Monterosso. Cinque ettari di terreno coltivati a vigne, ulive-

to e limoneto dalla Famiglia Grillo: vino, grappa, olio, limoni e

miele sono le sue produzioni. Potrete fare degustazioni a tema

accompagnate da un calice di vino, tutti i giorni dalle 12.00 alle

18.00, su prenotazione. Buranco è anche agriturismo, dove

potrete soggiornare nei suoi tre appartamenti con colazione

compresa.

In n the heart of the Cinque Terre the Buranco estate re-

veals all its precious charm to those who reach it, coming

up from Monterosso. Five hectares plot of vineyards, oli-

ve groves and lemon groves owned by the Grillo Family:

wine, grappa, olive oil, lemons and honey are its products.

Buranco offers themed tasting of its products accompa-

nied with a glass of wine, every day from 12.00 to 06.00

p.m. on reservation. Buranco is also agritourism with

three flats, breakfast included.

Monterosso al Mare

L

’ultimo dei cinque paesi sulla

costa delle Cinque Terre,

il più occidentale se si guarda a

Genova, nonché la più grande e

balneabile delle borgate in linea

con Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola

e Riomaggiore, è Monterosso

al Mare, in provincia di La Spezia.

Posizionato al centro di un piccolo

golfo naturale, chiuso a ponente da

Punta Mesco e a levante dai comuni

di Pignone e Vernazza, rispetto

agli altri borghi conta su scogliere

meno irte, spiagge più estese e un

andamento pianeggiante, che hanno

fatto del borgo un’importante

meta turistica alla portata di tutti.

È composta da due insediamenti

distinti, la più moderna Fegina,

dove si trova anche la stazione ferroviaria,

e il borgo più antico, una

folcloristica città vecchia che è la

Monterosso vera e propria. A dividerli

c’è la torre Aurora, sopra il

colle di San Cristoforo, resto ben

conservato di un sistema di difesa

più articolato, ospitante le rovine

di un castello medievale assieme

alla chiesa di San Francesco.

Degno della fama che lo contraddistingue,

con angoli molto suggestivi

e sentieri inerpicati a ridosso delle

colline coltivate a vigneti ed ulivi,

ottimamente servito da traghetti e

dalle maggiori vie di comunicazione

via terra, Monterosso fa parte

del Parco Nazionale delle Cinque

Terre e, contemporaneamente,

rientra nella relativa Area Marina

Protetta. Eugenio Montale, premio

nobel per la letteratura, era solito

trascorrere qui parte delle sue

vacanze estive giovanili, e le sue

esperienze sono raccontate nelle

celebri raccolte “Ossi di seppia”.

Map

Monterosso al Mare is the last village of the

Cinque Terre, it is the westernmost going

towards Genoa, the largest and with the longest

beaches after the villages of Vernazza, Corniglia,

Manarola and Riomaggiore. Monterosso al Mare

is part of the province of La Spezia, it is situated

at the centre of a small natural gulf, closed to the

west by Punta Mesco and to the east by the municipalities

of Pignone and Vernazza; compared

to other villages there are fewer steep cliffs, longest

beaches, as most of the village is on a flat

area, it has become an important and suitable

tourist destination for everyone. There are two

separate settlements in Monterosso, Fegina the

and then going along the promenade, if you

pass through the well kept old defensive Aurora

tower, which is built on the hill of San Cristoforo,

where there are the ruins of a medieval castle

and the church of San Francesco, you will reach

the colourful old part of the village, which is

the real Monterosso. Its fame distinguishes the

village, it has many evocative corners and trails,

perched close to the hills covered by vineyards

and olive groves; it is well served by ferries and

also by land. Monterosso is part of the National

Park of the Cinque Terre and of the Protected

Marine Area. Eugenio Montale, Nobel Prize in

literature, used to spend here the summer, when

he was young, his experiences are described in

the famous poems “Ossi di seppia". The hamlets

of Soviore and Madonna Soviore are part of

Monterosso.

Via terra: L’uscita dedicata è al casello

autostradale di Carrodano,

sulla A12 Genova – Livorno, poi strada

provinciale SP566 per Levanto, spostandosi

sulla SP370 per Monterosso,

a una ventina di chilometri circa.

Giunti a Monterosso troverete un bivio

con indicazioni per Monterosso

centro oppure Fegina. In alternativa

si può uscire al casello autostradale

di Brugnato, proseguendo lungo

la Via Aurelia, superato Pignone e il

Santuario di Soviore ci si immette sulla

strada provinciale SP38 per Monterosso.

La stazione di Monterosso al Mare è

sulla tratta “Genova - La Spezia, ottimamente

servita da Intercity e flotta

Freccia. E’ altresì disponibile un treno

regionale con partenze ogni 30 minuti

circa da La Spezia, ottimo per la stagione

estiva ma molto affollato negli

orari di rientro. In ogni caso, tutti i paesi

delle Cinque Terre hanno una stazione

ferroviaria e il percorso è scavato

tra i pendii rocciosi, passando per

comodi tunnel: proprio per questo il

treno risulta essere il mezzo di trasporto

più veloce e largamente utilizzato.Presso

le biglietterie si possono

acquistare i biglietti giornalieri. Sono

disponibili per chi desidera attivarle

le Cinque Terre Card e la Cinque

Terre Card Treno MS, convenzionata

con Trenitalia: quest’ultima offre la

possibilità di avere accesso illimitato

in seconda classe ai treni regionali e

regionali veloci nella tratta Levanto

- La Spezia, l’accesso all’area del Parco,

l’utilizzo del servizio bus gestito

da ATC all’interno dei paesi e molto

altro ancora.

Via aerea: Gli aeroporti più vicini

sono il “Cristoforo Colombo” di Genova,

a un’ora di distanza, e il “Galileo

Galilei” di Pisa a poco più, con tappa

intermedia a La Spezia. Milano Malpensa,

che è l’aeroporto intercontinentale

più vicino, dista solo 3 ore e

mezza in auto. L’ultima possibilità, in

assenza dell’automobile, vi obbliga a

prendere il treno, con scalo a La Spe-

staff, preparano ogni giorno, con passione,

focacce liguri, pizze, torte salate, dolci sfiziosi

come piccoli pandolci genovesi, baci di dama,

biscotti al limone e molto altro ancora....

ma il viaggio è comunque ottimamente servito.

