella
Maris è infatti un mega yacht di 72 metri progettato da
Espen Oino e Laurent Giles per VSY di Viareggio che
ridisegna il concetto di lusso e di tradizione sempre più
protesi verso la tecnologia d’avanguardia e l’aerodinamica
performante. L’elemento distintivo di Stella Maris
sono i sei ponti sfalsati, che condividono diverse funzioni
di bordo come gli ascensori interni.
Passeggiando sulle ortogonali composizioni del “pagliolato”
in cotto sulla grande banchina della Nuova
Darsena avverti - d’altronde - immediata la sensazione
di trovarti in un salotto in prima fila sul mare.
E avverti anche la forza e la potenza delle strutture sovradimensionate
per garantire la massima sicurezza
sia in manovra sia in sosta, quanto la ricca dotazione
dei servizi di un Marina di classe internazionale, riconosciuta
come destinazione ottimale per chi naviga

nel Mediterraneo. L’offerta di servizi esclusivi rendono
dunque il Marina ideale luogo di residenza anche per
Superyachts oltre i 60 metri, con 14 ormeggi fino a
80 metri, incluso un posto transito da 180 metri, uno
dei pochi disponibili nel Tirreno. Luogo ideale che è
parte integrante di un porto moderno e funzionale da
vent’anni in attività. In più un’area è riservata all’ormeggio
dei tender sia per manutenzione sia per essere
nella disponibilità della nave madre. Si conferma
così lo standard a 5 stelle, certificato dal RINA “MaRina
Excellence” conseguito nel 2013 con il punteggio
massimo, a testimonianza della qualità dei servizi e la
sostenibilità ambientale delle opere a terra e a mare.

NEW DOCKYARD AT PORTO LOTTI, IN THE HEART
OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
Over the years, unusually large yachts, i.e. mega- and
maxi-yachts, different and important, even for the wide
range of boats at Porto Lotti, have docked and stayed
docked. And yet the newcomers to the New Dock, allaround
ships, have roused intense reactions, together
with feelings of satisfaction. Satisfaction in welcoming the
first answers to the offer, together with more than 520
boat-docking spots, for ships that measure from 60 to
180 metres, without any draught limits and with special
services for the crews.

Thrill on account of a new beginning, a “new day” for a
Marina that has once more ventured into the future well
in advance. Thanks to this, the Marina is undergoing its
structural completion not only thanks to the new beautiful,
elegant, functional Dock jutting out into the Gulf and
proud of a Marina with top services - swimming pool,
tennis courts, a beauty farm, a restaurant, a bar/café, a
supermarket, a gym, a cinema, a convention centre, a
heliport - for all its guests who, with the new Dock, see
their importance increase at a port that establishes itself
as the heart of the Mediterranean, at the by-now famous
44°05’, 78 N 09°51’ 54 E0.
So all things considered, waiting has been for a short
time only and we count on this being a good omen. Also
because the first three newcomers carry upon themselves
a special meaning, since we mean the Yersin motorship,
outbound from Montecarlo; the Stella Maris;
and, right behind, the futuristic Perini Navi-Picchiotti’s
Exuma. The Yersin, a boat that is both private and at the
same time a research lab, is 77 metres long and fitted
with all the equipment necessary for monitoring the sea’s
ecosystem, and it represents, inasmuch as it mirrors
them back, all the maritime values expressed by the label
“La Belle Classe Superyachts” - of which it is the first
ambassador - of Monaco’s Yacht Club: protection of the
environment and innovative technology.
Traits that fully conform, moreover, with the blue-green
spirit of Porto Lotti. “Between adventure and science” is
the motto of the French ship builder/owner? (si parla del
cantiere o del proprietario?) who, in his travels, in his providing
information, in his teaching, enjoys the support of
the Prince Albert II Foundation and of the Oceanographic
Museum, as concerns bringing back and keeping alive
the spirit of the Calipso and, obviously, of Jacques-Yves
Cousteau. The other superyacht, carrying the Italian flag
and gem of our ship-building tradition, is too an ambassador,
this one as concerns the unquestionable leadership
in the area of major yacht-sailing. The Stella Maris is,
in fact, a 72-metre long mega yacht designed by Espen
Oino and Laurent Giles for Viareggio’s VSY, which redefines
the concept of luxury and tradition, ever more
projected toward cutting-edge technology and performing
aerodynamics. The Stella Maris’s distinctive trait
are its six multi-level decks, which have various on-board
functions in common, such as the indoor lifts.
On the other hand, while strolling on the orthogonal arrangements
of the “cotto” tile flooring, on the bigger quay of
the New Dock, you immediately experience the feeling of
being first-row in a large living room facing the sea. And
you also perceive the strength, the power of the sizable
structures that guarantee maximum safety both while sailing
and while on at rest, as well as the rich outfit of services
of a world-class Marina, renowned as an outstanding
destination for those sailing the Mediterranean. The range
of exclusive services make this Marina an ideal point of
residence even for Superyachts over 60 metres in length,
with 14 docks for boat measuring up to 80 metres, including
a 180-metre transit area, one of the very few available
in the Tyrrhenian Sea. An ideal spot that is an integral part
of a port that is modern and functional, operative for the
past twenty years. Furthermore, there is an area reserved
for mooring tenders, both for maintenance purposes and
for purposes of availability to the mother ship. The 5-star
level is thus confirmed, certified by RINA’s “MaRina Excellence”

Sì, la ricorderanno sicuramente la giornata trascorsa
a Porto Lotti i capitani e gli ufficiali di bordo dei Superyacht
che hanno partecipato a “PORTO LOTTI
SUPERYACHTS CAPTAINS’ DAY”, l’esclusivo meeting
tecnico, tutto in lingua inglese, dedicato a loro e alla
loro attività professionale. E saranno in tanti a ricordarlo
perché in tanti si sono ritrovati, capitani e ufficiali, italiani
ma in prevalenza stranieri, a dare vita e senso alla
prima edizione di un evento che vuole rappresentare e
che, come si è dimostrato, rappresenta l’opportunità,
per chi naviga per professione, di aggiornare le conoscenze,
in questo caso riguardo alle previsioni meteomarine,
grazie al corso di formazione tecnica condotto
dai meteorologi di Navimeteo, centro specializzato per
l’informazione meteo marina e coordinato da Gianfranco
Meggiorin, anima e cervello del centro. Sono state
in particolare approfondite le conoscenze sulle dinamiche
delle masse d’aria, sui cambiamenti climatici e sullo
scioglimento dei ghiacci che aprono una nuova via
- strategica - di comunicazione: il mitico passaggio a
Nord Ovest, attraverso i canali a Nord del Canada.
Il Porto Lotti Captains’ Day è stata e sarà dunque una
straordinaria occasione di incontro fra i professionisti
del settore su temi di grande interesse, in continua
evoluzione, tanto è vero che i lavori sono stati seguiti,
anche da manager di cantieri, broker e enti certificatori,
da Camper&Nicholsons a Bureau Veritas Italia, da
Berth for Yacht a DTY Yacht Transport.
Particolarmente apprezzato è stato l’abbinamento di
un premio speciale a un Capitano che si è particolarmente
distinto nella sua carriera. Premio assegnato
nella prima edizione a Fabio Boccardi, comandante di
origini sarzanesi, che lo ha ricevuto in collegamento
audio-video, mentre stava navigando nello Stretto di
Messina, al comando di un prestigioso 60 m.
Come è stata particolarmente apprezzata l’ospitalità da
parte dello staff guidato da Andrea Lotti, apprezzamento
evidente nei calorosi ringraziamenti di fine giornata
al momento del congedo, dopo che capitani e ufficiali
erano rientrati nel salone dei congressi da una visita alla
Nuova Darsena per Superyacht nella quale Porto Lotti è
pronto ad ospitare armatori, capitani ed equipaggi assicurando
il massimo dell’assistenza e della funzionalità.
Una cinquantina di comandanti si sono fatti così un’idea,
non solo sugli ormeggi ma anche sui servizi, sulle
bellezze di un golfo sicuro e sulla posizione baricentrica
strategica rispetto alle grandi vie di comunicazione,
alle città e agli aeroporti. E di sicuro il messaggio è
stato che il Golfo della Spezia è ideale per l’ospitalità
dei maxi yacht.

