It - Sono una ragazza degli anni ’70. E sono tedesca.
Potrebbe sembrare strano che il direttore di una rivista
Made in Italy come Scimparello sia straniera, ma
io sono anche italiana. L’Italia è casa per me, lo è stata
fin dal primo incontro. Perché tutta questa manfrina?
Per spiegarvi come mai, in questa edizione dedicata
alla Poesia, io ne abbia scelto una tedesca degli
anni ’70. Leggevo molto allora. Soprattutto poesie.
Forse era di moda, o forse senza computer e social
network avevo meno distrazioni. O forse era solo che
lavoravo meno. Adesso cerco la Poesia altrove. Non
più nei libri ma dove posso vederla ogni giorno anche
lavorando dal mio ufficio. Negli alberi in giardino,
nella musica, nell’arte, nei bambini, ai quali basta un
nulla per commuovermi, nelle fotografie dei giovani
talenti che ricevo ogni giorno. Durante il lockdown
ho fatto il pieno di Poesia! E ora vorrei solo riuscire
a trasmettervi un po’ di quella Bellezza. Che è ovunque.
Nella vita che continua nonostante tutto e tutti.
E ogni volta ci lascia senza fiato.
en - I’m a 70’s girl. And I’m German. It might seem
strange that the editor in chief of a magazine Made
in Italy like Scimparello is a foreign one, but I am also
Italian. Italy is home to me, it has been since we first
met. Why all this rigmarole? To explain to you how
come that in this issue dedicated to Poetry, I chose a
German poem from the ‘70s. I used to read a lot back
then. Especially poems. Maybe it was fashionable, or
maybe without computers and social networks I had
fewer distractions. Or maybe it was just that I worked
less. Now I look for Poetry elsewhere. No longer in
books but where I can see it every day also working
from my office. In trees down in the garden, in music,
in art, in children, who need nothing to move me,
in photos of young talents I receive every day on my
computer. During the lockdown I got filled with Poetry!
And now I just wish I could pass on some of that
Beauty to you. Beauty that’s everywhere. In life that
continues despite everything and everyone. And every
time it leaves us breathless.

… ALWAYS SPEAKS THE UGLY TRUTH

It - Benvenuti cari bambini nel mondo sarcastico ma
pieno di humor di Zio Timo. Ma si sa, un po’ di ironia
non fa mai male. Quindi eccomi a dispensare
consigli, utili e preziosi. Di poesia si parla qui… rime
di anni e anni fa che nascondono significati reconditi.
Ma come facciamo a parlare di poesia? Mica è
un oggetto, la poesia è dentro di noi: nell’abbraccio
della mamma, nel piatto preferito cucinato dalla nonna,
nel fuoco che scoppietta nel camino d’inverno….
oddio cosa mi succede? Non vorrei diventare troppo
per l’appunto poetico. Quindi passiamo a una bella
lezione. Dalle mie parti è abitudine che alla vigilia di
Natale il più piccolo della famiglia reciti una poesia
a tavola. Il premio? Una lauta paghetta dallo zio più
generoso. Questa tradizione ha suscitato in me una
forte inspirazione per l’unica poesia che abbia mai
scritto, eccola qui, solo per voi.

world of Zio Timo. But you know... a little irony
is never wrong. So here I am to give you useful and
precious advices. Poetry is the matter… rhymes from
years and years ago with some meaning hidden between
the lines. But how can we talk about poetry? It
is not an object and it is not a thing. Poetry is within
us: in mommies’ hugs, in our favorite dish cooked by
granny, in the fire crackling in the fireplace. Oh gosh!
What’s happening to me? I didn’t mean to become
too much poetic. So here you are my lesson
It’s a tradition of the place in which I grew up that
the youngest of the family is invited to recite a poem
on Christmas Eve. The prize? A hefty pocket money
from the most generous uncle. This ritual aroused in
me a strong inspiration for the only poem I have ever
written, here it is, just for you.
Si presentò un giorno un’idea,
le dissi piacere e scordai il suo nome.
Ne venne un’altra il giorno appresso
ma come prima non le prestai attenzione.
La terza volta, stizzito da quell’insistenza,
presi la penna per tradurla in parole.
Lessi e rilessi quell’idea sulla carta
e rimasi stupito da una strana impressione.
L’idea era lì, in poche frasi,
e, decisamente, aveva acquistato un certo valore.
Da allora scrissi tutte quelle che mi vennero in mente,
finché un giorno non le vendetti al miglior offerente.
Fatene buon uso! ;)
One day an idea showed up,
I said pleasure but forgot her name.
Another came the following day
but as before no attention I payed.
Third time in a row, bothered I was,
I took the pen translating her into words.
I read and re-read that idea on the note
and, a bit amazed, I stood there alone.
The idea was there, in a few sentences,
and, definitely, she had acquired some senses.
Since then I wrote everything that I was thinking,
until one day I sold them at the highest bidding.
Make good use of it! ;)

mostra bellissima sul più
grande street artist del mondo:
Banksy! Graffiti, murales e
tanti topini protagonisti che
ti faranno ridere. Se trovi
l’ispirazione giusta puoi farti
comprare le bombolette spray
e fare un disegno sulla parete
del soggiorno... mandami una
foto poi, che mi faccio anche io
due risate.

No fiere, no viaggi, no foto di nuovi incontri o
eventi mondani in questo numero. In otto mesi il
mondo è cambiato e salutarsi anche solo con una
stretta di mano sembra un traguardo lontano.
Ma noi siamo qui. Con la stessa voglia di
divertirci e farvi divertire. E di pensare al bello
invece che al brutto. E il bello è che siamo
diventati tutti migliori. Che abbiamo capito che
da soli non si va da nessuna parte.
Che si vince solo uniti.
Che competere non vuol dire
essere rivali ma alleati.
Che la gelosia fa male, impedisce
di imparare, di crescere, di
divertirsi, di vivere con leggerezza.

