It’s a spirit that pulses through the latest horological reincarnation of the current Roaring Twenties reboot: the pendant watch. At the latest Watches and Wonders, the annual haute couture week for timepieces, Chanel introduced three tantalising pendant watches oozing all the hallmarks of the Jazz Age. Held by a long necklace featuring carved onyx, pearls and diamonds, the onyx disc centred by a half pearl, from which a swinging tassel of onyx beads is suspended, turns to reveal a timepiece set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds. It’s the Mademoiselle Privé Bouton, a limited edition of five numbered pieces. Similar in style but limited to one specimen, Mademoiselle Privé Coromandel portrays the profile of Gabrielle Chanel carved in 18-carat beige gold, while the time is displayed on the back, on a floral motif against an onyx dial. Another unique piece is the Mademoiselle Privé Cage, which features two birds made of pearls, gold and diamonds tenderly facing each other in a gilded diamond-set cage. Lift the cage, and a dial, in yellow gold with diamonds beneath it, shows hours and minutes. Also at Watches and Wonders, Hermès exhibited the latest metamorphosis of its classic Kelly-bag-inspired watch, which was originally launched in 1975.
