Duckhams uses AI to bring
founder to life after 125 years
Duckhams, the original British motor oil since 1899, has employed some of the latest techniques in
AI animation to bring founder Alexander Duckhams to life to celebrate its 125th anniversary.
Working with a specialist animation
studio in the US, AI allows
Alexander Duckham to tell the
story of Duckhams’ British motor oil
legacy, from his pioneering roots to its
enduring excellence, as the company
enters the next growth phase with its new
leadership team.
For over a century, Duckhams has
pushed the boundaries of innovation,
constantly evolving to meet the demands
of the changing world. A simple dream
grew into a global symbol of innovation
and quality. Today, Duckhams represents a
legacy of resilience built on generations of
trust and craftsmanship, ready to face the
challenges of tomorrow.
In a specially commissioned video to
celebrate this remarkable milestone,
senior leadership team members, key
global distributors and winning motorsport
drivers Adam Smalley and Dan Cammish
share their stories of the Duckhams
legacy.
“The legacy of the Duckhams brand
stands for victory and triumph,” said
Chairman Jabir Sheth. “As we mark an
incredible milestone of 125 years, from
developing industry-leading motor oils
to sponsoring Formula 1 motorsport
champions, Duckhams has been at
the forefront of innovation, quality
and technological advancement. We
cherish our roots while embracing a
forward-thinking attitude. We are already
developing new oils for future mobility,
creating a seamless union where tradition
meets tomorrow’s future.”
The brand’s enduring legacy makes it
not only the trusted lubricant brand of
the past but also a contemporary winner
in today’s competitive landscape. The
company is expanding internationally
across continents through bespoke routeto-market
models, joint ventures, licensing
agreements and direct distributor
channels.
Duckhams Chief Marketing Officer
Rajat Moitra said, “It’s an exciting time
to be leading the marketing duties for
this 125-year-old juggernaut called
Duckhams. We are building the brand
through investments in motorsport and
digital communications. Duckhams and
motorsports have been synonymous
with each other along the brand’s legacy
of 125 years. This legacy began with the
land-speed record in 1948 and extends to
numerous F1, BTCC, British GT, Formula
Ford, and BRIC Superbikes championships
with celebrated drivers of yesteryear
like Colin Chapman, Ayrton Senna,
James Hunt, John Surtees and current
champions like Dan Cammish, Shaun Balfe,
Adam Smalley and Daryl DeLeon.”
For 125 years, Duckhams has been
a pioneer of product innovation and
excellence, carving a history of groundbreaking
achievements, from setting the
land speed record to developing Europe’s
first multigrade oil. This innovation
transformed lubrication technology
forever.
Today, Duckhams delivers highperformance
engine oils formulated to
keep engines of all ages moving. Their
passenger and commercial vehicle
lubricants are available in twenty-seven
countries across Europe, the Middle East
and Asia.

ONKAR CHAHAL
There’s not a lot of benefits of growing
old. You lose the hair you want but
grow hair where you don’t, amongst
other things. However you also have the
benefit of experience and cheap car
insurance, so a pretty good trade-off I
think?
Having grown up in the 80’s I saw proper
cars in proper colours such as yellow or
orange, with some questionable interiors
in brown or green! They also had some
fantastic decals applied to the sides,
boot or bonnet. Sometimes all of them,
sometimes none. And it’s hard to ignore
the whole vinyl roof movement!
However the point of this article is the
onwards march of technology. I have seen
and worked on cars with a single carb
through to twin or quad downdraught,
before moving onto multiple carbs. They
progressed into first mechanical fuel
injection systems with their timed pumps
and continuous injection which progressed
to sequential fuel injection before the
current direct injection.
The same for ignition systems, from
points and condensers through electronic
ignition modules inside the cap to the coil
on plug design.
These examples are the obvious ones
really, but have you thought about the
headlight?
In its original form it started off as a
flame inside a glass box which in turned
into a basic bulb inside a glass reflector.
The first modern technology applied was
halogen gas filled bulbs. Why halogen?
It reacted with the bulb filament to
produce a brighter glow. That was
cutting edge technology way back in
the day! The reflector became the next
focus of the design improvement as the
headlight became more important to the
frontal design of the modern car. Anyone
remember the BMW ellipsoid headlights?
No matter what the reflector design
offered, the bulb was always the limiting
factor to really efficient bright lights, right
up until the mid 90’s and the introduction
of the Xenon bulb. This was a huge step
forward in vehicle safety as they offered
an amazing improvement in the light
being offered and how far it travelled.
