Rebecca Clarke Small

Rebecca Clarke Small Ensemble Prelude, Allegro, and Pastorale B flat clarinet and viola Score 9780193862388 Composed in 1941, this is the first publication of this work. 14 minutes Dumka Violin, viola, piano Score 9780193867482 This work was written around 1940, placing it near the beginning of a series of Clarke's late compositions. It both looks forward to her lean, linear, avowedly modern conceptions and backwards to works which are explicit homages to ancient styles, forms, and composers. A strain from the gypsy-rondo of Brahms's Piano Quartet Op. 25 echoes throughout the opening pages and is heard again in the piece's remarkable conclusion. 11 minutes Two movements for string quartet String quartet Score and parts 9780193867499 Rebecca Clarke worked in the string quartet medium over virtually the whole of her long life, either as a performer, a composer, or a teacher. The two movements published here are Clarke's only known 'pure' music (music that 'means only itself', as she put it) for string quartet. Two Pieces for viola (or violin) and cello Viola (or violin) and cello Score and parts 9780193864771 Clarke's duo is in two contrasted movements, 'Lullaby' and 'Grotesque', and was originally written as a concert piece for the composer to play with the English cellist May Mukle. 5 minutes 12

E. Housman’s secular text ‘Loveliest of trees’ is a reflection of the beauty of nature from the perspective of a young person. The charming setting in 3/4 features gentle and sturdy arpeggios in the left hand of the piano balanced with accessible choral lines, which rock back and forth through modal and nostalgic harmonies. 1.5 minutes Where Go the Boats? SA and piano Vocal score 9780193869943 This wonderful poem by Robert Louis Stevenson explores the tender and inquisitive nature of the youthful mind. As a child casts his own miniature boat along the river, he wonders where it will end up, and where other children’s boats go. The melody rings of a children’s lullaby and the watery accompaniment flows along, just like the river depicted in the poem, which “flows along forever with trees on either hand.” 2.5 minutes Choral Sacred Vocal score 9780193858640 Available from Banks Music Publications Choral Secular Choral Advent & Christmas Christmas in Saint Petersburg SSAATTBB unaccompanied Vocal score 9780193868724 2.5 minutes Night of Dreams SATB Vocal score 9780193856653 Available from Banks Music Publications Valerie Showers Crescenz 13