Via mare: Il Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5

Terre – Golfo dei Poeti organizza tour via mare

in battello per i paesi della costa, con una flotta

numerosa e adatta ad ogni esigenza, partendo

da La Spezia, Lerici e Portovenere, e da Viareggio,

Marina di Massa e Marina di Carrara, da

metà giugno a metà settembre durante la cosiddetta

stagione estiva. Il biglietto giornaliero vi

dà modo di salire e scendere a piacere da Portovenere

alle Cinque Terre a prezzi contenuti.

Presenti partenze anche da Deiva Marina e

Moneglia. Il Consorzio Liguria Via Mare, recentemente

insignito del Certificato di Eccellenza

2015 di TripAdvisor, è una seconda valida scelta

per muoversi, sempre in battello, lungo tutta la

costa, con escursioni e trasporti turistici via motonave

da e per Genova Porto Antico, San Fruttuoso,

Portofino e tutte le Cinque Terre, con la

possibilità di approfittare di una gita all’insegna

del whale watching, guidata da un biologo, al

“Santuario dei Cetacei”. Anche il Servizio Marittimo

del Tigullio cura i trasporti locali via

mare da Rapallo, proponendo gite turistiche in

battello sia nel golfo Tigullio che verso Portovenere

e le Cinque Terre nei mesi estivi.

By land: The right exit is Carrodano on the A12 Genoa–Livorno

motorway, then take the provincial

road SP566 for Levanto, then the SP370 to Monterosso,

after about twenty kilometres.

Once you reach Monterosso you will find a junction

with signs for Monterosso centre or Fegina; or you can

exit the motorway at Brugnato, then continue along

Via Aurelia, pass the villages of Pignone and Soviore

Sanctuary and take the SP38 road to Monterosso.

Monterosso al Mare railway station is on the "Genova-La

Spezia” route, where intercity and Freccia trains

stop. There are also regional trains, that leave from

La Spezia every 30 minutes, a perfect solution during

the summer, but it is often crowded.

Every village of the Cinque Terre has a train station,

the railway goes through the tunnels digged under the

rocky hills, it is the quickest and most used means of

transport.

At a ticket booth you can buy daily tickets, a Cinque

Terre Card or a Cinque Terre Card Train MS that

thanks to Trenitalia offers unlimited use of second

class train carriages, regional and fast regional trains

from Levanto to La Spezia, access to the Park and the

use of ACT buses, in the villages and much more.

By air: The nearest airports are "Cristoforo Colombo

" in Genoa, at an hour distance and "Galileo Galilei

" in Pisa, at just more than an hour distance, passing

the town of La Spezia. Milan Malpensa is the closest

international airport, it is only at 3 and a half hours

distance by car. In case you don't have a car you can

take the train, stop at La Spezia centrale station, then

take another train for Monterosso.

By sea: Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre–Golfo

dei Poeti, organizes ferry tours to the villages located

on the coast, with its many ferries and trips suitable

for everyone.

The tours start from La Spezia, Lerici and Portovenere,

also from Viareggio, Marina di Massa and Marina

di Carrara, from mid-June to mid-September, during

the so-called summer season.

The daily ticket gives you the opportunity to get on and

off the ferries from Portovenere to the Cinque Terre,

at a reasonable price. There are also departures from

Deiva Marina and Moneglia. Consorzio Liguria Via

Mare has been recently awarded with Trivago 2015

Certificate of Excellence, it is another valid reason to

choose a ferry for travelling along the coast.

Tours go to and from Genoa Porto Antico, San Fruttuoso,

Portofino and the Cinque Terre, there is also

the possibility of visiting the “Ligurian Sea Cetacean

Sanctuary” for whale watching, accompanied by a

guide, a biologist. Also Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio

has ferries that from Rapallo, offer tours in the Tigullio

Gulf and to Portovenere, Cinque Terre in the summer.

Il mezzo ideale per avere le Cinque Terre a portata di mano continua

ad essere il treno. Comodo, economico, servito da una

stazione per paese, malgrado in estate si riveli affollato non manca

di corse necessarie a sostentare il viavai di visitatori; anche

raggiungendo la zona con mezzo proprio, potete sempre lasciarlo

a La Spezia, dove è disponibile anche un deposito oggetti, oppure

a Levanto, proseguendo poi lungo le tratte regionali.

In città sono disponibili parcheggi liberi e parcheggi a pagamento,

i primi al bivio di entrata a Monterosso, sia dal lato “Centro

paese” che dal lato “Fegina”, scomodi per chi ha bagagli ma comunque

serviti dai bus navetta del Parco delle Cinque Terre, che

effettua il giro completo del paese con frequenza di 30 minuti,

i secondi a Fegina lato mare e all’inizio della zona pedonale di

Monterosso paese. Entrambi si avvalgono di tariffe giornaliere. Le

asperità del territorio, caratterizzata da alte colline a strapiombo

sul mare, rendono le strade strette e ripide, con molte curve,

fatto che spinge o ad odiarle, o ad amarle indiscriminatamente, a

seconda della propria bravura alla guida. Anche perché gli scorci

che regala l’Aurelia

sono tutto fuorché

tare il borgo antico camminando nella zona del porto

vecchio, fra i suoi carruggi, i tipici vicoli stretti

della Liguria, tra cantine, ristoranti, focaccerie e

gelaterie, quasi tutte a conduzione famigliare.

Per chi ama il trekking, Monterosso offre diverse

soluzioni, ed è alla portata di tutti quella del Sentiero

n. 2 del C.A.I., detto anche Sentiero Azzurro,

che collega i cinque paesi con un tragitto senza

difficoltà e dislivello. Ricordate che, comunque,

visitare le Cinque Terre significa soprattutto camminare,

e spesso in salita: se non vi armerete di

pazienza e di una buona macchina fotografica, non

godrete appieno delle meraviglie del territorio. Gli

spostamenti in differita possono essere facilitati

con la già citata Cinque Terre CARD, al costo di

12 euro. Compresi nell’offerta, anche gli autobus

locali della ATC Esercizio, ugualmente apprezzati

per il trasporto giornaliero e collegati capillarmente

con i borghi limitrofi. Potete raggiungere da Riomaggiore

la frazione di Biassa e Colle del Telegrafo,

da Manarola il paese di Volastra, e dalla nostra

bella Monterosso il Santuario di Nostra Signora di

Soviore. A scelta, nel periodo estivo, approfittate

dei traghetti: i prezzi dipendono dall’itinerario

scelto e variano da 3 a 25 euro per un biglietto

giornaliero illimitato.