I’d seen the Xenon headlights as fitted
to Mercedes & BMW’s of the day, but I’d
never personally experienced them until a
Vauxhall Omega Elite I was given for a long
weekend by Vauxhall, something I’ll talk
about in a future article.
That was the light of choice for anyone
driving at night, offering an almost
daylight quality to the nocturnal driver.
Over the years they went from being a
very expensive option on high end cars
to being a standard fitment to a lot of
mainstream cars, and they did a fantastic
job in moving safety forward. Right up to
the introduction of the LED headlight. That
wasn’t the same step forward as the Xenon
bulb, but it did allow the manufacturers
to design smaller or slimmer headlights.
It also encouraged the technology of LED
Matrix headlights, where the LED’s could
turn on or off according to the vehicle
conditions, which was a similar step
forward.
That was then superseded by the laser
headlight. Now who doesn’t want laser
headlights on their car? Unfortunately, due
to the cost involved and the improvement
in LED design the laser is being phased
out. But how cool is having lasers on your
BMW?
The reason I talk about headlights this
month is I believe they have been one of
the biggest safety step forwards since the
airbag. In fact you could argue it’s more
important as it helps you avoid having an
accident in the first place. Unfortunately,
as people seem to have nothing to moan
about, the modern headlight is being
investigated for being too bright as they
can dazzle oncoming drivers.
Two things, firstly that’s the general idea
of a headlight and the brighter it is the
better and safer it is. Secondly, if you look
at the cars that dazzle you the most, from
my experience, it’ll probably be a Tesla.
Not a hater, just saying.

WORKSHOPSAFETY
“New Year’s Resolution: Make
Your Pits Safer with GripClad!”
Safety first! As an employer, keeping
the workplace safe isn’t just a box
to tick—it’s your responsibility.
You probably think you’ve done all
the checks, but have you really?
Inspection pits in workshops are
sneaky hazards—despite being
below ground, a tumble into one is
classed as a ‘fall from height.’ Who
knew?
The Health and Safety Executive reports over 7,000 injuries
and 33 fatalities in motor repair in the past five years, with 20%
stemming from slips and trips. Now imagine the awkward meeting
with HR after an avoidable accident.
Wooden Planks: The Old-School Hazard
Traditionally, pits have been covered with wooden planks. Great
idea… until they absorb every spill in the workshop, rot faster
than you’d like, and turn into a hazard themselves. Time for an
upgrade!
GripClad GRP Grating Covers: The Smart Safety Solution
GripClad has anti-slip safety covered and perfect for turning
your pit from perilous to practical.
Why GRP Grating Covers?
l Easy Fit, Customised for You: Designed to match your current
pit dimensions, they’re simple to install—just fit, place, and voilà.
l Walk This Way: With an embedded anti-slip surface, these
covers are safe to walk on. No slips, no trips.
l Light but Mighty: Stronger and lighter than traditional options,
they’re a breeze to remove and store. No backaches here.
l Corrosion-Free, Worry-Free: Resistant to salts, acids,
chemicals, and general wear-and-tear, these covers outlast steel
without warping.
l Low Maintenance, High Visibility: Cleaning is a doddle, and with
bold colours like yellow, green, or grey, they’re a visible reminder
to stay safe.

FixMyCar Launches
New Approved
Garage Network
in Partnership
with The Motor
Ombudsman
● FixMyCar reveals plans to launch new approved garage
network to amplify highest-quality garages on its
platform
● In partnership with The Motor Ombudsman (TMO),
all garages will be vetted to ensure they adhere to
TMO’s Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and
Repair.
● With a goal to increase transparency and consumer
trust in the aftermarket, FixRated will promote and
reward high-performing garages that drivers trust.
FixMyCar has unveiled plans to launch FixRated, a new approved
network of trusted garages. In partnership with The Motor
Ombudsman, the new programme will serve demands for business
and consumer servicing and repairs.
Following the substantial growth of the FixMyCar network,
FixRated will look to deliver even more value for FixMyCar
customers, providing them with a choice of garages that can meet
more specialist needs across aspects such as fleet and warranty
work, as well as improving trust and transparency to give drivers
more confidence in the booking process.
The new approved network will guarantee that all FixRated
garages are vetted for quality and reliability and adhere to
the Code of Practice established and enforced by The Motor
Ombudsman.
