SPOTLIGHT ON CHINA USA Region HEAD MONSTER – NOEL LEE Ideas Are Bigger and Sometimes Even Better Many things are bigger in America and some things are better. America, once the proud home to the greatest audio manufacturing companies, shifted their manufacturing and production overseas years ago. Despite some small efforts (such as Google when it owned Motorola), there is no sign that Asia might lose its largest customer. What America does hold close to home are the brand names (Apple, Google, Amazon, Best Buy, Netflix and others) of the big companies and the big ideas from both big and small companies that create tsunamis of product trends that wash across the rest of the world. Mobility, Wearables, Internet of Everything, Connected Car, Streaming, these are the giant conceptual contributions to our industry worthy of a giant country. “America is still a think tank in terms of content and usability,” agrees Paul Semenza, President, NPD Technology Analyst Business. Mobile is a good example of that and this explains why IFA has announced a cooperation with America’s CompTIA Super Mobility Week this year. Commenting on IFA’s newlyformed link, Semenza says, “What used to be distinct segments – CE and Telecom – now that you are running the same apps on TVs and smartphones, are inevitably coming into conflict or cooperation with each other, and I think the industries need to recognise that.” Wearables is another category where the world watches American developments. “Wearables is still a wide-open game,” observes Semenza. “Every day some new products show up. I think we will go through a lot of design iterations before the industry figures out what the key sets of functionality are.” And where better to try, try again than the land of opportunity. When we asked the legendary founder of Monster, Noel Lee, what American companies should be doing to be more global today, he replied, “They should come to IFA for one thing. It’s not so smart not being here. They should engage with press and make their presence known, especially for a small company that doesn’t have a big budget, who can’t run the Samsung style ads, or even the Beats ads before they sold to Apple.” Former IFA keynoter Lee was visiting the show to meet top partners this week, just after the announcement by Apple that the company was buying Beats – which he formed with Dr Dre – for US.2 bn. The newly designed glass dome offers a great view of the city. You need to register for entry in advance. Berlin celebrates the 25th anniversary of the falling of the Berlin Wall this year. How important is it for people to experience and relive this dark period? Keeping memories alive and celebrating this 25th anniversary is important to make sure that this period will not happen again as well as to honour the hundreds of wall victims who lost their lives in the battle for freedom and free speech.