Yes, the Superyacht captains and officers that took
part in the “PORTO LOTTI SUPERYACHTS CAPTAINS’
DAY” will surely remember it. An exclusive technical
meeting dedicated to their professions, entirely held
in English. And many others will remember it, because
many others were there (officers, etc.), Italians but
mostly foreigners, giving life and sense to the first edition
of an event that intends to represent and that, as
has been seen, does represent the opportunity, for
those who sail as a profession, to bring knowledge up
to date, in this particular case regarding sea weather
forecasts, thanks to the technical course held by the
meteorologists of Navimeteo, a centre specialised in
sea weather information and run by Gianfranco Meggiorin,
mind and soul of the centre. Specific attention
was lavished on the topics of air-mass dynamics, climate
change and the melting of polar ice, which open
up a new, strategic channel of communication: the
much renowned Northwest passage, through channels
north of Canada.
Porto Lotti Captain’s Day was and will continue to be
an extraordinary meeting platform for sector-related
professionals in which to talk about topics of great
interest and in ongoing evolution. Indeed, the talks
have been attended by dockyard managers, brokers
and certifying organizations, from Camper&Nicholson
to Bureau Veritas Italia, from Berth for Yacht to DTY
Yacht Transport.
Attendees especially liked the conferment of a special
award to a captain who has particularly distinguished
himself in his career: Fabio Boccardi, hailing from Sarzana,
in Liguria, who received the award via teleconference
while sailing in the Strait of Messina, at the helm
of a prestigious 60-metre-long ship.
Likewise appreciated was the hospitality given by the
staff headed by Andrea Lotti, an appreciation that
was particularly evident in the warm thanksgiving at
the end of the day, after captains and officers had
returned to the convention hall from a visit to the superyachts’
New Dockyard, where Porto Lotti is ready
to welcome builders, captains and crews, ensuring
maximum assistance and efficiency.
Some fifty captains had, therefore, a chance to get to
know the moorings as well as the services, the beauties
of a safe Gulf and its crucial, strategic position as
far as important routes, cities and airports are concerned.
One thing is clear to everyone: the La Spezia Gulf
is ideal for maxi yachts in terms of hospitality.

COMANDANTE
“Pratico questa professione per più di vent’anni, con
passione, onestà e qualità, guadagnando una buona
reputazione internazionale”. Così parla Gino Battaglia, uno
dei più famosi comandanti di yacht: “Noi italiani creiamo a
bordo un’atmosfera unica di armonia per gli ospiti, è uno
dei nostri punti di forza. E sono molte le opportunità per la
maggior apertura verso gli equipaggi italiani”.
Dai punti di forza ai punti deboli?
“La conoscenza dell’inglese e il nostro paese che non
ci aiuta a promuovere il turismo di yachting.
Gli ospiti dicono: un bel paese, ricco di arte, moda e
cultura ma inaffidabile per il resto”.
Che cosa possiamo fare per i nostri giovani?
“Dato che mio figlio Manuel è laureato nautico dico che
quasi nessun Capitano si assume la responsabilità
di tenere a bordo un ragazzo sotto i 18 anni, ma è
sbagliato, è lì che li facciamo innamorare del mare”.
Quali le qualità di un buon Comandante?
“Ho 38 anni di esperienza, con 2.647 giorni di charter,
26 traversate nell’Atlantico.
Premiato nel 2003 Best Charter Captain quando
l’esclusiva era di Capitani stranieri.
Un buon Comandante deve mantenere in rotta yacht
e l’equipaggio”.

Cosa si dice dei Comandanti italiani all’estero?
“Ci siamo liberati di pregiudizi. Non abbiamo però
ancora la credibilità degli inglesi che, come disse
Agnelli, sono meno corruttibili”.
Quali sono i migliori porti al mondo per lo yachting?
E quali sono i servizi da importare in Italia?
“In Italia abbiamo porti famosi a livello mondiale.
Noi abbiamo esportato un servizio di alta qualità.
Dovremmo importare lo snellimento delle pratiche”.
A CAPTAIN’S COMMENTS
“With passion, honesty and quality, I have been in this
profession for more than twenty years, making a good
international reputation for myself”. Thus speaks Gino
Battaglia, one of the best-known yacht captains: “We
Italians create a unique, harmonious atmosphere on
board, much appreciated by guests; this one of our key
strengths. And there are many opportunities of greater
exposure for Italian crews”.
What are Italy’s weaknesses and strengths?
“The limited knowledge of English in our country doe-
sn’t help us promote yachting tourism.
Visitors say: Italy is a beautiful country, rich in art,
fashion and culture, but not dependable otherwise”.
What can we do for our young individuals?
My son Manuel has a degree in navigation and I know
that almost no captain takes the responsibility of having
a man under eighteen on board; but this is wrong, as it
is right there and then that you fall in love with the sea”.
Which are the qualities that a good captain must have?

La cavalcata del Cavallino Rosso ha sublimato con
la sosta in porto, una splendida giornata di maggio a
Porto Lotti; la Marina spezzina ha “intercettato” così,
uno degli eventi del 70° anniversario della casa modenese,
il Raduno dei Top Clients italiani delle Ferrari.
La roboante carovana del GT Tour, composta da ben
trentacinque auto super speciali, si è schierata sui
moli colorandoli di rosso “corsa”.
Presenti anche alcune repliche delle Ferrari che hanno
segnato varie epoche, comprese auto, uniche, a tiratura
limitatissima.
La tappa di Porto Lotti è stata, per la location, un
momento speciale nello straordinario scenario di una
carovana di uno spessore tecnico e storico che raramente
si ha occasione di ammirare in un quadro di
insieme: questo spettacolo, per un giorno, ha trasformato
e, sicuramente sublimato, con la sua eleganza e
con la sua potenza, il panorama del Golfo già di per se
stesso di una bellezza affascinante.
The cavalcade of the Cavallino Rosso - the “Red Horsey”
- has sublimated with its port-call at Porto Lotti a
splendid May day.
La Spezia navy has thus “intercepted” one of the
events of the 70 th anniversary of the Modena carmaker,
the Reunion of Ferrari’s Top Italian Clients. The GT
Tour’s booming caravan, made up of thirty-five superspecial
automobiles, drew up on the docks, colouring
them car-race red.
On site were also a few replicas of Ferraris that have
left a mark on different epochs, including special cars
that are unique and limited-edition.
The stop at Porto Lotti has been, for this location, a special
moment in the extraordinary scenario of a caravan with
technical and historic value such as one has rarely the opportunity
to admire within the context of an overall picture:
this spectacle has, for one day, transformed and certainly
sublimated, with its elegance and power, the panorama of
a gulf that already possesses a fascinating beauty.

Uguali a se stesse, eppure sempre diverse e quindi
nuove: per questo le Terre di Canossa continuano a
mietere successi complice l’appeal delle contrade
italiche che continuano ad affascinare gli stranieri
nel nostro sempre più International Classic Car
Challenge che è tradizione ospitare per più di una
affinità con la linea editoriale di Plm.
E bastano davvero i numeri della edizione 2017, la
settima della serie, per dare veste all’estetica delle
eleganti immagini del tour lungo le incantevoli
strade dell’Emilia, della Liguria e della Toscana con
l’inconfondibile miscela di sport, di passione, di paesaggi,
di cultura e di serate indimenticabili.
Quest’anno sono stati 111 gli equipaggi di 14 nazioni
alla partenza, in rappresentanza di 27 case
automobilistiche e di 30 scuderie.
Sono sfilate 45 auto italiane, 42 inglesi, 22 tedesche
e a seguire francesi e americane. Ma, particolarità
nella particolarità, Terre di Canossa si sono
tinte di più di “rosa” con il 33 per cento di partecipanti
donne, colore che si aggiunge al canonico
“verde” dell’attenzione all’ambiente.

host the increasingly more international International Car
Challenge, which has become a tradition for us to host
on account of various affinities with PLM’s editorial policy.
Canossa Events, leader in the organization of high-level
driving events, reinforces its connection with the fascinating
La Spezia Gulf, bringing wonderful vintage cars and
fabulous modern Ferraris to panoramic roads and picturesque
piazzas. The figures of the 2017 edition alone (the
seventh) are enough to give an idea of the elegant views
that the tour afforded along the enchanting roads of Emilia,
Liguria and Tuscany, with its unmistakable mixture of
sports, passion, landscape, culture and unforgettable evening
events. This year at the kick-off there were 111 crews
from 14 different countries, representing 27 car makers and
30 teams. 45 Italian cars paraded along, in addition to 42
British cars, 22 German cars, plus French and American
automobiles. And, wonder of wonders, Terre di Canossa
2017 went “pink” with its 33% of female participants, a colour
that goes to join the traditional green that stands for
environmental awareness.

