It - Il mio primo calendario dell’avvento l’ho ricevuto
a tre, forse addirittura a due anni. Lo regalava a me
e ai miei fratelli zia…, che non era davvero una zia
ma la vicina di casa: una signora gentile che sorrideva
sempre. Mamma mia, come mi piaceva il Natale allora!
Lo aspettavo fra mille preparativi: i biscotti alla
cannella a forma di angeli, la corona dell’avvento con
il pino e le bacche rosse, le bucce dei mandarini a seccare
sui caloriferi, il pan di zenzero in forno: la casa
si riempiva di profumi meravigliosi. E ogni mattina,
naturalmente, aprivo uno sportellino del mio calendario
e mangiavo un cioccolatino. Mi piace ancora
oggi il cioccolato ma quello… quello era speciale.
Non ne ho mai più assaggiato uno così buono. Ricordo
che un anno, mio fratello ha aperto di nascosto
qualche porticina del mio calendario, si è pappato i
miei cioccolatini e poi le ha richiuse per bene. Che
monello!! Non vi dico quanto ho pianto quando l’ho
scoperto. Fortuna che qualche giorno dopo, alla vigilia,
è arrivato l’albero e mia mamma, per consolarmi,
mi ha permesso di accendere le candele con cui lo
aveva decorato. Candele vere! Sembra preistoria
a raccontarlo ora, ma era bellissimo! Quando sono
cresciuta ho cercato di tenere vive alcune tradizioni.
Non le candele vere sull’albero naturalmente, troppo
pericoloso, ma ho sempre la corona dell’avvento e il
calendario. Prima per i miei figli, poi per i nipoti ed
oggi per tutti i bambini di Scimparello!
BUON NATALE!
en - I received my first Advent Calendar when I was
three, maybe even two years old. Aunty…, who was
not really an aunt but a sweet neighbor lady, used
to give it to me and my siblings. Mamma mia! how
much I loved Christmas back then! I waited for it
making lots of preparations: cinnamon biscuits in the
shape of angels, the advent wreath with pine and red
berries, the mandarin skins drying on the radiators,
the gingerbread in the oven: the house was filled with
wonderful scents. And every morning, of course, I
would open up a window in my calendar and eat
the chocolate inside. I still like chocolate today but
that one... that one was special. I’ve never tasted anything
so good anymore. I remember that one year,
my brother secretly opened up some windows of my
calendar, ate the chocolate and then closed the doors
properly. What a brat!! I can’t tell you how much I
cried when I found out. Luckily, a few days later, on
Christmas Eve, the tree arrived and my mother, to
console me, allowed me to light the candles she’d
decorated the tree with. Real candles! It seems prehistoric
to tell now, but it was so beautiful!
When I grew up I tried to keep some traditions alive.
Not the real candles on the tree, of course, too dangerous,
but I always made the advent wreath and the
calendar. Before for my children, then for my grand
children, and now for all the Scimparello kids!

IT’S A FAST COUNTDOWN

It - Quando è nata l’idea di questo Scimpalendario ;)
dell’Avvento il mio entusiasmo è salito alle stelle. Non
lo immaginerete, ma sono un gran patito del Natale.
Se me lo permettessero in casa, addobberei l’albero
già a Novembre, e ogni anno devo farmi forza per
attendere il giorno giusto in cui far risuonare Mariah
Carey a tutto volume, posizionare schiaccianoci qui e
lì sulle mensole e infornare biscotti a forma di renna.
Nel corso del tempo, poi, ho appreso tradizioni di cui
prima non sapevo… Sant’Ambrogio qui a Milano,
Santa Lucia che fa visita nelle case del Nord Italia
il 13 Dicembre… e le festeggio tutte perché sono a
favore della parità. L’Avvento con il suo calendario
di cassettini al cui interno si nascondono piccole sorprese
è entrato in casa mia qualche anno fa. È stata
Petra a spiegarmi per prima quanto fosse importante
nella cultura del Nord Europa: l’attesa del Natale con
il suo carico di gioia e il simbolismo rappresentato
dalle quatto candele che vengono accese una per ogni
settimana che precede il 25. L’anno scorso ho pensato
di agire con furbizia. Ho acquistato un meraviglioso
cero con ventiquattro tacche, una per ogni giorno dal
1 Dicembre alla Vigilia. Chiaro che andava acceso
ogni sera e poi spento prima che il fuoco bruciasse,
come dire, le tappe… E invece, prima sera del mese,
fiamma accesa, indigestione di biscotti di frolla, divano
e coperta con raffigurato Rudolph, uno a caso
dei film di Harry Potter in tv, e ho riaperto gli occhi
alla tacca numero 18! Ma d’altronde è Natale e tutto
viene perdonato, e quest’anno ci riprovo. AUGURI!
en - When the idea of ​this Advent Scimpalendar ;)
came up, I was so enthusiastic. You wouldn’t imagine,
but I’m a huge Christmas fan. If they let me at home,
I would decorate the tree in November, and every
year I have to force myself to wait longer to make
Mariah Carey sing out loud, place nutcrackers here
and there on the shelves and bake reindeer-shaped
cookies. Over time, then, I learned about traditions
that I did not know before... Saint Ambrose here in
Milan, Saint Lucia who pay a visit in Northern Italy
on December 13th… and I celebrate them all because
I am in favor of equality.
Advent with its calendar of drawers with little surprises
hidden inside made its first appearance into my
house a few years ago. Petra explained to me how important
is the Advent in Northern European culture:
the waiting for Christmas with its load of joy and the
symbolism represented by the four candles that are
lit one for each week preceding the 25th. Last year
I thought to be clever. I bought a wonderful candle
with twenty-four notches, one for each day from December
1st to Christmas Eve. Of course, it had to be
lit every evening and then put out before the fire, as
it’s said, would rush into things… And instead, first
evening of the month, flame lit, indigestion of shortbread
biscuits, sofa and a blanket featuring Rudolph,
Harry Potter on screen, and I opened my eyes to discover
flame on number 18! But on the other hand it
is Christmas and everything is forgiven, and this year
I will try again. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