Garages that join FixRated will benefit from increased visibility
on FixMyCar’s website which was visited over 5 million times in the
last year and generated over 1 million car maintenance and repair
jobs. FixRated garages will be given a digital badge displayed on
their profile to enable drivers to easily identify them as part of this
high-quality new network within garage listings.
FixMyCar currently provides a simple online booking platform
for a wide range of car repair and maintenance jobs. From MOTs to
bodywork repairs. FixMyCar boasts a large network of over 15,000
garages, dealerships and mobile mechanics across the UK.
FixRated will sit within this wider network to amplify and
reward the most trusted garages on FixMyCar that maintain highstandards
and excellent customer service. As part of their FixRated
membership, garages must permit site assessments, be rated at
least 4 stars or above on Trustpilot or Google and be a member of
The Motor Ombudsman to ensure service quality.
The Motor Ombudsman’s complaint handling process will also be
provided as a benefit to FixRated garages and includes in-house
and impartial Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) service should
a complaint remain unresolved via their own internal complaintshandling
processes.
Interim CEO at FixMyCar, Amanda Webb, says: “We’re very
excited to be announcing plans for our new FixRated network
today, in partnership with The Motor Ombudsman. Having the
ability to call on the support, expertise, and resources of an
automotive authority like TMO, underlines our goal of elevating
industry standards. We look forward to working closely with them.
Garages continue to battle against an unfortunate reputation
for being unreliable in honesty and quality, a stereotype that is not
reflective of the many hard-working garages we work with every
day. FixRated is just one step we’re taking to help combat this for
the good garages we know are out there and we look forward to
welcoming and supporting those garages onto FixRated.”
FixMyCar expects the sign up of the first FixRated garages to
begin as early as January 2025 however from today, garages are
encouraged to register their interest in becoming part of the new
network to be one of the first to join.

LKQ Euro Car Parts
boosts customer focus
with new evolution
LKQ Euro Car Parts, the leading supplier of parts,
consumables and added value services to the UK
aftermarket, has announced a significant evolution
of its operations, designed to bring the company
even closer to its customers and enhance its
industry-leading operational capabilities.
Kevan Wooden, CEO of LKQ UK & Ireland
The development will see an increase
by a third of customer-facing account
manager positions, reflecting LKQ
Euro Car Parts’ desire to provide even more
frequent face-to-face contact and expert
guidance in solving customers’ business
challenges and facilitating growth.
In addition to the expansion of its account
management teams, LKQ Euro Car Parts
is introducing dedicated operational roles
to further strengthen its market-leading
position for parts availability and rapid order
fulfilment.
This move aims to create deeper domain
expertise within the organisation and
effectively splits formally dual account
management and operational roles into
discrete areas of specialisms, which will
be unique within the UK aftermarket.
Kevan Wooden, CEO of LKQ UK & Ireland,
commented on the changes: “This is all about
getting the best out of our people by allowing
them to focus on what they excel at.
“At the same time, the market is evolving
rapidly, and we need to reflect that by moving
to a model that is fit for the future and
capable of supporting our customers as they
lean into the opportunities and challenges of
tomorrow.
“By increasing the number of colleagues we
have in customer-facing roles, we’re giving
our customers more access to our expertise
and better support in their local branches –
all while doubling down on our operational
strengths to ensure we remain the industry
leader in getting the basics right.“
The new structure will create exciting
career development opportunities for
existing colleagues, with clear pathways for
progression in both sales and operations.
The changes include the creation of
new account manager positions, as well
as the introduction of Area Sales Manager
and Area Operations Manager roles. It also
involves an enhanced focus on operational
excellence in branch management, providing
new career progression opportunities for
existing colleagues. Some current operational
management roles have been replaced by
field-based and customer-facing roles.

2024 YEAR IN
REAR-VIEW
SUVS now the most popular car body style for Brits and Land
Rover Defenders surge in interest off the back of The Traitors
As the UK’s largest automotive platform for buying and selling new and used cars, Auto Trader attracted on
average over 82 million site visits and nearly 203 million advert views each month in 2024. With millions of
trusted data points at its disposal, Auto Trader has crunched the numbers to reveal what the automotive
market showed in 2024, including the most popular cars and the cultural trends that helped certain car
colours and brands to achieve lofty heights.
SUVS TOPS THE CHARTS: the SUV became the most viewed body
type in 2024 on the platform with 708 million views, dethroning the
hatchback which was the most popular body style last year. Hearses
were the least viewed body type with just 1,091 views.