Sì, missione compiuta. Viareggio è riuscita a stupirci e
a stupire nelle quattro intense giornate di metà maggio
con il primo Versilia Yachting Rendez-Vous da vera capitale
mondiale della nautica di eccellenza nell’esaltazione
di uno stile e di una capacità imprenditoriale senza pari
nel creare capolavori. Creatività e fantasia insieme alla
maestria si sono succeduti nell’originalità dei 72 yachts
ormeggiati in darsena, “applauditi” da oltre 18mila visitatori,
dei quali il dieci per cento proveniente da Spagna,
Francia, Germania, Olanda e Inghilterra e il 3 percento da
Usa, Cina, Russia, Sudamerica e Emirati Arabi Uniti. Presenti
ovviamente i tre più importanti costruttori di grandi
yacht, Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti e Sanlorenzo, secondo la
classifica del “Global Order Book 2017”, grande spazio è
stato dato alle 160 case costruttrici di componenti, motori,
sviluppatori di tecnologie, di tender innovativi, cantieri
di refit, Marina turistici, servizi nautici, concentrate in
tre aree tematiche: Tender & Toys, Superyacht Marina
e Superyacht Equipment and Component. Attenzioni e
stupori sono andati, in darsena, all’ammiraglia della prima
edizione, il superyacht Atlante, mentre la regina a vela è
stata Aquarius, un 46 metri di Perini Navi, leader mondiale
di yacht a vela di lusso. Per Lamberto Tacoli, presidente
di Nautica Italiana, l’evento dedicato all’alto di gamma ha
testimoniato che “l’industria nautica italiana è viva, coraggiosa,
desiderosa di fare squadra per competere come
sistema a livello mondiale”. Missione compiuta anche per
il concetto vincente “di coinvolgere in modo trasversale
marchi e glamour del Made in Italy”. Tutto bello insomma,
premessa di nuovi successi. C’è un “però” che non
possiamo ignorare, proprio per un futuro a tutto tondo.
C’è stata infatti una nota stonata. Non all’interno della manifestazione
ma all’esterno. Ci riferiamo alla distribuzione
senza troppe cortesie (che i visitatori a Viareggio, italiani
e stranieri, avrebbero gradito, anzi avrebbero meritato),
di sanzioni stradali per le automobili attorno alla location
della rassegna. È stato un via vai di “colpiti” che francamente
si sarebbe potuto evitare. E si deve, tenendo
a mente che la logistica esterna è parte integrante della
rassegna. Noi ci contiamo.

L’ultima annotazione ci riguarda perché anche i Porti
della Liguria hanno saputo dare una immagine di alta
gamma ai super yacht schierando, unito, tutto il loro
potenziale in modo compatto e strutturato sotto la
denominazione Liguria for yachting. E ancora una volta
Porto Lotti è riuscito a stupire e a giocare un ruolo
trainante in questa vetrina planetaria.

OF LIGURIA’S PORTS
The last notation concerns us also because Ligurian
ports have been able to assign a high-end image to superyachts,
gathering all their potential in a compact, structured
manner under the name Liguria for Yachting. And,
once more, Porto Lotti has succeeded in astonishing us
and in playing an important role in this world-level scene.
GREAT YACHTING,
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Yes, mission accomplished. Viareggio did a great job at
impressing us during the four intense days in mid-May
with the first ever Yachting Rendez-Vous at Versilia as a
true world capital of top-notch yachting industry, putting
on the spotlight a style and an entrepreneurial capacity
without equal where the creation of masterpieces is concerned.
Creativity and imagination together with dexterous
mastery have all come together in the originality of
the 72 docked yachts, “applauded” by more than 18,000
visitors, of which ten percent came from Spain, France,
Germany, the Netherlands and England and three percent
from the USA, China, Russia, South America and
the United Arab Emirates. Naturally, the three most important
builders of large yachts took part in the event:
Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti and Sanlorenzo, according to the
list in 2017’s Global Order Book. Ample room was given
to the 160 builders of components and engines, developers
of technology and innovative tenders, refitting yards,
tourist marinas and navigation services, grouped in three
areas: Tenders & Toys, Superyacht Marinas, and Superyacht
Equipment and Components. In the dockyards,
focus and a sense of wonder have both been lavished
upon the first-edition flagship, the Atlante superyacht,
while the sailing queen was certainly Aquarius, created
by Perini Navi, world leader in the area of luxury sailing
yachts. For Lamberto Tacoli, president of Nautica Italiana,
this event, dedicated to high-end boats, has borne
witness to the fact that “the Italian nautical industry is alive
and kicking, brave and desirous of teaming up in order to
compete on a global level”. Mission accomplished also
for the winning concept of “getting Made in Italy’s brands
and glamour across the spectrum”. Therefore, everything
is hunky dory, a premise of upcoming success. However,
there is one “but” that we cannot ignore, precisely on account
of the necessity of an all-around positive future to
come. There was, as a matter of fact, one note very much
out of tune. Not within the event, but just outside it. We
are referring to the ruthless distribution, without too many
hints of courtesy (which the visitors to Viareggio, both
Italian and foreign, would have appreciated very much
or, rather, would have deserved), of traffic and parking
fines around the event’s area. The proliferation of which,
frankly, could very well have been avoided (and had to),
given the fact that external logistics are an integral part
of the manifestation. We are counting on this issue being
given the proper attention.

E per celebrare la bellezza, l’audacia delle innovazioni,
la creatività, l’ingegno e soprattutto il lavoro, senza il
quale i sogni non si realizzano, come ha commentato
Lia Riva, è stato istituito, su iniziativa della famiglia
Riva insieme a Nautica Italiana, il Premio Carlo Riva,
alla memoria del Maestro dell’Industria Nautica
scomparso il 10 aprile. Il premio è stato presentato,
in occasione della splendida cena di gala al Gran
Teatro Giacomo Puccini a Torre del Lago, con
Madrina della serata Natasha Stefanenko, al fianco
di Lia e Pia Riva. Assegnato a Paolo Vitelli, fondatore
e presidente di Azimut Benedetti, gli è stato
consegnato, tra gli applausi, dal presidente della
Fondazione Altagamma Andrea Illy e Alberto Galassi
ad di Ferretti Group. “Dare il Premio Carlo Riva a una
figura come Paolo Vitelli è stato un onore grandissimo
- sono le parole di Lamberto Tacoli - perché lui più di
ogni altro, dagli esordi ha saputo dare valore e merito
all’industria nautica italiana nel mondo”.

innovations, the creativity, the genius and, above all, the
work without which dreams do not come true (as commented
on by Lia Riva) that the Carlo Riva Award has
been created upon the initiative of the Riva family together
with the nautical industry, in memory of the nautical
industry’s Master, deceased this past 10 April. The
award was introduced on occasion of the splendid gala
dinner at Torre del Lago’s Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini,
in which Natasha Stefanenko was the event’s sponsor
alongside Lia and Pia Riva. It was awarded in the midst
of much applause to Paolo Vitelli, founder and president
of Azimut-Benedetti, by the president of Fondazione
Altagamma Andrea Illy and by Alberto Ferretti, Ferretti
Group’s CEO. “To give the Carlo Riva Award to the likes
of Paolo Vitelli is a great honour,” said Lamberto Tacoli,
“because he more than anyone, from the very beginning,
has been able to confer value and merit in the eyes of the
world to the Italian nautical industry.

