From the Editor

From the Editor CHRISTIAN SCHWALBACH Nature has always been a replenishing balm for body and soul, but over the past year, the great outdoors has taken on a tinsel gleam more akin to magic. We crave it. We treasure it. We have become champions of the humblest of gardens, and all of us, even the most confirmed urbanites, find ourselves yearning for the salve of wide-open landscapes, if only for a week or two. The space and solitude they afford have become the ultimate luxury. It’s with this spirit of plein-air appreciation that we invite you to dig into the latest edition of Centurion, in which outdoors is not quite the theme, but a pervasive motif – from the profile of Louis Benech, one of the world’s most accomplished landscape designers, to our nature-inspired jewellery shoot and our dispatches from mobile safari camps in Africa and the Turkish Riviera. (A quick reminder: please travel mindfully and safely, and check the latest information and local restrictions.) We take nature’s role in healing most seriously in our first-person review of the newly opened Chenot Palace Weggis in Switzerland. Rather than sending one of our seasoned journalists to the highaltitude wellness retreat, we instead tasked the general manager of another standout resort, Paul Linder of Amanzoe, who has spent decades in the hospitality industry, much of it at wellness-focused properties in Asia. He’s able to give insight not only about the resort’s sybaritic proficiency but also the behind-the-scenes workings that make it possible. I’ll let you read his appraisal to find out whether the Chenot method – and its Alpine setting – held up under Paul’s discerning gaze. I wish you happy reading – and I hope you’re able to find a quiet spot outdoors to do so. • Abstract Black This edition’s cover features a detail from Peinture 181 × 244 cm, 2 mai 2011 by 101-year-old French artist Pierre Soulages, dubbed “the painter of black” for his monochrome canvases like this one. © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2021.
