CHAIN 02/2020
Chain
Evolution
“Chain”.
dell’inestimabile know-how tramandato dalle successive
generazioni. Radici ben piantate nel terreno che oggi
producono nuovi frutti.
Spiegare
e mostrare verso dove ci stiamo evolvendo, come
produzione e come azienda, vuol dire continuare a
rendere compartecipi di questo straordinario cammino
tutti i nostri clienti, fornitori e collaboratori. Orgogliosi
delle nostre radici, guardiamo all’innovazione come a
Filippo, Alice e Tobia

“Chain”. When we think about it, its pronunciation does
not differ so much from “Change”.
The chain as the protagonist of a change in the way
of thinking, creating and reinventing it to turn it into
something that had never been before and give it
the dignity of a jewel. Alessi Domenico is engaged in
an important phase of company evolution, which also
translates into a significant product evolution. It is the
distinctive sign of the epoch-making transition that
today sees the fourth generation of the Alessi family
running the company, increasingly projected towards
process and product innovation required by the current
challenges of the jewellery market, but in the deep wake
of a leadership in the sector begun by great-grandfather
Domenico in 1946 and of the invaluable know-how
handed down by subsequent generations. Roots well
planted in the ground that today produce new fruits.
Even the ones we are experiencing are new times of
change. Beyond the confines of our company there is a
world and a market that are evolving rapidly. In trends,
tastes, needs and sensitivities. And adapting to the new
times requires continuous renewal. The pioneering spirit
is in our DNA and innovation, research, technology,
creativity and design are the means to express it. Revisiting
the classic concept of the chain, from the basic line to
the best-selling chains that have identified us in over
70 years of history, means investing a lot of resources in
research and development. Creating new links and also
giving a new and surprising identity, through different
production techniques, to existing products: this is the
way in which we take up the challenges and relaunch
them to leave our mark again and again, strengthening
our image and our presence on the markets.
Also in this second issue of Chain, the story of who we
are and what we do, in a vision focused on today but
already projected towards tomorrow, will be the leitmotif
of our content. Explaining and showing where we are
evolving, as a production company and as a company,
means continuing to make all our customers, suppliers
and collaborators share in this extraordinary journey.
Proud of our roots, we see innovation as a beneficial
source of energy.
And so “Chain” is synonymous with “Change”. We want
to communicate who we are through the choices we make,
aware that, quoting Kierkegaard, life can only be understood
by going back, but it must be lived by going forward.

CHAIN 02/2020
Come tutti
It’s not every day that you meet a 20-year-old boy
who holds a position of responsibility within a
company. On the contrary, for the specific sector
of competence it can be said that it is a more
unique circumstance than rare. Tobia Alessi is the
head of Research and Development at Domenico
Alessi Spa. Like all 20 year olds, Tobia cultivates the
dreams that give life to the hopes of his wonderful
age. But it is immediately clear that he is a young
man with his head on his shoulders. Also because
his dream is already being realized.
D
R
Tobia Alessi, cosa significa avere 20 anni e
Q
A
Tobia Alessi, what does it mean to be 20 years
old and therefore have the interests of all young
people of your age but at the same time be a
manager of a company of this level?
«First of all, it means a great desire to grow, to
never stop learning and to say: “You can always
do better”. It means to be passionate about your
work, which is something that came by chance, in
the summer after the school exams. It’s still a great
responsibility that I found myself and I also looked
for myself. I’ve always been fascinated by the
manual ability to work, to do something concrete».
D
R
uffici.
Q
A
Who was Tobia before he became the R&D
manager?
«I attended a language school. A high school that
always interested me because I always imagined, in
the future, that I would use English and languages
to have a better knowledge of whatever work I
would choose. When I finished my private exams,
in the three summer months, with friends who had
gone away for the holidays, staying at home bored
me and I started to come to the company to do
the jobs a bit easier, like taking papers and go to
offices. However, it was my first introduction to the
world of work. Seeing what the time is, waking up
early, having goals, appointments and then being
precise. I felt I had responsibilities that I didn’t have
before with the school, apart from waking up early.
While with work calling people and being on time
involved small big responsibilities».