È evidente che la scelta deve avvenire già in fase progettuale
dello yacht”.

there are both a drip system and a nebulization one. Barriers
protect the garden during navigation and go down during

techniques, the know-how of landscape designers,
agronomists and engineers, we have come up with a highly
qualified team that makes places that convey strong emotions
possible. It is obvious that the choice has to be made early on
during the design of the yacht”.

“Quando sono solo sogno all’orizzonte e mancan le parole...”
così inizia una delle più celebri arie del Maestro
Andrea Bocelli, appassionato navigante e amante del
mare: quelle “parole” che vengono a mancare, forse
per l’emozione di fronte allo spettacolo della natura,
abbiamo provato a scoprirle con un’intervista esclusiva
per i lettori di PLM.
Maestro, ci racconti il suo rapporto con il mare e la navigazione.
Amo il mare, sono incantato dalla sua bellezza ed
anche dai suoi misteri. È, il mare, luogo di libertà e di
straordinari silenzi, è un elemento che da sempre avvince
l’uomo, sollecitandone il coraggio e la sete di conoscenza.
Le imbarcazioni, frutto dell’ingegno umano,
ben rappresentano quell’equilibrio, delicato ma profondo,
tra noi inquilini del mondo e le immense vastità acquee.
Più prosaicamente, il mare è anche il luogo in cui
mi riposo, in cui ritrovo le energie, in cui talvolta studio
(ho un pianoforte a bordo), ed in cui amo trascorrere
più tempo possibile, insieme alla mia famiglia ed agli
amici più cari.
Quando è nata questa passione?
Da bambino, nel corso delle vacanze estive presso la riviera
toscana, ho avuto quelle prime esperienze di brevi
uscite in mare che, ritengo, siano state la scintilla della
mia passione, espressa poi, appieno, in epoca adulta.
Mio padre possedeva un gommone (di cinque o sei
metri) ed organizzava con frequenza quasi quotidiana
piccole escursioni che coinvolgevano me e mio fratello
Alberto. Ricordo il nostro entusiasmo, per le incombenze
che il babbo ci dava: era nostro compito infatti
recuperare il motore del gommone, nella cabina dello
stabilimento balneare, per portarlo sulla battigia... Poi,
a remi, oltrepassavamo le boe ed infine avviavamo il
motore ed incominciava l’avventura.
Perché ha scelto la navigazione a motore e non a vela?
Chi ama andare per mare fatalmente desidera molte
imbarcazioni, sia a motore che a vela, sia di piccole che
di grandi dimensioni. Essendo un sogno impraticabile,
sono poi le esigenze della vita, come è naturale che
sia, ad indirizzare le scelte. Molti anni fa ho posseduto

un gommone di una decina di metri, assai agile e veloce
ma certo non adatto a lunghi percorsi ed a lunghi
soggiorni. Ho optato poi per barche più lente ma più
confortevoli, tali da consentirmi di non scendere a terra,
anche per molti giorni...
Ci racconta la sua barca?
Una barca è molto simile ad una casa, assomiglia dunque
a chi l’abita! Alla mia ho messo il nome “Libertas”,
per ricordare (a me per primo) quanto tale valore sia
cruciale per tutti. È un mezzo che, grazie alla distribuzione
degli spazi, permette la gioia della confidenza
ma al contempo rispetta le necessità di privacy, offre
la possibilità di socializzare in completo relax ma anche
l’applicazione nello studio e la concentrazione. Si tratta
di una barca che ho voluto personalizzare, secondo le
priorità e le esigenze della famiglia, dunque: sicurezza,
accoglienza, silenziosità, confort (che non significa lusso,
che non è sfarzo fine a se stesso). Un luogo ospitale,
che adotta soluzioni pratiche ed intelligenti, che sia
in grado di accompagnarci in sicurezza e di custodire i
nostri sonni e l’intimità familiare.
Quanto tempo riesce a passare a bordo in un anno?
Meno di quanto vorrei. I miei impegni di lavoro mi tengono
lontano dall’Italia per molti mesi l’anno; anche nel
periodo estivo, l’agenda professionale non si interrompe
che per pochi giorni. Talvolta, se un concerto o una

registrazione si svolge in una località del mediterraneo,
ne approfitto per raggiungerla via mare.
Quali sono le mete predilette?
L’Italia tutta è meravigliosa, ed è inoltre in posizione
strategica, per poter raggiungere facilmente veri e propri
paradisi terrestri, nel Mediterraneo. A partire dall’arcipelago
toscano e dalle coste liguri...
Conosce il Golfo della Spezia e le sue gemme, Porto
Venere, Le Grazie, San Terenzo, Lerici, Tellaro...
Direi che è il segmento di costa che meglio conosciamo.
Sono località alle quali (io per primo, ma anche mia
moglie e i miei figli) siamo molto affezionati, zone che
frequentiamo con assiduità e grande piacere. Probabilmente
Porto Venere è la più amata dalla famiglia Bocelli,
ma è difficile azzardare una classifica, quando si
parla di simili gioielli.
...e di Porto Lotti ha mai sentito parlare? È una storia di
successo di un imprenditore che per primo ha avuto
la visione di una trasformazione turistica di una costa
allora dedicata solo al militare e alle demolizioni navali:
oggi lui non c’è più ma la famiglia ha portato avanti
l’impresa...
Naturalmente conosco Porto Lotti e ritengo sia il frutto
felice di un progetto ambizioso: una bella realtà, strategica
quanto a posizione, vivace ed accogliente, strutturata
nella priorità del rispetto per il mare.

Ho visitato Porto Lotti in più occasioni e ricordo anche

provare nuove imbarcazioni...
Com’è la sua vita a bordo, fuga da tutti o momento di
relazioni impossibili a terra? Ci racconta un’esperienza
in mare che l’ha segnata e che non dimentica.
La mia vita a bordo non è dissimile da quella che trascorro
quando sono a casa: alterno studio e relax, momenti
dedicati alla lettura ad occasioni conviviali, insieme alla
mia famiglia e, quando possibile, agli amici. Molte, se
non tutte le vacanze trascorse in mare insieme ai miei
figli, le ricordo con grande piacere. Quanto ad una traversata
che mi ha segnato, posso citare il percorso che
ho affrontato per arrivare a Valencia (dove mi attendeva
la registrazione della “Manon Lescaut”), attraversando il
Golfo del Leone, di notte, in piena burrasca... Un’esperienza
comunque emozionante e tutto sommato positiva,
anche se, a dir il vero, sul momento ero di tutt’altro avviso!

This is the opening of one of the most famous songs in
the repertoire of Andrea Bocelli, keen sailor and lover of
the sea: we set out to discover exactly which “words” fail,
perhaps in response to the overwhelming beauty and
wonder of nature, in an exclusive interview for PLM readers.
Maestro, tell us about your relationship with the
sea and sailing.
I love the sea, I’m spellbound by its beauty and also by
its mysteries. The sea is a place of freedom and amazing
silences, an element that has fascinated men since
time immemorial, inspiring their courage and thirst for
knowledge. Boats, the work of human ingenuity, are an
excellent expression of the fragile but profound balance
between us, the tenants of the world, and the vast, watery
immensities. To put it in more prosaic terms, the sea
is where I relax, recharge my batteries and sometimes
work (I have a piano on board), and where I like to spend

as much time as I can, with my family and close friends.
When did this love of the sea begin?
It was as a child, during summer holidays on the Tuscan
coast, that I went on my first, short, trips out to sea, and
I think they sowed the seed of this passion, which came
to fruition when I was an adult. My father had a rubber
inflatable boat (five or six metres long) and often used to
organise little daily outings involving my brother Alberto
and me. I remember how keen we were, how we loved
the jobs our Dad used to give us: we had to go and get
the boat’s engine from our beach hut and take it down
to the shoreline... Then we had to row past the buoys
around the bathing area, and finally start the engine - and
our adventure began.
Why did you choose a motor and not a sailing yacht?
Anyone who loves seafaring would like to own a lot of
boats, both motor and sailing craft, large and small. Since
this dream is not feasible, in the end, naturally, practical
considerations predominate. Many years ago I used to
own an inflatable about ten metres long. It was very quick
and responsive, but of course it was no good for long
trips or long times at sea. So then I switched to slower but
more comfortable craft, which would let me spend even
long periods without ever putting a foot on land...
Can you tell us about your boat?
A boat is very much like a house, so it resembles its owner!
I’ve called mine “Libertas”, as a reminder (to myself,
first and foremost) how crucial this value is for everyone.
Its layout is designed to provide for the joy of sharing
time but also to cover the need for privacy; it enables me
to socialise and wind down, but also to work hard and
concentrate. I set out to customise it to suit my family’s
priorities and needs: safety, hospitality, quiet and comfort
(which does not mean luxury and is not the same thing as
richness for its own sake). A hospitable place, with practical,
intelligent solutions, able to carry us in safety and give
us peace and quiet at night and seclusion for our family
life during the day.
How long do you manage to spend on board each year?
Not as long as I’d like. I’m away from Italy for many
months of the year for work, even during the summer;
breaks in my professional schedule never last more than
a few days. Sometimes, if a concert or recording session
is in a place on the Mediterranean, I take the opportunity
to travel there by sea.
What are your favourite destinations?
All Italy is wonderful, and it’s also strategically located for