it - C’era una volta un vestito. Si chiamava Josephine, come la protagonista di Piccole Donne, e siamo sicuri che
con il suo charme retro sarebbe piaciuto anche a lei. Era fatto di velluto bianco latte, che a noi ricordava la magia
della neve. Aveva maniche a palloncino e un colletto ricamato color crema. Il più grande desiderio di Josephine
era viaggiare: da Shanghai partire e raggiungere ogni angolo del mondo. Un desiderio diventato realtà! Ora a
Natale, Josephine è pronta a una nuova avventura, fare compagnia a una fortunata bambina che potrà indossarlo
nel giorno più bello dell’anno.
en - Once upon a time dress, called Josephine, as the protagonist of Little Women, and we are sure that with its
retro charm she would have liked it too. It was made of corduroy, in cream white which reminded us the magic of
snow. It had balloon sleeves and a cream-colored embroidered collar. Josephine’s greatest desire was to travel:
to leave from Shanghai and reach every corner of the world and reach every corner of the world. A wish that came
true! Now at Christmas, Josephine is ready for a new adventure, to visit a lucky girl who will be able to wear it on

PÉRO
it - L’abito di Péro è la scena di un racconto. I fiori sbocciano e ci regalano un trionfo di colori: rosso, rosa, arancio,
giallo. Li vediamo prendere vita e ci sentiamo Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie. Ma infatti, chi c’è lì tra i papaveri?
Sembra un amico del Bianconiglio! E quei cuori che spuntano fra le pieghe? Sono le orecchie di una tenerissima
scimmietta. Entrambi sembra si stiano preparando ad accogliere la protagonista della storia: la bambina che
indosserà il vestito e vivrà la sua fiaba di Natale.
en - Péro’s dress is the frame of a tale. The flowers bloom and give us a triumph of colors: red, pink, orange, yellow.
We can see them coming to life and we feel like Alice in Wonderland. But in fact, who is there among the poppies?
It looks like a friend of the White Rabbit! And those hearts that sprout between pleats? Those are the ears of a
very tender monkey. Both of them are keen to welcome the protagonist of the story: the little girl who will wear
the dress and live her Christmas fairy tale.

it - Ogni stagione ha il suo colore. Ma Molo non ce l’ha fatta a sceglierne uno su tutti. Ha tenuto fuori solo il bianco
e nero e ha preso tutto ciò che c’è nel mezzo: blu, verde, rosa, rosso, fuchsia, giallo, arancio per stamparli sul capo
invernale must-have, il piumino rainbow. Ricavato da materiali riciclati, è un toccasana contro il freddo più rigido
perché scalda anche gli occhi. Si abbina a ogni look e può essere indossato da tutti. L’arcobaleno non ha genere.

ripararsi dal freddo, ma morbidi e semplici. E con qualche dettaglio prezioso. Perché non tutti lo sanno, ma fate
e folletti sono piuttosto vanitosi.

it - Durante la stagione abbiamo incontrato le slippers Terry di Pèpè Children Shoes in un salotto di una casa del
quartiere Kensington a Londra, nelle sale di un palazzo viennese e anche in un atelier bohémien di Parigi. Non
avevano molta voglia di uscire, faceva troppo freddo e alle lunghe passeggiate preferivano di gran lunga l’ambiente
domestico. Ma questo è il periodo in cui danno sfoggio di sé, con il loro caldo e morbido velluto rosso imbottito
che richiama il Natale ad ogni passo.

