Nordisk 100 Celebriamo quest’anno il centenario <strong>del</strong>la Nordisk Films Kompagni, tuttora una <strong>del</strong>le principali case di produzione scandinave. Ma gli anni d’oro <strong>del</strong>la Nordisk sono stati quelli <strong>del</strong> muto, quando era guidata dal suo fondatore e direttore, Ole Olsen (1863-1943). Olsen aveva un occhio clinico per le imprese di successo: nel 1904 passò dall’intrattenimento da fiera ai film, acquisendo una sala, il Biograf-Theatret, nel centro di Copenaghen. Ben presto egli decise di realizzare da sé i film da proiettare nel proprio locale. Nel 1905-1906 acquistò l’attrezzatura necessaria e divenne produttore, avviando uno dei più noti studi cinematografici <strong>del</strong>l’era <strong>del</strong> muto. La Nordisk sorse in un terreno preso in affitto a Valby, poco fuori Copenaghen. Il 15 settembre 1906 Olsen riuscì a presentare il primo programma composto interamente di film danesi, tra cui Fiskerliv i Norden (Vita di un pescatore <strong>del</strong> Nord). Olsen era un astuto uomo d’affari, con un fiuto infallibile per quel che voleva il pubblico. Nell’inverno 1906-7 produsse il suo primo grande successo, Isbjørnejagten (Caccia all’orso polare), che vendette, perlopiù sul mercato internazionale, 191 copie. L’estate successiva realizzò Løvejagten (Caccia al leone), un successo anche maggiore, con 259 copie vendute. Il film fu girato sull’isoletta di Elleore, nel fiordo di Roskilde, trasformata in una savana con fronde di palma conficcate qua e là nel terreno. Due leoni furono acquistati dallo zoo Hagenbeck di Amburgo per ben 5000 marchi ciascuno. <strong>Le</strong> riprese <strong>del</strong> film cacciarono Olsen in un sacco di guai, a causa <strong>del</strong>le denuncie <strong>del</strong>la locale società umanitaria presso il Ministro <strong>del</strong>la Giustizia. <strong>Le</strong> autorità bloccarono il film, anche se Olsen provocatoriamente riprese a girare pochi giorni dopo. Un giovane operatore, Axel Graatkjær, passò persino un giorno in galera. Olsen fece esportare di nascosto la pellicola in Svezia – mossa abile da parte sua, perché una successiva azione legale mise al bando il film in Danimarca, ma che gli costò la licenza <strong>del</strong> Biograf-Theatret. Løvejagten uscì in tutto il mondo nel 1907, ma non arrivò in Danimarca fino alla fine <strong>del</strong> 1908, dopo che le accuse di cru<strong>del</strong>tà verso gli animali erano state lasciate cadere. A parte le vicende produttive, Løvejagten è notevole per l’uso abbastanza avanzato <strong>del</strong>la narrazione cinematografica, con primi piani e montaggio incrociato. Nel 1909 la Nordisk girò l’ultimo film sulla caccia grossa, Bjørnejagt i Rusland (Caccia all’orso in Russia), un altro successo che vendette 118 copie. Nel suo primo anno di vita, la Nordisk realizzò non meno di 37 film. Già nel 1910 ne produceva più di 100 l’anno. Il numero di cortometraggi di fiction girati nel periodo 1906-1909 ammontava a 250. Il numero di film non-fiction, nello stesso periodo, arrivò circa a 235. Lo studio era una fabbrica <strong>del</strong>l’intrattenimento che sfornava regolarmente melodrammi ben fatti, storie d’amore osé, commedie slapstick, adattamenti da classici letterari e thriller sensazionalistici. Olsen scoprì anche l’attrattiva di altri temi, che con la loro popolarità si svilupparono in generi ben precisi – film sulla tratta <strong>del</strong>le bianche; drammi ambientati nel mondo <strong>del</strong> circo; drammi sociali in genere; storie orientali, con harem