ELECTRIC AVENUE: The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was the most popular new
electric car on the Auto Trader platform in terms of advert views
with around 536,000 in 2024. This was followed by the Kia EV9
with over 500,000 views and the Porsche Taycan which received
462,000 clicks.
PEAK PETROL: The Mercedes-Benz A Class was the fastest selling
petrol car of the year on Auto Trader this year, selling in just 17
days. With 18.7 million petrol cars currently on the road, Auto
Trader’s data reveals that we’ve now hit ‘peak petrol’ as the number
of petrol-powered cars in the UK car parc is set to decline as
motorists increasingly make the switch to electric.
QUADRUPLE FOR BLACK: for the fourth year in a row, black was
the most viewed car colour on Auto Trader in 2024, with over 600
million views. Grey was second with 467 million, followed by white
with 362 million.
HOLE IN ONE: the VW Golf remains a firm favourite for visitors
to the Auto Trader platform. It was the most popular used car of
2024 with 64 million advert views on the site, whilst the Land Rover
Range Rover was the most popular brand new car this year with
close to 2.2 million views.
BRAT GREEN SUMMER: Following the release of Charli XCX’s
acclaimed album ‘Brat’ in the summer, which got the world
embracing the vibrant ‘brat green’ colour, advert views for greencoloured
cars on the site increased by an impressive 24% in June
2024 compared to June 2023.
MOST UNUSUAL CAR LISTED: A unique 1969 Volkswagen Beach
buggy which was built and designed for American children’s TV
show The Bugaloos is currently on sale on the platform for just
under £20,000. The bizarre looking car features bug wings that flap
and a funky interior that will no doubt turn heads on the road.
FIESTA, FOREVER: Although production of the iconic Fiesta ended
last year, the hatchback was once again the most advertised car
on Auto Trader this year, with around 106,000 listings. The popular
Volkswagen Golf came in second with 94,000 listings, followed by
the Vauxhall Corsa, with 90,000 adverts.
SEARCHING FOR TRAITORS: Hit BBC show The Traitors returned to
our screens at the start of the year to much fanfare with the Land
Rover Defenders featuring prominently in each episode. The show
whipped up a new wave of interest of the iconic car with searches
of the Defender on the platform shooting up by 39% since the start
of series one.
BYD SCORES EUROS GOAL: Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer
BYD saw a huge 69% week-on-week increase in the number of
advert views of its new models on Auto Trader during the first
weekend of the Euro 2024 tournament. As millions of viewers
across the UK tuned into the footballing action, BYD stole the show
as official partner during the tournament with the brand appearing
during TV advert breaks and on advertising hoardings around the
pitch.
TESLA QUICK OUT THE BLOCKS: Over a million fully electric cars
are now on the roads in the UK as motorists make the switch to
electric and there’s one electric vehicle that Brits just can’t get
enough of. The Tesla Model 3 was once again the fastest selling
used electric vehicle in 2024 shifting on average in only 19 days.
CELEBRITY CARS: F1 legend and three-time world Champion
Ayrton Senna’s personal red Honda NSX went on sale on the
platform this year for a whopping £500,000. The car, which
Senna frequently used during his stays in Portugal in the early 90s
when driving for McLaren, was snapped up in no time with one
lucky buyer meeting the asking price to get the keys to a piece of
automotive racing history.
MILLIONAIRE’S CLUB: a variety of stunning cars in excess of £1
million made it on to the Auto Trader platform this year. The most
expensive model that was advertised on Auto Trader in 2024 was
a £3 million Pagani Huayra, an Italian supercar which boasts a top
speed of around 238mph and can achieve 0-60 mph in just 2.8
seconds.

BARGAIN HUNT: The cheapest advert that
appeared on Auto Trader this year was a
59 plate (2009/2010) Vauxhall Astra which
went up for sale for just £75. Thanks to
its very low price tag, the Astra managed
to generate over 1,600 advert views from
those looking for a cheap run around.
BIGGEST PRICE RISER: with hundreds of
thousands of daily pricing observations
from across the whole retail market, Auto
Trader’s Retail Price Index has tracked some
surging price tags this year, including the
classic version of the Peugeot 308 Sport,
which saw its average price rise over 73% in
2024 to £4,002.
BIGGEST PRICE FALLER: at the opposite
end of the spectrum, the average price of
a Honda Civic Executive fell -53% over the
year, to £2,455.
Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto
Trader commented, ‘At Auto Trader we
have a huge wealth of data points which
can allow us to have a clear view of how the
automotive market is performing and spot
any trends in car buying habits from Brits.
The last twelve months have shown that
cultural moments such as The Traitors and
the Euros can have a noticeable impact in
influencing the types of vehicles consumers
are searching for and hoping to add to their
driveways’.

A1 ADAS Group Gearing
Up for National Expansion
Norwich-based A1 ADAS Solutions Group, an ADAS, diagnostic and calibration
specialist, is gearing up as it continues to expand across the UK.
Plans are underway to add more
vehicles to its mobile ADAS fleet
as demand grows from garages,
bodyshops, and fleet companies for
qualified ADAS technicians.
Iain Molloy, managing director, said: “As
the latest figures from the IMI show, only
two percent of technicians in the UK are IMI
TechSafe registered and qualified to work
on complex and potentially lifesaving ADAS
systems.
“But it’s not just about sending techs to
get qualified. A lot of garages don’t want
the responsibility of ADAS work. They much
prefer to get us in to do it for them and pass
that liability on.
“And that’s a good decision. I’ve long been
an advocate of ‘do ADAS right or don’t do
it at all’. ADAS calibration has become an
essential part of everyday vehicle repairs
and we’re seeing some really frightening
practices on what are essentially safety
systems.”
Molloy says he’s on a mission to help
workshops navigate how they can best
manage ADAS work and has shaped the
company’s business strategy to provide
garages with solutions that are best suited
to their individual needs. Within that, is an
online strategy to ensure both garages and
retail customers can find A1 online and seek
impartial advice.
He continued: “We live and breathe ADAS,
but it’s no good having all this expertise if no
one knows you exist!
“Early in the business, I knew we needed a
website that really worked and would show
up for people looking for ADAS services. It’s
your ‘shop window’ and an absolute must
for getting the right customers through the
door.
“Garage Services Online (GSO) were the
obvious choice and the website has since
made a huge difference to our business.
We’ve grown a lot in the last four years and
the website has grown with us.
“I’m now relying on it to specifically
target the geographical areas where our
new mobile ADAS vans will be based. Via the
analytics, we’ll clearly see when its working
and assess the ROI.
“I like working with GSO, the team is so
efficient and easy to deal with. They listen
to what you need and that’s it, consider it
done.
“I talk all the time about using ADAS
specialists and not trying to do something
you’re not qualified in. Well, it’s the same for
automotive websites. If you need one – and
who doesn’t – GSO are the people to go to.”

BookMyGarage
boosts business
revenues
for the
independent
garage sector
Jessica Potts, BookMyGarage
Chief Marketing Officer
l BookMyGarage generated more than £22m retail
work for independent sector in just three months
l Garages with good reviews and convenience factors
receive more customer bookings
l Growing confidence in consumers utilising online
tools helps boost web traffic
Independent garages utilising
BookMyGarage, the UK’s leading
servicing and MOT booking website,
undertook £22.26 million worth of
additional work from retail customers in
just three months.
From September until the end
of November 2024, BookMyGarage
generated a substantial increase in
business for independent garages as
confidence grows among consumers
in managing their car maintenance
online. Increasingly motorists are using
digital tools to meet vehicle ownership
requirements such as selecting and
booking the local garage that best suits
their essential requirements including
repairs, servicing and MOTs.
The incremental business and demand
from drivers for the independent sector
translates to an increase of 10% year-onyear
as motorists locate nearby businesses
with available slots and identify garages
with high levels of customer care ratings in
increasing numbers.
BookMyGarage chief marketing officer
Jessica Potts said: “At BookMyGarage,
we are heavily invested in driving traffic
to our website which in turn enables
many in the independent sector to
attract custom from car owners who are
otherwise unlikely to have come across
their business. Our partners tell us that
our platform drives high quality customers
who often remain loyal to their garage for
their ongoing service requirements.”
The latest data from the platform has
also reinforced the success of its new
Accelerate package with almost half (48%)
of bookings going to businesses signed up
with the service.
Launched in February 2024, Accelerate
was designed in response to consumers
who are increasingly utilising online tools.
Garages on the Accelerate programme
which booked retail customers in the
three-month period (September-
November 2024) accounted for £10.7
million pounds worth of all work
generated via the platform. During this
time, on average, Accelerate clients made
866% ROI.
