Conference & Event Preview EISA Awards Go to a Broad Range of Manufacturers The annual EISA Awards have been announced with prizes going to a very broad range of manufacturers. The EISA Awards are chosen annually by the five different EISA Panels representing more than 50 prominent Photo, Video, Audio, Home Theatre and Mobile Electronics magazines from 19 European countries. EISA stands for the European Imaging and Sound Association, but it could also stand for Excellence, Innovation, Style and Achievement: the attributes that EISA has been awarding for the past 25 years. According to association president Jorge Gonçalves, "For manufacturers, the winning of an award is a badge of honour, a true recognition of their achievement. For consumers, it is a highly trusted guide to the products that stand out from the rest. It is also a catalyst for change, by inspiring manufacturers to develop ever-improving products and new technologies that are a real benefit to consumers." The official award ceremony will take place at the Adlon Hotel in Berlin on 2nd September. Following is a selection of some of the top awards. ShowStoppers’ success measured by 25% year-on-year growth ShowStoppers @ IFA is the place to meet the future. This year, 30 companies will be demonstrating their cutting-edge hardware, software, home appliances, mobile devices and services, alongside all manner of innovative tools for the home and the workplace. The invitation-only media event, which takes place on 1 st September at 6 pm in Hall 15.2, will be attended by 600-plus journalists, broadcasters and industry analysts. T h e f o u r t h a n n u a l ShowStoppers @ IFA continues to grow in both size and stature, expanding by some 25% year on year. However, this dynamic event started in 2008 in much more modest circumstances. “When we were planning the inaugural ShowStoppers @ IFA, we deliberately chose to keep it small because we wanted to test the concept,” says co-organiser Steve Leon. “Of course, we believed that it could and would grow, but we started the event in the US and we were aware that there are differences in the business culture in Europe. But now we know how to do things the European way, many of the companies who questioned why they should invest in appearing at ShowStoppers or even IFA understand our value proposition. And this is one of the main reasons for the event’s robust growth.” ShowStoppers attracts both large and small companies - but one thing that any company of any size can count on is quality time with members of the media. “IFA runs its two press days over the weekend, and the same people who go to those presentations also come to ShowStoppers,” coorganiser Dave Leon explains. “The main difference is that ShowStoppers is informal and very hands-on. Journalists are able to try out the products on show and they have ample opportunity to chat with the exhibitors. The companies taking part are also well aware that they are face to face with a crowd of people who are hungry for news and who love innovation.” One of the most talked-about exhibitors at ShowStoppers 2010 was Samsung, which chose the event to launch its now hugely successful Galaxy 7 Tablet. “We usually don’t know what companies “(…)one thing that ShowStoppers does very well is to offer small companies the chance to be seen in a way that they most probably would not in the main trade fair.” are going to be showcasing, so we had no idea that Samsung was premiering a device that would go on to be such a huge success,” Dave Leon says. “In terms of the larger companies present, HP also had a great show, as did Altec Lansing. Among the smaller companies, earphone and earplug-maker Etymotic Research did very well - and so did Innergie with its MCube universal charger, which works for mobile phones, tablets, laptops and netbooks, as well as camcorders.” This year’s ShowStoppers promises to feature more large companies than last year with, at press time, two of the US’ biggest manufacturers already signed up. “When we talk about anchor tenants, we are most often referring to the larger companies,” Steve Leon says. “But one thing that ShowStoppers does very well is to offer small companies the chance to be seen in a way that they most probably would not in the main trade fair. This year, that includes a company that makes gloves for people who use touch screens, which are available ShowStoppers 2010: they came, they saw, they covered it in the international media both with fingertips exposed and with a conductive membrane. There will also be a company that makes cell phones for senior citizens. These feature a large screen and keypad, alongside an emergency button.” He adds: “Our goal is to have something for everyone, and to be showcasing the most interesting and exciting new products on the market.” Thursday 1 st Sept. 6:00 pm Hall 15.2 www.ifa-international.org IFA International • Monday 29 th August 2011 19