The ideal way to reach the Cinque Terre is still the

train. It is comfortable, affordable and there is a

train station in each village, although it is often crowded

in summer, however there are extra trains in this

period. It is also possible to use the car and then take

the train from La Spezia central station, where there is

a luggage deposit, or Levanto, continuing along the regional

routes. In the village there are free parking areas

at the junction before entering the village, towards the

centre and also in Fegina, they are not very convenient

for people who are carrying luggage, but there is the

Cinque Terre National Park shuttle bus, every 30 minutes,

which makes a complete tour of the village; other

parking areas are in Fegina, towards the sea and at the

beginning of the pedestrian area of the village.

Both areas have daily rates.

The difficulties of the territory, with its high hills overlooking

the sea, the narrow, steep roads and many bends,

you either love it or hate it, depending on how good you

are at driving, the landscapes you'll be able to admire

on the via Aurelia are anything but detestable!

You can visit the old town on foot, going along the old

harbour with its typical narrow Ligurian streets, the

wineries, restaurants, ice cream parlours and focaccia

bakeries, almost all family-run. For those who

love hiking, Monterosso offers several solutions for

everyone, for example CAI path n. 2 also called Sentiero

Blu, which connects the five villages without difficulties

and differences in height. However you must

remember that visiting the Cinque Terre, means

especially going on foot, often uphill, you will need

patience and a good camera otherwise you will not

enjoy the full wonders of the territory.

Trips can be easily done buying the aforementioned

Cinque Terre CARD, at the cost of 12 Euros.

The card allows the use of the local ATC buses, which

offer daily transport to and from other villages. From

Riomaggiore you can reach the hamlet of Biassa and

Colle del Telegrafo, from Manarola you can reach

the hamlet of Volastra, from our beautiful Monterosso

the Sanctuary of Soviore.

You can choose a ferry, during the summer the cost

of the ticket depends on the itinerary and it goes

from 3 Euros to 25 euro for an unlimited day pass.

La tradizione di una “cucina di magro”, nelle Cinque

Terre, è ricercata e perfezionata nel corso

del tempo. Ovviamente non mancano piatti tipici

a base di pesce e crostacei, ma è attraverso quelle

preziose risorse che sono i frutti e le erbe strappati

alla terra, a prima vista ingenerosa, che si esaltano

certi sapori senza età. Ingredienti indispensabili

sono l’olio, i limoni, il basilico, la maggiorana, il miele

e le castagne sotto stagione, insieme a quelle erbe

spontanee come la salvia, l’origano, il timo o il rosmarino

profumato. •

Pochi i piatti di carne, limitati a pollame, coniglio o

selvaggina di penna.

Tra gli antipasti e il companatico fanno bella figura

le frittelle di fiori di zucca, o Frisé de Burbugiun, che

vedono realizzarsi il perfetto connubio tra una pastella

liquida e i dolci fiori delle zucchine, immersi

subito nell’olio caldo, mentre lo Sgabeo, una sorta

di impasto lievitato naturalmente, tagliato a strisce

e poi fritto a sua volta, si accompagna a formaggi e

taglieri di salumi. La focaccia, seppure la più famosa

resti quella di Recco, anche nella Riviera di Levante

ha un suo perché. Nelle Cinque Terre si trovano forni

che producono prodotti di eccellenza, il cui ingrediente

fondamentale è il pregiato olio extravergine

d’oliva. La focaccia è farcita con abbondante rosmarino

nella superficie, con sfoglie di patate, oppure

con formaggi morbidi (stracchino o altri formaggi

soprattutto caprini).

La farinata, più che tipica delle Cinque Terre, è un

bene noto in tutto il territorio che va da Genova fino

al sud della Toscana. A partire da un impasto a base

di farina di ceci, acqua, sale e olio extravergine di

oliva, il testo viene fatto cuocere nei forni a legna,

ottenendo così una morbida schiacciata dal gusto

inconfondibile. La panissa, che riutilizza gli stessi ingredienti

della farinata di ceci, vuole l’impasto ben

cotto e poi tagliato a fettine o a cubetti, fritto in abbondante

olio bollente. Si serve calda o già raffreddata

con olio, limone e un pochino di cipolla. Nella

variante a fette, proposta dentro una piccola focaccia

bianca senza crosta, rotonda, l’impasto prende il

nome di “Fette con le Fugassette”. Piatto unico

è la torta di riso salata, che si realizza a partire

da una pasta sfoglia di farina, acqua e vino, farcita

con riso cotto, uova olio, formaggio grana o

parmigiano, e certe volte con i funghi. Nei primi,

la salsa al pesto fa gli onori di casa, preparata

con basilico, olio extravergine di oliva, parmigiano

grattugiato, aglio, sale grosso , pinoli o noci,

e nelle varianti da gourmet con salvia o in rosso.

La salsa viene poi lasciata riposare, e servita a

guarnire le tagliatelle, le trenette o le “troffie”,

tutta pasta che viene lessata, nella variante genovese,

con alcune verdure estive quali zucchine,

fagioli verdi o una patata bollita.

Gianchetti, cozze - o Muscoli come si chiamano

nel Levante – assieme a spigole, orate e dentici,

o seppioline in frittura, fanno parte del variegato

panorama di primi e secondi a base di pesce.

I Gianchetti sono serviti in zuppa o ricoperti di

pastella e fritti, il pescato è ottimo sbollentato

in padella, i Muscoli gratinati, al sugo, ripieni, o

marinati quasi a crudo con pepe e limone. Tutti

loro lasciano il posto d’onore al pesce “povero”,

ma ricco di sostanze nutritive, che per eccellenza

è l’acciuga. E a Monterosso è un must:

chiedete del tortino d’acciughe al forno, fatevele

adagiare su un letto di focaccia, sott’olio, in

Cappunadda con olive e capperi… Le acciughe

vengono anche salate in recipienti di vetro, chiamati

“arbanelle”, e rinomate in tutta la Liguria.

Anche la preparazione dello stoccafisso con le

bietole, o verso i pascoli della Val di Vara con

polenta e sugo di pomodoro, non manca di richiamare

gli stereotipi di un’arte culinaria che si

lascia degustare.

