Program Notes:
Having grown up with video games, the genre and styles of music composed
for these games holds a special place in my heart. Journey's End is about a hero
in a role-playing game (RPG) reminiscing about their long adventure - one in
which they overcame hardships, established new friendships, and proved
triumphant over every obstacle in their path.
It is inspired by the orchestral works of composers such as Koji Kondo,
Nobuo Uematsu, Yoko Shimomura, and Joe Hisaishi. These composers
are reknowned for writing music for various video game series, including
Super Mario, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Ni No Kuni. With this
piece, I hope to evoke the childlike wonder that one would feel when playing
their first video game.
Acknowledgements:
I'd like to thank my past band teachers and conductors for inspiring me to
pursue a career in music. In particular, I'd like to thank Dihan Weeratunge
for challenging me to do more when I first started using music notation software.
I'd also like to thank the aforementioned composers, as well as so many more,
who inspire me to greater heights everyday when it comes to composing music.
Lastly, I'd like to thank Dr. Steven Capaldo, whose mentorship to me in so many
facets of my degree has been invaluable. Journey's End would not have realized
its full potential without his guidance and him consistently pushing me to
push myself.
Performance Notes:
Journey's End was originally written with a piano in mind. Though the marimba and
vibraphone can act to double the piano, the marimba part should NOT be treated
as an optional part - the vibraphone part can be, in case a pianist is not available. A
harpist could also play the piano part.
There are multiple sections involving solos - add/subtract players at your discretion
depending on the balance of the ensemble.
In general, the piece should push forward. The opening is meant to sound like a
fanfare, and 96 is a comfortable tempo for it to sit at. The faster sections at ♩ = 126,
should push at 126 as to not sound like a march at ♩ = 120; however, you may not
want to push much faster for the sake of the players being able to keep up at tempo.
As for the slower section, ♩ = ca. 75 is a rough tempo marking of around where
the piece should be for that section, but this should also push a bit rather than stay
too laid back. Think of a reflective walk through the forest - that is what the hero is
going through in this section. The marimba part is especially important here in order
to get across the woody texture that one may associate with a forest or the woods.
Composer Bio:
Composer Bio:Nishant Amatya (he/him) is a Nepalese-Canadian educator, composer and arranger from
Surrey, British Columbia and currently residing in Victoria, BC on the unceded traditional territories
of the Songhees, Esquimalt, W̱ SÁNEĆ and lək̓ ʷəŋən peoples. He completed his BMus (Education) at
the University of Victoria in 2023 and is currently completing his PDPP (BEd). His first work, Journey’s
End, was premiered by the UVic Wind Symphony in October 2022, and he has composed/arranged
for various other groups. His musical inspirations include composers such as Joe Hisaishi, Yoko Shimomura,
Carlos Eiene and Charlie Rosen.