Tutto cominciò quando un giorno
Yayoi Kusama, l’artista vivente più conosciuta
del Giappone, sentì dei fiori che le parlavano...
It all began when one day Yayoi Kusama,
Japan’s best-known living artist,
heard flowers talking to her…

it - Yayoi aveva dieci anni quando ebbe il primo episodio
di queste allucinazioni spaventose, che ancora
la perseguitano all’età di 92 anni. “Avevo pensato che
solo gli esseri umani potessero parlare, così fui sorpresa
di sentire le viole usare le parole. Ero così terrorizzata
che le mie gambe iniziarono a tremare”, ricorda
l’artista. Disegnare ciò che ha vissuto durante tali
incidenti, ha aiutato Yayoi Kusama ad affrontare le
sue paure. Vivere le sue installazioni immersive, specialmente
le sue Infinity Mirrored Rooms, è come un
viaggio cosmico su un altro pianeta... Oggi, la gente
di tutto il mondo fa file lunghe ore per vivere i suoi
ambienti magici.
Yayoi è nata nel 1929 in una città relativamente piccola
nell’entroterra giapponese. I Kusama, una ricca
famiglia giapponese, possedevano una fattoria di
semi, gestivano enormi vivai di piante e vendevano
i loro fiori in tutto il Giappone. Da bambina Yayoi
passava ore seduta con un album da disegno, immersa
in quegli infiniti campi di fiori, a disegnare. Sua
madre odiava l’idea che Yayoi diventasse un’artista.
Voleva che sua figlia studiasse l’etichetta, sposasse un
uomo d’affari e diventasse una casalinga tradizionale.
Distruggeva regolarmente le tele della figlia e le strappava
i disegni di mano prima che Yayoi potesse finirli.
La risposta della figlia: dipingeva di più e sempre più
velocemente, a volte producendo più di 70 acquerelli
al giorno. Ma per tutta la vita l’artista 92enne ha avuto
problemi di salute mentale. Per più di 40 anni ha
vissuto volontariamente in un ospedale psichiatrico a
Tokyo, dove dipinge ancora con incredibile velocità.
Poteva arrivare a lavorare anche per 50-60 ore consecutive,
un processo simile alla trance che lei chiama
un “incantesimo indescrivibile”. Il suo marchio
di fabbrica: i pois - che hanno l’energia del sole e la
calma della luna.
Nonostante la sua infanzia traumatica, Yayoi Kusama
era determinata a diventare un’artista. Quando
compì 29 anni, decise di lasciare il Giappone profondamente
conservatore degli anni 50 e nel 1958
si stabilì a New York City. “Il Giappone era troppo
piccolo, troppo servile, troppo feudale e troppo sprezzante
delle donne... la mia arte aveva bisogno di più
- illimitata - libertà”, ha spiegato così Kusama la sua
mossa assolutamente audace, e ha aggiunto: “Sono
la moderna Alice nel paese delle meraviglie, ma nel
paese delle meraviglie niente è come sembra”. Infatti
quando è arrivata in America parlava a malapena
l’inglese e la scena artistica maschile di New York, alimentata
dal testosterone, era piuttosto ostile e poco
accogliente. Anche la maggior parte delle galleriste
esitavano ad esporre le donne. Ha lottato contro gravi
difficoltà finanziarie. Ciononostante, Kusama si fece
da sola e già nei primi anni ‘60, la sua sfera altamente
politica e creativa comprendeva installazione, pittura,
scultura, happening e scrittura. Creò persino una
sua azienda di moda radicalmente avanguardista e i
media la celebrarono come ispiratrice del movimento
hippie e della controcultura. A volte il suo nome è apparso
più spesso nei media di quello di Andy Warhol.
Durante la guerra del Vietnam, le sue famose performance
Anatomic Explosions erano piene di messaggi
contro la guerra, contrastando la violenza con l’attivismo.
In una lettera aperta al presidente Richard Nixon,
Yayoi scrisse: “La nostra terra è come un piccolo
punto, tra milioni di altri corpi celesti, una sfera piena
di odio... in mezzo alle sfere pacifiche e silenziose. Io
e te cambiamo tutto questo... Non si può sradicare la
violenza usando più violenza”. Il racconto della carriera
di Kusama è un flusso continuo tra est e ovest,
di dialogo, scambio e rottura. Ma l’artista non è mai
rimasta ferma abbastanza a lungo perché le si potesse
appicciare un’etichetta.
Nel 1973, soffrendo di sovraesposizione e depressione,
Kusama tornò in Giappone. I suoi attacchi di
panico e le allucinazioni si ripresentarono e lei si ricoverò
in una clinica psichiatrica, si iscrisse a corsi
di arteterapia e non se ne andò più. “Ho dipinto,
disegnato e scritto dalla mattina alla sera tutti i giorni
da quando ero bambina”. Poi nel 1993 è arrivato
il suo grande ritorno alla Biennale di Venezia, dove
ha creato l’intero padiglione giapponese - dopo aver
rifiutato l’invito 30 anni prima. “Non mi riposo. Sono
un’insonne”, ammette Kusama, che ci ha aperto un
mondo di fantasia e libertà.