Starting from the Tuscan archipelago and the
Ligurian coast...
Do you know the Gulf of La Spezia and its gems - Porto
Venere, Le Grazie, San Terenzo, Lerici, Tellaro...?
I would say it’s the stretch of coast we know best. They
are places we (first of all myself, but also my wife and
children) are very fond of, areas we visit often and where
we love to go. Porto Venere is probably the Bocelli family’s
favourite, but it’s difficult to choose between such
lovely spots.
...and have you ever heard of Porto Lotti? It’s a success
story, achieved by an entrepreneur who was the first to
see the potential for tourism of a shoreline which was
then the exclusive preserve of military bases and shipbreaking
yards: he’s no longer with us but his family have
carried the project forward...
Of course I know Porto Lotti, and I see it as the fine outcome
of an ambitious plan: a fantastic marina, strategically
located, lively and comfortable, organised with marine protection
as a top priority. I’ve visited Porto Lotti several times,
and I also remember I had a great time, since I was able to
be acquainted with and try out new craft on the spot...
What’s your life on board like? Do you try to get away
from everyone or do you take the opportunity for socialisation
you can’t manage on land? Tell us about one experience
at sea you’ll never forget.
My life on board is quite similar to my life at home: I alternate
work and relaxation, time spent reading and time
spent with others, with my family and, when I can, with my
friends. I have very happy memories of many, if not all, of
my holidays at sea with my children. One voyage I won’t
forget was when I had to get to Valencia to record “Manon
Lescaut”, which meant crossing the Gulf of Lion by night,
in a storm... It was an exciting experience and in the end
a positive one, although at the time I didn’t see it like that!

My Song non è solo l’ultimo super yacht ad alte prestazioni
e di grande versatilità presentato dalla Batic
Yachts, è una proposta che raccoglie un sacco di novità.
Trasuda innovazione. Progetto curato dalla Reichel/Pugh
con sede a San Diego, in collaborazione
con la Gurit per alcune componenti, per la parte architettonica
e ingegneristica, Nauta Design per il concept
e design di interni ed esterni, gestione progetto realizzata
da Nigel Ingram della MCM. Il My Song è stato
presentato lo scorso anno con la giusta tempistica e
si prepara quindi ad una stagione molto intensa nel
Mediterraneo. La prua a piombo e le ampie zone di
poppa hanno abbandonato le linee da yacht da competizione
per ottenere una navigazione confortevole
e stabile sia in gara che nel diporto. Con uno scafo
rigido in composito leggero di carbonio/Corecell e paratie
con anima in Nomex, il My Song nasce da uno
stampo diviso in due per una maggiore accuratezza
e velocità di costruzione. Velocità di crociera di 16,6
nodi e quasi 30 nodi in planata in modalità di gara
sono i traguardi che alla Reichel/Pugh volevano raggiungere
quando hanno definito questo modello uno
degli yacht più veloci del suo tipo a livello mondiale.
Caratteristica fondamentale: la notevole ampiezza
della prua, che permette lo sviluppo di un’area di poppa
spaziosa per il relax al sole e l’intrattenimento.
Gli interni possono ospitare da 6 a 9 persone compreso
l’armatore.

My Song is not only the latest high performance, genuine
multi-role super sailing yacht to be launched by Baltic
Yachts, but she also benefits from a plethora of new
ideas. She oozes innovation. With naval architecture and
engineering by San Diego-based Reichel/Pugh (with the
collaboration of Gurit on some components), stunning
interior, exterior and conceptual design by Nauta Design
and project management by Nigel Ingram of MCM,
My Song was launched on time last year and is planning
a busy Mediterranean season. My Song’s plumb
stem and wide after sections have evolved from grand
prix maxi racer shapes to provide a fast, stable, comfortable
ride whether racing or cruising.Based on a stiff,
lightweight carbon/Corecell composite hull with Nomex
cored bulkheads throughout, Baltic 130 My Song was
built in a split hull mould enabling more accuracy and
a faster build-time. Her average cruising speed of 16.5
knots and almost 30 knots when planing in full competitive
mode are Reichel/Pugh’s velocity prediction figures
indicating she will be one of the fastest yachts of her type
in the world. A key design feature on deck is the generously
wide stern, creating a large after deck area for sun
bathing and relaxing. The interior provides accommodation
for six to nine guests including the owner.

Il nuovo Custom Range di OTAM, 35 metri per una
larghezza di 7,80 metri, si aggiudica in meno di cinque
mesi i due più ambiti riconoscimenti del mercato dei
superyacht, ricevendo a febbraio lo ShowBoats Design
Awards ed in maggio uno degli World Superyacht
Awards 2017. Questo yacht traghetta il marchio ligure,
leader nella costruzione di yacht con eccezionali qualità
marine e performance sportive, nel settore delle
navette semi-dislocanti: Gipsy ha oltre 2000 miglia di
autonomia e una velocità massima di 20 nodi.
Il progetto, firmato da Tommaso Spadolini, colpisce per
lo stile moderno degli interni che si raccorda perfettamente
alle sue linee esterne e utilizza l’alluminio per la
massima flessibilità in termini di customizzazione. L’imbarcazione
è stata ideata su misura, per soddisfare le
esigenze specifiche di un armatore italiano, alla ricerca
di un superyacht totalmente custom in alluminio a tre
ponti. Il main deck è dedicato al relax e allo svago degli

Il bello e il ben fatto della Nautica ha avuto la sua
ambasciatrice. Blasonata per merito e talento.
È stata scelta Barbara Amerio, proprietaria del Cantieri
Amer Yachts (Gruppo Permare), a rappresentare
ufficialmente in made in Italy in Kuwait.
Amer Yachts è stata infatti una delle aziende selezionate
dal Ministero degli Esteri per rappresentare il design
italiano nel mondo. È stata scelta insieme alla Fratelli
Razeto & Casareto - con Giangi Razeto ambasciatore
a Malta - entrambe associate a Ucina Confindustria
Nautica. A Barbara Amerio è stata affidata l’importante
missione diplomatica nell’ambito dell’iniziativa della
Farnesina che ha coordinato 100 eventi in 100 città in
tutto il mondo con cui promuovere, a livello globale, i
prodotti del made in Italy.
Il Gruppo Permare, nato a Sanremo negli anni ’70 dalla
grande passione del suo fondatore, Fernando Amerio,
è stato protagonista, nel 2000, della grande svolta con
la serie Amer, yacht progettati e costruiti interamente
custom made. Ecco spiegata la scelta per un incarico
straordinario e un grande riconoscimento per Barbara
Amerio che a Madinat al-Kuwait ha concluso l’evento
dell’Italian Design Day, con l’ambasciatore Giuseppe
Scognamiglio, diplomatico spezzino di adozione.
La Amer Yachts ha anche trionfato il 19 maggio all’Hotel
Cipriani di Venezia, agli “Yacht & Aviation Awards 2017”,
“Oscar” della nautica e dell’aviazione. L’imbarcazione
costruita dall’azienda sanremese, già premiata per
la sua innovazione tecnologica a Cannes 2016 con il
premio “Yacht più innovativo dell’anno”, questa volta
si è aggiudicata anche il primo premio nella categoria
Flooring per l’eccellenza dei suoi pavimenti.