Accelerate garages benefit from
increased bookings with social media
advertising, highly targeted online
marketing campaigns and online booking
functionality, managed by BookMyGarage.
More than a third (35%) of BookMyGarage
customers book out of hours representing
a significant proportion of business that
could otherwise be missed.
Potts added: “Motorists expect an
easily accessible and transparent booking
process where a range of products
and services are also provided. Many
are looking for convenience and quick
availability. However, all BookMyGarage
customers want excellent customer
service and transparent pricing.”
The Accelerate package incorporates
fully funded Google ads, Bing ads and
social media campaigns put together by
BookMyGarage’s in-house expert team.
The campaigns are uncapped and are
restricted only by the garages’ availability.
As part of its drive for transparency,
BookMyGarage encourages consumers to
share their experiences on its platform.
Independent garages receive an average
of 91 reviews from customers which leaps
to an average of 142 for businesses signed
up to the Accelerate marketing package.
On average, Accelerate members receive
56% more reviews and 45% more retail
bookings.
Accelerate guarantees a minimum of 60
bookings per year although members are
already enjoying an average 20 bookings
a month whilst maintaining full control
of pricing, offers and availability. Other
benefits include the ability to provide lastminute
cancellation slots for which some
customers are prepared to pay a premium
price.

Hella Gutmann urges garages
to make “essential” ADAS
investment in 2025
Garages will need to put a plan in place to deal with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in 2025,
and Hella Gutmann is urging businesses to seek out training for staff, and to invest in the equipment
needed to deal with the technology along with a number of other challenges and opportunities.
Figures from the Institute of the
Motor Industry (IMI) show that
20% of vehicles on UK roads will
be equipped with ADAS technology in
2025. “These vehicles will be on the
ramp in independent workshops,” said
Julian Goulding, Head of Sales at Hella
Gutmann, “and technicians will need the
skills and equipment to work on them. This
makes upskilling and training, as well as
investment in key equipment essential as
we enter the second half of the decade.”
With one fifth of all cars on UK roads
using ADAS systems, garages face a choice.
“In 2025, ADAS will be increasingly difficult
to ignore for independent garages, said
Julian. “The time has come to address
how to deal with ADAS-equipped vehicles,
in the same way workshops have been

considering other challenges such as
electric and hybrid vehicles, while also
navigating the thorny issue of vehicle
access.”
HELLA has been working to make sure
support is in place. “Last year we opened
a new training facility; HELLA Academy,”
said Julian. “With IMI centre approval, the
initial focus has been on ADAS training,
through which workshops can take on the
ADAS challenge with confidence.
“On the equipment side, Hella Gutmann
offers an ADAS solution to meet all
workshop needs, from the CSC-Tool SE
to the CSC-Tool Digital and CSC-Tool
Mobile. Support for workshops from
Hella Gutmann will continue to widen in
2025, with the upcoming release of the
new CSC-Tool X 20. The new device will
streamline ADAS jobs for technicians and
enable fast and efficient calibrations.”
Another key issue for garages is
access. “With dealer tools often the
only way to gain entry to crucial
systems,” said Julian, “independents
must make sure they are not locked
out. Remote diagnostics will become
increasingly crucial in 2025 and beyond
as a result. Hella Gutmann has a popular
solution here too. Through Hella
Gutmann’s macsRemote device, garages
gain access to our team of remote
experts, who can help them complete
jobs requiring dealer tools.
“Technology and the need for training
will continue to be key concerns for
garages in 2025, but with the support of
HELLA and Hella Gutmann, workshops will
be able to face up to the challenge and
make the most of the opportunity.”

AWARDS
HELLA named CV Supplier of the Year at
IAAF Pride of the Aftermarket Awards 2024
HELLA won big at the Independent Automotive Aftermarket
Federation (IAAF) Pride of the Aftermarket Awards 2024, with the
company’s continuing commitment to the commercial vehicle
sector recognised when it was named CV Supplier of the Year.
The ceremony took place during the IAAF Awards Dinner, which
was held following the IAAF Annual Conference on Thursday 5
December. One of 10 main prizes announced during the night,
HELLA’s victory as CV Supplier of the Year came following a
particularly productive year for the company on the commercial
vehicle front.
“Being named CV Supplier of the Year in the IAAF Pride of The
Aftermarket Awards is the perfect end to what has been a busy but
incredibly rewarding year for everyone at HELLA,” said Neil Grant,
Managing Director at HELLA UK.