LOCKDOWN BABIES
it - “Dopo settimane in cui non avevo potuto usare la mia
macchina fotografica, ne sentivo terribilmente la mancanza.
Così ho dato vita ad un sogno: quello di fotografare le
mamme che avevano partorito durante il lockdown con i
loro bambini appena nati. Attraverso questo progetto, e grazie
alla loro generosità, al tempo che mi hanno dedicato e
alla pazienza che hanno avuto, ho potuto fotografare madri
in tutto il mondo: in Argentina, in Galles, a New York, in Inghilterra e
a Barcellona. Le immagini sono state scattate usando Facetime, naturalmente
con la mia Canon.”
E’ così che, sui social, Sarah Winborn presenta il suo lavoro. L’idea
semplice e geniale di una fotografa appassionata del suo lavoro che nel
momento in cui succede l’impensabile e il dramma di una malattia cattiva
e sconosciuta travolge il mondo, trova il modo di testimoniare la forza
della vita, l’origine della gioia. Mentre ogni sera milioni di persone spaventate
e prigioniere nelle loro stesse case fanno i conti con quello che è,
a tutti gli effetti, un bollettino di guerra, lei invece, decide di testimoniare
altro, di documentare altro. Investe nella speranza. E nel futuro. Cerca
le nuove mamme. Quelle che hanno partorito proprio quando il mondo
sembrava destinato a scomparire. Quelle che non hanno potuto essere
abbracciate o festeggiate dai loro cari, quelle che sono dovute ritornare
a casa in fretta, protette da guanti e mascherine. E che una volta a casa
si sono ritrovate sole con i loro compagni a gestire ciò che quasi nessuna
immaginava di riuscire a fare da sola. Eppure ce l’hanno fatta. E forse
sono anche le mamme più fortunate. Così almeno sembra da quello che
racconta la maggior parte di loro. Due genitori che si aiutano, che si
confrontano. Due genitori che il loro bambino lo vivono insieme: ogni
giorno, ogni ora. La famiglia come è all’origine. Loro e lui, o lei. I fratelli
e le sorelle. E solo dopo, tutti gli altri. Gli scatti di Sarah Winborn sono
autentici, senza trucchi, senza ritocchi. I visi delle mamme sono radiosi
ma stanchi, quelli dei bambini appena nati ancora grinzosi. Sono scatti
poetici, che commuovono e fanno riflettere. Perché niente è più importante
dell’affettività. A noi di Scimparello piace pensare che questi bambini,
queste famiglie, sono l’inizio del Nuovo Mondo.

LOCKDOWN BABIES
en - “Following weeks of seriously missing using my camera
I dreamt up a portrait project photographing mothers
and their new-born babies delivered during the lockdown.
Through this project and the generosity of these ladies to
give me some of their time and patience, I have been able
to reach out to mothers so far in Argentina, Wales, NYC,
England and Barcelona. The images were shot using Face
time with my Canon camera.”
That’s how, on social media, Sarah Winborn presents her work. The
simple and ingenious idea of a photographer passionate about her work
that in the moment the unthinkable happens and the drama of a bad
and unknown disease overwhelms the world, finds a way to witness the
power of life, the origin of joy. While every night millions of frightened
people imprisoned in their own homes come to terms with what it is, to
all intents and purposes, a war bulletin, she instead decides to testify to
something else, to document something else. She invests in hope. And
in the future. She seeks the new mothers. Those who gave birth just
when the world seemed destined to disappear. Those who could not be
embraced or celebrated by their loved ones, those who had to return
home quickly, protected by gloves and masks. And once they got home
they found themselves alone with their companions to manage what
almost no one of them imagined could do on her own. And yet they
did it. And maybe they are also the luckiest moms. So, at least, it seems
from what most of them say. Two parents helping each other, confronting
each other. Two parents really living their baby together, every day,
every hour. The family as it is at the origin. Them and him, or her. The
brothers and the sisters. And only after, everyone else.
Sarah Winborn’s shots are authentic, no tricks, no touches. The mothers’
faces are radiant but tired, those of new-born children still wrinkled.
They are poetic shots, they move and make you reflect. Because nothing
is more important than affection. At Scimparello we like to think that
these babies, these families, are the beginning of the New World.

