The much awaited IFA keynote by Microsoft’s OEM corporate VP Nick Parker not only hammered home key selling points of Windows 10, but above all was the global launching point for a number of new devices, set to hit the market for the holiday season. Even though human beings discovered fire, and with that developed the candle, the world was still dark “until 1879 when a new kind of light was invented”. With Edison’s light bulb, “suddenly there were more hours in the day”. With electric light came moving pictures and photography, but still we wanted more. The cathode ray tube revolutionised communication when its mass production gave us television; LED brought another revolution, leading to “an age where display now plays a crucial role in our lives”, through TV, smartphones, tablets and PCs. Han was building up to the coming of screens powered by Organic Light Emitting Diodes, or OLED – accompanied always by extraordinary images projected onto a giant OLED wall behind him. “With OLED,” he proclaimed, “we will experience new ways of living. We will see the future.” Han paused to introduce “the father of OLED”, Dr Ching W Tang of the University of Hong Kong. Delving into the science – which dates back 35 years – he then listed its advantages: there is no backlight; it delivers perfect contrast; and it has high electronic mobility, which means a fast response time. And importantly, it has benefits for the environment. Filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott joined the presentation via the vast OLED screen. Black on television was not good until OLED, he said. “Some of my films are set in space and I saw one of them recently on an OLED screen and space looked as it should look. I think OLED is a game-changer. It’s perfect for home viewing.” Another on-stage guest, Professor Peter Zee, founder and CEO of Red Dot, listed more of the benefits of OLED: TV screens can be bent to suit the room; smart-watches that are typically rectangular can be round; mobile phones can bend which will make them much nicer to hold. “When we talk about a ‘mobile first, cloud first world’, we don’t just talk about the mobility of the device,” said Parker. “We talk about the mobility of the experience. That’s the mobility of the things that matter to you most, wherever you are – and the ability to get access to those in a secure, reliable and incredibly rich way.” Industry analysts estimate that 509m new PCs and tablets will be sold in the next year. 75m devices were already running Windows 10 in its first month on the market and 90,000 unique device models upgraded to Windows 10. 192 countries are already running the new system. An in-depth demonstration of Windows 10 capabilities by marketing manager Bryan Roper wowed the media attendees. In particular, Windows Hello – powered by Intel’s RealSense 3D camera – was an attention-getter, as Roper’s face was recognised by a PC, but also by a website, replacing the need for a password. Nick Parker introduced a number of new devices during the keynote. Educational PCs included the Acer Inspire One Cloudbook – set to sell for US9 and the Lenovo Ideapad 100s-14 – with a price tag of US9. Business notebooks include the Dell Latitude 11-5000 2-in-1, the HP EliteBook Folio 1020 and the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 260/460 with a fingerprint sensor for Windows 10. All-in-One PCs are picking up importance and Parker announced the new Dell Inspiron 24 7000 series including Windows Hello, and the Asus Zen AiO-S including 6 speakers, 4 microphones and UHD screen – selling for under US,000. Finally, the brand new Toshiba Radius 12 and a still-to-be-named Toshiba 2-in-1 were demonstrated as the crowning moment of the OEM boss’s demos.