HELLA released a variety of new parts for the LCV and CV
market in 2024. There were new products in the Universal Lighting
range, including the Black Magic Lightbars for off-road use and
an expansion of the HELLA VALUEFIT LED range for headlamps
and work lights. HELLA also supported CV workshops through its
expanding Electronics range, which now includes more than 185
references covering over 180,000 applications.
“The team worked hard over the last 12 months to back
operators and workshops through new product releases, and an
ever-expanding suite of support too,” said Neil. “Following our
win, the CV sector can expect even greater commitment from the
whole HELLA team as we enter 2025.”

TRAINING
LKQ Academy targets 2025
growth to help address
industry skills gap
LKQ Academy opened its new
headquarters in Tamworth last
week as it continues to invest in
its support for the independent
aftermarket.
The training provider is set to open
additional sites in 2025, alongside
launching new programs for the
modern garage – supporting customers
to get ahead of evolving market trends for
the late 2020s.
It will also be introducing new virtual
reality compatibility to a selection of its
online training courses to help technicians
learn under-the-hood work anywhere at
any time, safely.
LKQ Academy expects ADAS to be
a key focus for training in 2025, with
plans to support the aftermarket with its
professional ADAS theory and calibration
courses through the LKQ Academy. The
business has equipped all its state-ofthe-art
sites with the Autel Advanced
IA900, offering hands on ADAS and wheel
alignment experience to technicians.
It’s growth plans follow a successful
2024. It now has more than 21,000
registered technicians and opened three
new sites in Glasgow and Manchester this
year, with a flagship site launched at its
West Midlands HQ in Tamworth.
The training provider now offers
87 unique courses, with several new
programmes introduced in 2024. Its
latest training launches include servicing
hydrogen vehicles and diagnosing and
repairing AdBlue system faults. It also
launched an exclusive programme with
Varta on battery construction to enhance
technicians’.
Understanding of battery health in the
context of EV and hybrid.
Course delegates can progress to the
popular IMI level 2/3 Hybrid and EV
training – which saw more than 1,600
bookings in 2024, with an expected
increase in the new year.
As part of its growing course offering,
the LKQ Academy has also partnered with
Andy Savva – The Garage Inspector – to
deliver a one-day ‘Financial Mastery and
Lean Workshop for Technicians’. The
course will be available across five LKQ
Academy sites in Glasgow, Sunderland,
Manchester, Tamworth and Bristol and is
specifically designed to give technicians
an understanding of the financial side
of the garage business, with insights to
increase efficiency and profitability.
Lee Chapman, Head of Support
& LKQ Academy, said: “The UK car
parc continues to evolve and we’re
committed to supporting the independent
aftermarket to meet its growing needs
and to close the industry skills gap. We’ve
further increased our UK coverage for
the LKQ Academy this year, with the
new site at T1 acting as a central hub for
operations, to help respond to demand
for upskilling.
“ADAS will be a particular focus for us in
2025, with only 2% of technicians – 4,425
individuals** – qualified to service and
repair these systems. We’re also working
on introducing more high-level courses
to the LKQ Academy and VR to our online
courses, to help garages stay ahead of the
game when it comes to market needs.
“We take our responsibility as a market
leader seriously and the last 12 months
have been a period of significant growth
and investment, that we’re looking to
continue into 2025 and beyond. Upskilling
plays an important role for garages to
prepare for the future and in doing so
offer high standards of work and customer
service that will help boost growth and
profitability.”
LKQ Academy also offers a Technical
Helpline that helps independent garages
to identify and resolve faults first time –
maximising throughput, profitability and
customer satisfaction. Over the last 12
months the helpline has taken more than
12,500 calls, saving technicians a massive
£1,500,000 in labour costs*.
All LKQ Academy courses are fully
accredited by the Institute of the Motor
Industry (IMI) and garages and workshops
can get a free skills assessment to identify
areas for improvement. Courses can
be accessed individually, with individual
memberships starting from £999, or
through workshop memberships from
£1,299.

TRAINING
Cleevely Motors becomes
IMI-approved training centre
Cheltenham-based Cleevely
Motors, in partnership with
Cotswold Diagnostics, has been
recognised as an Institute of
the Motor Industry (IMI) approved
training centre, underlining its
commitment to supporting
UK technicians.
Following the success of its “At
Ease with EV” courses in 2024, the
industry-renowned workshop now
offers a wider range of professional training
qualifications led by acclaimed technical
trainer, Alistair Finch.