It - Chi non ha mai sofferto nel liberarsi di un oggetto,
alzi la mano! E non mi sto riferendo a oggetti cari
come il classico orsacchiotto di peluche, o un libro
particolarmente amato, o qualcosa che ci ricorda una
persona cara. Sto parlando di oggetti come un’auto o
una vecchia televisione che per anni ci hanno servito
con fedeltà. È solo un’accozzaglia di ferro e fili, ci si
dice. Eppure si soffre.
E allo stesso modo capita di passare davanti a qualcosa,
per caso, e sentire dento un’emozione simile ad un
innamoramento. Osservare un oggetto e, d’un tratto,
vederlo. Sentire che in qualche modo ci parla. Che
non si sa come, né perché ma c’è un legame. È quello
che è successo a Marco e Cletta. Lei era una biciclettina
abbandonata in un ferrivecchi e quando lui l’ha
vista… bum! era fatta. È scoppiato l’amore. A dire
la verità lui ha cercato di svignarsela e allontanarsi
come se niente fosse, ma mentre usciva lei ha parlato:
“Davvero mi lasci qui?” gli ha chiesto. Allora lui è
tornato sui suoi passi e l’ha portata a casa. E da allora,
ogni volta che il lavoro glielo permette (Marco è un
fotografo di moda e gira il mondo come una trottola)
la porta con sé. Le cambia colore, la agghinda come
una modella, la mette in posa e la fotografa sui set dei
suoi servizi. Prima del lockdown aveva collezionato
una serie non indifferente di scatti alcuni dei quali pieni
di poesia. Si sa, l’amore e la poesia vanno d’accordo.
Li teneva lì, senza uno scopo preciso. Aspettando
magari di farne un libro. Poi è arrivato il tornado che
ha sconvolto il mondo e quelle foto sono diventate il
suo mondo. Un modo per aiutarsi e aiutare gli altri.
Ogni giorno ne pubblicava una e raccontava la storia
che c’era dietro. Quello che lui e Cletta si erano detti,
dove erano stati, cosa avevano fatto. Tutti erano
chiusi in casa e l’unico modo per uscire era la fantasia.
Così Cletta è diventata amica di tanti bambini
che, ogni mattina, aspettavano con trepidazione una
nuova avventura. Sono stati giorni spassosi per lei e
Marco. E lui doveva tenerla a freno perché Cletta era
un fiume in piena di pensieri e parole. Sono andati
un paio di volte nello spazio e ritorno, e poi al mare,
in montagna, nel bosco, in Francia, in Groenlandia a
Woodstock, in crociera. Hanno volato nel cielo, corso
nei campi di papaveri, sono tornati persino a scuola.
Basta poco per sognare ad occhi aperti. E poi, alla
fantasia, il virus gli fa un baffo!
en- Who has never suffered in getting rid of an object,
raise his hand! And I’m not referring to dear items
like the classic teddy bear, or a very special book, or
something that reminds us of our beloved ones. I’m
talking about objects like a car or an old television
that have served us faithfully for years. It’s just a jumble
of iron and wire, we say. Yet we suffer.
In the same way happens to pass by something, someday,
by chance, and feel inside an emotion similar to
the one of falling in love. Happens to observe an object
and, suddenly, see it. Feel that, somehow, it speaks
to us. We do not know how, nor why but there is a
link. That’s what happened between Marco and Cletta.
She was a little bicycle abandoned in a junk shop
and when he saw her… boom! the love broke out.
To tell you the truth, he tried to sneak out and walk
away like nothing happened, but on the way out, she
spoke. “Do you really leave me here?” she asked him.
So, he went back and brought her home. And since
then, every time the work allows it (Marco is a fashion
photographer and travels the world like a spinning
top) brings her with him.
He changes her colour, arranges her like a model,
poses her and photographs her on the sets of his
shootings. Before the lockdown he had collected a series
of shots, some of which full of poetry. You know,
love and poetry always go together. He uses to keep
them, without a precise purpose. Maybe waiting to
make a book out of them. Then came the tornado
that shook the world upside down and those photos
became his own world. A way to help himself and
others. Every day he published one and told the story
behind it. What he and Cletta had said, where they
had been, what they had done.
Everyone was locked in their house and the only
way out was fantasize. So Cletta became friends with
many children who, every morning, eagerly awaited a
new adventure. They were very fun days for her and
Marco. And he had to hold her back because Cletta
was a river full of thoughts and words. They went a
couple of times in space and back, and then to the
seaside, up to the mountains, in the woods, to France,
to Greenland, to Woodstock, on a cruise. They flew
in the sky, ran in the fields of poppies and even went
back to school. It takes little to daydream. And then,
the virus couldn’t hold a candle to fantasy!

It - Essere una stylist non è poi così complicato. Tutti
noi siamo un po’ stylist di noi stessi, in fondo. Più
difficile è essere una stylist di talento. E per talento
non intendiamo solo metter insieme i capi con gusto e
originalità ma inventare nuove strade per farlo. Farsi
venire delle idee, osservare le tendenze della moda ma
anche quelle dell’arte, del cinema, della fotografia. E
poi le città, le strade, gli edifici, le persone, le luci. Ascoltare
la musica e anche i rumori. Perché lo styling,
per Camilla Ceriani, è il modo in cui la moda racconta
una storia. È trasmettere qualcosa attraverso la
scelta di uno stile. Tutto può essere di ispirazione, anche
un piccolo dettaglio. Con la tecnica del collage, e
facendo indossare ai suoi personaggi preferiti dei film
o delle serie TV gli ultimi look di sfilata, Camilla li
reinventa ogni volta rendendoli attuali e divertenti. E
come Mulan - l’eroina del famoso film della Disney,
che è anche la sua preferita - si fa venire mille idee
per portare a termine il suo compito nel rispetto
degli altri, anche Camilla cerca in ogni collage di
creare outfit e look che rispecchino il suo gusto e
stile ma anche la personalità del personaggio scelto.
Così durante il lockdown non si è fermata ma, al
contrario, si è sforzata di rendere quella forzata inattività
un momento “utile”: utile a scoprire nuovi
modi per esprimere la sua creatività e un’occasione
per sviluppare sempre di più l’idea dei collage. E
guardare dentro le cose. Per piccole che possano
sembrare. Perché è lì che è nascosto il segreto della
felicità, come recita la sua poesia preferita, “Gli
auguri dell’innocenza” di William Blake:
Vedere un mondo in un grano di sabbia
e un universo in un fiore di campo,
possedere l’infinito sul palmo della mano
e l’eternità in un’ora.
Ci sono tanti significati celati dietro queste parole ma
più di ogni altra cosa c’è tutta l’immensità dell’universo,
e tutta la sua semplicità. E quante meraviglie si
possono immaginare!