R
Come
aggiunto all’azienda. Apprendere come arriva l’oro
arrivare fino all’Ufficio Controllo e successivamente
ad essere responsabile dell’ufficio Ricerca e
Sviluppo.
I materiali,
i processi produttivi? Cosa si sperimenta nel
reparto?
lavorazione.».
Q
A
Q
A
Q
A
What was the pathway?
«The path was unexpected, started thanks to my
dad, supported by Alice and Filippo. Like them
I learned all the steps of the work to have my
personal baggage and be able to give something
added to the company. Learning how gold arrives
and how to work it, department by department,
helps to give a great awareness and knowledge of
the product, its development processes. A journey
that lasted about a year and a half and that led me
from the first step in the Wire Drawing Laboratory
to the Control Office and then to be responsible
for the Research and Development department. A
responsibility that concerns not only the conception
of new chains but also the development of the
production of existing chains with less cost, more
time saving, less energy consumption».
So, what does Research and Development at
Domenico Alessi mean?
«Never stop, always have a new goal, have no
limits, be able to experiment. One very important
thing is the trust that my brothers Filippo, Alice and
my father have given me, but also our collaborators
such as Mauro, in charge of production, and Paola,
in the control office. I have the freedom to express
myself creatively, daring and trying to face new
challenges. The experimentation on the product
and on the materials together with the continuous
confrontation with those who have more experience
than me are the values that have brought us to have
successes like the Figaro 3 Colors of natural alloy,
one of our strong points ».
What is the experimentation about? Materials,
production processes? What do you experiment
in the R&D Department?
«With the chain you can only start from a material
that is gold, white gold, yellow gold or pink gold,
and from here you can open a world. It is a long
process that requires a lot of patience in finding the
right compromise between the idea, the machinery,
the time and the same material that must be
suitable for processing».

R
Q
A
Let us talk about results. What are the product
results you are most proud of?
«Two products in particular. The Figaro 3 Colors of
natural alloy that was one of my first projects, born
from an idea. It is a chain, a combination of yellow,
pink and white gold with the result, which was also
a challenge, of having a single gold thread of three
different natural alloy colors. Until now, the “three
colors” had always been thought of as a pink, a white
and a yellow link or vice versa, so we revolutionized
the concept of the three colors by creating a new
chain. The other product is much simpler but in my
opinion it is just as beautiful. It is a forced chain that
is born rolo but, through machines, is turned link by
link through a plastic deformation. By modifying a
gradation of the machine by a few millimetres and
modifying the workmanship, we were able to give
the chain another type of shape, more rectangular.
It was a challenge to geometrically change the
concept of the chain ».
D
R
D

La Domenico Alessi ha una sua visione. Lei che
visione ha?
«La mia visione è innanzitutto come famiglia. E
Spiego
Q
A
Q
A
Domenico Alessi has its own vision. What is your
vision?
«My vision is first and foremost as a family. That
is, having all the same ideas, then being able to
approach the respective ideas and integrate them
into a single vision but maintaining their specificity.
As far as I’m concerned, the vision is not to stop at
what can be a basic chain, standards or certain types
of processing and to always look for machinery,
the way that can innovate if not revolutionize the
production process ».
You told me your friends don’t understand what
you are doing. What do you say to explain it to
them ?
«I explain that I am the head of a Research and
Development team that has the task of finding
new ideas and developing even old ones, maybe
some that have not yet been completed. I also
explain that today, however, with new materials and
machinery, there is the possibility of doing so».

ALESSI DOMENICO GOLD OVERVIEW
Perchè dobbiamo
tornare ad investire
nell’oro
Why we should go back
investing in gold
custodito segretamente in cantina.
stabile a lungo termine.
i 25 e i 44 anni acquista beni in oro.
l’aspetto emozionale. Se i nostri nonni o i nostri genitori
Shortly before my mother passed away, she handed me
a box that she had always kept secretly in the cellar. It
was the gold of the family: nothing of great value, let’s
be clear, a few rings, three or four chains with pendants,
a beautiful bracelet of rare Italian manufacture. All this
for a market value of about three thousand euros. But
if those gifts, instead of gold, had been translated into
technological goods such as a tablet or a mobile phone,

