È con grande piacere che colgo l’ occasione

per presentarvi il borgo di Moneglia,

gioiello incastonato tra mare e colline

, noto per le sue bellezze artistiche,

architettoniche, naturalistiche e per le sue

tradizioni. Raggiungere Moneglia vuol dire

fare un tuffo nel passato percorrendo il

sedime della vecchia ferrovia, alternando

antiche gallerie e imperdibili scorci su

scogliere e falesie.

Sarà per noi grande gioia potervi accogliere

nella nostra terra dalla suggestiva bellezza

del suo paesaggio, dai colori intensi e

contrastanti che ha affascinato viaggiatori,

artisti e musicisti di ogni tempo. Moneglia,

riconosciuto come uno dei “Borghi più belli

d’Italia”, si snoda tra i sui carruggi e le sue

vie con i portali in ardesia, incorniciata

dalle colline di ulivi incise dalle fasce

coltivate, dalla spiaggia dorata e dal mare

azzurrissimo, premiato da oltre vent’anni

con la prestigiosa Bandiera Blu della

FEE. L’impegno dell’ Amministrazione è

quello di mantenere un Paese capace di

esprimere tutte le sue potenzialità storiche,

culturali, ambientali, enogastronomiche

e in grado di trasmetterle a chi ci vuole

conoscere così da rendere l’incontro con

Moneglia una delle esperienze più intense

It is with great pleasure that I take the

opportunity to introduce the village of

Moneglia, a jewel nestled between the

sea and the hills, known for its artistic,

architectural, natural treasures and for

its traditions. Reaching Moneglia means

diving into the past, along the tunnels of

the old railway, alternating to unmissable

views of the rocks and cliffs.

It will be our great pleasure to welcome

you in our land with its striking beautiful

landscapes, its intense and contrasting

colours, that has fascinated and attracted

travellers, artists and musicians of all

times.

Moneglia is recognized as one of the "most

beautiful villages in Italy ", with its narrow

and lively streets (caruggi), the slate

portals; it is surrounded by hills with olive

groves and cultivated terraces, a golden

beach and the beautiful blue sea, the

village has been awarded for over twenty

years, with the prestigious FEE Blue Flag.

The commitment of the Administration is

to maintain a place able to express all its

historical, cultural, environmental, food

and wine potentialities, and to pass down

all this to those who want to know us, in

order to remember Moneglia as one of the

most intense experiences.

Dove ci troviamo

La Riviera di Levante, nella sua zona di indiscutibile fascino

allo sbocco della val Petronio, ad est di Genova, è casa di una

cittadina che mantiene intatto il suo spirito marinaresco, con

una spruzzata di paesaggio collinare da esplorare a cavallo e

una di bistrot sofisticati in cui perdersi a mezzogiorno: Moneglia.

Non a caso, secondo alcuni, il toponimo del paese deriverebbe

proprio dal latino “monilia”, monile, cioè qualcosa prezioso.

Situato nel Golfo del Tigullio, è rinomato per il clima gradevole,

tipicamente mediterraneo, la qualità della vita e del turismo

che lo tengono sempre in vetta alle cronache, nonché per le

sue acque, specchi gemelli di quelli di Riva Trigoso e Sestri

Levante, meno delle scogliere accidentate, ma ugualmente

suggestive, di Deiva Marina, il primo comune che precede

Moneglia e in cui ci si imbatte partendo da La Spezia. Il borgo

di Moneglia si trova all’interno di una piccola baia racchiusa da

due promontori, in mezzo ad uliveti e vigneti, il Punta Moneglia,

una pineta cresciuta selvatica e impraticabile senza mantenersi

sui dovuti sentieri, ad ovest, e ad est il Punta Rospo, sbocco

per le zone residenziali fino all’abitato di Lemeglio. Il territorio

comunale comprende anche le frazioni di Bracco, Casale,

Camposoprano, Comeglio, Crova, Facciù, Lemeglio, Littorno,

San Lorenzo, San Saturnino e Tessi.

Where we are

On the eastern Riviera, east of Genoa, lies

the small town of Moneglia. The area is

of unquestioned beauty, at the end of

the Petronio valley; and the town has

maintained its seafaring atmosphere, the

hills nearby can be explored on horseback,

and there is a sophisticated bistro to visit

at midday.

Not by chance the name of the town is

derived from the latin “monilia”, meaning

something precious. Situated on the Gulf

of Tigullio, it is famous for its pleasant

climate, typically Mediterranean,and for

the quality of life and tourism, holding

its name high, as much as for the quality

of its sea water. This is the same as that

of Casarza Ligure and Sestri Levante,

and for the uneven rocky coast of Deiva

Marina, equally as atmospheric, which

lies near to Moneglia , towards La Spezia.

Moneglia lies on a small bay, closed in

by two headlands, among the olives and

vines. To the west is Punta Moneglia, a

wild pine wood, where you have to keep

to the foot-paths, and to the east is Punta

Rospo, near to the residential area of

Lemeglio. The district includes Bracco,

Casale, Camposoprano, Corneglio, Crova,

Facciù, Lemeglio, Littorno, San Lorenzo,

San Saturnino and Tessi.

Казале, Кампосопрано, Комельо, Крова,

Фаччиу, Лемельо, Литторно, Сан-Лоренцо,

Сан-Сатурнино и Тесси.

Come arrivare

Via aerea: L’aeroporto più vicino è il Cristoforo Colombo di Genova, a poco meno

di un ora del centro. In alternativa potete atterrare al Giuseppe Verdi di Parma, o al

San Giusto di Pisa, rispettivamente a 91 e 94 km da Moneglia.

Via terra: L’autostrada di riferimento è la A12 Genova-Livorno, direzione La Spezia,

si esce a Sestri Levante, proseguendo per la strada provinciale di Riva Trigoso.

Il transito prosegue lungo le ex gallerie della ferrovia, l’ imbocco del tunnel per

l’uscita a Moneglia è regolato da un semaforo a senso unico alternato, verde ai

minuti 15, 35 e 55 di ogni ora, per un tratto di dieci chilometri. Dal casello di Deiva

Marina per Moneglia il conteggio si sposta ai minuti 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50 di ogni

ora. Da Sestri Si taglia per le frazioni di Casale, Camposoprano a Facciu.

Moneglia ha una sua stazione ferroviaria sulla linea Genova-La Spezia, collegata

però solo dai regionali. Se si viaggia con Intercity o altri, lo scalo è a Sestri Levante,

da cui poi vi collegherete con la vostra destinazione.

Via mare: Il golfo dove si trova Moneglia è situato tra Punta Portofino e Punta Mesco,

a levante, Gli approdi attrezzati più vicini a Moneglia sono a Chiavari, con più di 500

posti barca, Lavagna e Sestri Levante, o in alternativa il porticciolo di Levanto.

How to reach Moneglia

By air: the nearest airport is Cristoforo Colombo at

Genoa, less than an hour away. Alternatively there

is Giuseppe Verdi at Parma, or San Giusto at Pisa,

respectively 91 and 94 kms. from Moneglia.

