THE “SAINT ROCCO RING” ROUTE89The circular route extends over the territoryof Osoppo for about 7 km, around the SanRocco Hill. This route guides you through thedistinctive features and characteristics of apeculiar area located in the centre of Friuli:the geographic area called “Campo di Osoppo-Gemona”. This is a flood plain completelysurrounded by hills and mountains andcharacterised by a substantial geodiversityand biodiversity.This area is also rich in historical-artisticpoints of interests. The route can be divided inthree sections. The first dirt-surfaced sectionlargely coincides with the embankment on theleft bank of the Tagliamento River. It goes fromColonia Park (1) to the point where variouspaths converge, and is only a short distancefrom Saint Rocco’s church (2), at the top ofthe homonymous hill. Ruins of an ancienthermitage, originally attached to the smallchurch, mentioned in various documents ofthe 13th century, can still be seen. From theembankment, you can grasp a view of the riverbed, that has preserved its original morphologyof intertwined channels, and the Carnic Prealpsprofiles in the background.The intermediate section consists of a smallring that develops in the most importantnaturalistic area of the itinerary. It unwindsalong dirt roads with a few small concretestretches, tracing the path of a network oftrails, hangars and emplacements used duringSecond World War by the German air force.Next up is the northern sector of the Springsof Bars (3), a spectacular humid environmentlisted in the Site of Community Importance“Valle del Medio Tagliamento”, with swampymeadows and hygrophilous woods, surprisinglyinterspersed with the steppe-like environmentof the dry lowlands. Different species of wildorchids that bloom in the Osoppo area fromApril to June can also be observed along theroute.The final section reaches and crosses the townof Osoppo, hit by the 1976 earthquake and,as per other towns in Friuli, rebuilt exactly tohow it originally was, demonstrating that thereconstruction motto in Friuli was “where itwas, how it was”.