The beautiful and well-made in Navigation has now its
own ambassadress.
Ennobled by merit and talent, Barbara Amerio, owner
of Cantieri Amer Yachts (Gruppo Permare), has
been chosen to officially represent Italian design and
production in Kuwait. Amer Yachts is, in fact, one of the
companies selected by Italy’s Foreign Affairs Bureau to
represent Italian design in the world, together with Fratelli
Razeto & Casareto (Giangi Razeto will be ambassador
in Malta), and both companies are members of Ucina
Confindustria Nautica. Barbara has been entrusted
the important diplomatic mission that is part of the
Farnesina’s project, which has put on 100 events in 100
cities worldwide with which to promote made-in-Italy.
In the year 2000, Gruppo Permare, founded in the
1970s in Sanremo by the passionate Fernando
Amerio, was a protagonist of a great turning point with
his Amer series: entirely custom-designed, custommade
yachts. This explains the choice of Barbara
Amerio for an extraordinary engagement and a great
acknowledgement. Barbara brought to a finish the
Italian Design Day event in Madinat al-Kuwait together
with ambassador Giuseppe Scognamiglio, a diplomat
that has been “adopted” by La Spezia.
Amer Yachts also came out victorious on 19 May at
Venice’s Cipriani Hotel’s “Yacht and Aviation Awards
2017”, the “Oscars” of these two sectors. The boat
built by the Sanremo company, which received the
award for “The year’s most innovative yacht” in Cannes
last year on account of its technological innovations,
received the award in the Flooring category as well,
thanks to its excellent floors.

La Velar arricchisce la famiglia Range Rover, infondendo

Basterebbero queste fotografie per fare a meno delle
parole. Ma la storia esige di essere raccontata. Cominciamo...
La tecnica? È un fondamentale. L’emozione?
Condizione dell’animo. Accade quando più passioni -
l’architettura e la fotografia, cioè le costruzioni e le loro
rappresentazioni - si fondono nell’unità di un pensiero
forte. Lui è Roberto Battistelli, un fior fiore di consulente,
ma che da quando, ragazzo, suo padre gli regalò la
prima macchina fotografica è alla ricerca “della foto che
fai solo te”. Determinanti poi due incontri con la genialità
dell’architetto Gianfranco Ricco e con Giovanni Gastel,
fotografo tra i primi al mondo.
Quale è stata la prima segnatura?
“Fu Gianfranco Ricco a “sfidarmi” per dare immagine
al piccolo busto della contessa di Castiglione di Francesco
Vaccarone che si “perde” nella grande piazza”.
Il particolare nell’universale?
“No, l’attimo che trasformi in eterno. Vado ricercando
l’estetica in un logo, in un volto, in una cantina, in una
fabbrica...”.
E quando lo trovi?
“Entri in un mondo fantastico, come quello di Alice”.
Quale sensazione si prova?
“Di libertà. Assaporata nel silenzio della camera oscura.
Ho cominciato a stamparmi i negativi ma lo facevo un tanto
al chilo. Poi ho studiato, ho scritto, nella magia dell’oscurità,
in un blocco bianco, il mio rapporto con la vita”.
E con Giovanni Gastel?
“Il fotografo appare una figura un po’ frivola, un hobbista.
Non è così. Il rapporto di affinità e di diversità
con il grande Giovanni Gastel mi ha proiettato sull’Olimpo
della fotografia d’autore. Con lui, che ha creato
icone, ho conosciuto tutti gli autori viventi con loro alte
caratteristiche purtroppo circoscritte alla generazione.
“Berengo Gardin, Scianna, Jodice, Bello Toscani, autori
del made in Italy nel mondo e che hanno in archivio la
storia, hanno tutti tra i 74 gli 83 anni”.
Quali sono i punti di maggior contatto con l’icona Gastel?
“La vera amicizia e la sensibilità estetica”.
Di fronte ad ogni oggetto?
“È la “tua” luce a fare la differenza nella poesia di una barca,
nella natura di Filicudi, a Fauglia tra vini pregiati, nei
palazzi, tra gli incursori e gli aviatori, nelle rughe di un volto,
nelle linee impalpabili del traffico, nella fabbrica dismessa”.
Quante foto hai fatto nella tua vita?”
Rispondo con Giovanni Gastel: non lo so”.

THE EVER-LASTING MOMENT
The photographs alone would simply be enough, but this
story wants being told. So let’s begin... Technique? It’s
of paramount importance. Emotions? They are a mood.
That’s what happens when two passions - architecture
and photography, i.e. buildings and their representation
- blend into the oneness of an intense thought. We’re
referring to Roberto Battistelli, one heck of a consultant,
who has been on a personal quest for “the picture that
only you can take” ever since his father gave him his first
camera when he was a boy. Two encounters have been
decisive in his life: the one with the genius of architect
Gianfranco Ricco and the one with Giovanni Gastel, one
of the world’s foremost photographers.
Which was your first imprinting?
“I have to thank Gianfranco Ricco for ‘challenging’ me
to come up with the right image of Francesco Vaccarone’s
bust of the Contessa di Castiglione, which
‘disappears’ in the vastness of the piazza”.
Are you talking about a universal quality?
“No, I mean the instant that you make ever-lasting.
I look for the aesthetic quality in a logo, a face, a cellar,
a factory...”
What happens when you run into it?
“You walk into a fantastic world, like Alice did”.
What do you feel at that moment?
“A sense of freedom. Relished in the silence of a darkro-

om. I started to print my own negatives, but I did it without
paying too much attention. Then I analysed things
and, in the magic of darkness, wrote on a note-block
about my relationship with life”.
What can you tell me about Giovanni Gastel?
“Photographers appear to be somewhat frivolous,
hobbyists. But that isn’t so. My affinity with and at the same
time my difference from the great Giovanni Gastel have both
projected me onto the Mount Olympus of art photography.
Thanks to him, who has created icons, I have become acquainted
with all living photographers, with their high-flung
characteristics, which are, unfortunately, limited by each
one’s generation. Berengo, Gardin, Scianna, Jodice, Bello,
Toscani, world-class Italian artists who have, moreover, filed
away history, all between 74 and 83 years old”.
Which are your greatest affinities with Gastel the icon?
“True friendship and aesthetic sensibility”.
Do you mean in front of every object?
“What makes a difference is ‘your’ light - in connection
to the poetry inherent in a boat, in Filicudi’s nature,
in Fauglia among prestigious wines, in buildings, with
incursori (Italian Navy Seals) and aviators, in a face’s
wrinkles, in the impalpable lines of moving traffic, in an
abandoned factory”.
How many pictures have you taken so far?
Let me answer like Giovanni Gastel would. I don’t know.

Abbiamo deciso, tra le novità, di iniziare un nuovo
percorso alla ricerca di personaggi o situazioni che ci

- Parco Valentino 2017, che si è tenuto nel capoluogo

dell’azienda che ha sede a Pontedera, nella bellissima
Toscana, era presente per mostrare al pubblico l’ultimo
aggiornamento realizzato per la sua Supercar sartoriale.