in particolare; occasionali film spettacolari rappresentati, nella selezione <strong>del</strong>le <strong>Giornate</strong>, da Atlantis (1913) e dall’avventura fantascientifica Himmelskibet (La nave <strong>del</strong> cielo, 1918). Gran parte dei primi film <strong>del</strong>la società furono diretti da Viggo Larsen (1880-1857), che spesso ne era anche il protagonista. In seguito, tra la rosa di registi reclutati dalla Nordisk troviamo Eduard Schnedler-Sørensen (1886-1947, in attività dal 1909), August Blom (1869-1947, attivo dal 1910), Robert Dinesen (1874-1972, attivo come attore dal 1910 e come regista dall’anno successivo), Holger-Madsen (1878-1943, attivo come attore dal 1908 e come regista dal 1912) e A.W. Sandberg (1887-1938, in attività dal 1914). Gli anni dal 1911 al 1916 furono i più fecondi per la Nordisk. La società aveva uffici di vendita od agenti in tutti i continenti. <strong>Le</strong> produzioni sfarzose erano all’ordine <strong>del</strong> giorno a Valby, dove venivano tenuti occupati cinque teatri di posa. Più di ogni altra cosa, la Nordisk aveva “stelle <strong>del</strong> cinema” commerciabili. La più grande di tutte, Valdemar Psilander (1884-1917), fu sul libro paga <strong>del</strong>la società dal 1911 al 1916, apparendo in 83 film. Psilander morì agli inizi <strong>del</strong> 1917, a solo 32 anni d’età, e la sua scomparsa servì ad aumentare la popolarità dei suoi film. “I film di Psilander” si vendevano come il pane in tutto il mondo. Il suo maggior successo sul piano artistico fu Klovnen ([Il clown] 1917) diretto da A.W. Sandberg e uscito due mesi dopo la sua morte. Il successore di Psilander sarebbe stato l’attore norvegese Gunnar Tolnæs (1879-1940), che recitò nel ruolo <strong>del</strong> maragià in una serie di tre film nota in inglese con il titolo di Oriental Love. Il primo di questi film, Maharadjahens Yndlingshustru (La favorita <strong>del</strong> maragià) fu girato nel 1917, il secondo nel 1919, entrambi con Lilly Jacobsson come co-protagonista. Lo sbalorditivo successo portò ad un terzo film, realizzato da una società tedesca. Nel 1926 la Nordisk realizzò un remake di Maharadjahens Yndlingshustru, ancora con Tolnæs, stavolta affiancato dalla diva danese Karina Bell, che nello stesso anno apparve nel rifacimento, girato da Sandberg, di un altro film di Psilander, Klovnen, con Gösta Ekman e Maurice de Féraudy. Nel periodo 1910-16 la Nordisk realizzò l’incredibile cifra di 736 film di fiction: il culmine fu raggiunto nel 1914, con 143 titoli; nel 1915 ne vennero prodotti 122 e 121 nel 1916. I film d’attualità, nello stesso periodo, furono circa 244. Lo scoppio <strong>del</strong>la prima guerra mondiale rese difficile la distribuzione. Nel 1916 la filiale di New York venne chiusa, e nel 1917 il vasto mercato <strong>del</strong>la Russia andò effettivamente perduto. I grandi guadagni <strong>del</strong>la Nordisk in Germania, dove la società possedeva all’incirca 60 sale cinematografiche, si trasformarono in altrettanto grandi perdite. Comunque, la Nordisk continuò a produrre molte commedie slapstick e un numero minore di lungometraggi con alti costi di produzione e star di grande richiamo. Il regista più importante nella storia <strong>del</strong> cinema danese, Carl Th. Dreyer (1889-1968), esordì come sceneggiatore alla Nordisk nel 1913. Nel 1919 diresse il suo primo film, Præsidenten (Il presidente), che fu seguito da Blade af Satans Bog (Pagine <strong>del</strong> libro di Satana). Il suo talento non fu però sufficiente a salvare uno studio in declino.