en - Being a stylist isn’t that complicated. We’re all a
bit of a stylist ourselves, after all. More difficult is being
a talented one. And by talent we not only intend
to put clothes together with taste and originality but
to invent new ways to do it. Coming up with ideas,
observing fashion trends but also those of art, cinema,
photography. And then the cities, the streets, the
buildings, the people, the lights. Listen to the music
and also the noises. Because styling, for Camilla Ceriani,
is the way for fashion to a story. It is transmitting
something through the choice of a style. Everything
can be inspiring, even a small detail. With the technique
of collage, and dressing her favorite movies
characters with the latest fashion show looks, Camilla
reinvents them every time making them modern and
fun. And like Mulan - the heroine of the famous Disney
movie, which is also her favorite one – who gets
a thousand ideas to carry out his task with respect
to others, Camilla also tries in every collage to create
outfits and looks that reflect her taste and style
but also the personality of the character she chooses.
So, during the lockdown she didn’t stop but she
tried harder to make that forced inactivity a “useful”
moment: useful to discover new ways to express her
creativity and an opportunity to develop more and
more the idea of collages. And look inside things.
However small they may seem. Because that’s where
the secret of happiness is hidden, as his favorite poem
says, “Best wishes for innocence” by William Blake:
See a world in a grain of sand
and a universe in a field flower,
own infinity on the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour.
There are so many hidden meanings behind these
words but more than everything there is all the immensity
of the universe, and all its simplicity. And
how many wonders to be imagined!

Bisognava scrivere una poesia e spedirla in redazione. Questo avevamo chiesto ai nostri bambini.
Sicuri che ce la potessero fare. Che non avrebbero avuto bisogno dell’aiuto di nessuno perché la
poesia era già dentro di loro. Bastava far uscire anche una sola frase, anche senza rima, e sarebbe
stata perfetta. Avevamo ragione. Con qualche eccezione, ma avevamo ragione. Ne sono arrivate
parecchie di poesie e per la maggior parte sincere. Così ci siamo messe a leggerle tutte. E quando
notavamo qualche “aggiustatina” pensavamo a qualche genitore che, in buona fede, credeva di
essere solo d’aiuto. Così abbiamo selezionato ciò che ci sembrava venire davvero dal cuore di
un bambino. Un’emozione vera, anche se un po’ manipolata. Magari abbiamo sbagliato. Non
siamo infallibili. Siamo così innamorati dei bambini e consapevoli del loro infinito potenziale che
perdiamo il lume della ragione. A volte.

could do it. Knowing they wouldn’t need anyone’s help because poetry was already inside them. It was enough
to let out one simple sentence, even without rhyme, and it would have been just perfect. We were right. With
some exceptions, but we were right. Lots of poems came in and most of them were sincere. So, we started to
read them all. And when we noticed a few “fixes”, we thought of some parents who, in good faith, hoped they
were just helping. So, we selected what really seemed to come from a child’s heart. A real emotion, although a bit
manipulated. Maybe we’re wrong. We’re not infallible. But we are so in love with children and aware of their
infinite potential that we get a bit worked up. Sometimes.

Ci eravamo dimenticati della poesia.
Pensavamo fosse solo quella che

batosta per ricordarci che, invece, è
dentro di noi. E che se non riusciamo a

Così siamo andati a cercarla nei nostri

3 QUESTIONS TO THE STYLIST MADDALENA MONTAGUTI
QUALE E’ LA STORIA DIETRO LA STORIA?
Eravamo a Cape Town per un servizio pubblicitario e ci è venuta voglia di scattare
un editoriale che raccontasse una storia vera, che parlasse di quella cultura,
con bambini del luogo e solo capi vintage. Abbiamo immaginato due ragazzini in moto
alla ricerca di un luogo dove suonare, due piccoli jazzisti dall’animo poetico.
RICORDI UN MOMENTO CHE TI HA EMOZIONATO IN MODO PARTICOLARE?
I due ragazzini non erano modelli e non avevano mai fatto uno shooting di moda
in vita loro. All’inizio, uno dei due era molto emozionato e non credeva di essere all’altezza.
Gli siamo stati vicini cercando di metterlo a suo agio ed è stato bellissimo vedere
come piano piano prendeva fiducia in sé stesso e si lasciava andare.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY?
We were in Cape Town for an advertising shooting and we wanted to shoot an
editorial about a true story. An editorial that showed the culture of the Country,
with local children and only vintage clothes. We imagined two kids on
a motorbike looking for a place to play, two small jazzmen with a poetic soul.
DO YOU REMEMBER A MOMENT THAT PARTICULARLY MOVED YOU?
The two boys had never been models or done a fashion shooting in their life.
At first, one of them was quite scared and didn’t think he was good enough to do it.
We stood by him, trying to make him comfortable and it was
wonderful to see how slowly he took confidence in himself and let go.

While I was shooting CC in the long Mummymoon dress with the feathered neckpiece,
I was really moved. It was the anchor between girl to bird.

Avevamo tanti servizi fotografici. Tante immagini e tutte bellissime.
Ma come art director della rivista, mi mancava qualcosa “fatto a mano”.
RICORDI UN MOMENTO CHE TI HA EMOZIONATO IN MODO PARTICOLARE?
C’è sempre una storia d’amore dietro un disegno:
il ricordo di qualcosa, di qualcuno, di un momento.

We had many photo shootings. Many pictures and all beautiful.
But as the art director of the magazine, I was missing something “handmade”.

There is always a love story behind a drawing:
the memory of something, of someone, of a moment.

