THE PATH IN THE LUPANICA LOWLAND FOREST87The Lupanica route develops from theresidential centre of Muzzana del Turgnanoand then crosses the countryside and theBaredi Forest – Arvonchi Wood, remains ofthe ancient Silva Lupanica, a lowland forestthat once stretched between the Livenza andIsonzo rivers. Today the forest is a SpecialArea of Conservation (SAC), Site: IT 3320034,belonging to the “Natura 2000” Network.The area lets you admire the naturalattractions, take a breath of fresh air and carryout physical activity, retracing places whichwere the scene of important historical eventsof the community of Muzzana.The circular route starts from the Orbi Park (1),overlooked by Villa Muciana, today housing thelocal section of the Alviero Negro Library.Leaving the square behind, continue southalong Via Levada (former Strada Levada delPrincipe), built by the Doge of Venice betweenthe end of the 16 th century and the beginningof the 17 th century), and in just a few metresyou will find yourself immersed in the Muzzanacountryside. Here you can choose two differentpaths: either continue along the SMALL routewhich will take you on a walk through thecountryside bordering the forest and, with asmall detour, you will reach the Rolaz Area, orcontinue along the LARGE route, as indicatedby the signs.The Rolaz Area (2) was the scene of the Riotsof Cormôr, an unusual strike that involved theunemployed, labourers and peasants of LowerFriuli who protested against the lack of workafter World War II. A wooden statue depictinga man with a shovel in his hand stands inmemory of these events. It is a symbol of thefortitude, sense of justice, resistance andsolidarity that animated the protagonists ofthe riots. Benches and a table are available inthe area for refreshment and relaxation.By choosing the LARGE route, you can cross thereal forest, starting from the Toronduze area(3). Here you can take a break and relax andrefresh at the fountain, view the informationsigns on the flora, fauna and history of civicand collective land tenures, sit at the tablesfor a snack, and admire the works of Land Artcreated by artists from different countries ofthe world. Nearby, there is also an apiary thatproduces honey from collectively held land inMuzzana.The LARGE route retraces a stretch of theRomea Strata, which is part of a network ofroutes that rethread the ancient pilgrimageroutes to Rome, Santiago de Compostelaand Jerusalem, and then the fully tree-linedStradon di Miez (4).