By land: the motorway to take is the A12 Genova-

Livorno, going towards La Spezia, exiting at Sestri

Levante, take the direction for Riva Trigoso. The road

goes through the ex-railway tunnel, and on leaving

the tunnel the road for Moneglia has a traffic light

permitting one way traffic in alternating directions,

changing to green at 15, 35 and 55 of each hour, for

about 10 kms. At the motor-way toll at the Dieva

Marina exit the traffic light regulating the Moneglia

road changes at 0,10,20,30,40, and 50 of each hour.

Coming from Sestri the road crosses the villages of

Casale, Camposoprano and Facciù.

Moneglia has its railway station on the Genoa- La

Spezia line, with only regional trains stopping; if one

is travelling intercity, the stop is Sestri Levante, from

where you can reach your destination.

By sea: The Gulf where Moneglia lies is between

Punta Portofino and Punta Mesco to the east, the

nearest harbours are Chiavari, with more than 500

moorings, Lavagna and Sestri Levante, or the little

harbour of Levanto.

по очереди и контролируется светофорами. Из Рива Тригозо в Монелью:

зелёный свет загорается на 2 минуты каждые 15-ю, 35-ю и 55-ю минуты

каждого часа. Из Дейва-Марина в Монелью: зелёный свет загорается на 2

минуты каждые 00-ю, 10-ю, 20-ю, 30-ю, 40-ю, 50-ю минуты каждого часа. В

Монелье также есть железнодорожная станция линии Генуя – Ла-Специя, но

останавливаются здесь только региональные поезда. В случае путешествия

на поезде «Intercity», необходима пересадка в Сестри-Леванте, откуда вы

легко доберетесь до пункта назначения.

Морской транспорт: залив, где располагается Монелья, находится между

мысами Портофино и Меско. Ближайшие к Монелье оборудованные причалы

находятся в Кьявари (более 500 лодочных мест), Лаванье, Сестри-Леванте

или на пристани Леванто.

Una delle particolarità di Moneglia sta nella posizione

felice che occupa nel perfetto centro dei percorsi che

ad est conducono alle Cinque Terre, il Golfo dei Poeti e

le sfuggenti gallerie della ex ferrovia, lungo Deiva, e ad

ovest a Portofino, Rapallo e Santa Margherita.

Lo spazio raccolto del paese non fornisce molti luoghi

in cui perdersi: partendo dai negozi, i bar e le caffetterie

con il loro bravo chioschetto, o, semplicemente,

dai portici tra le case, fatto qualche metro si arriva

alle spiagge. Tutte le bellezze sopra descritte sono

facilmente raggiungibili in treno, mezzo di trasporto

che vi consigliamo caldamente se la vacanza non

comprende molte tappe specifiche in giro per il Levante.

L’automobile è scomoda per circolare in centro, le aree

a pagamento sono più numerose dei parcheggi liberi,

e non a caso, considerato che Moneglia è comunque,

seppur piccolo, un centro balneare.

L’ATP è l’esercizio che si occupa dei trasporti locali, con

più di quaranta linee di pullman e autobus che collegano

Moneglia alle frazioni, o, nel periodo estivo, fornendo

bus navetta da e per i campeggi di Deiva, Sestri e le

spiagge di quest’ultima. L’ideale sarebbe portarsi la

bicicletta, o a prezzi modici, affittare un motorino da

un rent-a-car a Sestri Levante. Sempre nel periodo

estivo, è possibile usufruire ulteriormente di un servizio

giornaliero di traghetti, che batte tutta la costa fino

alle Cinque Terre. In spiaggia, è messo a disposizione

anche un diving center per praticare immersioni.

How to move about

A particular feature of Moneglia is its central

position in the arc between the gulf of the Poets

and the Cinque Terre in the east, and Rapallo,

Santa Margherita and Porto Fino in the west.

There is little space in the town to explore but

there are the shops, bars and cafés, with their

kiosks, or one can simply pass through the

arcades between the houses, and after a few

meters one arrives at the beach. Everything

described above can easily be reached by train,

the means of transport warmly recommended, if

not too many stops are required on this eastern

part of the coast. The car is inconvenient in the

town center, with little chance of free parking,

because Moneglia, although small, is a popular

bathing resort.

The ATP is the company which provides local

transport, with more than 40 bus routes that

connect Moneglia with outlying districts. In the

summer there are shuttle buses connecting the

campsites of Deiva and Sestri with the beaches

of Sestri. The best thing would be to bring a

bicycle, or for a low price, rent a scooter at Sestri

Levante. Also in the summer it is always possible

to use the daily ferry service, which operates all

along the coast as far as the Cinque Terre. On the

beach there is also a diving center for sub-aqua

enthusiasts.

маршрутов, соединяют разные районы города, а

в летнее время обеспечивают регулярные рейсы в

соседние городки Дейва и Сестри Леванте. Идеальным

вариантом для передвижения по Монелье будет

велосипед или скутер, арендованный в одной из

компаний «rent-a-car» в Сестри Леванте или Монелье.

Кроме того, в летний период, вы можете прокатиться

на прогулоченом судне, которое проплывает вдоль

всего побережья до Чинкуэ-Терре. На пляже работает

дайвинг-центр для любителей морских погружений.

Dato per assodato che il popolo

più antico di cui si ha notizie, sulla

costa, è quello dei Liguri, la tribù che

si riteneva stanziata nel territorio tra

Portofino e punta Mesco si fa risalire

invece a quella dei Tigullii, gente che,

in virtù delle ristrettezze del luogo,

conduceva una vita seminomade,

arroccata sulla sommità delle colline

e dedita più alla raccolta o alla

caccia che alla pesca, sfruttata solo

in seguito.

In epoca romana, i Romani faticarono

non poco ad assoggettarli, spinti

dal desiderio di ottenere un

percorso nella posizione strategica

rappresentata dal valico tra mare e

monti, e che sarebbe diventato ben

presto la ormai nota Via Aurelia.

La frazione monegliese di Lemeglio

viene per altro menzionata in

una carta dell’Impero, la “tabula

alimentaria”, un reperto di importanza

storica non indifferente.

Nel corso del VII secolo, durante la

dominazione longobarda, si favorì

la diffusione del monachesimo, con

i monaci di Bobbio che, arrivati

a dorso di mulo, svilupparono

l’economia del territorio con aziende

agricole e celle monastiche fino alle

valli d’Aveto, Sturla e Fontanabuona.

Carlo Magno, con il diploma imperiale

del 774, donò il territorio ai monaci

colombani, a cui si deve l’abbazia di

San Colombano di Bobbio fondata

dal santo nel 614; assieme agli altri

possedimenti liguri destinati al voto,

è ancora una volta grazie ai monaci

che si mantiene il primo ciclo vitale

di commerci, assieme all’agricoltura

intensiva a terrazze, con i successivi

collegamenti verso la pianura

Padana.

Nel Medioevo, come per molti paesi

liguri, la sorte di Moneglia si rovescia

con l’invasione dei Saraceni, che

saccheggiarono e depredarono in

tutta libertà sia il piccolo abitato che

i paesi vicini di Deiva e Riva Trigoso.

