Minty Marianne celebrates its 75th anniversary 75 years of elegance Born in 1949, Marianne is famed for its combination of crispy peppermint shell and smooth dark chocolate. This beautiful classic, wrapped in red and white sloping stripes, was the brainchild of the skilled confectioners Aimo Martikainen and Antti Österman. After the years at war, people were hungry for new taste sensations and the combination of peppermint and chocolate tickled their taste buds. The sweet, back then manufactured at Chymos factory in Toijala, became an instant success. Since the beginning, the Marianne foundry moulds have remained the same and the very first name of the sweet, Lyhde, which means sheaf, owns its origin to the shape of the moulds. The beautiful and distinctive shape have remained throughout the decades. The name Marianne origins from the 1950’s. The striped wrapping was considered too modest for the beautiful sweet, and the artist Aimo Vuorinen was asked to add some elegance and glamour to the packaging. The flavours of mint and dark chocolate led the artist to think about France, and he designed a wrapping with the national symbol of France, maiden Marianne. The new packaging was however not received very well, and the sweet soon returned to the familiar red and white stripes. The name, Marianne, stayed. The very first packaging of Marianne had the stripes in place, only not diagonal as they are today. Something old, something new: The traditional wax paper wrapper was kept when the new bag format was introduced. This year, Marianne celebrates its 75th landmark year with a special-edition chocolate tablet.
