BLACKBOOK THE SMART GUIDE 1 WHERE TO STAY With its striking redand-white exterior and fairytale spires, the Palacio Astoreca (hotelpalacio astoreca.com) on Cerro Alegre is one of Valparaíso’s most iconic monuments. A recent m restoration has turned it into the city’s most indulgent boutique stay. The 23-room Relais & Château hotel is equipped with a sleek spa, and its chequered portico is an ideal spot for a sunset aperitif. Just down the road, the five-storey Casa Higueras (casahigueras.cl), which is set in a former mansion, features spectacular vistas and a retro-chic aesthetic. The nine rooms at the smart, minimalist Zerohotel (zerohotel.com) are fitted with high ceilings and windows, some of which gaze out onto the bay, and its four shaded patios afford some of the best views of the Pacific. Antique decor, wooden floors and a palate of warm tones create a cosy atmosphere at the family-run boutique hotel Acontraluz (hotelacontraluz.cl). Located inside Casa Higueras, Restaurant Montealegre (restaurant montealegre.cl) is helmed by chef Antonio Moreno, who trained in France and serves creative fine dining that blends Chilean flavours with an international perspective. Head to Ápice (restaurantapice.cl), a stylish neo-bistro run by a French and Chilean duo, for fresh local seafood and a well-curated selection of natural wines from Leyda and Casablanca. For more casual fare, start your day with breakfast and a latte at Melbourne (melbournecafe. cl), and then grab a Neapolitan-style pizza at Malandrino (malandrino.cl), or WHERE TO EAT & DRINK 2 enjoy a beer on the breezy rooftop terrace at Fauna (faunahotel.cl). Valparaíso is the birthplace of Chilean craft beer – which was introduced by English and Irish immigrants in 1825 – and some of the best examples can be found at brewpub Altamira (cerveceraaltamira. cl). If cocktails are more your style, have a pisco sour and a shot of nostalgia at Bar Cinzano (barcinzano.cl), which dates back to 1896. A raucous mix of salsa, 1980s and funk is on the playbill at club La Piedra Feliz (lapiedrafeliz. cl), where happy hour stretches until 11pm on most nights. No trip to Chile is complete without pisco, and the best place to explore the national tipple is Bar de Pisco (bardepisco. com), with its selection of artisanal spirits and seasonal cocktails.