Una leggenda locale vuole che a

Lemeglio una violenta incursione

abbia condotto all’uccisione di

tutti gli originali abitanti del luogo,

assieme al rapimento di oltre venti

fanciulle.

loro viene amministrato, passando poi alla

Repubblica di Genova, a cui dà prova della

sua lealtà partecipando con una flotta delle

proprie navi alla celebre Battaglia della

Meloria, e a quella di Porto Pisano contro

la rivale, per l’appunto Pisa, per le rotte

commerciali.

In virtù dei fatti, nel 1549 i monegliesi

chiedono al senato di Genova la costruzione

di una torre difensiva, e la ottengono con

l’edificazione della fortezza di Villafranca

che, negli anni dal 1936 al 1939, viene

riadattata ad uso abitativo e viene persa

del tutto nel giugno del 1944, a causa dei

bombardamenti, restaurata solo di recente

assieme al parco antistante.

Nel 1637 diventa podesteria di Levanto che

si eleva a capitanato della repubblica, un

secolo più tardi passa a Napoleone.

Dal 1815 Moneglia cambia ancora

giurisdizione, prima sotto il Regno di

Sardegna e successivamente trovando in

quella del Regno d’Italia, finalmente e dal

1861, la sua ultima ragione di appartenenza.

Eccoci alla seconda guerra mondiale.

Moneglia viene coinvolta dai bombardamenti,

ricordati nelle date del 14 giugno, 29

giugno e 1º novembre 1944, atti a tagliare

i rifornimenti consentiti dalla tratta del treno,

sulla linea Genova-La Spezia.

Ma sarà nelle gallerie ferroviarie, quelle

che oggi vengono percorse in senso

alterno dalle macchine, che la popolazione

si salverà, trovando riparo e riprendendo

la vita di ogni giorno fino al rivalutarsi delle

coste nel successivo periodo di ripresa, con

un picco negli anni sessanta, assurta a via

d’accesso privilegiata alle capitali balneari di

Tigullio e Cinque Terre.

A bit of history

It is certain that the most ancient costal tribe was the

“Liguri”, the tribe which inhabited the coast between

Punta Mesco and Portofino was the “Tigullii”. These

people lived a seminomadic life on account of the lack of

open space, and, from the tops of the hills, were hunter

gatherers, rather than fishermen, which they became

later. The Romans had great trouble dominating them.

The Roman army needed a strategic road crossing

the lowland between the hills and the coast, which

eventually became the famous Via Aurelia. The district

of Lemeglio, near Moneglia, is found on a Roman map,

the “tabula alimentaria”, an important historical

reference.

In the course of the 7th century, during the Longobard

domination, the phenomenon of monasticism was

spreading. The monks of Bobbio, having arrived on their

mules, developed the economy of the territory, with

farms and monastic settlements as far as the valleys

of Aveto, Sturla and Fontanabuona. Charlemagne,

with the imperial edict of 774, gifted the territory to

the Colomban monks, to whom we owe the abbey of

Saint Colombano of Bobbio, founded by the saint in

614. Together with other holdings in Liguria dedicated

to the church, we have again to thank the monks for

maintaining the first commercial activities, and also

their intensive agriculture on terraced fields, and the

connections they established with the northern plains.

In the mediaeval age, as for many costal places, the

fate of Moneglia was sealed by the Saracen invasions,

who sacked and raided at will the small town and other

places around Deiva and Riva Trigoso. A local legend

tells that at Lemeglio an attack brought about the death

of all the men of the town and the abduction of more

than 20 maidens.

Until 1153, Moneglia was a feud of the counts Fieschi

of Levagna, and was administered by them. It passed

then to the Republic of Genoa, for whom it proved its

loyalty by participating with a fleet of its own ships,

in the famous battle of Meloria, and in the battle of

Porto Pisano, against Genoa’s great rival, Pisa, for trade

routes. On account of these events, in 1549 the people of

Moneglia asked the senate of Genoa for the construction

of a defensive tower, and they obtained the construction

of the fortress of Villafranca. Between 1936 to 1939 this

was converted into a dwelling house, but was completely

lost in June 1944 during bombardments, to be restored

recently with the gardens in front. In 1637 Moneglia

became a property of Levanto which gained power in

the Republic of Genoa, then to be passed to Napoleon

a century later. After 1815 Moneglia again changed

hands, going to the Kingdom of Sardinia, and after to

the kingdom of Italy since 1861, its last owner. We arrive

at the second world war. Moneglia was bombarded on

14th June, 29th June and 1st November 1944, attacks

aimed at cutting the supply lines provided by the railway

from Genoa to La Spezia. Inside the railway tunnels,

which today form the road, the population was saved,

finding shelter and continuing to live their daily lives

until better times , and the re-evaluation of the coast

which culminated in the 60s, when the bathing places

of Tigullio and the Cinque Terre were most popular.

В седьмом веке, во время господства лонгобардов, здесь

распространяется монашество. Прибывшие на мулах

монахи, развивают экономику города посредством сельского

хозяйства, монашеские кельи появляются на всей территории

вплоть до долин Авето, Стурла и Фонтанабуона. Карл

Великий, императорской грамотой 774 года дарит здешние

земли коломбанским монахам, которые основали в 614 г.

способствовало зарождению жизненно важной для города

жители и похищены более двадцати девушек. Монелья до 1153

года оставалась во владении князей Фиески из Лаваньи, затем

город перешел под господство Генуэзской Республики. Доказывая

верность Генуе, флот Монельи участвует в знаменитой

морской битве при Мелории в 1284 году, произошедшей

между флотами Пизы и Генуи, активно соперничающими за

торговые рынки и господство на Средиземном море, поражение

в котором поставило точку в средиземноморских амбициях

Natura

Tra Punta Moneglia e Punta Rospo, le spiagge si

perdono nell’abbraccio di scogliere direttamente

allungate sul mare, ammorbidite dai profili delle

pinete odorose e della macchia mediterranea. A

Punta Manara, tra le pareti verticali dove risuona la

risacca, sono numerose le grotte e le calette, l’Orto

dei Preti, la Valletta, La Ruspea.

In via di mattinate tranquille, a Moneglia l’accesso

alle spiagge è coperto da sottopassi, la strada corre

in alto e resta alle spalle, non disturba assolutamente

la siesta. La sabbia fine, l’ottima esposizione al sole,

il fondale tranquillo e le scogliere che la riparano dai

venti, ne fanno un vero e proprio gioiello anche per

le famiglie coi bambini.

Per i più intrepidi c’è un pezzo di spiaggia di pietrisco

dopo la prima galleria proveniente da Deiva, sarà

necessario parcheggiare la macchina o arrivarci

costeggiando la statale, a piedi o in bici. Se si ha

cuore di fare un tratto accidentato in più, si arriva

alla meta preferita dei giovani e meno giovani di

Moneglia, messi a rosolare sugli scogli o intenti a

sfidarsi in gare di tuffi.

All’interno del territorio sono presenti ben due parchi

naturali: il Regionale di Portofino e quello della Val

d’Aveto. Il Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino,

istituito nel 1935, si estende su una superficie totale

di 18 km² , comprendendo fasce coltivate a vigneti e

a oliveti, sentieri immersi nel verde brillante dei pini e

delle acacie, in un folto sottobosco che non di rado,

lungo le asperità del mare, si colora di corbezzoli. I

panorami, qui, quando si hanno gli alberi alle spalle

e la veduta sul mare aperto liscio come una tavola,

sono incomparabili.

