Gérard Lefebvre This has allowed me to make a short list of the most pleasant destinations in terms of creating a blend of “professional efficiency and personal pleasure”, and Berlin no doubt arrives at the head of the list. Whether vendors, trade professionals, analysts and the press, we are all, by essence, short on time, working and travelling a great deal, sometimes to the detriment of our private lives. When we participate in a show like IFA, which is held in a city as attractive as Berlin, and in addition at such a pleasant time of the year, it would be a sin not to take advantage of this. This city offers a pallet of potential pleasures for practically all age groups, all characters (from party animals to the more quiet), and all situations of private life. Singles will have no problem in finding ways to amuse themselves in the evening, while spouses with partners at the IFA all day can take in the sights of this city, filled with history, culture and romance, meeting in the evening in one of Berlin’s wonderful night spots. Why not add a few days to one’s stay to take full advantage of the city? For those tempted by the idea, I have transformed myself, for just this moment, into a “special advisor” for your trip to Berlin! I suggest you firstly discover Berlin by the Spree. The boats leave from Charlottenburg, allowing you to get a unique view of the city from its waterways, all the way to Jannowitzbrücke. When you alight, take the time to visit Alexanderplatz, one of the highlights of Berlin. As your appetite stirs, take a taxi to the KaDeWe, a department store whose likes are rarely seen in Europe, and whose eighth floor houses a number of restaurants offering wonderful dishes and wines at very affordable prices. Once satiated, you must take the time to scour the seven remaining floors of the KaDeWe, a magnificent world of brands bringing you the best of beauty, fashion and lifestyle. Following this, your feet should still be able to carry you as far as the Zoologischer Garten, where you will discover, with surprise, a number of very rare animals. The park is magnificent, and, still on foot, from here you are able to reach Budapester Strasse. One of Europe’s top hotels, the InterContinental, can be found here, and whether you arrive in time for afternoon tea or an aperitif, you should not miss the legendary “Marlene Bar”. Where to dine? The choice is vast. If you don’t feel like going any further, why not take advantage of “Hugos” at the InterContinental (touting one Michelin star)? If you would like to go somewhere more “fun”, head for the famous Kurfürstendamm, and when you reach George-Grosz-Platz take Schlüterstrasse in the direction of Savignyplatz. There are numerous great “finds” here and if you happen upon the “NU”, there is a good chance you will come face to face with the team from IFA International, who regularly frequent this “fusion” bar/ restaurant after their late night deadline. Perhaps we will see you there! The impressive selection of wine comprises 650 superior wines from the Old World and the New World, from frizzy Riesling to full-bodied Bordeaux wines. The wines will be complemented by a weekly changing three-course menu provided by head chef Sebastian Völz who breathes new life into classic dishes including Entrecôte Café de Paris, Sole Colbert, Fillet of Beef Rossini and Lobster Thermidor with truffles au gratin. Deserts include Crème Catalan, Crèpes Suzette with vanilla ice cream and Rice Pudding Trautmannsdorf. The price for the menu is €56 and each bottle is sold at half price.
