Where to go in berlin

Where to go in berlin “It’s not just a hotel… we sell feeling” Ellington: A hotel… a meeting place…with a jazz theme based on the glorious past of its walls One of Berlin’s most original and tasteful hotels and nightspots is the very “jazzy” Ellington. We asked the establishment’s director Tina Brack what to her mind makes the Ellington different to other hotels in this category. Our hotel is a listed historic structure. It was built as an office building at the end of the 20’s and the building alone shows the glamour of the past. It’s not just a hotel… we sell feeling and atmosphere as well. In the 50’s we had a very famous jazz club in the house, where musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington played – which is of course where our name comes from. Food and beverage are becoming more important, and at the Ellington this is particularly the case. Please tell us more. The Duke restaurant is famous not only for hotel guests but also for Berlin residents. Our chef, Florian Glauert, is well known in Berlin for his “classic French cuisine with a modern touch”. Last year we scored 14 points in the Gault et Milau – and hope to get more this year! What about business meetings? We have light, open spaces that are very inviting for private meetings in a very stylish and relaxed atmosphere. For more “secretive” meetings, there’s our wine safe. It’s a real 30M 2 safe that was used in former times by the state financial authorities. When Berlin was reunified, the Tina Brack Ellington Hotel Director 70-million DM that was to be distributed among those of the former eastern Berlin as a welcome gift was stored here. We now store wines in the safe and are able to host intimate or secret dinners there – with no risk of being interrupted! The history of this hotel oozes from every brick. Please tell us more. The building was famous for the “Femina Hall” – a 2,000 M 2 ballroom with a sliding roof – where up to 2,000 people could dance under the stars. It was destroyed in the war, and we have rebuilt a conference room there. On the ground floor in the 1970’s and 80’s, the Jungle Club was very famous, and very regular guests included David Bowie, who lived just around the corner. Barbara Streisand was another. As I mentioned, jazz clubs here have been famous here over the years, and this history can truly be felt when you visit the hotel. The breakfast room here is very interesting as well… Yes. It was designed by a team of architects from Berlin and Italy. They decided to include long tables with benches. At first, the idea seemed strange, but it really works. People like it, because they get to talk to other guests and the breakfast buffet is excellent. It’s very convivial. For more information, see 48