QUALE E’ LA STORIA DIETRO LA STORIA?
Il primo shooting dopo il lockdown abbiamo voluto esplorare le gioie semplici dell’infanzia,
l’essere vicini alla natura, quella sensazione di libertà! Giocare agli esploratori trasformando
il prato in qualcosa che confina con l’irreale - del tipo i bambini che caddero sulla terra.
RICORDI UN MOMENTO CHE TI HA EMOZIONATO IN MODO PARTICOLARE?
Tempo fa, con i miei genitori, per qualche anno abbiamo vissuto in una fattoria hippie, e tutti i
campi e i prati intorno erano miei. Quella completa libertà, quell’abbondanza, si sono impresse
vivamente nella mia memoria ed erano queste le emozioni che volevo riflettere nella storia.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY?
Shooting at the end of lockdown we wanted to explore the simple joys of childhood,
being close to nature, that feeling of freedom. Playing explorers transformed the meadow
to something bordering on the unreal - the kids that fell to earth.
DO YOU REMEMBER A MOMENT THAT PARTICULARLY MOVED YOU?
My parents took a hippie route and for a couple of years we lived on a farm,
and the fields and meadows we’re all mine. That complete liberty and abundance
etched itself in my memory, something I wanted to reflect in this story.

QUALE E’ LA STORIA DIETRO LA STORIA?
Mi piaceva l’idea che i personaggi potessero volare via con un soffio di vento
e con l’utilizzo del collage, combinando carta colorata e immagini fotografiche,
ho cercato ad appiattire il più possibile i volumi, pensando proprio
a quando la carta volteggia nell’aria con leggerezza.
L’ILLUSTRAZIONE PREFERITA FRA QUELLE DEL SERVIZIO?
Sono particolarmente affezionato al bambino con la felpa a fiori e
pantaloni arancioni per l’espressione del suo sguardo. Ma soprattutto per i capelli blu!

I liked the idea that the characters could fly away with a breath of wind and with the use
of collage, combining colored paper and photographic images, I tried to flatten
the volumes as much as possible, just thinking about when paper twirls in the air lightly.
DO YOU REMEMBER A MOMENT THAT PARTICULARLY MOVED YOU?
I am particularly fond of the child with the floral sweatshirt and orange pants
for the expression because his look. But especially for the blue hair!

It was the first shooting after Covid pandemic for the 3 kids models,
who worked together before for The Campamento campaign,
and the happiness to meet again after the lockdown.

A special moment was to see the kids between hugs and smiles!

tutto questo non c’era, c’era quasi

che per loro cuciva l’abito dei nostri

Back in time. When we played with dolls,
there were clothes to change, handbags, and
slippers, and a look for every occasion. And
if there were not such things, there was almost
certainly a grandmother, or a mother, who
would sew, for them, the dress of our dreams.

Qual è la storia dietro le Dolls?
È una storia d’amore: l’amore del parlare attraverso il design e del fare,
l’amore per la moda e i dettagli.
Ricordi un momento divertente per quanto riguarda la storia delle Dolls?
Diciamo che stavo “giocando e divertendomi” mentre disegnavo
la prima collezione di bambole. Ho proiettato tutto il mio amore per la moda
nel disegnare i loro primi abiti, non erano quelli tipici di una bambola.
Quale verso, di quale poesia, è sempre rimasto nel tuo cuore?
L’ultima frase di una poesia di Jorge Luis Borges intitolata “Buenos Aires”. La poesia parla della
mia città natale, una frase che mi accompagna per la sua crudezza, amarezza ma anche realtà.
No nos une el amor, Sino el Espanto. Ci unisce la paura, non l’amore.

What’s the story behind the Dolls’ story?
It’s a love story, love for speaking through the design and the making,
love for fashion and love for details.
Do you remember a fun moment regarding the Dolls’ story?
I was, let’s say, “playing and having fun” while designing the first collection
of the dolls for my brand. I projected my fashion design love in
designing the first outfits for the them, they weren’t the typical doll’s dresses.
Which line, of which poem, always stayed in your heart?
There’s a final line of a poem by Jorge Luis Borges titled “Buenos Aires”.
The poem speaks about my home city, the line that stays with me for its rawness,
bitterness but reality is. Love does not unite us, but fear.

It - Come definire Meri Meri? È difficile proprio come
definire una poesia. Proviamo a raccontarlo come un
mondo di gioco e divertimento, che è frutto della creatività
di Meredithe Stuart-Smith. Meri Meri (è il suo
nomignolo da piccolina) nel 1985, seduta al tavolo
della cucina con carta, forbice e glitter crea le prime
cartoline di auguri. Nell’arco di 10 anni i suoi stickers,
segnalibri e quaderni, dalle stampe fantasiose e
colorate fanno il giro del mondo. Ma Meri Meri è
anche una mamma alla quale piace organizzare feste
di compleanno per i suoi bambini e creare per l’occasione
costumi e maschere pieni di poesia, facile poi
lanciarli sul mercato. A metà degli anni ’90 è in corso
la rivoluzione dei cupcake, tutti vanno pazzi per questi
dolci, che si sfidano a colpi di decorazioni. Meri
Meri vince anche qui! Lei stessa afferma che le persone
creative hanno un difetto: non vogliono mai fare
la stessa cosa per lungo tempo. Per questo il catalogo
Meri Meri è infinito. Dal 1997 la troviamo a Cheltenham,
vicino Londra, dove ha trasferito la sede della
sua “Funmily” - la famiglia felice, composta dalle 21
mamme che lavorano con lei. Quello che più la rende
orgogliosa è che i suoi articoli non sono soggetti
alla stagionalità della moda, rimangono per sempre.

