NEWS EDITORIAL Richard Barnes Editor-In-Chief TV Tech War Heats Up Did anyone ever think the TV tech war might abate one day? In any case that’s not about to happen now. At IFA 2016, we’ve seen the true arrival of OLED as a mainstream TV technology. Indeed, with a number of key TV manufacturers launching OLED TVs for the first time at IFA, this year marks a major turning point in the display industry. The ability to manufacture reliable, high quality large screen OLED TVs is still a great challenge. The past years have seen a couple of key manufacturers dabbling in the market, but this year, for the first time, OLED TV is almost everywhere. Quantum dot technology is making leaps and bounds as well, and an increasing number of companies are leveraging what is in fact quite similar in many ways to OLED as a way of offering amazing contrast and colour. Then comes the exceptional ULED (ultra LED) technology as well as HDR UHD – even now in 8K configuration, with at least one manufacturer. The fact that so many different types of technology are battling side by side has two effects. Firstly, it pushes quality as high as it can possibly go at any one time, but on the other, it can be confusing for the buyers. It will be up to well educated and savvy retail sales people to convey the right message. Another thing is sure. It’s all an amazing feast for the eyes! IHS Predicts Rapid Expansion for Smart Home Devices The Smart Home market is projected by market analysts IHS to broaden at a compound annual growth rate of 60%, reaching 477 million devices in 2020. 47 million connected smart home devices were shipped globally in 2015. The American region accounted for 62% of global shipments in 2015; however, Asia-Pacific will gain significant share over the next four years, coming into parity with the American market in 2020. The EMEA region will remain flat, holding steady at 20% of the global market for smart devices. This rapid growth will be primarily attributed to appliances and air conditioners, according to recent World market for connected home devices (excluding energy & controls) Unit Shipments, 2015-202 analysis from the IHS Markit Smart Home Intelligence Service. “The smart home is organized into the following five primary categories: safety and security, climate control, consumer electronics, energy and water control, and lighting and controls,” said Blake Kozak, principal analyst, IHS Markit. “The challenge is delivering all five categories on a single platform where the devices will communicate in an effective mesh network, rather than act as isolated and autonomous processes.
