THE ‘DENIS ZANETTE’ ROUTE ALONGTHE PAISA STREAM109The antique and attractive town of Sacile,called the ‘Garden of the Serenissima’ duringthe Republic of Venice, is the westernmostmunicipality of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.Sacile can be considered a ‘water town’, sinceit originated and developed along the banks ofone of the most important rivers in Friuli, theLivenza (1).The route, and the cycling track running alongthe Paisa Stream (2), an affluent of the LivenzaRiver, are both dedicated to the memory of DenisZanette (1970-2003), the cycling championfrom Sacile who died prematurely. The route ispart of the urban development project of theTown of Sacile started at the beginning of 2000,to promote healthy lifestyles and prevention inits different aspects, as indicated by the WHOand the Italian Network of Healthy Cities, ofwhich Sacile is a member.This route develops in the city of Sacile forabout 4 kilometres. It is suitable for families,elderly people, walk groups, nordic walkingand more. It is mostly a pedestrian and cyclingtrack and develops on existing trails.Its starting point is the parking area of ViaCarducci, in front of the ‘Forum Due Mori’ (3)social centre, an aggregation and referenceplace for many inhabitants of Sacile, mostlyelderly.The route then partly runs along the existing‘Denis Zanette’ pedestrian and cycling trackand continues through San Liberale, until itreturns to the historical centre through VialeTrieste, Via Cavour, Corte Ragazzoni (4) andOrtazza Park (5).The itinerary, mostly unwinding in a picturesquenatural area, is magical. The remaining part ofthe route develops in the historical centre andis therefore equally fascinating and interesting.Along the urban path, it is possible to admirethe church of San Liberale (6) and the tower ofSan Rocco (7), erected between 1470 and 1485to defend the town from the Turkish invasion.Of the five towers, this is one of the three stillstanding. The towers are connected to eachother by underground tunnels, which originally,together with a wall, defended Sacile.Another attraction worthy of a visit, andperhaps the most representative buildingof Sacile’s past is the elegant 16 th -centuryRagazzoni Palace (8), which bears the nameof the last illustrious family of Venetian shipownersand merchants who lived there.Route general data4,0 Km1 hpaved roadpetfriendlyaccessibleroadnight timeaccessibilitySacilewww.comune.sacile.pn.it
