BLACKBOOK A GLOBAL GUIDE FOR THE DISCERNING TRAVELLER FIRST LOOK A Stroke of Brilliance First there was multi-award-winner Cape Kidnappers, now comes Tara Iti. Course designer Tom Doak explains, exclusively for Centurion, what his latest New Zealand project means to him and to golfers around the globe PHOTO JOANN DOST “Bobby Jones once said he could take everything out of his life except for his experiences at St Andrews and he would still have had a rich and meaningful life. I feel the same about my time in New Zealand. A dozen years ago, we worked on the clifftops at Cape Kidnappers and I fell in love with the drama of the landscape and the down-to-earth people we met. The past three years, I’ve been back to create Tara Iti (taraiti.com), right along a deserted beach on the east coast, 90 minutes north of Auckland. The new course is a true links from A to Z – it’s the only course in New Zealand with fescue fairways and greens, so the ball bounces and rolls and every contour must be factored into the approach shot. You can see the ocean from every hole, and it’s warm enough to go swimming in after you finish your round. Hopefully, the success of the course will provide an impetus for more golfers to see New Zealand for themselves.” As told to Farhad Heydari CONTACT CENTURION SERVICE FOR BOOKINGS CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM 27
