THE RING OF ANCIENT TRADES29The Ring of Ancient Craftsmen is dividedinto two routes. The first one is about 3.5 kmlong with a 200 m gradient, and develops inan area that largely surrounds the village ofAndreis, on mainly dirt ground in contact withthe natural environment. The route startsfrom the “Al Pical” area (1) and runs alongsidethe Ledròn Stream, crossing a mixed forestwhere you can see a mill (2) and another millwith blacksmiths workshop (3). The paththen climbs to the old dairy (4), now used asInformation Centre of the Friulian DolomitesPark. From this point the birdlife area with theaviaries of birds of prey can be easily reached.Along the route that leads to the Favria (5), theold blacksmith’s workshop, you can admire tworefined capitals, while nearby, in the squareof Andreis, you can visit the EthnographicMuseum. The town centre still preserves threehistoric fountains and typical stone houseswith wooden balconies called “daltz”.Along the streets, signboards display thepoems by Federico Tavan, the poet who sanghis village, Andreis, with great intensity. Theroute leads to the Saint Daniel Church and tothe bank of the Susaibes Stream, where thereare two old lime kilns (6-7), once used forlimestone processing. Here you can also visitan important geosite where you can admirethe signs of the collision of the continentalplates on the rock walls. A photo signboardindicates the presence of a mill (8) just beforethe old path of the Cordata (or Crodata), withits restored dry stone walls. Return to thestarting point, at the caravan park and picnicarea, both with easy access to the Alba Streamand with a panoramic view of the mountsRaut and Castello. The second route, which isabout 2 km long and has a gradient of 150 m,completes the previous one and starts at thebridge over the Alba stream. It retraces for agood distance the ancient Par Crous road thatconnected the whole Valcellina with the upperFriuli plain. The route, surrounded by greenery,leads to the historic Bosplans fountain (9), duginto the rock, where it seems that Attila himselfquenched his thirst.In front of the fountain there is the oldBosplans dairy (10) to witness the intensecheese production activity of the past.Bosplans is a hamlet of Andreis: here too youcan find the typical houses with the “daltz”which can be accessed through the “puarta dali scjalis”, meaning in Friulian “the door to thestairs”.
