News Mobile Devices Take Centre Stage for Intel Intel used its press conference on Thursday to announce the launch of a new high-end smartphone, produced in partnership with Chinese telecoms manufacturer ZTE. The Intel Atom Z2460 chip with 1GB of RAM features a 4.3-inch QHD screen with 960 x 540 pixel resolution and 4GB of memory. This is expandable to 32GB via microSD, which will result in HSPA+ speeds of up to 21Mbps. The ZTE flagship handset is the latest product from the ZTE Grand series and will be launched in Europe in September. Intel also announced “the largest Ultrabook showcase in the world” featuring 60 current Ultrabook models from manufacturers such as Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Toshiba, all based on third generation Intel Core processors. These include convertible Ultrabooks with a rotatable display that can be used as a tablet with touchscreen control for enjoying multimedia, or as a classic notebook with keyboard. Intel first introduced the Ultrabook category last year. These devices are characterised by a combination of secure computing and a thin, light, and elegant design. Mobile devices are taking centre stage at the Intel booth. Intel believes that mobile internet and the Cloud both offer huge opportunities and growth prospects for the entire industry. Up until 2015, Intel is expecting around 15 billion intelligent devices, which are all interconnected, exchanging data, and accessing the internet at all times. Hall 17 Stand 124 Lenovo Aims for Top Spot with Ideatabs As Chinese PC maker Lenovo announced its most successful year ever, along with its goal to become market leader, it also committed to the future by unveiling a range of hybrid slates and tablets from its Ideatab series. Lenovo has already diversified to become a leading smartphone maker in China. President of Lenovo EMEA, Gianfranco Lanci, told an IFA press conference that a new ecosystem of “PC+” tablets, smartphones and hybrid PCs would increasingly augment its core PC business in Europe. Accordingly, Lanci announced some radical innovations, including the IdeaTab S2110, a 10-inch hybrid Android 4.0 ‘premium entertainment tablet’ with an optional detachable keyboard dock. The Ideatab S2110 is 8.69mm thick and weighs just over half a kilo, making it one of the thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablets on the market. In addition to the roll-out of more conventional Ideatab A2107 (7-inch) and A2109 (10-inch) quad-core tablets housed in rugged metalalloy roll cages, Lenovo also launched the lightest 14-inch notebook on the market — the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, weighing in at only 1.36 kilos.