Il Parco Naturale Regionale dell’Aveto viene

considerato parco naturale dal 1995: non meno

selvaggio del cugino, dominato dalle maggiori cime

battigia

dell’Appennino ligure, oscillando spesso tra i 1600 e 1800

metri di altitudine, ospita anche stabilimenti sportivi, ideali

per gli appassionati della montagna. Situato nell’entroterra

del Tigullio, si prospetta di tutelare in particolare le tre valli del

territorio, la Val d’Aveto, la più in quota, la Val Sturla coi suoi

pascoli e le malghe, e la Val Graveglia, coi paesaggi rurali,

le cave e le miniere. Ospita tra le altre l’unico sito minerario

oggi ancora attivo in zona, la miniera di Gambatesa, uno dei

più ricchi giacimenti europei di manganese. Il lago e la relativa

foresta delle Lame rappresentano invece il cuore della

biodiversità endemica, con un ricco patrimonio geologico,

faunistico ma soprattutto paesaggistico: i microclimi sono

ben percepibili a dispetto dello scarso divario d’altezze,

dati anche dalla presenza dei pascoli e delle coltivazioni a

terrazza verso est e le Cinque Terre.

Nel Tigullio sono stanziali l’aquila reale, vero vanto dei parchi,

e in diverse località alpine persino il lupo, tornato a riprodursi

nei boschi fronzuti di lecci e castagni. Considerevole è la

presenza di altri rapaci quali l’Astore, il Gheppio, il Biancone

e la Poiana. Con più di sessanta specie nidificanti, gli

appassionati di bird watching avranno pane per i loro denti.

Nature

Between Punta Moneglia and Punta Rospo,

the beaches are separated by stretches of rock

going right down to the sea, and above scented

pines and Mediterranean undergrowth adorn

the coast. At Punta Manara along the vertical

cliffs, where the backwash rumbles, there are

numerous inlets and caves, L’Orto dei Preti, La

Valetta, La Ruspea.

During quiet mornings, pedestrian tunnels lead

to the beaches, the road runs above and remains

behind and doesn’t disturb the siesta. The fine

sand, the sun, the quiet seabed, and the rocks

which give shelter from the wind, make Moneglia

a perfect place for families with children. For

bolder bathers there is a shingle beach after

the first tunnel coming from Dieva where it is

necessary to park somewhere else, and get there

walking along the side of the road, or by bike.

If you feel like going a bit further on uneven

ground, you can reach the favourite spot of the

young people( and not so young) of Moneglia, and

find them sunbathing and diving from the rocks.

Inland there are two protected areas: the Regional

Park of Porto Fino, and that of Val d’Aveto. The

former, instituted in 1935 covers an area of 18sq.

kms. It includes parts cultivated with vines and

olives; foot-paths immersed in the brilliant green

of the pines and acacias, in thick undergrowth by

the rocky coast, are coloured with the fruit of the

strawberry tree. The views from here of the open

sea, flat as a table top, are incomparable.

The regional nature reserve of Aveto has existed

since 1995, and is as wild as its sister park of

Porto Fino, and is overlooked by the major peaks

of the Ligurian Appenines. These are between

1,600 and 1,800 meters, and have mountain

resorts, ideal for sporting enthusiasts. The park

is inland from Tigullio, and particularly covers

the 3 valleys of the area: Aveto – the highest,

Sturla with its pastures, and Val Graveglia with

its rural countryside, caves and mines. It has

the only active mine in the area, Gambatesa,

one of the richest manganese mines in Europe.

perceptible, despite the uniformity of altitude, and

In Tigulio there are golden eagles, the pride of the

parks, and in some higher parts there are wolves which

breed in the holm oak and chestnut woods. There are

many other birds of prey such as the goshawk, the

kestrel, the short- toed eagle and the buzzard. With

more than 60 breeding species, enthusiastic birdwatchers

will have plenty to do.

I primi piatti di Moneglia sono legati alla tradizione genovese, il cui re

indiscusso resta il pesto. Salsa a base di pinoli, basilico, olio “buono” e

formaggio acidulo, prescinseua sulle prime e parmigiano poi, si accosta a

tutta la pasta corta fatta a mano, in particolare con le trofie, tipiche della zona.

Rimanendo in tema di lavorazioni a mano, indimenticabili i “pansotti”, ravioloni

stirati grossolanamente con ripieno di borragine ed erbette selvatiche,

accompagnati con burro o salsa di noci. Ravioli più discreti, ripieni di carne

magra o verdure, linguine e trenette allo scoglio, spaghettate degne di una

portata regale, impallidiscono di fronte all’abuso di farinata, un companatico

di farina di ceci cotto nel forno a legna e servito con affettati e formaggio

fresco, oppure, nella versione bollita per almeno un’ora, da mangiare fredda,

chiamata panissa. Di origine incerta i cuculli, piccoli bocconi di frittelle tonde

impastate anch’esse con borragine ed erbette, ideali come aperitivo e da

spizzicare in compagnia.

I secondi di Moneglia si basano su piatti semplici, divisi tra una ricca gamma

di mare ed una umile da monti. Dal pesce azzurro alle torte di verdure, molto

di ciò che veniva ritenuto superfluo, o inadatto ad una cucina più ricca, rimane

oggi in tavola. Gli scarti del pescato finivano nelle fritture, una semplice zuppa

fredda di pane diventava la caponada, trippe, tranci di baccalà e stoccafisso

con una particolare predisposizione per la selvaggina

poco pastorizzati di pecora, come la ricotta, o vaccini,

nel caso di stracchino e robiole. Proprio la produzione

casearia, accostata ad una artigianale, ci occupa di

offrire il meglio dei prodotti naturali dell’esperienza

culinaria di Val Graveglia e d’Aveto, offrendo in diversi

SCIAMADDA, literally “on the fire”, inspired by

the inns of the old Genoa, where in 1800 the

wood-burning ovens cooked the tasty farinata

of chick-peas, focaccia, vegetable pies, stuffed

anchovies and cod fitters. With our woodburning

ovens we prepare traditional dishes

following traditional recipies. Our Kitchen

offers speical sea food, with olive oil dressing

from the Riviera Ligure and products of the

territory.

T he cuisine in Moneglia

The first courses of Moneglia are close to the Genoese

tradition, the king of which is pesto. This is a sauce made

from pinenuts, basil, olive oil and sour cheese added first,

and later parmizan. It is eaten with homemade pasta, in

particular trofie, a local speciality. Also homemade pansotti

are very good, a sort of large ravioli stuffed with borrage and

wild herbs served with butter or walnut sauce. Smaller ravioli,

stuffed with lean meat or vegetables, linguine and trenette

with sea food sauce, regal servings of spaghetti, compete

with farinata, pancakes of chick-pea flour baked in a wood

oven and served with cold cuts and fresh cheese, or boiled

for at least an hour, eaten cold, called panissa. Of uncertain

origin, cuculli, small round fritters, made with borrage and

herbs, are ideal as an apperitive and to be eaten in company.

