In Focus: prime markets

In Focus: prime markets – assessing global real estate A UTUMN 2017 Editor FROM THE C H R I S T I A N S C H W A L B A C H Did it really happen if we didn’t take a photo? We are living in what could be described as the Age of Documentation, where capturing an image of an adventure, an exploit or of an exotic locale – be it on a timer, a stick or thanks to the magnanimity of a passer-by – is just as important as the experience itself. This techsavvy 21st-century aptitude is truly remarkable for our easy fluency with images and our tremendous sophistication in picture-taking: there are teenagers whose Instagram snaps could have adorned gallery walls a couple of generations ago. But this increased emphasis on the twodimensional has also brought with it a worrisome tendency to rely on photos at the expense of experiencing somewhere or something in the flesh, of letting all five of our senses succumb to a situation and allowing that tableau to wash over us. Which is why in this issue of Centurion, we’ve set our sights on indulgences that truly require the body to be involved. Journey with us on page 96 to Miami, one of the world’s most sensuous cities, where a revamped beachside retreat offers yet another reason to dig your toes into the silky sands of Miami Beach, and indulge in Emma Hill’s on-the-pulse analysis of how rose, the most traditional of scents, is making a comeback, inspiring our noses with modern verve while nodding to the flower’s rich history (page 64). Elsewhere in the issue, Lisa Grainger voyages to Africa, where she has spent much of the past year scouring the continent for new experience-led outposts (page 31); we look at the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat through the eyes of curator Eleanor Nairne, who explains that with Basquiat’s works, such as Glenn, 1984 (above), as with so much powerful art, “seeing them [in person] is a very emotional experience” (page 69); and we look to new hideaways in the Côte d’Azur, the American West and elsewhere. Don’t miss our stunning fashion and jewellery shoots – proof that the art of photography is reaching new heights – and settle in for in-depth profiles of Lebanese designers, the multitudinous ways artisans are now using resin and the divine wines of Savoie. We hope, as always, that you enjoy each page of the magazine – and that they, along with the daily updated features on our website, inspire you to go out and experience something for yourself, leaving the vicarious enjoyment to all those who follow you or your companions on social media.