From diagnostics and exhaust gas
treatment to advanced driver assistance
systems (ADAS) and electric vehicle (EV)
servicing, the training combines practical,
hands-on experience with expert-led
instruction. Each course is tailored to
provide technicians with the skills and
qualifications required to excel in a rapidly
changing industry.
“By combining our expertise with
Cleevely Motors, we’re equipping delegates
with the skills and confidence they need to
succeed,” said Alistair Finch of Cotswold
Diagnostics. “It also brings an exciting
opportunity for technicians to gain their
qualification while training at the UK’s
leading independent EV specialist.”
Cleevely Group’s IMI-accredited Level
2 and Level 3 EV qualification is expected
to be particularly popular. Delivered over
three days for £550 per delegate, the
unique course provides hands-on training
in a real-world EV workshop, equipping
participants with the skills and knowledge
to confidently service and repair EVs.
“We’re proud to achieve IMI Approved
Training Centre status,” said Matt Cleevely,
Managing Director at Cleevely Group.
“This milestone reflects our dedication
to inspiring and empowering technicians
through practical, workshop-based
learning.”
For technicians already with IMI Level
2, 3, or 4 qualifications, Cleevely Group
has confirmed that its popular “At Ease
with EV” training course will return in
2025. Limited places are available for
the upcoming sessions on 18th January
and 29th March, so early booking is
recommended.

Ring announces new
Area Sales Manager
Colin McCourt has recently joined Ring Automotive and will be primarily
managing accounts on the island of Ireland, looking after both Northern
Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, seeking out new opportunities for business
development and growth and arranging workouts with customers.
Colin has more than 20 years experience
in the aftermarket, including previous
roles with Forte Lubricants, Magowan
Tyres, Würth Ireland and Charles Hurst.
Colin commented on the perception he
had of Ring before joining the company:
“I had seen the Ring product in loads of
motor factors, and when I asked about
it, I always got a positive response. Also,
Ring has invested heavily in workout vans,
kitted out with its best selling products,
available to our customers for trade
shows and workouts. When I saw those
vans, I knew I wanted to be a part of the
company, as these tools make my job a lot
easier. I also like the idea of being part of a
worldwide company like OSRAM.”
He furthered explained what he likes
about working at Ring: “I really like the
company’s innovation. Ring is not afraid
to take risks, even if they don’t pay off all
the time, be that in products, or people or
indeed new ways of selling. I really enjoy
that fact that I’m part of an organisation
that is open to new ideas and will act on
them if it believes it may be a success.
Also, our product offering and quality for
our price point really separates us from
our competitors.”
When asked about what he enjoys about
his job role, he said: “I love the variety.
Most of my time is spent on the road,
however there are times I need to work
from home. We do a lot of trade shows
which is new to me, as well as spending a
fair amount of time at the head office in
Leeds.”
Ann-Marie takes the Dayco helm
Following the end of December retirement of its long term National Sales Manager, Steve Carolan, Dayco UK starts
2025 with the promotion of Ann-Marie Dean to provide the new leadership for the team serving the UK and Ireland.
Ann-Marie first joined Dayco in early 2018
when she moved from the dealer side of
the industry, where she undertook roles in
parts operations and business to business
sales for both cars and commercial
vehicles, to transition to the independent
aftermarket.
Truly living up to Steve’s comments at
the time, when he said: “Ann-Marie has
an obvious enthusiasm for the industry
and that’s a great attribute to have
when you also have an understanding of
the challenges technicians face,” Ann-
Marie has consistently demonstrated a
commitment to raise awareness of the
Dayco brand and the original equipment
replacement parts solutions the company
has to offer.
“Over the last six years, I have benefited
from working with a great team, under
dependable leadership, during which the
business has grown in both its reputation
and market share,” explains Ann-Marie.
“So, taking onboard these positives, I’m
delighted and honoured to take up the
country’s management role and, together
with my colleagues, keep Dayco on
the rising trajectory it’s been on since
establishing its independent distribution
in 2011.
“Although the trade is sensibly looking
at how to benefit from the growth in
electric vehicles, it’s also wise for it to
remember that the vast majority of the
vehicles that will enter the independent
workshop for the next decade, will have
an internal combustion engine, whether
petrol or diesel.
“This means that Dayco, and the
products that we offer, will remain
relevant and required for the
foreseeable future, which is a great
thing for me to remember as I enjoy
the challenges that will no doubt
arise from this new expanded
role.”
