the Middle Ages the surrounding walls we now know so
well, were extended. As much as the Middle Ages could
have also been Dark Ages, at San Gimignano there was
an air of change thanks to the construction of new buildings,
churches and convents enriched with illustrious
works of art all around Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza
del Duomo. Therefore, even the great artists of the Sienese
school such as Simone Martini, Lippo Memmi and
Puccio di Bartolo just couldn’t miss out on this destination,
participating in the cultural development of the
city.
Yet, behind today’s San Gimignano there lies a secret, so
be careful not to fall for its scenic appearance: the hamlet,
as it is today, has been reconstructed in the years. In
fact, in the 19th century, commissioned by the Grand
Duke of Tuscany, the German architect Von Klenze started
important restoration works in the town changing its
structure and giving it its ancient Medieval splendour.
He had the towers rebuilt, restored the walls and built
the round town walls which are so typical of it now.
“Masterpiece of creative human genius, San Gimignano
bears rare testimony of a past civilization and the
exceptional example of architectural and landscape development
as well as testimony of important phases of
human history,” is how Unesco describes it in the World
Heritage List.
all’arricchimento culturale della città.
e riportandola all’antico splendore medievale. Fece riedificare