Tante le ricette di dessert davvero buone. Ricordiamo

il castagnaccio, con pinoli e uvetta, la

Spongata sarzanese con canditi nello spezzino, i

canestrelli di pasta frolla spolverati di zucchero

a velo, e l’intramontabile Pandolce rotondo genovese,

ancora con pinoli, uvetta, arancia candita

e finocchietto.

Per quanto riguarda l’eno – gastronomia, tipici

delle Cinque Terre sono il vino Sciacchetrà,

passito DOC di colore tra il giallo ambrato, dal

gusto dolce e il profumo delicato, il Cinque Terre

DOC, il Vermentino e una locale varietà di limoncino.

Numerose proposte di prodotti tipici, tra cui

l’impareggiabile olio extravergine di oliva, i vini,

i pesti e le grappe prodotte in loco, possono essere

acquistate presso i punti vendita delle botteghe

a gestione famigliare o alla Cantina delle

The tradition of a "lean cuisine" in the Cinque

Terre is valued and has improved over

the years. There are of course typical fish and

shell fish dishes, but the products of the territory,

apparently ungenerous, have helped us

appreciate certain ageless flavours.

The essential ingredients are olive oil, lemons,

basil, marjoram, honey and chestnuts

in autumn, as well as wild herbs such as sage,

oregano, thyme and scented rosemary. There

are few meat dishes such as poultry, rabbit

or game.

Among the starters there are fried zucchini

flowers, called Frisé de Burbugiun, which

is the perfect combination between a liquid

batter and the sweet zucchini flowers, fried in

hot oil, or Sgabei a naturally leavened dough,

cut into strips and then fried, they are served

with cheeses and salami.

Although the most popular foccaccia is the

one of Recco, also the one made in the East

Riviera is well appreciated.

Farinata is not just a typical product of the

Cinque Terre, it is also well known throughout

the territory that goes from Genoa to the

south of Tuscany. The dough is made with chickpea

flour, water, salt and extra virgin olive

oil, it is cooked in wood-fired ovens and it has

an unmistakable taste.

Panissa is also another dish that uses the

same ingredients as Farinata, the chickpea

flour is cooked and then cut into slices or dices,

fried in hot oil. It is served hot or cold,

with a dressing of olive oil, lemon and a bit of

sliced onions on the top. It can also be eaten

Salted rice cake is made from a puff pastry

with flour, water and wine, it is stuffed with

bait, mussels as they are called in the East,

together with bass, sea bream and gilthead

bream, fried cuttlefish, are part of the many

starters and main fish dishes.

Whitebait is served in a soup or covered with

a batter and fried, the daily catch is good poached

in a pan, the mussels can be grated,

served with a sauce, stuffed, marinated or

even eaten raw with pepper and lemon juice

on top.

A place of honour goes to the "poor fish”, but

with rich and nutrient elements that is the anchovy.

In Monterosso it is a must: ask for an anchovy

pie, or put the anchovies on top of focaccia,

olive oil, or ask for Cappunadda with olives

and capers ...

Salted anchovies are also put in glass jars,

called "arbanelle", and are well known throughout

Liguria. The preparation of dried cod

with chard, or with polenta and tomato sauce,

in Val di Vara, reminds us of the stereotypes

of a culinary art which is worth tasting.

As concerns wine-delicatessen, the typical

products of the Cinque Terre are Sciacchetrà

wine, Passito DOC with its amber yellow colour,

it is a sweet wine with a delicate scent,

Cinque Terre DOC, Vermentino and a local

type of Limoncino.

There are many really good dessert recipes,

we suggest castagnaccio with pine seeds and

raisins, or Spongata from Sarzana with candied

fruits, Canestrelli a shortcrust pastry

with icing sugar on top, or the timeless round

shaped Genoese Pandolce, with pine seeds,

• Palazzo Comunale

Insediamenti sparsi di Monterosso si ebbero nei

dintorni di Punta Mesco secondo documenti che

risalgono all’anno 1000. Tuttavia, i fondatori del

primo, vero abitato, all’incirca nel secolo IX, intorno

alle foci del Torrente Buranco che oggi scorre

interrato, furono secondo le cronache i superstiti

del leggendario villaggio di Albareto, più a monte,

distrutto dai Longobardi per mano del Re Rotari.

Nei secoli seguenti, a causa delle incursioni saracene,

furono costruite lungo tutta la fascia costiera

torri di avvistamento contro il pericolo rappresentato

dai pirati. Alcune di queste torri, sono visibili

ancora oggi, in un circuito che tende a somigliarsi

lungo tutto il litorale dei paesi del Litorale del Levante

Ligure. Il primo documento ufficiale che fa

riferimento all’agglomerato urbano di Monterosso,

quindi databile e concreto, risale ad ogni modo al

1056, e colloca il paese sotto il dominio gli Obertenghi,

antica famiglia feudale di origine longobarda,

discendente di Oberto I, che da Bobbio, nel 614,

si espanse inglobando un territorio vastissimo di cui

facevano parte oltre la Lombardia anche gran parte

della Liguria e della Toscana, come la Lunigiana,

la Garfagnana e le Cinque Terre. Il loro passaggio è

testimoniato dai resti del castello, compresi nell’antico

cimitero che domina la baia del paese. La parte

più antica di Monterosso si è quindi raccolta al

di sotto del castello, nella vale del torrente, e solo

successivamente il paese si è sviluppato sull’altra

sponda, al pari dell’insenatura.Verso la metà del 1200,

dopo accese contese tra la Repubblica Marinara di Pisa

e quella di Genova, Monterosso, occupato inizialmente

nel 1241 dai Pisani, passò definitivamente sotto il dominio

genovese nel 1254 , che consolidò in quegl’anni la

propria potenza sul Mare Ligure; il castello venne fortificato

e Monterosso fu eletta al titolo di podesteria all’interno

del capitanato di Levanto. È sotto la dominazione

genovese che Monterosso conobbe un notevole sviluppo

agricolo, con l’intensificazione della coltivazione del

grano e, nelle colline che scendono al mare, il propagarsi

delle vigne e della produzione di olive e limoni, protetti

a valle da muretti a secco lungo i caratteristici terrazzamenti

(le cosiddette “fasce”) in prossimità della costa .

