BUYERS' GUIDE NOMADIC LIFESTYLE IN-EAR HEADPHONES MARKET Within the growing market for Headphones and Mobile Stereo Headsets in Europe 6*, sales of In Ear models are further gaining weight and achieved a value share of 46%. The sales value of the segment reached a level of more than 280 million EUR from January to June 2016, which means that consumers have spent 8% more money on In Ear devices in January to June 2016 compared to the previous year period. The main growth driver for the In Ear market is the segment of Bluetooth In Ear models, which could grow by 34% compared to 2015. Also devices which are especially designed for wearing whilst doing sports are further giving positive impacts on the In Ear market: More and more models and brands are available in the Sports In Ear segment, reaching a sales value share of 21% within the European In Ear market from January to June 2016. STATE OF PLAY The high growth of in-ear headphone sales of recent years is of course very much linked to the proliferation of smartphones. Technological advancements have resulted in products that are lightweight and powerful. A huge amount of research and development is going into creating key differentiators, and an increasing number of higher end products are arriving on the market. Seen by many as a fashion accessory, in-ear headphones are a core product segment in the audio sphere, and this year at IFA, the choice is incredible! INNOVATIONS TO LOOK FOR AT IFA WIRELESS The main players are all releasing Bluetooth wireless versions of their “buds”, giving users more flexibility – with the usual excellent sound. Look for loss-free Qualcomm aptX codec, which ensures the transmission quality is as good as possible. It is best to test the units and look for sound drops or other issues, rather than simply relying on a spec sheet. INNOVATING @ IFA DRIVERS The quality of the drivers dictates the frequency response. Driver size varies from 8 to 15 mm, but it’s the technology, rather than the size, that dictates the sound quality. Balanced armature drivers are small, but powerful, and can be used in groups of two, four, six or more for better frequency response. Planar magnetic drivers are compact and create exceptional sound. Hybrid drivers are also emerging, as a combination of balanced armature and dynamic drivers. They are not cheap, but have excellent sound quality. DESIGN The visual and ergonomic aspects of in-ear headphones are very strong differentiators. For sports use, “ear hugging” designs prevent the earphones from falling off during training, and this in itself can be a stylish fashion accessory. Most Bluetooth units have a linking chord, which can be flat, or in the case of at least one manufacturer, in comfortable nylon outer. Most manufacturers are working hard on developing “sexy” marketing material leveraging the look and feel of their headphones.