The second courses of Moneglia are based on simple dishes,

devided between the richer part from the sea, and the

humbler part from the hills. From blue fish to vegetable pie,

much of which was considered superfluous, or unsuitable

for finer cooking, today stays on the table. The unwanted

parts of fish are fried, a simple cold soup of bread becomes

a caponada; tripe, baccala and stockfish are now popular in

restaurants which serve them on a plate of polenta, or cooked

in sauce with olives and pinenuts. The second courses of

Una delle principali è il Castello (o Fortezza)

di Monleone, sulle prime pendici ad ovest

dell’abitato di Moneglia. La tradizione vuole

che sia stato edificato nel 1173, quando

venne nominato in un editto genovese che

ordinava la costruzione di castelli difensivi, atti

a difendere la Repubblica dagli attacchi dei

rivali Malaspina e dai pirati saraceni. Attaccato

ripetutamente durante gli anni successivi, nel

1397 se ne decretò l’abbandono definitivo

come struttura difensiva.

Quello che oggi si può ammirare dove sorgeva

la fortificazione medievale è il piccolo Castello

De Fornari, costruito a inizio Novecento e

in stile liberty, che oggi ospita un bed and

breakfast. Oltre quest’elegante sistemazione,

si trova un bel parco affacciato sul mare, dove

si possono visitare le vecchie vestigia della

struttura che fu.

Torre Villafranca, eretta sulle pendici di una

collina, domina ancora la città a est, lambita a

destra dal torrente Bisagno e restaurata negli

anni ‘30 del Novecento dal senatore Luigi

Burgo, che allora ne era il proprietario. Durante

la seconda guerra mondiale, la fortezza è

stata purtroppo seriamente danneggiata.

Solo recentemente, dopo che le strutture

sono state finalmente messe in sicurezza e

riaperte al pubblico, che può così godere non

solo delle rovine della struttura pentagonale

del complesso, ma anche dello splendido

panorama del golfo di Moneglia. Sia il mastio,

a pianta quadrata e realizzata in muratura,

che i camminamenti sono visitabili, così come

l’unica garitta di vedetta conservatasi fino ad

oggi; e anzi, la torre, in origine a due piani,

è diventata sede del Centro Studi Felice

Romani.

Tra i luoghi di culto trai più antichi del paese

menzioniamo la Chiesa di Santa Croce , che

sorge nel centro della cittadina, a una breve

passeggiata di distanza dal Comune, databile

al 1030. Un secolo più tardi, nel 1143, la

ritroviamo ampliata e assurta ad essere il

centro di una più ampia comunità religiosa,

o pieve. Purtroppo, della chiesa medievale

non rimane più nulla: le fonti raccontano di un

rovinoso crollo che la coinvolse, avvenuto nei

primi anni del XVIII secolo. La pieve come la

conosciamo noi venne quindi riedificata nel

1726 in stile barocco, e abbellita da opere

di Anton Maria Maragliano e da una preziosa

Ultima Cena della scuola di Luca Cambiaso,

che nacque proprio a Moneglia. Ultimo lascito

delle epoche che furono, e che videro Santa

Croce nascere e svilupparsi, è l’Oratorio dei

Disciplinanti, che nonostante le modifiche

in epoca rinascimentale, è ancora visitabile

nell’atrio e nell’aula. Le pareti di quest’ultima

offrono un’altra attrattiva al visitatore, con

i loro affreschi risalenti a varie epoche,

come recenti studi hanno dimostrato, e che

riempiono le pareti di cicli completi sulla vita

della Madonna cui il complesso è dedicato e

della Passione di Gesù Cristo. Altra chicca

su Santa Croce sono i trofei conquistati

nella battaglia della Meloria, combattuta

come abbiamo visto tra Genova e Pisa e

conclusasi a favore della prima. Appesi a

una lapide nella facciata della Chiesa, si

possono ancora vedere due degli anelli della

catena che chiudeva il porto di Pisa, trafugati

e appesi per ricordo. Ultima ma non meno

importante, la Chiesa di San Giorgio. Vicina

alla fortezza di Monleone, fu edificata nel

1396 da frati benedettini, che ne eressero

la struttura in stile gotico. Per quanto sia

stata restaurata agli inizi del XVIII secolo,

assumendo un aspetto barocco sia nella

facciata che nelle tre navate interne, la torre

campanaria, a pianta quadrata, presenta

ancora strutture che rimandano al suo stile

originario, come la decorazione a marmi

bicromi e le trifore che ne ornano la sommità.

Diviene parrocchia nel 1414, separandosi

così dalla giurisdizione della vicina Santa

Croce, e fu ampliata da un chiostro costruito

nel 1484, da monaci francescani che dieci

anni più tardi acquisirono il santuario grazie

a un lascito testamentario. Con lo scorrere

degli anni si arricchisce di numerose opere

d’arte di pregio, trai quali le più importanti

sono un gruppo ligneo che raffigura il santo

cui il tempio è dedicato, Giorgio, mentre

sconfigge il Drago, o “L’Adorazione dei

Magi” del pittore locale Luca Cambiaso.

La tela più importante conservata, tuttavia,

è senz’ombra di dubbio il “San Giorgio

che uccide il drago”, che adorna la volta

superiore del presbiterio ed è attribuito, a

ragione o meno, a Peter Paul Rubens.

Placide e beate le passeggiate che farete

a Moneglia, nel suo sistema di caruggi

medievali che taglia in due il centro, parallelo

alla riva e stretto tra i muri coloratissimi

delle case, quasi tutte evolute in altezza e

con facciate rinascimentali. Il Caruggio di

via Vittorio Emanuele sarà l’incontro di vita

notturna e shopping di Moneglia, sempre

che non si intenda farne mambassa perché

in quel caso c’è Sestri Levante ad attendervi.

Villafranca Tower - Башня Виллафранка

One of the most important is the Castle(or fortress) of Monleone, on

the lower hills, west of Moneglia. It was said to have been built in 1173,

when it was named in a Genoese edict that ordered the construction of

various castles for the defense of the Republic against attacks of the rival

Malaspina and the Saracen pirates. It was repeatedly attacked in the

following years, and in 1397 it was ordered to be abandoned. On the spot

where the mediaeval fortress lay, today one can admire the small castle

De Fornari, built at the beginning of the 20th century in the liberty style,

and is a functional bed and breakfast hotel. There is also a beautiful

park overlooking the sea, where one can see traces of the original castle.

Villfranca tower, built on the slopes of a hill overlooks the town from the

east. On the right it is coasted by the Bisagno stream and was restored

in the 30s by Luigi Burgo, who was the owner. During the second world

war, however the fortress was seriously damaged. Only recently, after the

building had been made safe, it has been opened to the public, which can

enjoy, not only the ruins of the pentagonal complex, but also the splendid

view of the gulf of Moneglia. Both the keep, with a square plan, and the

battlements can be visited, as can the only watch tower surviving . The

main tower, originally with two floors, is now head office of Study Center

Felice Romani.

