Trade Talk Dieter Mathys Managing Director, expert international GmbH THE CRITICAL EYE – AND COMMENTS OF THE MEDIA AT IFA Each day in IFA International, we will be bringing you feedback from media at the show, helping buyers and manufacturers get a better understanding of how they work at IFA. Take it From an Expert The huge retail group is back at IFA to hone its competitive edge With over 7000 stores in more than 20 countries and retail sales topping 20 bn Euros at last count, expert international GmbH is a key player in the industry. We asked the group’s managing director Dieter Mathys, how business has been evolving over the past year. Fotios Fotiadis Editor-in-Chief of Sound Vision magazine IFA – THE UNAVOIDABLE SHOW One of Europe’s top AV journalists explains why he comes to IFA Very well. We are growing double digits due to expansion into new countries and a very good Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) and Small domestic Appliance (SDA) market.“ What have been the “sweet spots”? The MDA and SDA market, smartphones, and an increase in turnover via Internet. How is your organisation’s channel philosophy changing with time? Sales via Internet are nicely growing. What’s new since last year? We have integrated 3 new countries into our family: Switzerland, Poland and South Africa. How are you catering for the growing complexity of products in the market when it comes to staff training and information. Training and information for our specialised dealers have for decades always been a normal part of our business, even one of the most important ways to differentiate to our competitors. We invest more time and more money in training and information than before and We have integrated 3 new countries into our family: Switzerland, Poland and South Africa. parts of this job are done more and more by/via online-training. Why is IFA so important for you? IFA is THE TCG-fair (Technical Consumer Goods) in Europe and Expert International is of course in Berlin for the whole show. How do you use IFA International – the official show daily, and what are your comments on daily? It’s a very well made magazine, which helps us to keep an overview of the most important innovations, trends and lectures. Hailing from Athens, Greece, Fotios Fotiadis has been attending IFA since 1985. He is editor-in-chief of Sound Vision magazine as well as running a few websites covering consumer electronics by reviewing and testing products and presented technologies at large. He is also a member of the most important press association in Europe, the well-known EISA. We asked Fotios what for him is the most important trend to follow this year at IFA. This year we are looking forward for HDR (high dynamic range) televisions, for UHD Blu-ray players and streaming audio video services. Also, a major trend is the highres audio, which moves the audio market to a next level. What are your key reasons for coming to IFA? Being a European journalist, IFA is the key global show in Europe, what an opportunity. I started visiting IFA in 1985 and I have never missed a year. It’s the kick-start time for the holiday season about electronics and we spot there the new products that we are going to review for the websites and the magazines in the coming months. What do you appreciate most about the show? IFA has a unique atmosphere which is enhanced by the beautiful city of Berlin. I like to get lost in its booths and corridors, checking products, contacting people and following all the presentations and keynote speeches. Do you follow any of the conference sessions? Never miss them. Not only do I receive fresh information there, but also I see familiar faces of the press and the industry. Conferences are like an energy bar for all the press. What tips or advice would you give to international journalists visiting for the first time? I suggest to them expect to have a pair of comfortable shoes, fully charged cameras and two extra days to discover Berlin. What a wonderful city. IFA International • Wednesday 9 th September 2015 9
