NEWS ULTRA HD IS AN ULTRA- HIGHLIGHT IFA TecWatch is home to 70 startups and 100 organisations Tomorrow’s World Today TecWatch showcases industry innovations According to a recent survey, 15% of people believed they already owned a UHD TV, but they were not quite sure. These were among the insights shared by Stephan Heimbecher, Director of Innovations and Standards – Technology at Sky Germany and Member of the Board at the German TV Platform, during a podium discussion at the TecWatch Forum at IFA Berlin 2016. Take a trip to IFA TecWatch in Hall 11.1 and it will feel like you’ve been transported into the future. From smart homes to virtual reality, digital health to future mobility, the event is a fascinating glimpse at tomorrow’s technology. IFA TecWatch is home to 70 startups and 100 organisations, showcasing products with the potential to transform the consumer and home-electronics markets. For the huge number of visitors browsing around the TecWatch Hall, the experience throws up a wide array of amazing innovations ranging from 3D Printing and digital smartphone payments to solar tech and robots that can wash windows. From the excitement of VR headsets and drones to lifesaving developments in medical care, TecWatch addresses every aspect of life in contemporary society. There is even an appcontrolled personal brewery that enables users to make beer. Cutting-edge technologies include the Botspot scanner, an arrangement of 80 highspeed lenses arranged around the walls of a compact photo booth to simultaneously take a picture of an object to be recorded in 3D. In VR, Tecwatch introduces 360º cameras that can be thrown up in the air like a ball to take a snapshot of their surroundings. Other attractions include industry association ZVEH’s e-home and an electronic component that is screwed into a socket like a bulb and can be used as a lamp or video projector to show YouTube clips or Netflix videos. Young entrepreneurs have an important place at IFA TecWatch. Working with IFA, the German Startups Association has put together a unique programme of exhibits, lectures, pitching competitions and presentations. TecWatch also encourages girls to take an interest in technical professions. A joint initiative led by three industry associations, the VDE, ZVEH and ZVEI, will provide concrete insights and information at Girls’ Day on 6 September One in four respondents intended to buy a UHD TV receiver, while half of these said this would be for the improved picture quality. While classic HDTV only shows 35% of visible colors, BT.2020-standard UDHTV devices are already capable of depicting 76%. The range of programs on offer is also everexpanding. More than 60 releases are currently available on UHD Blu-ray. According to Hanno Basse, CTO of the Fox Entertainment Group, this number can be expected to increase to a good 100 by the end of the year. Then there is also a constantly growing range of online offerings and the continual increase in UHD satellite channels, as confirmed by Markus Fritz from satellite operator Eutelsat. Where 32-inch devices were once the standard, this has now increased to 40-inch and 42-inch with the market introduction of flat-screen televisions. Today sizes between 50-inch and 65-inch are seen as standard. 6