The Church of Sante Croce is one of the oldest buildings in the town, rising

in its center, a short walk from the town hall. It dates from 1030. A century

later in 1143 we find it enlarged and established as a large religious

place of worship, or a parish. However, nothing remains of the mediaeval

church. It was said to have mysteriously collapsed in the early years of the

18th century. The parish church as we now know it was built in 1726 in

the baroque style, and decorated with works of Anton Maria Maragliano,

and by a precious Last Supper from the school of Luca Cambiaso, who was

born in Moneglia. The last remains of that epoc which saw Santa Croce as

it was, is the Oratorio dei Disciplinante, which, although changed during

the Renaissance, can still be visited. The walls of the hall offer another

attraction to the visitor. The frescoes date from different times according

to recent studies, and cover the walls with complete cycles of the life of the

Madonna to whom the complex is dedicated, and of the Passion of Christ.

Another thing to see in Santa Croce is the remaining trophies conquered

in the battle of Meloria, fought between Genoa and Pisa, and won by the

former. Hanging from a stone on the façade of the church, one can still see

two of the links of the chain that closed the gates of Pisa, carried off and

hung up as a souvenir.

And last but not least important, the church of San

Giorgio built in 1396 near the fortress of Monleone by the

Benedictine monks, who chose the Gothic style. It was

heavily restored at the beginning of the 18th century, to

the baroque style, transforming both the façade and the

three naves inside. The bell tower on a square plan, retains

features of its original style, such as the two coloured

marble decoration and the trifore that decorate the top. It

became a parish church in 1414 and thus separating itself

from the jurisdiction of Santa Croce, and was enlarged

by a cloister built in 1484 by Franciscian monks who ten

years later bought the sanctuary thanks to an endowment.

As the years passed it was enriched by numerous valuable

works of art, among which the most important are a group

of wooden carvings that represent Saint George, to whom

the church is dedicated, while he fights the dragon, or the

Adoration of the Magi, by the local painter Luca Cambasio.

The most important canvas, however is, without doubt,

“Saint George killing the Dragon” that hangs in the

upper volt of the presbytery and is attributed to Peter Paul

Rubens.

Peaceful and blessed are the walks you will have at

Moneglia, in its mesh of mediaeval streets which cut the

center in two, parallel to the shore and narrow between

the highly coloured walls of the houses, most of which

are very high with renaissance facades. The street of Via

Vittorio Emanuele combines as a nightly meeting place

and a shopping street, but if you want to live it up, it’s best

to go to Sestri Levante.

В Монелье вас ждут безмятежные прогулки по

средневековым переулкам между разноцветными домами с

фасадами эпохи возрождения, которые делят центр города

пополам. На улице имени Виктора Эммануэля проходит

вся ночная жизнь города и здесь же располагаются лучшие

магазины.

Le principali manifestazioni culturali di Moneglia,

rinomate sia in tutti i comuni limitrofi, che a livello

provinciale e regionale , sono i concerti di musica

classica organizzati dall’Associazione dedicata a

Felice Romani, poeta e letterato, apprezzato librettista,

prediletto da Vincenzo Bellini e Gaetano Donizetti;

l’Associazione ha contribuito, inoltre, al recupero,

ristrutturazione e valorizzazione di gran parte degli

spazi culturali sul territorio comunale, sfruttati poi per

queste ed altre iniziative.

Non possono ovviamente mancare nel centro come

nelle frazioni le celebrazioni del patrono, l’Esaltazione

della Santa Croce, durante la quale, con gran

affluenza di popolazione devota, si susseguono

le processioni che vogliono i cristezanti, con i

meravigliosi e pesantissimi “Cristi Liguri”, attraversare

strade impervie e sentieri tortuosi.

Da non perdere assolutamente è il Palio Marinaro

di fine agosto cui partecipano numerosi equipaggi

delle diverse località del Golfo del Tigullio, nella gara

interregionale di gozzi in vetroresina a sedile fisso.

Il lunedì di Pasqua, il Comune e la Pro loco, in

collaborazione con il Consorzio Olivicoltori Du Facciù,

organizzano la Mostra Mercato dell’Olio d’Oliva.

Ogni anno a febbraio, in più, si celebra il Carnevale

della Zucca, storica festa che rinnova il ricordo della

tradizione popolare che si propone di spiegare il

perché Moneglia venga definita, dai borghi limitrofi,

il paese della zucca, con sfilata di carri allegorici

obbligatoria. Il tutto si basa su di una disputa sorta in

tempi lontani tra due contadini locali che, proprio sul

confine dei loro poderi, avevano trovato germogliata e

cresciuta una pianta di zucca.

Accomodation, Tourism and Events

The association Felice Romani is named

after a poet and literary figure, “libretto”

writer and favourite of Vincenzo Bellini and

Gaetano Donizetti. It organizes the principal

cultural events of Moneglia which are the

concerts of classical music, well known

nearby and also on a regional and provincial

level. The association has contributed to the

restoration and valuation of the principal

cultural locations of the district, for its own

and other initiatives. A central place must be

given to the Festivity of Santa Croce, during

which the people follow the procession of

the marvelous and very heavy “Cristi Liguri”

through the winding streets and paths.

Don’t miss the Palio Marinaro at the end of

August when numerous teams of the Gulf

of Tigullio participate in the rowing race

with traditional boats called “gozzi” made

of fiberglass with seats. On Easter Monday,

the City Hall in collaboration with the olive

producers Du Facciù hold the market show

of Olive Oil.

Every year in February, as well, there is the

carneval of the pumpkin, a historic festival

which keeps alive the memory of the popular

legend which claims to explain why Moneglia

is defined as the capital of the pumpkin or

squash. There is a procession of allegorical

floats. The story goes that in times past there

was an argument between two local farmers

who, on the border of their land, found a

growing squash plant.

масла. В феврале проходит ежегодный Карнавал

тыквы с обязательным парадом декоративных

платформ, это старинный праздник, который

напоминает о традиции, благодаря которой

Монелья была прозвана жителями соседних

городов тыквенной землей. Все началось в

древние времена с возникшего спора между двумя

крестьянами, которые нашли на границе своих

наделов ростки тыквы.

I dintorni

Un breve tragitto in treno, e magicamente si arriva

da un capo all’altro di paesaggi diversi tra loro come

il giorno e la notte, ma a pensarci, racchiusi in poco

meno di un centinaio di chilometri in linea retta. Non

solo Moneglia funge da spartiacque tra i territori

scoscesi delle Cinque Terre e le belle baie del Silenzio

e delle Favole di Sestri, Santa Margherita e Portofino

con la sua movida e le passeggiate a ponente, ma

vale la pena ricordare il numero di svariate frazioni

e piccoli centri che mantengono l’aspetto rustico,

quasi medievaleggiante, della Liguria interna, luoghi

oltremodo mistici che intervallano i break sulla

spiaggia; risalendo la valle del torrente Bisagno

vengono incontro al viaggiatore San Saturnino

e Bracco, lungo la via Aurelia, tuffandosi in un

paesaggio naturale ricco di boschi. In un vallata

fluviale si apre Deiva Marina verso est, in direzione di

La Spezia, col suo paese vecchio e l’area più recente

affacciata sul mare, a nord protetta dal comune di

Castiglione Chiavarese, a sud dritta in bocca al

sorriso delle colline soleggiate di Framura, Carro e

Carrodano, che attraverso Levanto si ricollegano al

Golfo dei Poeti.