Anche l’attività marinara seguì un notevole incremento,

e nel 1600, vediamo Monterosso aprirsi ad una nuova

economia basata sulla pesca, con l’ausilio di una sua propria

tonnara. Parimenti, è in questi anni che vede il suo

completamento il pittoresco Eremo di Sant’Antonio al

Mesco, sito tra i boschi dell’omonima scogliera. Con la

dominazione francese di Napoleone Bonaparte, Monterosso

rientrerà nel Dipartimento del Vara, come capoluogo,

all’interno della Repubblica Ligure, e nel 1798, con

i nuovi ordinamenti francesi, il territorio di Monterosso

verrà circoscritto nel I cantone con capoluogo Levanto,

della Giurisdizione di Mesco. Annesso al Primo Impero

francese dal 13 giugno 1805 al 1814, il paese verrà dunque

inserito nel Dipartimento degli Appennini. Solo nel

1863 assumerà l’odierna denominazione di “Monterosso

al Mare”. A testimonianza del glorioso passato del borgo

c’è proprio il suo castello, con la cinta allungata che

comprende tre torri rotonde, la torre Aurora a picco sul

mare ed una torre medievale nel centro abitato, situata

davanti alla chiesa parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista.

La parte più antica del borgo resterà al sicuro all’ombra

delle fortificazioni, mentre la sponda sul piano crescerà

fino ad essere delimitata a levante dalla punta Corone

e a ponente dalla scogliera della torre Aurora. Nei primi

anni ’60, al termine degli ultimi strascichi della seconda

guerra mondiale, la borghesia europea e straniera ritrova,

nella caratteristica insenatura di Monterosso, come

già aveva fatto a partire dall’ottocento, un vero e proprio

polo turistico grazie alle spiagge, alle acque limpide

e al clima mite che, uniti all’approvazione di poeti e scrittori,

ne hanno fatto la capitale delle Cinque Terre. Dal

1973 al 2008, Monterosso ha fatto parte della Comunità

Montana della Riviera Spezzina, quest’ultima soppressa

con la Legge Regionale nº 24 del 4 luglio 2008. Oggigiorno,

la maggiore delle borgate è un centro topico del

turismo balneare del Levante, e con la bella chiesa di

San Giovanni Battista, in stile gotico-ligure, i suoi giardini

pubblici, aperti sul panorama rupestre della “Costa dei

Santuari", nel quale è compreso il Santuario di Soviore

nella località di Albareto, e i soleggiati arenili di Fegina,

si distingue per la convivialità e i suoi panorami unici, che

vanno dai limoneti sulle colline al tramonto sulle barche

tirate in secca lungo la spiaggia.

According to documents dated year 1000, the first

settlements were near Punta Mesco, however there

is evidence of an inhabited area, around the ninth

century, near the mouth of the Buranco stream, these

people were the survivors of the village of Albareto, which

was destroyed by the Longobard King Rotari. During

the following centuries towers were built along the coast

to prevent Saracen raids.

Some of these towers still exhist, this makes the place

look like other villages of the east coast.

The first official document that refers to the built up area

of Monterosso, dates back to 1056, when the village

was ruled by the Obertenghi family, an ancient feudal

family of Lombard origins, descendants of Oberto I. The

family expanded its territories in 614 from Bobbio, including

a vast area of Lombardia, part of Liguria, Tuscany,

Lunigiana, Garfagnana and Cinque Terre. The remains

of the castle and the ancient cemetery overlooking the

bay of the country, testify this passage. The oldest part

of Monterosso was situated below the castle, in the valley

of the stream, only later the village developed on the

other side.

Towards the middle of 1200, after heated disputes

between the Maritime Republic of Pisa and Genoa,

Monterosso was first occupied by the inhabitants of Pisa

in 1241, then it passed under the Genoese dominion in

1254, which consolidated its power on the Ligurian Sea;

the castle was fortified; Monterosso was elected Podesteria

within the Captaincy of Levanto.

It was under the Genoese domination that Monterosso

had a remarkable agricultural development, intensifying

the cultivation of wheat and increasing the vineyards on

the hills leading to the sea, the olive groves and lemon

trees, a valley protected by stone walls along the characteristic

terraces (the so-called " fasce") near the coast.

Also the maritime activity increased and in 1600,

Monterosso started a new economy based on fishing

with the help of its own tuna fishing nets. It was in that

period that the picturesque hermitage of San Antonio

al Mesco, located in the woods of the homonymous cliff,

was completed. Under the French domination of Napoleon

Bonaparte, Monterosso became part of the Department

of Vara, as county seat of the Ligurian Republic,

but in 1798, with the new French laws, the area was

enclosed in the administrative centre of Levanto, the

Jurisdiction of Mesco. It was part of the First French Empire

from 13 June 1805 to 1814, the village was included

in the Department of the Apennines. In 1863 its name

changed to " Monterosso al Mare". Its castle is the proof

of a glorious past, with its long walls that include

three round shaped towers, the Aurora

tower overlooking the sea and a medieval

tower situated in the centre of the village,

in front of the parish church of San Giovanni

Battista. The oldest part of the village was

protected by its fortifications, while the area

set on the plane developped to the east up to

Punta Corona and to the west up to the cliff

of the Aurora tower.

In the early 1960s, after the last traces of the Second

World War, the European and foreign bourgeoisie, gathered

in the characteristic bay of Monterosso, as they had

done before in the nineteenth century. It was a real tourist

attraction thanks to its beaches, clear waters and a

mild climate, and the approval of poets and writers, all this

made Monterosso the capital of the Cinque Terre. From

1973 to 2008 Monterosso was part of the Comunità Montana

della Riviera Spezzina, which was abolished by the

Regional Law nº 24, 4 July 2008. Nowadays the largest

of the villages is a local touristic centre of the

East coast, with the beautiful church of San

Giovanni Battista, built in Ligurian Gothic

style, its public gardens overlooking the rugged

landscape of "Costa dei Santuari”, which

includes Santuario di Soviore in the area of

Albereto and the sunny strands in Fegina; the

village stands out for conviviality and unique

landscapes, the lemon groves on the hills and

the boats pulled into shore at sunset.

Emblema della religiosità del Levante, nella diocesi

della Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato, la chiesa

di San Giovanni Battista, costruita fra il 1244 e il

1307, è un mirabile esempio di stile gotico ligure.