en - Yayoi was ten when she had the first episode of
these frightening hallucinations, which still haunt her
at the age of 92. “I had thought that only humans
could speak, so I was surprised to hear violets using
words. I was so terrified my legs began shaking”, the
artist remembers. Drawing what she experienced
during such incidents, helped Yayoi Kusama to deal
with her fears. Experiencing her immersive installations,
especially her Infinity Mirrored Rooms, feels
like a cosmic trip to another planet… Today, people
around the world queue for hours to experience her
magic environments.
Yayoi was born in 1929 in a relatively small town in
the Japanese hinterland. The Kusama’s, a wealthy
Japanese family, owned a seed farm, managed huge
plant nurseries, and sold their flowers all over Japan.
As a child Yayoi would spend hours sitting with a
sketch book immersed in those endless flower fields,
sketching. Her mother hated the idea of Yayoi becoming
an artist. She wanted her daughter to study
etiquette, marry a businessman and become a traditional
housewife. She would regularly destroy her
daughter’s canvases and snatch drawings out of her
hand before Yayoi could finish them. Her daughter’s
response: she painted more and ever faster, sometimes
producing over 70 watercolours a day. But throughout
her life the 92-year-old artist has experienced
mental health problems. For more than 40 years she
has lived voluntarily in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo,
where she still paints with incredible speed. She
has been known to work in 50 to 60 hour stretches, a
trance-like process she calls an “indescribable spell.”
Her trademark pattern: polka dots – which have the
energy of the sun and the calmness of the moon.
Despite her traumatic childhood, Yayoi Kusama was
determined to become an artist. When she turned
29, she decided to leave the deeply conservative Japan
of the 50s and in 1958 settled in New York City.
“Japan was too small, too servile, too feudalistic, and
too scornful of women…my art needed more - unlimited
- freedom”, explained Kusama her utterly
audacious move, and added, “I’m the modern Alice
in Wonderland, but in Wonderland nothing is as it
seems”. Indeed. When she arrived in America she
hardly spoke any English and New York’s testosterone
fuelled male art scene was rather hostile and unwelcoming.
Even most female art dealers hesitated to
exhibit women. She battled severe financial hardship.
Nevertheless, Kusama made herself and already in
the early 60s, her highly political and creative practice
encompassed installation, painting, sculpture, happenings,
and writing. She even set up her own radically
avant-garde fashion company and the media celebrated
her as an inspiration for the hippie movement
and counter culture. At times her name appeared
more often in the media than Andy Warhol’s. During
the Vietnam War, her notorious Anatomic Explosions
performances were full of anti-war messages, counteracting
violence with activism. During the Vietnam
war, in an open letter to President Richard Nixon,
Yayoi wrote: “Our earth is like one little polka dot,
among millions of other celestial bodies, one orb full
of hatred… amid the peaceful, silent spheres. Let’s
you and I change all that… You can’t eradicate violence
by using more violence.” The narrative of
Kusama’s career is one of ebb and flow between east
and west, of dialogue, exchange and rupture. But the
artist never stood still long enough for labels to stick.
In 1973, suffering overexposure and depression,
Kusama returned to Japan. Her panic attacks and
hallucinations returned and she admitted herself to
a psychiatric clinic, signed up for art therapy courses
and never left. “I have been painting, drawing and
writing from morning until night every day since I
was a child. Then in 1993 came her big come back
at the Venice Biennale, where she created the whole
Japanese pavilion - after having hijacked the Biennale
uninvited 30 years earlier. “I don’t rest. I’m an insomniac”,
admits Kusama, who opened for us a world of
fantasy and freedom.

idee. Gli artisti sono ribelli - ci aiutano veramente a vedere il mondo in un modo completamente
nuovo e non ortodosso!

Santa Claus asks his friends for help
in collecting letters. So many arrive,
that the North Pole mail office every
December is in danger of going haywire.
We give him a hand too, and when he
comes to visit (he often does so because
he’s a fan of Scimparello) we give him the
ones that arrive at our editorial office.
And we’re very careful to put them right
on top of all the ones he keeps in his
backpack. As you know, the first ones are