Un appuntamento da non mancare è il “Bagnun” di

acciughe che è uno dei sapori più tradizionali di Riva

Trigoso primo Borgo che si incontra a Ponente dopo

le gallerie. L’acciuga, pesce povero per eccellenza,

incontra il pomodoro e la galletta del marinaio, in una

ricetta che regala tutto il gusto del Mediterraneo.

Il Bagnun, dal 1960, è anche qualcosa di più.

Da un’idea di Edoardo Bo, si cominciò allora

ad organizzare una serata, tradizionalmente nel

penultimo fine settimana di luglio, durante la quale

offrire ai cittadini e agli ospiti generose porzioni della

celebre zuppa di pesce, passare un fine settimana

fra musica e spettacoli e far scoprire i segreti del

nostro territorio. Da qualche anno il Bagnun è anche

un’associazione culturale onlus, che porta il nome di

Sestri Levante in giro per il mondo.

Nella limitrofa Sestri Levante, infine una curiosità: al

parco Mandela tutti i venerdì da marzo a settembre

con orario 21-23 (ingresso libero) è possibile

osservare le stelle, la Luna e i pianeti con il telescopio

dell’Associazione Culturale Il Sestante e assistere

a video proiezioni. Il punto di osservazione è

raggiungibile, anche da persone portatrici di handicap

motori, poichè non vi sono barriere architettoniche.

The Surroundings

Take a short train journey and magically you arrive in a landscape totally different from that where you set off,

but very near , being only 100 km. away as the crow flies. Moneglia lies between the rocky coast of the Cinque

Terre, and the Bay of Silence and the Favole of Sestri, Santa Margherita and Portofino with its walks to the

west; but we must remember the inland places of Liguria, with its numerous towns and villages of rustic and

sometimes mediaeval aspect, mystical places to be visited when you want a change from the beach. Climbing the

valley of the Bisagno stream, the traveller comes across San Saturnino and Bracco, on the Aurelia, a landscape

of woods. A river valley opens, in the direction of La Spezia, towards Deiva Marina to the east, with its old town

and the newer area facing the sea, protected to the north by the district of Castilione Chiavarese, and to the

south are the sunny hills of Framura, Carro and Carrodano, linking with Levanto and from there going on to

the Gulf of the Poets.

An event not to miss is the “Bagnum” of anchovies, one of the most traditional events not to be missed, at Riva

Trigosa, the first coastal town to the west after the tunnel. The fish of the poor, the anchovy is cooked with

tomato and ship’s biscuits in a tasty Mediterranean recipe.

The “Bagnum” since 1960 is even more. Originating from an idea of Eduardo Bo, an evening event was organized,

traditionally on the second last weekend in July, when generous portions of fish soup are offered to citizens and

guests, and the weekend is spent with music and shows and discovering the secrets of the territory. For a few

years the Bagnum has also been an Onlus Cultural Association, that spreads the name of Sestri Levante around

the world.

Lastly, a curiosity in nearby Sestri Levante. At Mandela Park, every Friday, from March to September, from

21.00 to 23.00, free entrance, it is possible to observe the stars, moon and the planets, using the telescope of

the cultural association The Sestante, and also watch related video projections. The observation point is also

enova, affacciata sul golfo omonimo, cantata dai

poeti e messa in versi dai cantori, si alza grigia di

nebbia la mattina. Non è il migliore dei risvegli, ma

è il freddo dell’ultimo inverno che lo esige.

L’aria di mare che permea i piccoli villaggi arroccati

sulla costa, qui in Liguria, è per lo più la stessa, ma prima che gli

ultimi stralci siano sciolti come zucchero a velo, sugli scogli rivolti

ad est, il capoluogo che si stropiccia gli occhi viene posseduto

dallo spirito dei borghi che lo costellano. Genova viene quindi

filtrata da un non ben specificato prisma naturale che i pescatori,

sui gozzi che beccheggiano poco distanti da dove il sole dipana

tutto quel grigiore, potranno descrivervi molto bene.

Ognuno dei paesi del genovese respira una sua, propria, autentica

aria di mare, ciascuna diversa e legata a doppio filo al suo

rustico, al suo agglomerato di case, riuscendo come per incanto

a discostarsi dal freddo pungente dei cantieri della Lanterna, che

omaggia secoli di storia. E’ un cambiamento impercettibile, solo

chi conosce bene la sua città sa avvertirlo.

Succede, perciò, che in un punto l’aria diventa sottile e, assieme

a quel forte timbro di iodio che si fa in quattro per entrarti

nel naso, si aggiunga quasi inaspettata una fragranza di muschio

scesa adagio dalla montagna, o in un’altra arrivi planandoti nei

pensieri quella vellutata della crema solare col fattore di protezione

cinquanta. Talune hanno il buon odore della farina di grano

spessa per cuocere la focaccia; le più rare, hanno anche l’ambra

dei pini, quelli contorti che guardano alle profondità dei flutti,

nella traccia che si lascia dietro il Tirreno, con l’articolo che bisogna

immaginarselo maiuscolo.

Ecco, se avete capito che Genova abbraccia una serie di universi

ciascuno distinto, nell’insieme eterogeneo di mare, boschi e colline,

dalla sua periferia verso il territorio della Riviera di Levante ha

un che di nostalgico, che ricorda la Provenza: lo iodio si mischia

all’aroma dei glicini, della lavanda, dei ristorantini che aprono alle

undici e ti propongono il miglior pesce della costa, caro, sicuramente,

ma diamine se ne è valsa la pena. La nota floreale, quella

acre del limone che scioglie i succhi delle orate nei grossi forni

industriali, la polvere del pietrisco che il vento sospinge avanti e

indietro sulle scale delle facciate di chiese bianche come miraggi,

ecco è lei che si avverte quando l’uscita dall’autostrada ti ricorda

che stai transitando sull’Aurelia.

Da Genova andando verso oriente, ma anche da La Spezia verso

occidente, il confine che segna rispettivamente la fine della linea

immaginaria che vi porta alla Baia delle Favole con Sestri e Riva

Trigoso e da quella all’area dello Spezzino passando da Deiva,

si avvale di una nota olfattiva aggiuntiva che a dirla tutta non è

nemmeno così sgradevole: quella della benzina.

A Moneglia, perché è qui che si ferma il nostro viaggio dei sensi,

ci arrivi e ne esci scomparendo nella montagna, coperto dal timbro

amaro che è gasolio e GPL. Infatti, ad orari alterni, ci sono

dei semafori che ti dicono quando e come farlo, come proseguire

il viaggio. Un minuto prima guardi a ridosso della battigia, con

la carreggiata che sfiora gli scogli, quello dopo ti cacci nell’antro

della strega a fari accesi.

Benvenuto alla litoranea delle gallerie viaggiatore, un breve percorso

fatto al buio che ti esclude dal sole accecante e dalle prime

vestigia dell’antica roccaforte propria dei Lapicini.

Racchiusa nell’abbraccio di due promontori, Punta Moneglia e

Punta Rospo, la baia che la riflette si riscopre generosa di macchia

mediterranea.

