A MOVIE TRIP THROUGH FILMLAND (DeFrenes & Co.,US 1921)
Regia/dir., anim: Paul Felton; prod: C.R. Bosworth; f./ph: Joseph
DeFrenes; 35mm, 1914 ft., 23’ (22 fps), imbibizione originale ricreata
George Eastman House, Rochester, NY. Restored in 2005 with funding
from the Eastman Kodak Company.
Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
– CAROLINE YEAGER
Kodak Park, the main manufacturing center for film stock and the
Eastman Kodak Company’s headquarters in Rochester, New York, is the
setting for this combined animation and live-action documentary about
the company’s production of motion picture film. The opening animated
sequence makes the point that silent films were able to cross all language
barriers. In 1921, Kodak Park produced 147,000 miles of motion picture
film. Beginning with the arrival of cotton bales, the film documents the
step-by-step process of film production. It required 4,000,000 pounds of
raw cotton, 3 tons of pure silver bullion, and 12,000,000 gallons of water.
The restoration of A Movie Trip Through Filmland was a collaborative
effort between George Eastman House and the Eastman Kodak
Company, supervised by Edward Stratmann with the assistance of Mike
Champlin, Jim Hart, and the technicians at the Kodak laboratory. The
restoration was derived from two original 35mm diacetate prints in the
GEH collection, each with tinting and toning, but with different tinting
schemes and of varying lengths. – CAROLINE YEAGER
conservati solo pochi e sparpagliati frammenti. Il National Film and
sarà presentata a fine anno a Canberra.
Scrivono Andrew
Pike e Ross Cooper in Australian Film 1900-1977 (Oxford University
I Tait
The Story of the Kelly Gang in giro per l’Australia, controllandone la
– PAOLO CHERCHI USAI
Australia celebrates this year the centennial of its iconic early silent film,
possibly the first feature film ever made, and the earliest version of a story
brought to the screen several times over the years (including the 1970 Ned
Kelly by Tony Richardson, with Mick Jagger in the title role). The original
length of the film was 4000 ft.; unfortunately, only a number of scattered
fragments are known to survive. The National Film and Sound Archive is in
the process of completing a digital restoration of the extant material. The
project was blessed by the discovery of another long fragment at the
National Film and Television Archive in London, parts of which will be
included in a new extended version to be premiered by the end of the year
in Canberra.
armour) and Dan Kelly until their violent death in 1880 were the object of
