Gubbio (PG)
that welcomes thousands of tourists
in the historic villages of the province
of Pesaro and Urbino, between the
inland hills and the lively cities on the
Adriatic coast. On Saturday 23, Candele
a Candelara will be held, with markets,
cribs and shows at Santa's Village and
Workshop, with scheduled power cuts
leaving the village lit only by candlelight
twice a day. On 29 November we
continue to Mombaroccio, with about
forty typical wooden houses where
you can indulge in gifts and the
Chiostro dei Sapori offering local food
and wine, from the end of the month,
Christmas very (n)ice will be hosted in
Pesaro, and in December Natale Più in
Fano, with stands and events open up
to the Epiphany.
In Tuscany, the market and the castle
of Santa Claus in Montepulciano
(Siena) and the Tyrolean village in
Arezzo are worth a visit. On the hills in
the province of Siena, the lights will
go on from Saturday 16, with over 80
Christmas shopping points between
Via San Donato and Piazza Grande
and loads of attractions for the whole
family. A new feature this year is the
Christmas Terrace, a place suspended
in time overlooking the Temple of San
Biagio and the Val d'Orcia, where you
can sip the excellent local red wine in
front of a breath-taking view, while the
medieval fortress will be transformed
into the Santa Claus’ castle, with more
than two thousand square meters
of decorated rooms full of surprises.
In Arezzo, on the other hand, from 16
November to 26 December the largest
Tyrolean market in Italy will be back,
hosted in the beautiful Piazza Grande,
with tasting huts, and typical Tirolese
beers and cakes. In Taneto di Gattatico,
about twenty kilometres from Reggio
Emilia, there is the extensive Santa’s
village by Mondo Verde Garden: 4,500
square meters set up with different
settings and decorations each year,
from 25 October until the Epiphany.
Genoa is famous for its traditional
nativity scenes: together with Naples
(don’t miss the San Gregorio Armeno
artisans’ road), it is one of the most active
centres in the production of historicalartistic
figures for nativity scenes.
The Ligurian city also offers concerts
of sacred, classical and baroque
music, themed itineraries, Christmas
markets and, from 26 December to 6
January, the Circumnavigando circus
and theatre festival, which entertains
the public over the holidays. Let’s
not forget Gubbio (Perugia), from 23
November, with the famous event
of the lighting of the world's largest
tree on 7 December. Visitors will be
delighted by the North Pole wheel,
the frozen lake, the life-size nativity
scene and the living nativity scene,
the Gubbio Express Christmas train
and the Christmas Land guided tour
programme. At Sutri (Viterbo) this
year, from Saturday 23 rd , there is the
Caffeina Christmas Village usually set
up in Viterbo, a fascinating world of
fantasy with the homes of Santa Claus
and the Befana witch, and the caves
of the elves. To the south, Christmas
among the trulli of Alberobello (Bari)
is unmissable, held from 7 December
with markets, street artists and scenic
lights. There are so many initiatives
up and down the country, it would
be impossible to list them all - every
city, town and village has a surprise in
store for Advent.
