BUYERS' GUIDE KITCHEN LIFESTYLE COFFEE CAPSULE MACHINES MARKET The market for Single Serve Coffee Machines has seen an ongoing decline in terms of value in the recent past only paused by 2015 which was a special year as it had 53 instead of 52 selling weeks. The value decrease is driven by intense promotion activities offering not only vouchers for pads or capsules but also cash back and direct price discounts. In the first half of 2017 market shows that this trend is not stopped yet but seems to slow down. In the first half of 2017, the volume development has turned back to positive, amongst others benefited by the fact that there is a growing demand in those countries that have been shown a more reluctant relationship to Single Serve Coffee Machines in the past. STATE OF PLAY Hot beverage machines have grown sales by twothirds in the last five years and coffee pod machines are at the heart of this growth. Consumers’ love affair with good coffee stems from enjoying their coffee shop experiences and now they want to create coffee shop quality at home. The taste for premium coffee at home has resulted in an explosion of different types of coffee machines and plenty of tempting appliances to encourage the coffee aficionado to trade up. INNOVATIONS TO LOOK FOR AT IFA SIMPLY DOES IT Capsule coffee machines are popular because they offer the quickest, most fuss-free route to a homemade espresso. But the machine you choose determines what coffee you can use, and prices can vary substantially, so it’s worth doing your research before buying. Coffee fanatics might argue that using a capsule machine is cheating your way to a cup of coffee, but there’s no denying their appeal if you’re short on time or patience. Instead of faffing around with loose coffee, you simply pop a pre-packaged coffee capsule or pod into the machine, press a button, and around 30 seconds later your espresso is ready. THE SMART CHOICE Smart technology will increasingly become important in the market. While connected machines are in their infancy, Bluetooth-enabled machines have a number of innovative features. The convenience of scheduled brewing means your favourite Espresso, Ristretto or Lungo is ready to drink at a specified time, but for people that use the machines regularly, the ability to automatically re-order capsules when supplies are getting low is an attractive feature. From a maintenance perspective, connected machines will be able to notify owners whenever attention is required, for instance when water is low or de-scaling is needed. TAKING THE PRESSURE OFF When buying an espresso maker, remember good bar pressure is essential for making a good “crema” (the foam on your espresso), and is one of the main indicators of a good cup – meaning the steam meets the coffee granules at the correct speed. To avoid a bitter taste, 15–19 bar is the optimum pressure. Nespresso machines force the water at the ideal temperature through the ground coffee using a high-pressure pump. The pressure of up to 19 bars, which is more than most coffee shops use, generates the crema which encapsulates all of the aromas of the Nespresso Grands Crus. INNOVATING @ IFA CONTACT Thilo Heyder Marketing Manager Small Domestic Appliances GfK Retail & Technology THE FUTURE Consumers’ passion for quality coffee is showing no sign of abating; even the economic downturn did not effect sales of capsule coffee machines. We expect sales to be stable over the next 12 months, with more connected machines coming to market from manufacturers. The ability to remotely “order” your drink, whilst allowing the app to monitor your capsule levels, will appeal to more and more customers, however, the market driver will be quality coffee that costs a fraction of what it does out-of-home. LATTISSIMA ONE BY NESPRESSO The Nespresso Lattissima One machine has one single button to prepare your favourite coffee and milk drink. Simply fill the milk container to the correct level for the chosen milk recipe, which eliminates milk wastage. Simply press the button and the machine will froth the fresh milk directly into the cup. » HALL 1.1 / STAND 102 COLORS BY NESCAFÉ DOLCE GUSTO Colors is an automatic compact coffee machine from Nescafé Dolce Gusto, which comes with interchangeable panels, so that users can adapt the machine to suit their style.