E’ all’uscita delle gallerie che l’odore pungente della benzina si

stempera in un salmastro tutto nuovo, e mentre il verso stridulo

dei gabbiani ci accompagna in un minuscolo ma molto curato

villaggio di pescatori, i robusti ulivi che si piegano pochi metri

più a monte promettono di raccontarvi una storia ancora diversa.

Legittimo, sulle prime, pensare di avere sbagliato strada. Di solito

è Sestri che si cerca sulla cartina, o Santa Margherita dove ci

sono i locali e i residence esclusivi, non si transita in quei paesini

dispersi dove non prende il wi-fi.

Eppure Moneglia non è una frazione, non è nemmeno dispersa,

è proprio lì, che ti guarda curiosa mentre si sdraia placida tra le

spiagge e il colore azzurro e cristallino dei suoi tratti costieri, il

mare che sventola a tutta la comunità europea la sua Bandiera

Blu. Strade pulite, che di abbandonato o monotono hanno poco,

lastricate fino ad arrivare al carrugio medievale che taglia in due

il centro, richiamo a mamma Genova, parallelo alla costa e stretto

fra finestre sgangherate e portali rinascimentali, dove i paesani

offrono sorrisi, abbronzati e secchi come uccelli di mare senza

più le piume, le dita lunghe e il becco del naso che guarda con

ostinazione al cielo per vedere se minaccia pioggia, ben sapendo

che non ce ne sarà, e che il giallo delle mimose sarà lo stesso del

sole che picchia forte a mezzogiorno.

Ci sono filari di palme, danno a Moneglia quel tocco esotico che

non guasta, sul lungomare, ti offrono lo sfondo ideale per le fotografie

in macro. L’impronta degli ulivi tra gli anfratti di arenaria,

imperterriti a spiare negli scorci che si alternano tra i tetti delle

case, è quella che poi scoprirai rendere famosa Moneglia per il

suo olio buono, dal sapore intenso , celebrato ogni anno dopo

la Pasqua.

Qualche turista arriva a Moneglia la prima volta e lo vedi aggirarsi

borbottando, con il suo bravo pranzo al sacco, le infradito e

gli occhialoni prêt-à-porter. Non sa cosa fare, perché le cose da

fare, in realtà, sono tante. E’ spiazzato. Le signorine per bene che

vengono ad abbronzarsi da Milano, Bologna o Asti, soggiornano

qui da anni, consigliano allo straniero di andare all’Orto dei Preti,

tra il paese e Riva Trigoso, o alla Madonnetta, e lui ingenuo non

sa che ci lascerà il cuore, in quel tratto di mare cristallino che si

mangia via le callette rocciose. In via Vittorio Emanuele si ammirano

i monumenti principali della cittadina, la chiesa di San

Giorgio, l’Oratorio dei Disciplinanti, la chiesa di Santa Croce con

il meraviglioso mosaico nel sagrato, e lui ancora si aggira sperduto,

sorpreso di fronte al fatto che in un solo borgo di mare ci

sia così tanta attività, così tanta vita. Borbotta ancora qualcosa a

proposito del navigatore, della svolta mancata. Alza gli occhi alla

collina che sovrasta il paese e gli dicono che lassù c’è la Fortezza

di Villafranca, che protegge il Tigullio e la scia di villaggi e piccolissime

frazioni da quasi un millennio.

Eppure di pirati neanche l’ombra. E il turista neofita già smette di

borbottare per cercare di calarsi nello spirito della borgata marinara,

nei suoi fantasmi settecenteschi, negli itinerari che arrivano

fin quasi le Cinque Terre. Chi invece la frequenta già da qualche

anno, Moneglia, lo vedi che parla a bassa voce con l’amica, i

bimbi o la compagna, solo che vanno tutti in punta di piedi, e ti

chiedi perché.

I bar, ciascuno una piccola oasi di cortesia, ti invitano a sederti

per un buon aperitivo di giorno come la sera, ti parlano della loro

città e ti dicono che dal 2011 Moneglia è entrata a far parte dei

Borghi più Belli d’Italia. Il vino è eccezionale, la cucina ottima,

i palazzi che ti fanno ombra sono raccolti nel cuore del centro

storico e le case hanno tutte quelle meravigliose tinte da abitazioni

gitane misconosciute, magari un po’ sbiadite per colpa del

vento, il maestrale, solito, che ti toglie il sale dalla pelle, quando

finalmente ti decidi a pagare il conto e muovere fino ai loro usci

o verso le spiagge, a ridosso del paese queste ultime. Una linea

di sabbia esigua prima della costa rocciosa che le gallerie hanno

anticipato. Il rumore del bagnasciuga e quello delle cicale a orchestrare

il primo pomeriggio.

Nella giornata tipo che un luogo come Moneglia offre, tre sono

le cose che potrebbero ricorrere: il sole, le passeggiate a piedi o

a cavallo, la pace dei sensi. Qui tutto è sospeso in una piccola bolla

che odora di fiori e salsedine, con quel retrogusto della benzina che

ti ricorda, ma davvero lievissimo, che c’è un mondo fuori dalla calma

placida della baia racchiusa nei promontori, della Riviera di Levante

che si guarda bene dal soffocare questa perla delicata, che per la sua

conformazione geografica sembra poter scomparire nella montagna.

Se sali i sentieri tortuosi tra i pini e le leccete arrivi a Lemeglio, a 200

mt d’altezza, in alternativa c’è da visitare la Pieve dell’antica podesteria

che fu la frazione di San Lorenzo. Risalendo la valle del torrente

Bisagno arrivi a San Saturnino, che in estate ti regala radure ombrose

e d’inverno castagne da arrostire, conta solo cento abitanti.

C’è quindi questo saliscendi di vegetazioni spinose e contorte, sulle

colline ripide che portano a terrazze coltivate e campanili solitari,

dove la terra regala buoni frutti, si frigge la borragine e si cercano i pinoli

per il pesto, dove le chiese hanno quelle tipiche facciate a bande

bianche e nere, come bandiere di fede, e il rosone centrale a prometterti

una fettina di paradiso. Dove le persone come uccelli che cercano

il pesce si librano, al di sopra di ciò che la più torrida delle giornate ha

da offrire, apprezzando l’umiltà di un pasto semplice e di una stretta

di mano, di quel dialetto che a parlarlo ricorda una filastrocca.

Monegliesi che hanno cura degli anziani, dei loro fiori e della straordinaria

pace che permea le case. Ecco cosa trova il turista appena arrivato,

uscendo dalla litoranea delle gallerie che toccano Deiva Marina

e Sestri. Ecco cosa troverete.

E alla fine capisci anche perché, perché quelli che sono arrivati qui

prima di te vanno in punta di piedi. L’aria è tiepida in ogni stagione

dell’anno, sembra di godersi una rigenerativa vacanza in Provenza,

ma sei a due passi dalle grandi località dell’ecatombe che è il traffico

sulla Tangenziale Ovest; le ricciole che saltano a pelo d’acqua, in cerca

delle acciughe del mare aperto, sembrano lance d’argento, le scogliere

che si mangiano il tramonto, la sera, hanno qualcosa di fiabesco,

un accenno di magia tra il corbezzolo e gli alberi stregati della riviera.

Non può essere che un sogno. Entriamo a Moneglia da svegli, rimaniamo

sì, ma in silenzio.