Ritroviamo in essa la classica facciata a bande alternate

di marmo bianco e serpentino verde scuro,

con un portale ogivato leggermente strombato, il

rosone centrale traforato in marmo bianco, attribuito

a Matteo e Pietro da Campiglio, sotto il quale è

posizionata una lunetta affrescata che ritrae il Battesimo

di Cristo. A pianta basilicale, con tre navate,

il suo campanile merlato è formato dall’antica torre

medievale di controllo in pietra verde, a pianta rettangolare,

sopraelevata nel XV secolo.

Di ancora più grande interesse storico è forse il

santuario di Nostra Signora di Soviore, sopra Monterosso

a 464 m.s.l. tra boschi e terrazzamenti, il più antico in

tutta la Liguria sotto dettami mariani e incluso nel circuito

“Santuari delle Cinque Terre”.

Secondo le fonti storiche, il luogo che lo ospita fu rifugio

degli abitanti dello scomparso villaggio di Albareto. La costruzione

attuale, ad una unica navata, è frutto di numerosi

rifacimenti, che hanno comunque lasciato in risalto

le origini romaniche, gli interventi gotici e gli ampliamenti

settecenteschi, con un locale foresteria magistralmente

restaurato e un nuovo Centro Congressi. Nel santuario si

venera una statua lignea della Pietà, attribuibile al XV secolo,

di scuola nordica: al suo interno si conservano anche

ex voto in prevalenza di carattere marinaro e, nelle giornate

soleggiate, dal piazzale si abbraccia con la vista una

buona porzione del promontorio di Portofino fino all’Arcipelago

Toscano e alla Corsica, vista di fronte.

Dai luoghi di culto a quelli del bello, alla fine della spiaggia

di Fegina, a sostegno del soprastante belvedere, si trova

il Gigante, una scultura in cemento armato e ferro ad

opera di Arrigo Minerbi e dell’ingegnere Levancher,

costruita per volere di una coppia di monterossini benestanti,

tornati dall’Argentina. Alto 14 metri, in realtà

raffigura il dio Nettuno, e adornava la splendida Villa

Pastine insieme ad una grande terrazza a forma di

conchiglia, bombardata tuttavia con lo stesso edificio

durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Nel 1966 una forte

mareggiata rovinò ulteriormente la statua, che tuttavia

oggi si presenta ancora distinguibile. Della villa

Pastine rimane solo una torre.

A strapiombo sul mare, il castello di Monterosso sorge

su una cengia che separa l’antico nucleo abitato dalla

più lontana Fegina. Di origine obertenga, i genovesi

si occuparono di costruire le nuove opere di fortificazione.

Oggi restano solo i tratti di mura con alcune

merlature, tre torri circolari e una torre quadrata

angolare sul lato occidentale, compresa una torre di

guardia nel paese vecchio, l’attuale torre campanaria

della chiesa di San Giovanni Battista e un’altra torre

posta sugli scogli chiamata “Torre Aurora”, a sorvegliare

la città. La passeggiata “alta”, che dalla stazione di

Monterosso conduce al paese, passa proprio vicino a

questa torre, altrimenti non visitabile, e offre una bella

vista panoramica. Posto sul promontorio che domina

la baia, a cui si arriva lungo i vicoli del centro storico

su per una lunga fila di case e gradini, non potete

mancare l’ultimo e forse più affascinante luogo di culto.

E’ il convento di Monterosso, datato XVII secolo e

appartenente all’Ordine dei Frati Minori Cappuccini

della Provincia di Genova, dove all’interno della chiesa

seicentesca dedicata a San Francesco, con altare e

coro in legno, si può ammirare un dipinto attribuito al

pittore Van Dick.

Ve lo lasciamo per ultimo così come al tramonto è

d’uopo, per i visitatori devoti, incontrarsi davanti alla

tenerissima statua di San Francesco d’Assisi posta nel

piazzale antistante, che accarezzando una bestiola

guarda al mare. Non a caso, chiesa e convento sono

stati votati come luoghi del cuore, nel 2014, dal Fondo

Ambiente Italiano.

The church of San Giovanni Battista is the symbol of the religiosity

of the East and seat of the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana–Brugnato;

it was built between 1244 and 1300 and is a fine

example of Ligurian Gothic style. The classic facade with white

and dark green serpentine marble stripes, with a slightly splayed

pointed portal, the central fretworked rose window is made of white

marble and is attributed to Matteo and Pietro da Campiglio,

underneath there is a frescoed lunette depicting the Baptism of

Christ. It has a basilica plan with three naves, its embattled bell

tower is an ancient rectangular medieval watchtower made of green

stone, it was increased in height in the fifteenth century. Of

even greater historical interest is perhaps the sancturaty of Nostra

Signora di Soviore, located above Monterosso at 464 metres

above the sea level, among woods and terraced fields. It is the oldest

sanctuary in Liguria of Marian dictates and is included in the

circuit of Sancturaries of the Cinque Terre.

According to historical sources, this place was in the past the refuge

of the inhabitants of the lost village of Albareto. The actual

building, with a single nave, is the result of many renovations,

however its Romanesque origins, the Gothic works and the eighteenth-century

additions, still stand out, there is a masterfully restored

guesthouse and a new Congress Centre. In the sanctuarythere

is a wooden statue of the Pietà, attributed to the fifteenth century

Nordic School; inside there are also preserved votive offerings

mainly marine ex voto. On sunny days there is a fantastic view

from the square from the promontory of Portofino up the Tuscan

Archipelago and a front view of Corsica. From the places of worship

to those of beauty, at the end of Fegina beach, where there is

the Giant, a concrete and iron sculpture made by Arrigo Minerbi

and engineer Francesco Levancher. The statue was built thanks

to the desire of a wealthy couple from Monterosso who returned

home, after spending years in Argentina. It is 14 metres high and

depicts the god Neptune, it decorates the splendid Villa

Pastine together with a large shell-shaped terrace, it

was however bombed as well as the building, during the

Second World War.

In 1966 a heavy sea storm ruined the statue even more,

however today it is still distinguishable, instead just a

tower remains of villa Pastine. Overlooking the sea, the

castle of Monterosso rises on a ledge that separates the

old housing cluster from the distant Fegina. Of Obertenga

origin, the Genoese took care of building new fortifications.

