Nuova luce sulle stelle / Stars - New Lights
lui girato subito prima di raggiungere una celebrità istantanea con The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
– DAVID ROBINSON
Recent rediscoveries, restorations, and reconstructions permit us to see new aspects of four major stars of silent days. Two of the most ill-fated young
women in the Hollywood story, Mary Miles Minter and Olive Thomas, are seen at the zenith of their charm, glamour, vitality, and optimism, at the ages,
respectively, of 14 and 19. An unfamiliar Rudolph Valentino, as a dark-dyed, moustachioed scoundrel and seducer, appears in Stolen Moments, the film he
made immediately before winning overnight stardom in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The full-fledged divo is seen in a clever assembly of remaining
evidence of the long-lost The Young Rajah, a film which now looks a good deal livelier than legend has generally credited it. Completing this tribute to mark
the 80th anniversary of Valentino’s death is Edoardo Ballerini’s brilliant miniature portrait in Good Night Valentino.
Lon Chaney and his Thousand Faces are seen at three points of their evolution. A precious fragment from Poor Jake’s Demise shows Chaney at the very
beginning of his film career, already distinctive in a secondary role as a dashing dude. In Broadway Love, directed by Ida May Park (1879-1954), who made
14 films between 1917 and 1920, generally featuring strong female protagonists, he is outstanding as the rustic lover of a young beauty seduced by the big
city. Finally we see him at the peak of his career, as a slow-witted Russian peasant in Benjamin Christensen’s drama set in the Russian Revolution, Mockery.
Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
Stolen Moments,“Una storia d’amore sudamericana”, fu l’ultimo film di
Valentino prima di The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (I quattro
“Rudolf Valentino”, come
125
– DAVID ROBINSON