en - How to define Meri Meri? It’s hard just like defining
poetry. Let’s try to describe it as a world of play and
fun which was born from the creativity of Meredithe
Stuart-Smith. Meri Meri (her nickname as a child), in
1985, is sitting at her kitchen table with paper, scissors
and glitter, and creates the first postcards greetings. In
10 years her colorful stickers, bookmarks, notebooks
achieve success all around the world. But Meri Meri
is also a mother, who loves organizing her children’s
birthday parties making wonderful costumes. Easy to
launch them in the market. In the mid-90s what she
calls the cupcake revolution is ongoing, everyone goes
crazy for these delicious sweets, and the challenge is
played on the decorations. Meri Meri wins this battle
too! She claims that creative people have a flaw:
they never want to do the same thing for a long time.
Since 1997 she is in Cheltenham, close to London,
where she moved the headquarters of her “Funmily”
- the happy family, made up of 21 mothers who work
with her. What makes Meri Meri proud is that her
creations last forever. Upcoming project? An exciting
one: opening her own shop, showcasing flamingos in
the window, a bakery in the back, an ice cream parlor
inside ... and stop, we won’t reveal more, we won’t
spoil the poem…

la poesia!
Quali erano i tuoi giochi preferiti da piccola?
Mi piaceva giocare con il guardaroba di mamma e
nonna che era pieno di vestiti anni ’50.
Ricordo poi che facevo delle bambole di carta e per
loro ritagliavo i vestiti dalle riviste di moda. Quando
invece non avevo le mani impegnate, stavo all’aperto,
ero un vero maschiaccio.
Da dove prendi l’ispirazione per le tue collezioni?
Per la maggior parte dai viaggi. Nel 2019 siamo stati
al Salone del Mobile di Milano ed è stato un concentrato
d’ispirazione in una sola settimana. E poi nei
musei. L’esibizione al V&A su Mary Quant qualche
anno fa ci ha indicato la strada per nuove fantasie.
Nel 2018 ho visitato “Heavenly Bodies” al Met di
New York e sono stata attratta dall’idea delle ali d’angelo
e di fata.
C’è un personaggio delle fiabe al
quale ti senti legata?
Glenda, la buona Strega del Nord del Mago di Oz, il
mio film preferito.
Da Los Angeles a Cheltenham
(vicino Londra). Perché ti sei trasferita?
Perché ho sposato un inglesissimo Englishman (pensate
ci siamo sposati a Westminster).
Which games you played as a child?
I loved playing in my mother and grandmother’s closets,
full of 50’s dresses. I remember making my own
paper dolls and cutting out clothes for them from fashion
magazines. When I wasn’t dressing up or doing
crafty things, I was running around outside. I was a
tomboy.
Where do you draw inspiration
from for your collections?
Much of our inspiration comes from traveling. In
2019, Salone del Mobile in Milan was truly the most
inspiration in one week we had ever experienced. And
also in exhibitions. Seeing the Mary Quant display at
the V&A a few years ago reinforced our move to play
with more patterns. In 2018, I was overwhelmed with
ideas for angel and fairy wings at the Heavenly Bodies
exhibition at The Met.
Is there a fairytale’s character
you feel particularly linked to?
Glenda the Good Witch of the North from The Wizard
of Oz, hands down, my all time favorite film.
From Los Angeles to Cheltenham,
close to London. Why did you move?
Because I married a very English Englishman. We
were actually married at Westminster Abbey.
If you have to choose just one item
of your infinite range, which would it be?

Se dovessi scegliere solo un oggetto
dal tuo catalogo quale sarebbe?
Impossibile rispondere. Al momento la bambola Mia
con il suo tepee arcobaleno.
La meraviglia è il cuore di Meri Meri.
C’è stato posto per qualcosa di meraviglioso
durante il lockdown?
L’unica cosa che ho fatto durante il lockdown è stato
infornare e mangiare.
Ora la parte difficile… devi scegliere fra:
sirene e unicorni? Farfalle e fenicotteri?
Argento e oro? Palloncini e ghirlande? Glitter
e fiocchi? Halloween e Natale?
Gli unicorni vanno e passano di moda, ma sono sempre
magici. I fenicotteri sono favolosi, vengono prima
delle farfalle. Adoro il calore e il luccichio dell’oro.
Palloncini, ghirlande, glitter e fiocchi… devono per
forza stare insieme per una grande festa. Halloween,
in America, è un momento magico per i bambini!
La cosa che non può mancare a una festa?
La torta.
Fra tutte le poesie di tutti i poeti del mondo,
quale è la tua?
C’è così tanta buona poesia e io sicuramente non ne
leggo abbastanza. La mia preferita se devo scegliere è
quella di Pablo Neruda.

Wonder is the core of your label, did you find place
for it during lockdown?
All I did during lockdown was bake and eat.
A difficult one… you have to choose
between: Mermaids or unicorns?
Butterflies or flamingoes? Silver or Gold?
Balloons or garlands? Glitters or Ribbons?
Halloween or Christmas?
Unicorns go in and out of fashion but they are always
magical. Flamingoes are such fabulous creatures, they
have to come before butterflies. I love the warmth and
glimmer of gold. Balloons, garlands, glitter and ribbon
they all have to go together to make a great party.
Halloween, in America, it is the most magical holiday
for children!
The unmissable thing for every party?
Cake of course.
Of all the poems and all the poets you know in the
world, who is your favourite?
There is so much good poetry and I certainly don’t
read enough of it. My favourite (if I must choose)
would be Pablo Neruda.