What's left today are only parts of the walls with

some battlements, three round towers and a square corner

tower on the western side, including a guard tower in

the old village, the exhisting bell tower of St. Giovanni

Battista and another tower, that is located on rocks called

"Torre Aurora", built to guard the town.

The "high promenade" which goes from Monterosso Station

leads to the village and passes right near this tower,

this place is not open to visitors, it offers a beautiful panoramic

view. Located on a promontory that overlooks

the bay, it can be reached through the narrow streets of

the historic centre, along a long row of houses and steps,

you cannot miss the last and perhaps the most fascinating

place of worship. It's the convent of Monterosso,

dated XVII century, it belongs to the Order of Capuchin

Friars Minor of the Province of Genoa, inside the seventeenth-century

church dedicated to San Francesco, with

altar and a wooden choir, inside you can admire a painting

attributed to the painter Van Dyck.

We will leave it for last as it is a habit at sunset, for the

pious visitors to meet here in front of the lovely statue

of St. Francesco d'Assisi caressing an animal and looking

at the sea, it is located in the square in front. It is not

a surprise that both church and convent were voted as

“places of the heart”, in 2014 by FAI (The Italian Environment

Fund).

L

’abitato di Fegina, a sud-ovest dell’antico

borgo, al di là della Torre Aurora posta sul

Colle dei Cappuccini, deve la sua fortuna alla

grande e godibilissima spiaggia. Percorrendo

la passeggiata marittima, oltre il castello, ce la

si trova proprio di fronte, con i piedi che affondano

nell’arenile di sabbia a ciottoli. A portata

di mano sono i negozi e le strutture moderne,

con la possibilità di approfittare di lettini ed

ombrelloni. Alla fine del lungomare di Fegina

potrete stendervi sui numerosi scogli di grandi

dimensioni, posti proprio sotto la torre Aurora,

o passare il tunnel che vi porta nella zona antica

del paese. Al di là del promontorio c’è la seconda

spiaggia di Monterosso, molto bella anch’essa,

racchiusa tra il porticciolo e il viadotto su cui

passa il treno.

Nella zona vecchia si respira la classica atmosfera

da borgo ligure, tra i portici in ardesia, i

vicoli e le case gitane a più livelli, ideale sia per

lo shopping che per assaggiare un buon fritto

misto in uno dei numerosi ristorantini del centro

storico, o strappare una fotografia agli innumerevoli

scorci dei carrugi che sapranno sorprendervi.

• Vista di Torre Aurora dal sentiero per il Convento dei Frati Cappuccini

Nel pomeriggio potrete passeggiare lungo gli itinerari

dell’acclamato Premio Nobel, che toccano i

luoghi cari ad Eugenio Montale e vi permettono di

immedesimarvi nei versi preziosi che ci ha lasciato:

si parte da piazza Garibaldi, arrivando al cimitero

dei frati cappuccini, per arrivare all’antica residenza

del poeta, Villa Montale, di fronte a Punta Mesco,

oggi alloggio privato, prendendo il sole lungo il

saliscendi di agavi e pinete della valle del Buranco.

Nel periodo di Pasqua, da marzo ad aprile, alle Cinque

Terre vi accoglie una carrellata di sagre, fiere e

mercatini. Caratteristica, a Manarola, la Processione

del Venerdì Santo con la rappresentazione luminosa

della Passione e della Resurrezione di Cristo,

sulla Collina delle Croci.

Tra gli eventi di Monterosso vi segnaliamo la Sagra

dei Limoni, il terzo sabato di maggio, con banchetti

di ogni genere e piatti e prodotti a base di limone,

dal limoncino, alla crema di limoni, per finire con

la marmellata e la torta al limone, e con la premiazione

della vetrina di limoni più bella, musica dal vivo e premiazione

inattesa; Il terzo sabato di giugno c’è invece la

Sagra dell’Acciuga Fritta, che già dal primo mattino riempie

l’aria del fragrante aroma delle cucine. Se non vi bastasse,

Il terzo sabato di Settembre tornate per la Sagra

dell’Acciuga Salata e dell’Olio d’Oliva, durante la quale

degusterete le specialità tipiche, dedicate all’acciuga ma

anche ai pescatori locali. Il Giorno del Corpus Domini,

il 7 di giugno, si adornano i “caruggi” con suggestive

decorazioni sulle quali poi passerà la processione; il 23 e

il 24 giugno si celebra la Festa Patronale di San Giovanni

Battista, con falò e processione, uniti ad un pittoresco

spettacolo di lumini in mare, la sera conclusiva; “Notte

di altri tempi” in agosto, con la rappresentazione storica

in costume medioevale del passaggio di Monterosso dal

dominio di Pisa a quello di Genova. Festa dell’Assunta al

Santuario di Soviore il 15 Agosto, seguita, dopo la dovuta

processione, da uno spettacolo pirotecnico sul mare.

The residential area of Fegina, is located

on the south west of the old

village, beyond Aurora Tower located

on the hill of Capuccini, owes its fortune

to the large and highly enjoyable

beach. At the end of the maritime promenade,

past the castle we will find it in

front of us, our feet will sink in the sand

and pebbles.

Shops and modern facilities are at hand,

there is the possibility of renting sun

loungers and beach umbrellas. In Fegina,

During the Easter period that goes from

March to April, the Cinque Terre welcome

you with a roundup of festivals, fairs and

flea markets. In Manarola the characteristic

Procession on Good Friday, with a performance

of the Passion and Resurrection of

Christ, it takes place on the Hill of Crosses.

