cpp EDITORIAL Custom Solutions for Harsh Environments Venue for the oil and gas industry In a few days’ time from 3 to 6 September, the SPE Offshore Europe (OE) Conference & Exhibition will open its doors in Aberdeen, Scotland, to show the most important technologies for the oil and gas industry. This year’s biennial event will take place under the theme “Breakthrough to Excellence – Our license to operate”. Over 36,000 industry experts will have an opportunity to learn all about technologies and products for their problems and discuss solutions to help keep costs low and improve business productivity. As oil prices are still very low, petrochemical plants have to pay particular attention to safety and efficiency. Visitors to the fair will be able to exchange ideas with technology experts from more than 900 exhibitors. There will be thousands of demonstrations and a wide range of E&P companies will illustrate case studies. This year will also see the return of the highly popular and free-to-attend “Decommissioning Zone”. More than 50 specialist presentations will be on the agenda at the accompanying fourday conference. The spectrum covers everything from artificial intelligence, project financing, underwater solutions, process safety management and decommissioning to automation and digitalisation. Our preview of SPE Offshore Europe starts on page 10 with the cover story on Rembe. In this article, Claire Lloyd describes the bursting disc as a central safety element and tries to dispel the myths that it has high leakage rates, often fails and needs to be replaced early. At Rembe’s stand in Aberdeen, experts from the company will look forward to explaining the facts in more detail and convincing you of the opposite. Using innovative high-performance plastics such as Polytetraflon-PTFE, PTFE-Compounds, and Moldflon-PEEK with Norsok approval, ElringKlinger manufactures engineered solutions capable of operating in the harshest of subsea and surface environments.