a livello mondiale acquistano gioielleria d’oro perché
maniera oculata.
l’oro potrà ritornare ben presto a rappresentare parte
lavorazione.
tagliare ancora i tassi, unite all’incertezza globale diffusa.
remunerativa.
forty-fifty years later? Generally, gold is perceived as a
good that maintains its value over time, safe, a durable
good often purchased by investors to diversify the assets,
able to offer a stable capital in the long term. Those who,
on the other hand, go to jewellery to buy a gold jewel,
often do so for reasons that are mostly sentimental or to
“show” their wealth, their success, around their necks.
Reading a research published by the World Gold Council
in October 2019 (of which some data will be reported),
strangely as you might think, the inclination to buy gold
is quite stable between generations: 56% of respondents
who fall in the age group between 25 and 44 years buy
gold goods.
However, if the sample of respondents is analysed in
depth, the link between gold and Generation Z, i.e. the
generation following the Millennials (generally limited
to those born in the second half of the 1990s and the
end of the 2000s), is less strong from an emotional point
of view. If our grandparents or parents bought jewellery
and then gave it as a gift to the “fiancée” or to their
grandchildren, Generation Z pushed luxury brands to
review their sales strategies, which are increasingly
oriented towards creating needs or enhancing the
advantages that a luxury good, such as a jewel, can
offer in order to emerge from the social “mass”
(Deloitte: Global Powers of Luxury Goods 2018): 46%
of the “Z consumer” worldwide buy gold jewellery
because it helps them to fit into the social environment
in which they live. In addition, it is a generation that
experienced the economic instability of 2008 and, as a
result, appreciate stability and smart shopping. In his
interview with the Luxury Society, Jeff Fromm, President
of FutureCast, said “they (Generation Z consumers)
like to work hard for their money and spend it wisely.
I think their desire for luxury will be greater (than that
of millennials). That’s why gold will soon return to
represent part of the “family portfolio”, as happened
years ago despite being the result of a different buying
process, which started with different motivations.
And then, let’s face it: in a period in which climate
change denounced by Greta pushes the whole world
to rethink products from a “green” point of view, gold
is perhaps one of the very few goods that do not throw
themselves into the trash; indeed, in the goldsmith
companies the “sweepings” are so precious that they
are brought to refine to recover the gold that is waste
from processing.
Now, if we look at gold as an investment good to be
allocated in our basket made of bonds, ETFs, shares,

quanto sopravvalutati. Anche in questo caso, sarebbe
opportuna una revisione del portafoglio con una
maggiore attenzione all’oro.
nell’acquistare oro passa in secondo piano. È dunque
real estate, liquidity, perhaps it is appropriate to stop
and review the diversification of this portfolio.
The arrival of a new phase of economic instability,
due to continuous geopolitical moves, to a cycle of
American economic growth that has now reached its
limits and to a European economy that has never fully
recovered since 2008, is pushing central banks to return
to a more expansive monetary policy, reducing the
expected returns on government bonds (the Fed cut
interest rates three times in 2019).
a) The government bond yield curve
The chart (Chart 1) shows the yield curve for US
government bonds: as always, it was the “low inflationary
pressures” that prompted the Fed to cut rates again,
together with widespread global uncertainty. This
reversal of the trend in the yield curve (even negative
in the short term) is often a sign of a recessionary
phase. In the face of a decline in bond yields, gold can
become a more attractive and profitable investment
diversification alternative.
b) The Price/Earnings ratio of equities
Price to Earnings ratio is a method of measuring the
value of a company. Investors calculate the price/
earnings ratio of a company so that they can compare
the value of a share in one sector with another. The
price/earnings ratio can also serve as a guide for
determining whether a company is currently overvalued
or undervalued compared to its historical averages.
The chart (Chart 2) shows that the P/E index is at an
28
CHAIN 02/2020
all-time high compared to the reversal of bond yields
and this has historically preceded a wave of stock sales
as overvalued. Again, a revision of the portfolio with a
greater focus on gold would be appropriate. Gold has
always proved to be immediately liquid compared to a
bond or equity.
c) Geopolitical instabilities
The last five years have seen increasing geopolitical
instability. Brexit, the constant crisis in the Middle East,
the customs war between the United States and the rest
of the world, bring gold back to its highest expression
of good refuge.
debito sovrano a rendimento negativo (Chart 5).
investimento a lungo termine.
motivo soprattutto sentimentale o come espressione
Options o titoli azionari, investiamo pure quei diecimila
Claudio Fuga – CFO Management
It is clear that gold itself does not have a return,
expressed in dividends or coupons, precisely because it
is not a credit instrument with a risk to be remunerated.
However, in a scenario where equities are now
overvalued and 82% of sovereign debt is paying for
negative real returns (i.e. adjusted by the inflation rate),
the “opportunity cost” of buying gold takes a back seat.
It is therefore possible to predict how the gold price
will develop in the short term. The price has historically
followed a positive correlation with the trend of the
negative yield sovereign debt (Chart 5).
A mistake that many investors make in the phases in
which bond yields decrease or even become negative,
is to focus on high-risk and high-yield investments: in
behavioral finance this approach is called “aversion to
certain loss”. On the contrary, the performance of gold
has been seen to double in a scenario with negative
rates of return.
In conclusion, let’s reflect on the convenience, in our
own small way, of rethinking the world of jewellery as
a long-term investment. If past or mature generations
were driven to buy a piece of jewellery for a sentimental
reason or as an expression of power, the younger
generations are attracted by another type of need:
stability or belonging to a group.
Therefore, we mere and small investors, who do not
have the competence to buy ETFs, Stock Options or
shares, let us invest those ten thousand euros in 24kt
gold chains: we will certainly sign fewer papers of which
we do not even know the meaning and our savings will
be more secure than in one of the Venetian banks taken
on for the record.