It - Maja Akraberg Siller è nata in un paese che molti
di noi possono vedere solo da uno schermo, in un
film, forse, o in un documentario su luoghi remoti
o sconosciuti. È nel Nord più profondo, in mezzo
all’Oceano Atlantico, fra Islanda e Norvegia, che sorgono
le Isole Faroe, dove i prati verdissimi ricoprono
ogni cosa, anche i tetti delle case, ma non c’è nessun
albero. In questa regione magica, affascinante e piena
di poesia cresce Maja, che da piccola gioca sulle
sponde dell’oceano ascoltando le fiabe della nonna e
guardando le pecore del nonno pascolare. Diventare
grande lì ha forgiato il suo carattere, la sua personalità
e, di conseguenza, la sua vita e la sua carriera. Nel
2011 fonda il suo brand di abbigliamento, a cui dà un
nome molto significativo: minimalisma. Ogni capo, di
ogni stagione è ispirato ai colori della sua infanzia: il
blu del cielo, il rosa dell’alba, il rosso dei tramonti o il
verde dei boschi. I tessuti sono naturali: lana merino,
cachemire e cotone. È una storia senza tempo quella
di minimalisma, una storia che Maja porta in giro per
il mondo e che qui ci racconta.
A pochi è dato crescere in una terra selvaggia
come quella in cui sei cresciuta tu. Quali
emozioni, legate alle tue origini, resteranno per
sempre dentro di te?
La Natura ha rappresentato una parte essenziale nel
crescere alle Isole Faroe, ed è una grande fonte di
ispirazione, alla quale cerco sempre di ritornare. In
quanto faroese sono stata sempre attratta dagli orizzonti
da superare e da qui il mio bisogno di viaggiare.
Quali sono state le fiabe della tua infanzia?
Mia nonna era una narratrice incredibilmente brava
230 e aveva una voce davvero armoniosa. Mi piaceva

most of us can only see from a screen, in a film, perhaps,
or in a documentary about remote or unknown
places. It’s in the deepest North, in the middle of the
Atlantic Ocean, between Iceland and Norway, that
the Faroe Islands rise, a land completely covered by
green meadows, even the roofs of houses, but with
no trees. In this magical and poetical country, Maja
grows up playing on the shores of the ocean listening
to her grandmother’s fairy tales and watching
her grandfather’s sheep grazing. Growing up there
has shaped her character, her personality and, consequently,
her life and career. In 2011 she found her
clothing brand, to which she gives a very significant
name: minimalism. Every outfit, of every season, is
inspired by the colours of her childhood: the blue of
the sky, the pink of the dawn, the red of the sunsets
or the green of the woods. The fabrics are all natural:
merino wool, cashmere and cotton.
It is a timeless story the one of minimalism, a story
that Maja carries around the world and that tells us
here.
To just a few people happens to grow up
in such a wild land like the one you were born.
Which emotions, linked to your origins, will
remain inside you forever?
Nature was a very big part of growing up on the
Faroe Islands, so of course, nature is a great source of
inspiration that I will always want to return to. And
as a child of a sea farer’s nation, I have always been
drawn toward the horizons and had a need to travel.
What were the fairy tales of your childhood?
My grandmother was an extremely good storyteller and

ascoltare i suoi racconti che in gran parte erano le
fiabe dei fratelli Grimm. Conosceva anche centinaia
di canzoni locali che mi cantava quando era l’ora di
andare a dormire.
Lunghi tramonti e albe lente, aurore boreali,
estati senza buio e lunghe notti invernali.
Quale è il tuo rapporto con la luce e i colori?
Le estati della mia infanzia erano lunghissime e ciò
significava giocare all’aperto per molto tempo. Gli inverni,
invece, erano bui e dedicati ai puzzles, alla lettura
e a tutte le attività da fare in casa. Nessuno, però,
prestava particolare attenzione a questi fenomeni, per
noi era così e basta. Adesso amo passare il Natale alle
Faroe. È il periodo più buio dell’anno, il sole spunta
verso le dieci del mattino ed è possibile vederlo alzarsi
all’orizzonte solo quando è davvero bel tempo.
Ma è così bello quando si riesce! Il gioco delle luci, i
toni che cambiano in continuazione quando cielo e
terra si incontrano! I colori dell’oceano che mutano
continuamente durante il giorno...
Oggi che vivi altrove, cosa ti manca
di più della tua terra?
La mia famiglia. E la Natura. L’odore dell’aria piena
di salsedine. Parlare la mia lingua e capire tutto, anche
quello nascosto fra le righe. Il cibo e in particolare
il pane scuro. E mi mancano le battute di spirito, e
incontrare gli amici per una birra e cantare tutti insieme.
Cosa avresti voluto conservare di
quando era bambina che invece hai buttato?
Non mi viene in mente nulla se parliamo di oggetti.
Se, invece, parliamo di rimpianti, avrei forse scelto di
rimanere ancora un po’ nella mia terra, “crescere” di
più, prima di trasferirmi in Danimarca a 18 anni, ed
essere totalmente indipendente.
Bordeaux, azzurro chiaro, giallo, verde, marrone,
blu, beige. Sono i colori delle tue collezioni
e delle tue isole. Cosa ti ispira di altri luoghi?
Di altre culture che hai incontrato?
Ho vissuto un po’ dappertutto, in grandi città come
Shanghai, Londra, Parigi e poi ancora Glasgow e
Marsiglia. Quando ho creato minimalisma, avevo appena
lasciato la Scandinavia, ed è stata la mancanza del
design scandinavo e della qualità dei tessuti che avevo
sempre conosciuto a casa, insieme alla necessità

She also knew a hundred (Faroese) songs by heart and
would sing for us when she brought us to bed.
Long sunsets and slow sunrises, northern
lights, summers without darkness
and long winter nights. What is your relationship
with light and colours?
As a child, long summers meant playing outside
much longer and dark winters were used for puzzles,
reading books and cosy indoor living. It was how it
was and we did not give it much attention. Today, I
love to be in the Faroe Islands around Christmas –
the darkest time of the year – the sun will rise very
late, around 10 am and we can see it coming up from
the horizon. By clear weather, of course. But it’s so
amazingly beautiful. The play of the lights, the tonein-tone
when sky meets horizon. The way the colour
of the ocean changes during the course of a day.
Today you live elsewhere, what do you
miss the most about your country?
My family! And the nature. The smell of the salty
air. Speaking the language and understanding everything;
also, between the lines. I miss dark bread and
food. And I miss the jokes and meeting for a beer and
singing together.
What would you like to have kept from your
childhood that you, instead, threw away?
In regards to things or objects, I can’t really think of
anything. If it’s like a reality by not living there anymore,
then I wish I had stayed longer maybe. Gotten
more ‘grown-up’ before I left for Denmark by the age
of 18 to be totally on my own.