Il suo nome è Adriano Figone. Nella vita di tutti i giorni
è un geometra di alta professionalità progettuale del
Comune della Spezia ma resta anche il prodiere - mast
man, l’“uomo albero” alla manovra delle vele - più blasonato
nelle regate internazionali. Bisogna arrivare nel suo
arioso ufficio al sesto piano del municipio per scoprirlo
perché lui di ribalta non ne vuol sapere. Vinta la sua ritrosia
(“io non devo dimostrare niente”) ci ha aperto il suo
album e, pensate, lui può dire “io c’ero” nelle regate più
prestigiose e come se c’era visto che, su Mascalzone
Latino ha conquistato quattro campionati mondiali ed è
stato insignito della medaglia d’oro del Coni. Forte e resistente
come una roccia due sono i suoi segreti. La preparazione
atletica grazie al suo prof, Edoardo Bianchedi,
che , invece di fargli mettere il busto per una scoliosi, gli
ha cambiato la vita predisponendolo a sforzi fisici sovrumani,
e al talento di chi, come lui, pensa, in ogni prova, di
dare il massimo, non per farsi vedere ma come sfida con
se stesso. È così che dal 2001 al 2010 ha collezionato un
medagliere che fa impallidire.
His name is Adriano Figone. In his daily life, he is a highlyprofessional
surveyor for the Municipality of La Spezia, and
also the “mast-man” in charge of sails who has received the
most accolades at international regattas. It is necessary to
walk into his airy office on the town hall’s sixth floor to actually
see him, because he is absolutely not interested in the spotlight.
Once his coyness has subdued (“I don’t have to prove
anything”), he opens his album for us and, lo and behold,
here is someone who can definitely claim that he “was there”,
at the most prestigious regattas. And boy, was he there: he
has won four Mascalzone Latino world championships and
he has also been awarded the Coni gold medal. Strong and
adamant like a rock, he has two secrets: training with his instructor
Edoardo Bianchedi who, instead of having him wear
a special garment for his scoliosis, changed his life by having
him undertake super-human physical efforts; and the talent
of an individual who always aims at performing 100%, not looking
to show off but simply as a personal challenge. It is on
account of this that he has been able to gather an impressive
amount of medals between 2001 and 2010.

“Mi compro una macchina da cucire... mi metto a fare le borse.
Perché sono la mia passione!” Sono le parole dette tutte d’un fiato da Federica Colotto mentre ci racconta la sua attività nella quale, arte
e creatività sono fuse in un mix originale. Lei, in realtà, nasce come pittrice, il suo quadro è il percorso istintuale che si realizza sulla tela: “i
miei dipinti si realizzano da soli”. E così le sue borse, come un’opera d’arte, nascono cammin facendo, tutte diverse l’una dall’altra realizzate
con materiale scelto con cura, lo stile unico che a volte non nasconde il difetto che rende il risultato irripetibile. “Le borse le facevo per me,
avevo allestito una esposizione di modelli e... le borse sono piaciute”. Da quel momento la produzione è partita a San Terenzo con richieste
di modelli su misura”. Lavora su stoffa e pelli scelte a Firenze utilizzate per borse, pochette e portafogli. Il taglio vivo sulla pelle è adattato alla
borsa: “Non copio, non disegno, realizzo. Mi immagino la borsa, scelgo la pelle e m’ispiro a un modello. Ho un quaderno e faccio lo schizzo,
segno la base e l’altezza e mano a mano che realizzo mi viene la borsa, come quando facevo il quadro, il quadro si realizzava mentre lo
facevo”. Ogni modello è un pezzo unico. Anche alcuni vestiti portano il segno dell’artista: la passamaneria padroneggia la veste e i tessuti
hanno consistenza e colori che ricordano abiti di un tempo, quando la ricercatezza e l’unicità erano la prerogativa. Ultimo particolare: le
borse e gli accessori sono firmate Caronina, come le figlie, Carolina e Nina.
COLLECTION PURSES
“I’m going to buy me a sewing machine… I’m going to start making
handbags. Because I have a passion for them!” These words are uttered
all in one breath by Federica Colotto as she tells us about her craft, in which
art and creativity come together in an original ensemble. She actually started
out as a painter. Her paintings are an instinctual pathway come to life
on canvas: “My paintings come to life by themselves”. It’s the same thing
with her purses which, like works of art, materialize along the way, each
one unique, made with carefully selected materials. A unique style that
every now and then allows for a flaw that makes the item one of a kind. “I
used to make purses for myself. I put an exhibit on with my models and…
people liked them”. At that point, production kicked off at San Terenzo, with
demand for tailor-made items”. She works with fabrics and leathers picked
out in Florence, which she utilizes to make handbags, pochettes and wallets.
A raw cut on the leather is appropriate for a handbag: “I do not copy, I
don’t draw - I simply make things. I picture the bag in my head, choose the
leather and draw inspiration from a model. I have a notebook; I do a sketch,
decide on the base and the height and the bag materializes as I go, just like
when I did paintings, the painting crystallized as I dabbed on”. Each model
is indeed unique. Some garments, too, bear the sign of an artist: trimmings
lord it over a garment and fabrics have a solidity and colours that remind
one of times past, when refinement and uniqueness were a prerogative.
One last detail: both the bags and the accessories bear the name ‘Caronina’,
from the names of Federica’s daughters, Carolina and Nina.

LA MAGIA DELLA FAVOLA BELLA
Lo stile del lusso, che non è ostentazione di ricchezza,

all’Alpemare è lo spettacolo della natura a incantare
la mente e il corpo. Entri attraversando la pineta mediterranea
che pare disegnata, lavanda e bouganville
ti avvolgono in una freschezza vitale ripresa poi nei
dominanti colori dell’azzurro carta da zucchero e del
verde latte e menta. E con il comfort di altissimo livello
è come vivere una favola bella scaturita dal tocco della
bacchetta magica di un forte affetto. Nessuna meraviglia
se il giorno dopo l’apertura c’era il tutto esaurito.

THE MAGIC OF A BEAUTIFUL TALE
The style of luxury lives on in the distillate of a sublime simplicity

Such is the style chosen for the new, fabulous Alpemare
seaside resort, come to life thanks to the coming together
of the creative imagination of the Bonfante family (of Grand

and the body. You come in by walking through the Mediterranean
pine-wood, which appears as if it were a drawing;
lavender and bougainville enwrap you in their vital freshness,
which resounds in the dominant colours: baby blue and pale
green. All this, plus the high-level comforts, makes for living,
as it were, inside a fairy tale made real by the affectionate
touch of a magic wand. It is no wonder if on the morrow of
opening day the place was sold out.

Ogni Museo è una storia e il Museo Tecnico Navale della
Spezia ne racconta una particolare che guarda all’uomo,
alla sua capacità di confrontarsi con il mare e con la tecnologia,
che gli ha permesso di affermarsi sul mare e superare
difficoltà un tempo insormontabili.
Amedeo VII di Savoia realizzò la prima base navale sabauda
a Villefranche sur mer sul finire del XVI secolo e
progressivamente iniziò una raccolta di cimeli che nel
1775 fu organizzata a museo; allo scoppio della Rivoluzione
Francese il museo fu trasferito prima a Cagliari, poi
a Genova e nel 1870 alla Spezia e ci rende il museo navale
più antico al mondo.
La recente apertura della Sala Polene e della Sala Marconi
ha permesso di valorizzare al meglio due straordinarie
raccolte apprezzate in tutto il mondo; tutte le collezioni
sono in continuo ampliamento e oggi spaziano su vari
settori: mezzi d’assalto, esplorazioni polari e subacquee,
architettura navale, armi subacquee e artiglierie, fari e
segnalamenti, attrezzatura marinaresca che offrono una
vastissima panoramica sulla storia e sulle tradizioni della
marineria e della Marina italiana. Documenti d’archivio e
reperti sono qui muti testimoni di personaggi leggendari
e ne garantiscono un immortale ricordo.
Una visita al Museo Tecnico Navale della Spezia costituisce
un approccio che realizza appieno lo scopo per
il quale esso fu istituito: mantenere vivo il culto delle tradizioni
della Marina Militare, custodire il suo passato di
gloria, di ingegno, di onore e documentare l’evoluzione
della tecnologia nel settore marittimo.