Has the market reacted positively?
“At the time it was a feasible strategy, and still

Moreover, it is a consistent target in relation to
the will to open new outlets on markets not yet

sometimes means to perceive the future”.

How did you deal with cost containment and

andato in default.
aziendale.
primo luogo dalle persone.
E ugualmente
chi lavora in amministrazione, in produzione, nelle
spedizioni, eccetera.
sempre avvenuta. Questa è una cosa preziosa.»

market had gone into default. There was no more
demand and the company had begun to see
another dark period after 2008. The time had come
for a generational change following a business
plan that would lead to a corporate reorganization.
Thanks to a mix of luck, skill, will and above all
thanks to the help of all the co-workers, we were
able to achieve good results right from the start”.
You mean the human factor is one of the
elements behind your success?
“Yes, it is crucial. I always say this because the
company is not so much a good location, a good
product, a good marketing, but it is made primarily
by people. If the people working in R&D are not
happy tomorrow morning, we don’t develop a good
product. If the marketing people are not happy,
they don’t develop a good campaign. And likewise
those who work in administration, production,
shipping, and so on. It is essential to create the
group and that everyone within the group has their
own space and above all embraces the philosophy
of the company. A company that in our case is
made up of the family. We have always had on the
one hand the ability and on the other the fortune to
involve in our family another much larger family that
is made by people, we have always tried to share
and involve everyone. In my opinion this has been
one of the main ingredients of Alessi Domenico’s
success, and I’m not talking about when there
was the generational change, but since my greatgrandfather
in fact. Because the collaboration
with excellent partners, excellent collaborators,
excellent consultants, excellent people has always
happened. This is a precious thing.”

Vision and Trend
Alice Alessi, Sales and Marketing Director
- spiega Alice Alessi, Sales and Marketing Director di Alessi Domenico Spa -. Abbiamo
We have not yet returned to the famous “Golden Era” of the 80s, the “golden moment”
of the gold market, which was followed by a decline that lasted several years. But we have
witnessed and are again witnessing a continuous trend of growth that has brought back to
broadly positive ground the market scenarios.
«In particular, the areas of North America and South America are showing significant
growth, so America remains a solid market with great potential - explains Alice Alessi,
Sales and Marketing Director of Alessi Domenico Spa -. We have seen a slight decrease in
what is the Middle East market and partly also in Asia. However, new markets are emerging
and demand remains important. This confirms that unlike what happened in the past, when
the replacement products had displaced what is the jewel, the chain, the bracelet, today
is no longer so and the market has changed direction. The gold jewel is seen not only as a
refuge good but for many cultures remains to be an object of great importance. A product