of floating candles in the sea, then on the

last evening there is the " Night of the past

", it takes place in August, with a historical

representation in medieval costumes, of the

e vegetali, realizzando programmi di studio,

monitoraggio e ricerca scientifica a tutela della

biodiversità marina e costiera, con un occhio di

riguardo per lo sviluppo sostenibile dell’ambiente

naturale e non solo: difatti, Il Parco Nazionale

Sia il Parco Nazionale che l’Area Marina Protetta

fanno parte del Santuario dei Cetacei, una

porzione di mare che comprende l’area Corsa,

Ligure e Provenzale, nota anche come Progetto

Pelagos, al cui interno è possibile seguire gli

spostamenti di delfini, balenottere e capodogli

stanziali nel Mediterraneo. I cinque paesi, Monterosso

compreso, corrono lungo una catena

montuosa che si sviluppa parallela al mare, sfiorando

gli 800 metri, e che fornisce la cornice

scenica ideale per una vegetazione tipicamente

mediterranea. Pino marittimo, pino di Aleppo,

querce da sughero, lecci e castagnete si susseguono

tra panorami rupestri che non mancano

di radure assolate, mentre tra i sentieri, anche

frequentati, non è inusuale incappare tra gli arbusti

di finocchietto di mare, timo, elicriso, euforbia

e ginestra, il colorato corbezzolo quasi in

riva ai marosi che definiscono la scogliera. Di grande interesse scientifico

sono alcuni endemismi, come la Santolina ligustica, la Centaurea

lunensis e la Centaurea aplolepa. L’ambiente è favorevole all’habitat di

specie come il ghiro e la donnola, e si vocifera del ritorno di un grande

predatore, il lupo. L’abbondanza di risorse non manca di richiamare signori

del cielo come poiane e falchi pellegrini. In estate, lungo i sentieri

non battuti, attenzione alle famiglie di cinghiali e nelle zone più riarse

ai nidi di vipere. La costa, ricca di baie e insenature, dispone di poche

spiagge libere, ma a Fegina c’è l’eccezione che conferma la regola, attrezzata

con numerose strutture turistico residenziali: una riva a tratti

di sabbia e a tratti ghiaiosa, intervallata da scogli come nelle porzioni

di Mapassu o del Quarto. I fondali sono caratterizzati da specie non

comuni nel resto del Mediterraneo, con praterie di Gorgonie e Posidonie

tra cui sarà possibile immergersi anche grazie ai locali centri diving

della Riviera Spezzina. Dislocati nei piccoli borghi del Parco Nazionale,

vi sono i Centri di Accoglienza, che forniscono ai visitatori informazioni

sui sentieri e gli itinerari escursionistici presenti, con la possibilità di

acquistare gadget e prodotti tipici.

• Vista della costa delle Cinque Terre

Everything about nature and

environment within several

kilometres is controlled by the

Marine Protected Area of the Cinque

Terre National Park. The Marine

Protected Area was established

on 12 December 1997, the

National Park two years after in

1999. The area includes Riomaggiore,

Vernazza, Monterosso, a


small portion of Levanto and the

village of Campiglia- Tramonti, in

La Spezia. The marine area goes

from Punta Mesco on the west, to

Punta di Montenero to the east,

it is divided into three different

protected areas (A, B and C).

The protected areas preserve

and offer a unique variety of species,

they also monitor and study

how to protect the marine and

coastal biodiversity, focusing on

sustainable development of the

natural environment and not only

that: in fact, the National Park

of the Cinque Terre protects the

area and provides, among other

things, the preservation of the

dry stone walls of the terraces.

The National Park and the Marine

Protected Area are both

part of the Cetacean Sanctuary,

a portion of sea which includes

Corsica, the Ligurian sea and the

Provencal area, it is also known

as Pelagos Project, it follows the

movements of dolphins, whales

and sperm whales resident in the

Mediterranean. The five villages,

including Monterosso, are built

along a mountain chain that runs

parallel to the sea, the highest

area is at 800 metres, it is the

perfect setting for a typical Mediterranean

vegetation.

foot paths as well as thyme, helichrysum,

cliffs. There are some local species of great

scientific interest such as Santolina ligustica,

Centaurea lunensis and Centaurea aplolepa.

The environment is favourable to species such

as the dormouse and the weasel, there are rumors

about the return of a big predator, the

wolf.

The abundance of resources attracts the lords

of the sky such as buzzards and peregrine falcons.

In summer pay attention to the families of

wild boars, when you go along untrodded paths

and to the nests of vipers in arid areas.

The coast has many bays and coves, but few beaches

are free of charge, Fegina is an exception,

it is equipped with a variety of tourist facilities,

the shore has sandy and gravel stretches,

with rocks in Mapassu and Quarto. The sea

bottom species are not common in the rest of

the Mediterranean sea, gorgonie and Posidonie

meadows, thanks to the diving centres of the Ligurian

Riviera you will be able to explore them.

There are info points in the small villages of the

National Park that provide information about

the trails and hiking routes, there is also the

possibility of buying souvenirs and local products.

L a nuova esperienza prevede di svolgere l’attività

di WINE TREKKING, la passeggiata tra i vigneti,

portando con voi un cesto da picnic, potrete

scegliere tra diverse tipologie di panini gourmet

anche per vegetarini e vegani, assieme ad una

bottiglia di vino a vostra scelta ed un frutto.

Il percorso di Wine Trekking è guidato da una

APP e comprende una visita della cantina, la

prenotazione è obbligatoria, da effettuare in

tenuta oppure, tramite mail o telefonata.

Per la natura del percorso si consiglia l’uso di

scarpe da trekking o simili.

BOAT EXPERIENCE

L ’itinerario della serata include un aperitivo e

con i colli e le pievi, i boschi nebbiosi e i

torrenti che si increspano tra le querce, passando

per le passeggiate sulle lunghe anse di sabbia di

Lerici e San Terenzo, per arrivare alla commerciale

La Spezia, casa di musei e del centro storico tra

Corso Cavour e Piazza Garibaldi, imperdibile fino

al modernissimo Porto Mirabello. Quasi in silenzio,

dalle curve dell’Aurelia, si arriva in un mondo fatto

poco più, dai contrafforti delle montagne che separano

Piemonte e Toscana strette intorno alla

the Cinque Terre, they have remained unchanged

by the passage of time. From Lunigiana

with its hills and churches, the misty woods and

streams that ripple among the oaks, going along

the sandy bays of Lerici and San Terenzo, reaching

the shopping area of La Spezia, with its

museums and the historic centre in Corso Cavour

Via Aurelia we reach the world of the five small villages

overlooking the sea, that have survived like

shipwrecked victims, thanks to a perfect isolation

strongly encouraged in order to maintain unchanged

the features of its historical beauties, above

all lucky for its unique landscape, they lend a hand

to the "Baie del Levante" and to the jewels of Santa

Margherita and Portofino, the Riviera with the

western villages located at a stone's throw from

the French Riviera, where the sun kisses common

views, and a little bit further from the spurs of the

mountains, which separate Piedmont and Tuscany

tight around the fertile Ligurian half moon.