CUSTODIAN OF GENIUS, GLORY AND HONOUR
Each museum is a story in itself, and La Spezia’s Naval
Technical Museum tells the special story of man’s ability
to interact with the sea and with technology, something
that has enabled him to gain a significant degree of mastery
over the sea and overcome difficulties that were
once considered unsurmountable.Amedeo VII of Savoy
established the first Savoy naval base at Villefranche-sur-
Mer at the end of the 16 th century and he went on to
start collecting relics that, in turn, went on to become a
museum in 1775. At the outset of the French Revolution,
the museum first moved to Cagliari (Sardinia) and later
on to Genoa and later still to La Spezia, and this makes it
the oldest naval museum in the world.
The recent opening of the Polene Hall and the Marconi
Hall has made it possible to fully appreciate two extraordinary
collections that are held in high esteem the
world over. The various collections are all expanded on
an ongoing basis and they now range over a variety of
sectors: assault devices, polar and underwater explorations,
naval architecture, underwater weapons and
artillery, lighthouses and other means of signalling, and
maritime equipment - all of which afford a vast overall
view of the history and traditions of navigation-related
matters and the Italian Navy. Archive documents and various
findings bear witness to legendary individuals and
guarantee their immortality. A visit to the Naval Technical
Museum of La Spezia affords an all-around fulfilment of
its purpose: to keep alive the veneration for Military Navy
traditions, to cherish its glorious past, and to honour and
document the maritime sector’s technological evolution.

Sono interventi delicati quelli che avvengono nel
laboratorio dove orologi di valore, anche gravemente
danneggiati, sono riportati al loro originale splendore.
L’artista del refitting degli orologi di lusso è Davide Baraldi,
51 anni, uno dei pochi in Italia che riceve - e non è un fatto
comune - i “pezzi” di ricambio dei Rolex.
E lui con il laser ottiene semplicemente la perfezione.
Il laser è il segno dell’evoluzione di questa antica professione
che, insieme alla passione, Davide ha ereditato dal padre
Giorgio, che a sua volta la ricevette in dote tre generazioni
fa. Perfezionate le sempre più sofisticate tecniche in scuole
svizzere, dove ha poi anche insegnato, Davide incarna
l’evoluzione di un mestiere ambìto cui era affidato il compito
di garantire la precisione dello scandire del tempo. Come
restauratore, oggi è specializzato in particolare nel recupero
di fisionomia, estetica e valore, perduto o compromesso,
dell’oggetto al quale teniamo, nel laboratorio che si affaccia
sulla colorita via del Prione, al numero 182. E gli appassionati
sanno di che cosa parliamo.
CLOCK RESTORER
Very careful operations take place inside this lab where
valuable watches, some badly damaged, are brought
back to their original splendour. Refitting artist Davide
Baraldi, fifty-one, is one of the few craftsmen in Italy to
receive - this is not a common thing at all - Rolex spare
parts. Thanks to a laser beam, he achieves utter perfection.
Laser is the current token of evolution in this old
métier which, together with inborn passion, Davide has
inherited from his father, Giorgio, to whom it was in turn
handed down by three previous generations. Baraldi
fine-tuned his increasingly sophisticated technique at
Swiss schools, where he has also taught. He incarnates
the evolution of a much sought-after profession that
has been entrusted the task of guaranteeing precision
in telling time. As a restorer, he has specialised in particular
in bringing back inside his lab in the colourful Via
del Prione (n. 182) the physiognomy, the looks and the
value, lost or compromised, of the objects we cherish.
Aficionados know what we mean.

DEL MARE
Certo non è la Cattedrale del Mare edificata a
Barcellona nel quindicesimo secolo, ma anche la città
marinara della Spezia è orgogliosa di mostrare la sua
piccola “cattedrale”, costruita come tempio votivo a
ricordo degli “Eroi del mare” dispersi tra i flutti. Un
vero e proprio gioiello architettonico di grande valore
artistico e storico, situato nel cuore dei quartieri nobili.
Il complesso, in stile romanico e a più facciate, è stato
costruito su progetto dall’ingegnere-architetto Gino
Bacigalupi ed impreziosito dalle vetrate artistiche di
Ercole Salvatore Aprigliano, celebre pittore e xilografo
italiano. Nato come convento dei Cappuccini alla fine
del ’500, raso al suolo per far posto a una batteria nel
1860, il Santuario fu ricostruito nel 1930, elevato poi
a parrocchia del Sacro Cuore e dedicato ai marinai
Caduti in guerra. Le cure del complesso sono state
affidate a don Giuseppe Savoca che, con urgenti
lavori, ha fatto eliminare le infiltrazioni di acqua piovana.
Anche le splendide vetrate policrome necessitano di
restauro “per tramandare intatto il patrimonio religioso
e culturale trasmesso dal passato”.
Certo non è la Cattedrale del Mare edificata a
Barcellona nel quindicesimo secolo, ma anche la città
marinara della Spezia è orgogliosa di mostrare la sua
piccola “cattedrale”, costruita come tempio votivo a
ricordo degli “Eroi del mare” dispersi tra i flutti. Un
vero e proprio gioiello architettonico di grande valore
artistico e storico, situato nel cuore dei quartieri nobili.
Il complesso, in stile romanico e a più facciate, è stato

di riuscire a tramandare intatto il patrimonio religioso

THE LITTLE SEA CATHEDRAL A
“CASKET” OF ART AND FAITH
It is certainly not the Cathedral of the Sea built in Barcelona
in the 15 th century, but the sea town of La Spezia
is nonetheless proud to showcase its little “cathedral”,
built as a votive temple in memory of heroes lost at sea.
A veritable architectural gem of great artistic and historic
value, situated right in the middle of the nobility’s neighbourhoods.
The complex, Romanesque in style and
endowed with various façades, was built according to
a project by engineer-architect Gino Bacigalupi and
enriched with windows designed by Ercole Salvatore
Aprigliano, a renowned Italian painter and xylographer.
Come to life as a Capuchin convent at the end of the
1500s, razed to the ground in 1860 in order to make
room for a battery, the sanctuary was rebuilt in 1930 and
promoted to Parish of the Sacred Heart, dedicated to
sailors who died in battle. Work on the building has been
entrusted to Don Giuseppe Savoca, who, thanks to urgent
interventions, has had the seepage of rain water
taken care of. The splendid stained-glass windows too
are in need of restoration work “in order to hand down,
intact, the religious and cultural heritage of the past”.

L’ospitalità e l’affabilità dei liguri non sono certo scontate
nei confronti dei turisti e degli ospiti anche se a volte si
tratta di pregiudizi. Il carattere dei liguri è comunque quello
che è, ben raffigurato nella vignetta qui accanto. Ed è
per questo che abbiamo pensato a un premio simpatia
da assegnare a chi va controcorrente, come i sorrisi che
incontri al Bar Oriani.

Quanto vale un sorriso? Non sempre è calcolabile. Certo
è che al Bar Pasticceria Oriani, sul lungomare di San
Terenzo, il sorriso che accoglie ogni cliente, che acquisti
o passi solo per salutare, che si sieda ai tavoli per consumare
o per scambiare due parole, è, insieme ai prodotti
selezionati con cura, il combinato disposto del successo
che lo accompagna. Ed è, dal 1918, la terza generazione,
dopo il bisnonno Egisto e il nonno Nino, ad aver accolto
con il compianto Gino, una grande eredità che fa della
cortesia la sua apprezzata qualità. A ricevere chi entra
c’è la signora Marisa che stravede per il suo paese e che
confessa, senza mostrare l’età, che nella vita altro non
poteva fare che la commerciante. Lo dice e si sente nelle
parole, nei gesti, nella cortesia, una merce non così
diffusa in terra di Liguria. Con lei la figlia Maria Veglia e
il figlio Paolo a produrre, nel laboratorio, le delizie della
premiata casa. Che dire? Non sono tutte queste qualità,
gli ingredienti per assegnare il nostro primo simbolico
Premio Simpatia a questo avamposto sul mare prossimo
a festeggiare i cento anni di attività? Certo che sì.

How much is a smile worth? That is not always
easy to assess. What is certain is the fact that at
the Bar Pasticceria Oriani, on the San Terenzo
seafront, the smile that welcomes every customer,
whether she or he buys something or stops by just
to say hello, whether he or she sits at a table to
eat or drink something or to exchange a couple of
words. That smile is, together with the carefully selected
products, the token of the success of the
shop. From its establishment in 1918, this is the
third generation to inherit the great heritage that
makes courtesy its much appreciated trademark.
They make, in the baking area, the delicacies that
are sold in this award-winning establishment. What
is there more to say? Aren’t all these qualities or
ingredients enough for rightfully awarding our first,
symbolic Simpatia Award? This seaside outpost,
about to celebrate its 100 th anniversary, most certainly
deserves it.