that therefore has a great appeal and that returns to
be fashionable. Riding this positive moment allows us
to face the challenges that the markets present us with
enthusiasm and also with different possibilities and
creativity.»
Country that you go, trend that you find. “As far as our
sector is concerned, today we are witnessing a very
varied demand for products - reports Alice Alessi -.
Some areas, such as the United States, remain on chains
of a certain weight, which have a certain type of link
and shape, such as the Miami Cuban, which remains
a bestseller for us. We serve markets where the chain
is more seen as a “pendant chain”, which requires a
lighter weight. Some people are looking for a chain
that has a slightly more fancy style, some others are still
tied to the classic and so on. For example, Korea wants
white gold, Russia remains as a preference in the rosé,
America and South America confirm that for them the
yellow is “cool”. This is wealth, we are different and so
we get represented, we choose different products and
36
CHAIN 02/2020
facciamo rappresentare, scegliamo prodotti differenti e
la responsabile Sales and Marketing -.
Dunque Alessi Domenico diventa brand a tutti
gli effetti.»
this really allows us to space.
Producing and creating for such a varied demand also
allows us to give space to product innovation.
«Alessi Domenico, in fact for the first time in his history,
also chooses to create objects that are manipulations
of the chains he produces - concludes the Sales and
Marketing Manager - So the chain becomes a jewel,
takes on a new way of being worn. The chain wants
to communicate and with a great personality wants to
position itself in a different way. I won’t hide the fact
that in Alessi Domenico’s vision there is also that of
confirming and communicating as a brand.
So not only as a company that produces and has
produced significant quantities and numbers of gold
but also as a company that wants to communicate its
identity. So Alessi Domenico becomes a brand to all
intents and purposes.»

distribuzione, come i Department Stores e soprattutto

Zampierin. Even if located inside the San Isidro facility,
the jewellery laboratory will still be a department
completely detached from all other chain production
processes. Market research has already been carried
out and the information gathered encourages us to
quickly open up this new space. We are convinced
that the new line will be able to access not only Alessi
Domenico’s current customers but also other large
distribution groups, such as Department Stores and
especially boutiques, which is the best business card to
reach a high target, made up of representatives of the
showbiz and so on, which will take us to an even higher
level of the market.
In addition to the skills of Luca Favrin, the initiative was
developed thanks to the inventiveness of Tobia Alessi
who from the very beginning worked to develop the
project and the product, to coordinate people and to
create a real business plan supported by the siblings
Filippo and Alice.
The grand opening of the new production “jewel” of
Alessi Domenico Caribe is getting closer and closer.
New year, new goals.

ALESSI CHAIN
Un classico che non tramonta mai
La parola ad Alice Alessi | The word to Alice Alessi
anzi incalcolabile. Come i due vecchi quaderni che
racchiudono le origini del know-how aziendale della
Alessi Domenico.
in prodotti originali: idee, disegni, prove, parametri,
formule di leghe.
There are things that are more precious than gold
and whose value is immeasurable. Like the two old
notebooks that contain the origins of Alessi Domenico’s
business know-how.
The first collects the notes of great-grandfather
Domenico on the production of the first chains made by
hand in that laboratory that would later be transformed
into the important goldsmith company that bears
his name. The second contains the travel notes of his
grandfather Giovanni Aldo around the world to study
the manufacture of chains and to think about how to
translate it into original products: ideas, drawings, tests,
parameters, formulas of alloys.