I came here to meet you and ask if you would like

di vestire la mia bambina che ha fatto sì che creassi
minimalisma: un marchio che fonde proprio design
scandinavo e qualità dei materiali. Una cosa che ho
imparato dal mio girovagare è che nessuno ha la stessa
idea riguardo allo stile o sa se uno è migliore di un
altro. Ma un lavoro fatto bene è sempre apprezzato.
Quindi sono rimasta fedele all’idea iniziale: capi senza
tempo della migliore qualità possibile, stile nordico e
colori che possono abbinarsi di stagione in stagione.
I tessuti sono fondamentali nelle tue
collezioni: seta, lana merino, cotone organico,
alpaca, cashmere. Solo il meglio del meglio.
Se potessi averne a disposizione solo uno a quale
non potresti mai rinunciare?
Troppo difficile. Non rinuncerei a nessuno. Ma diciamo
che essendo cresciuta con la lana… quindi, se
proprio proprio devo…scelgo lei. E anche la seta, dai!
Per la tua prima collezione, hai chiesto
a tua madre di realizzare una limited edition
di maglie. Com’è stato lavorare con lei?
Mia mamma è sempre stata un grande supporto per
me, e sono certa che sia sentita orgogliosa di aver preso
parte al mio lavoro. È la miglior magliaia che conosca,
quando ero bambina mi chiedeva cosa mi sarebbe
piaciuto indossare ed era capace di creare un maglione
durante uno solo weekend. È stato un privilegio per
me coinvolgerla. Le sue maglie sono 100% cachemire
italiano e le ho chiamate Tausen, come lei.
Credo che il merito più grande di
tua mamma sia stato insegnarti la gioia che
può donare indossare un abito che ci piace.
Pensi di riuscire a trasmettere la stessa
emozione ai tuoi bambini?
Non sono sicura mi abbia insegnato proprio questo. Ma
di sicuro grazie a lei vedo il meglio nelle persone e ho
sempre accettato il fatto che siamo tutti diversi. È anche
quello che cerco di trasmettere ai miei figli. Che amano
indossare minimalisma e sono i miei migliori critici.

your collections and your islands.
What, instead, inspires you from other places
and other cultures you have met?
I have lived in many different places; from big cities
such as Shanghai, London and Paris to Glasgow and
Marseilles and spent more time away from the Faroe
Islands now than growing up there. When I started
minimalisma, I had just moved away from Scandinavia,
so it was a mixture between missing Scandinavian
design and the good qualities that I had gotten so
spoiled with in my previous position and the sudden
need to dress my own little child, that made me build
up minimalisma, which incorporates exactly that.
Minimalistic Scandinavian design combined with the
finest qualities. What I learned from my travels is that
nobody has the same idea of what if the best style –

Fabrics are so essential in your collections!
Silk, merino wool, organic cotton, alpaca,
cashmere. If you could only have to choose one,
you’ll never give up on…
Oh, that’s a hard one. I love them all and find these
are the best qualities there are. And surely, I will
never give up on any of these! But having grown
up with wool, I have to say our merino wool basics.
And the silk. And.. :)
For your first collection, you asked
your mother to knit herself a limited edition.
How was it like working with her?
My mom was always very supportive of my work and
I guess she felt really proud to be part of my business.
She was the best knitter I know. She would ask me
what I like and what she could knit for me. And do
it on the weekend. It was truly a privilege for me to
work with her. The sweater was made in 100% cashmere
yarn that I bought in Italy and was named Tausen
as it’s my mom’s birth name.

Oh mamma mia! Che difficile. Riesco a trovare la
poesia nel cielo, nei boschi, nella musica. Sono ispirata
da citazioni di Kierkegaard, Andersen, della Bibbia,
di Coelho. Ma c’è una raccolta dalla quale ogni
giorno leggo una poesia ai miei bimbi. Si tratta di
Children’s poems di Hans A. Djurhuus, uno dei poeti
faroesi più famosi. Al momento la mia preferita è
“Ein Firvaldur” (Una farfalla).

Of all the poems and all the poets you know
in the world, what is your favourite?
Gosh, that’s a difficult one! I find poetry in the skies,
in the woods and in music. I am guided by quotes
by Soeren Kirkegaard, HC Andersen, the Bible and
Paulo Coelho, but if I should mention one poem I
repeat almost every day, it would be the Children’s
poems of Hans A. Djurhuus. He’s one of the most
famous poets from the Faroe Islands and I sing to my
kids from his collection every night. My favourite at
the moment is “Ein Firvaldur” (A Butterfly). 235

Setenta balcones y ninguna flor

Durante la scuola, in Argentina, ho studiato una poesia degli
anni ‘30, “Setenta balcones y ninguna flor” di Baldomero
Fernandez Moreno, che mi è stata d’ispirazione per questo
disegno. Racconta di un edificio in Avenida Corrientes, a
Buenos Aires, che aveva ben settanta balconi e nemmeno una
pianta o un fiore. Così mi piacerebbe che i bambini
(e anche le loro mamme!) aggiungessero tante piante e fiori a
questi balconi, per dare loro vita e gioia.
When I was at school, in Argentina, I studied a poem of the 30ies,
“Setenta balcones y ninguna flor” by Baldomero Fernandez Moreno,
that has inspired me for this drawing. It’s about a building in Avenida
Corrientes, in Buenos Aires that used to have seventy balconies and not even
a plant or a flower. So, I would love the kids (and their mothers too), to add
lots of plants and flowers to give life and joy to those empty balconies.