CHAIN 02/2020
in assoluto.
catena. Ma diversamente dal sole, non tramonta mai.
For the new Alessi generation, these are two invaluable
documents. Those two notebooks, in addition to the
memory of the initiators of the fantastic adventure,
contain the birth and development of the Alessi Chain.
Alessi Chain is much more than a chain: it is a classic
that crosses time. It’s a chain that comes from a great
ability to dream and that comes from a link that is unique
in its kind. It is the chain that represents us and has
represented us in these 73 years of history and has been
and still is the flagship of our collection along with the
Valentino and Miami Cuban.
“What I think the Alessi Chain has in addition is that it
has managed to establish itself internationally with our
name - says the Sales and Marketing Director Alice
Alessi - So when we talk about Alessi Chain in the world
we talk about the Herringbone, which is in fact the link
and the name that is given to this chain. For example,
a Chanel Bag is mentioned and immediately identified,
just as when we talk about Alessi Chain in our sector
we immediately identify this type of chain that has been
substantially invented by us.
Today, the Alessi Chain is the absolute best seller of
Alessi Domenico. Its sales remain very high, over the
years and decades it has recounted many different styles
and conquered different countries, while remaining a
chain that has never been seen as outdated and that
is born and reborn continuously. Today it is also a must
for the most important stars and celebrities because it
never ceases to conquer and fascinate.
From the great-grandfather’s and grandfather’s
notebooks to the scenarios of excellence of the goldsmith
market, which continues to appreciate its unmistakable
link and its refined and luminous reflections.
Alessi Chain looks like the sunlight collected in a chain.
But unlike the sun, it never sets.

«For us it is a reason of pride to collaborate with Alessi

leader in the production of chains.»

è ora condotta dai fratelli Danilo e Paolo Bertoncello.
Bertoncello -. Abbiamo cominciato a dare i primi forni
“
G.B. F.lli Bertoncello, azienda
costruttrice di forni per
l’oreficeria e storico fornitore di
Alessi Domenico Spa
G.B. F.lli Bertoncello,
manufacturer of goldsmith’s
furnaces and historical supplier
of Alessi Domenico Spa
years, is the one who says so.
“
His is also a historic company and world leader in its
field. Founded in 1958 by Giuseppe Bertoncello, it is
now run by brothers Danilo and Paolo Bertoncello.
But the management of the company has passed from
hand to hand to the third generation of the family.
Andrea is young, like his brother Luca, his sister Giulia
and his cousin Marco. All four are directors of G.B.
F.lli Bertoncello and support the two owners in the
management of the company, which is now projected
into the future for new ambitious goals. A happy
generational transition that is similar to that of Alessi
Domenico Spa.

ALESSI DOMENICO PROJECTS
«The collaboration with Alessi Domenico started many
years ago, even when our grandfather was there and
he was the founder of our company - explains Andrea
Bertoncello -. We started to give the first furnaces for
the welding of the chain and today we are still here that
we collaborate, giving them machines and systems of
the new generation. For us it has always been a very
important company, as well as being from our own
territory, and as a passage between generations it also
has a history in part similar to ours. Two companies that
have a road and a path that is continuing».
avanzate, prossimamente dobbiamo consegnargli
importanti - afferma Luca Bertoncello -. Quindi
«As manufacturers of machinery for the goldsmith
sector, we mainly manufacture furnaces for melting
metal, then other plants such as furnaces for annealing
material or for welding chains - he continues -. Alessi
Domenico has had some of these for many years and
it is proof of the quality of what we produce. They have
always purchased technologically advanced machines,
and in the near future we will have to deliver them three
latest generation continuous casting machines for metal
casting. This shows that Alessi Domenico is a company
that always invests in technology».
The young directors of G.B. F.lli Bertoncello underline
the importance of having a customer of this level,
with whom they generate an exchange of ideas and
information that help to design and build the most
suitable technological solutions to his needs.
«The comparison with the customer helps us to develop
aspects and details that are very important for us as
manufacturers - says Luca Bertoncello - So we must feel
the needs of the customer and then bring him products
that really serve the market. Alessi Domenico, having
started many years ago with our grandfather, has always
led us to improve the technologies and quality standards
of the machines.»
And now that both companies have transferred
responsibility for their present and future to young
people, the fact that they are of the same age as Alessi
helps a lot in the further development of the decadeslong
partnership. «This is a key point - Andrea Bertoncello
confirms - since more or less the same age, the attitude
to the management of relationships is much simpler and
also more fluid. Among peers it is also easier sometimes
to understand each other, for us it is no small thing.»
«We are proud to collaborate with Alessi - concludes
Andrea - and I hope the feeling is mutual. We always
try to satisfy their requests also from the point of view
of assistance. We are happy and honoured to cooperate
with such an important company. »
